  1. Any news from Slovenia about Damir Skomina recovery?

    1. According to an article in (serious) regional newspaper, Skomina is now a sports director in one of the clubs in Slovenian 3rd division. There is also a statement in the same article that he won't be refereeing anymore due to his severe knee injury.

    2. He is still recovering. He said on instagram rumors about retiring are not true.

    3. Great, thanks for the correction. I was on holiday almost whole August and couldn't follow all news ...

    4. The only reason I can find is a spot at WC. Otherwise I would retire if I were him.

  2. Anyone knows, why Karasev is appointed with German VARs instead of Russian (Meshkov and Ivanov)?

    1. Karasev was appointed with Fritz for the Super Cup and Dankert in ITA-SUI at the Euros, so I guess they're familiar enough with each other.

  3. Important incidents in Mediterranean derby Nice-Olympique Marseille for Bastien. Dozens of local ultras invading the FoP to assault on OM players after Payet threw a bottle to the stands.

    1. After almost one hour of interruption, the officials and the stadium security (including local police) have decided to resume the game.

To talk about the incidents, Nice fans threw bottles and other objects twice in the game, The first time in 1H where Bastien applied the Ligue 1's protocol saying to communicate a preventive message with the stadium's speaker and warning about a game interruption if there is any other similar incident.
The second time, MAR#10 Payet has been hit by a filled bottle, fell to the ground and was hit again by another bottle - as Quilava said, he threw this bottle back to the stands.
After many events (players like Alvaro Gonzalez looking for confrontation, ultras invading the pitch, a confrontation between both teams staffs, Bastien send the teams back to the locker rooms, as the protocol status that the referee must make the players leave the field at the second throwing.
But considering the incidents that occurred after that, Bastien would have taken that decision anyway.

According to French broadcaster, Marseille's players and staff refuse to resume the game.

To summarize this story: a hell of the mess. So sad to witness such incidents after months of games played behind closed doors.

    3. Marseille's players refused to come back to the pitch.
As the game was stopped when a corner kick has been awarded to Marseille, Bastien put the ball in the corresponding corner circle, with Nice players in position on the pitch, and blows his FT whistle, as the visitors didn't came back.
      Game has ended.

    4. If this is the way French referees think they should deal with a situation like this, I think we should suspend all French referees from refereeing UEFA games, absolutely disgraceful behavior from Nice fans (first of all), but secondly by their players and the officials as well.

    5. Pretty sure it's the delegate who makes the decision....

    6. I read the comment by the Marseille president and apologize for my comment. I assumed that if it was the delegate choice, Bastien would simply report the incident and leave it there, but the clownery of returning to the pitch to “take the corner” made me assume otherwise. I do think UEFA should do something about this though, as this is unacceptable.

    7. The ref wanted to abandon the game, but French Ligue did not agree. What a ridiculous decision, clearly made at the broadcaster rights holder Amazon, who wanted the "entertainment" to continue. More chaos = more subscribers = more money, they don't care about the players safety.

The most fair solution would be the resume the game at a later date from the same min/score, with no spectators and of course a hefty ban for Nice, at least 6-8 games behind closed gates. Payet and the other OM staff members who generated the brawl should also receive a suspension of course. Awarding 3-0 for Nice would be totally injust and create an extremely dangerous precedent.

    8. I understand that there are many interests involved, but this is not a good picture of the referee team

    9. Honestly the stadium should have been emptied and the game continue behind closed doors and that would have been the best option to see out the remaining 15minutes!!! Nice should be made to forfeit this match or play behind closed doors for the rest of all their home matches because this is Abhorrent!!!

      Delete
    10. You can't empty a stadium and continue the match. The security risks for that are astronomical. You want to tell drunk, violent fans that the match is going to finish but only AFTER they leave? Good luck with that.

Fans will only leave once they know the match is terminated or abandoned.

  5. Before the start of 2nd legs, I'd like to use this post to pay tribute to Soham, who tragically passed away in an accident nearly OTD 3 years ago.

    May he rest in peace!

    2. It is already three years since he died? I don't believe it is that much. I remembered him in EURO final and when Kuipers announced his retirement since he was a huge fan of him. May he rest in peace!

    3. Thanks for this very touching post.
We will remember Soham forever, I was shocked when I head the news, couldn't accept what had happened.
Yes, three years ago, a month after the end of WC 2018.

@Euro Soccer Ref Indeed, in fact I learned about his death in your former Twitter account, I remember clearly.

  7. Looking at Turpin in Razgrad. His gestures, body language and even the manner of wearing the long-sleaves uniform remind me John Blankenstein, a former FIFA ref from Netherlands.

  8. VAR intervention in Ludogorets for disallowing a goal scored by Malmoe, very long analysis by VAR and then change of decision, offside.

    1. Very doubtful from what I saw, reminds me of some situations in Premier league from last season.

  9. Correct second yc by Vincic

  10. Second YC and RC by Vincic for reckless use of arm while jumping.
It should be checked carefully whether careless or reckless.
It is reported that first YC was very clear (I didn't watch it).

    1. Correct. Hold shirt for a few seconds

And player get also a caution because of timewasting between the catds

    2. Clear careless. I think that is a pitty decision from a referee that seems nervous

    3. Absolutely correct decisions, no doubt about it.

Both cards clear and mandatory, good concentrated performance so far by Vinčić.

    4. I also think it's the correct decision. I really like Vincic's style. He seems in control.

  12. Very clear second YC by Karasev, didn't watch the first one.

  13. VAR in Ludogorets, penalty for handball, fully open arm. Difficult to see for Turpin.

  14. Correct penalty decision by Karasev, the trust in him by committee with EURO call has produced some excellent results.

  15. Turpin could have delayed final whistle, 5 minutes of added time, but at least 1 e 45 were not played...

    1. Today's was far from phenomenal, very one sided with handling yellow cards and arguing players.

  17. Another very good performance of Slavko Vinčič. Mandatory 2nd YC given without hesitation. He didn't allow players to infuence his decisions and applied a very clear line of foul selection and disciplinary control. Also very good management (anticipation, prevention) in potentially explosive moments. Well done!

  18. I would like to start a discussion about time management here. one of the biggest annoyances in football where arbitration can (and must) play a decisive role. Is this possible with a special page?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I would warmly welcome the introduction of the rule from the recent tournament in the Netherlands: 2x30 minutes of play with a clock being stopped at every break in play. It would stop every anti-football time-stealing tactics.

      Delete
    2. I don't know how exactly they reached it in Poland but here the additional time management is simply the best. Often 6, 7 or even 9 minutes are added at the end. But is it so difficult to strictly add the adequate amount of time for every substitution, VAR check, time wasting and other stuff? Some referees (Germany, Spain) are really unkeen to add more than 3-4 minutes as if it's something bad. I don't understand it.

      Delete
    3. What is the value of the yellow ccard for BEN goalkeeper in minute 90 + 4 ???????

      Delete
    4. Nothing, for sure because Vincic finished the match exactly after the original five minutes. The keeper, and several other players, had to be given an YC way more earlier. Vincic was disciplinary good, but his time management was terrible.

      Delete
    5. Absolutely important and annoying topic.

No consistency at all and then everything depends on referee's state of mind.

scenario 1 (yesterday): 6 minutes at least needed, 5 minutes given, from these 5 minutes ball was in play less than 3 and nothing was added. The game was very turbulent and difficult to manage, so Vinčić did something smart from his perspective, not risking anything that could possibly happen in those last moments.

scenario 2: Usually when a favorite is loosing against an outsider (but not always). Too much time added + additional time without clear limit. In England this is most widely used when the game is very dynamic with only one goal difference.

scenario 3: Usually when favorite is winning (but not always), 2-3 minutes added, nothing added, even sometimes stopping promising attack or not allowing free kick or corner in last moments of added time.
