I think. regular appointment for Soares Dias (again, a leak from Portuguese federation as it already happened in past), I expected Orsato in Serbia - England and inded it will be him, then Schärer for Slovenia. Good appointment by committee, they didn't assign a very big Elite to this clash, it was not needed (but maybe it will be for future Slovenia's games).
ReplyDeleteKružliak fourth official to Orsato should mean that Guida has a game on Monday or, at maximum, on Tuesday, I think, otherwise easy to predict him as fourth official like it was so far for the other referees from same nation!
I didn’t expect Orsato so early. Back in 2021, Kuipers started as a 4O in MD1 and handled “easier” MD2 + MD3 games. So it’s not the same approach. However, SRB-ENG is a safe choice if they want to give Orsato a smooth run to the final. Agree?
DeleteYes that's the reason for which I expected him in this game, it is the best start of a path for the final, otherwise he would have started differently for sure!
DeleteI too didn't expect Orsato so early and had him for Slovenia v England in MD3.
DeleteManzano & Meler with appointments on 17th June now would be expected.
Dear Chefren, I'm an international journalist and I follow referees around the world since Argentina 1978 WC.
DeleteIf possible, I would like you to be a little bit more specific about "a leak from Portuguese federation as it already happened in past".
Thank you so much and congrats for this blog, the best one about world refereeing.
Artur Dias appointment for today game was revealed before the official announcement by UEFA, it had already happened not so long time ago. In that case, FPF had even published the news on their site before the allowed time, and then they deleted it. It seems people inside this federation can't keep confidential info.
DeleteThank you, Chefren!
DeleteI fully understand your idea.
Artur has been appointed for Denmark-England and, this time, there were no previous public informations.
Dingert working in two consecutive games, i.e. with only 16 hours in between seems avoidable.
ReplyDeleteOf course, no travel efforts, but with the high number of VARs, it should be possible to distribute better.
A bit early to speculate, but assuming Orsato has a good start, where would you predict him in a 2nd game?
ReplyDeleteI thought, the expected path is now MD1 + MD3 + QF + final.
However, Orsato would be a great name in sth like Türkiye-Portugal (MD2) or Netherlands-France (MD2). Not sure that is optimal (fitness) management given his age though. If Rosetti is playing it safely, we might expect Orsato in a not too risky MD3 game, with no top teams involved.
Aligned with Chefren I did expect Orsato in SER-ENG; it's a very good starting match for him and, in my opinion, not so easy because players of such two teams are intense and hard to manage. I would see a path like this: MD1 + 16R + FINAL or MD1+MD3SOFT+16R+FINAL
DeleteFurthermore, the most sonorous games in MD2 is probably Spain vs Italy, which is scheduled one week after the EURO has started. Question is, will it be a 2nd appearance for one of the early appointed referees or a 1st appearance for one referee waiting a bit longer…
ReplyDeleteMy idea is, it will be a referee that has officiated Italian club teams very often. The pool of referees is limited to: Turpin, Letexier, Vincic, Marciniak, Makkelie, Kovacs.
Letexier, you can argue whether they dare to assign him at his very first grand tournament.
Kovacs is questionable as Spain plays with many Barcelona players in the squad.
Turpin also could be questionable after he already had the sonorous opener.
So right now, I predict we will see Vincic, Makkelie or Marciniak there.
Is is possible to see a 2nd appearance (Turpin/Vincic) after their first game went well. There are enough days of rest in between.
Another option is to save one of Marciniak/Makkelie. Which automatically means that for this referee, a potential 2nd appearance should be a late MD3 game (group E-F), to arrange enough rest days in between. I didn’t like the management of Makkelie at the World Cup, with just 2 days of rest between his games.
Moreover, it seems obvious to me that a late MD2 Netherlands-France (Friday) should be assigned to a referee that already made an appearance in MD1. Vincic or Oliver are possible there.
The most sensitive game of MD3 is obviously Croatia vs Italy. This could be a very delicate meeting for the group standings. I wonder who we will see there.
I think that we can learn a lot from the policy used for the CL/EL etc.
ReplyDeleteRef Com has done his home work and so it already has a clear favorite for the final. Or at least three referees. Form of the referee in this tournament is a factor but politics as well.
So one can expect that a referee who is candidate for the final will get low profile matches in the knock-out stages. At least thats what we learned from last years CL.
There is one referee we can already exclude from the candidates for the final based on politics. Since Björn Kuipers had the honour of refereeing the final in 2021 you can exclude Makkelie already. His hightest achievement could be a SF, but maybe even a QF is only an option for him.
Since he is used in the hot and chaotic matches this season my guess would be that he is being assigned to ESPITA. This leaves one hot other game between classic top countries NEDFRA. My feeling is that commitee is going to use a very experienced referee there who isn't a candidate for the final.
Since France is a very big candidate for the final, this leaves the path open for their favorite without a scratch out of this potential hot game. I would assume this game could go to Orsato or Marciniak. The one who doens't get the final is directly a hot candidate for the final for me.
Curious to see how everything will unfold.
Marciniak cannot get FRANED as Poland is in the same group.
DeleteI agree, I tend to see Makkelie on Spa v Ita
DeleteI think both games on MD2 in group D are going to be big games and Taylor on one match with Kovacs or Zwayer on the other match, the one who doesn't officiate that game could easily do the Eng v Den game.
