2021/22 UEFA Pre-Season Preparatory Course for Top Referees

This year the Summer course is held in Vienna with the cooperation of Austrian Football Association from 6 to 8 August 2021.

06 - 08/08/2021

Mostly, all Elite and Category 1  referees have been invited. There are some names missing from Category 1, like Nijhuis, Bebek, Stavrev Aranovskyi and Boiko, but basically all are there.
The very interesting  choice is about the selection made for Category 2, these are the names attending the course:

Mykola Balakin (UKR)
Ricardo De Burgos Bengoechea (ESP)
Willy Delajod (FRA)
Ádám Farkas (HUN)
Peter Kjærsgaard (DEN)
Georgi Kruashvili (GEO)
Erik Lambrechts (BEL)
Rade Obrenović (SVN)
Harm Osmers (GER)
Anastasiois Papapetrou (GRE)
João Pedro Silva Pinheiro (POR)
Duje Strukan (CRO)
Lionel Tschudi (SUI)

Women will attend this course as well,  all from Elite and Category 1 have been called to attend the course with a few exceptions.

The course has started on Friday 6 August and it will end today, Sunday 8 August 2021.
Referees have been called to physical and technical tests, with lessons by committee members about hot topics for the incoming season.

  1. So we can expect a special focus on these Category 2 referees for the next group stage.
Regarding Category 1 the missing names are indeed: Nijhuis (BED), Bebek (CRO), Stavrev (MKD), Aranovskyi (UKR) and Boiko (UKR).
This choice seems to be made mostly for age, with these referees being already 44 years old or more. Strukan can be considered the replacement for Bebek, while there is a new attempt for Ukraine with Balakin.
Also strange that English referees are not reported at all in the list of participants, from all Category, but I think this is rather a mistake, I wouldn't expect Taylor and Oliver not attending the course.
So let me say don't take these information as 100% accurate, some other names can be there, but basically this should be enough to understand the choices by committe.

  3. Good performances for Visser (no surprise) and Lambrechts (surprise). When will Belgium have a successor for Frank De Bleeckere in the Elite Group, as also asked by Renaat Lievens Lochristi, a new member of Law 5

    2. I noted that the Referee Observer Vencel Toth acted as Referee in Hungary and is a namesake of the Assistant Referee. My apologies.

  7. Expected choice of 2nd category referees (maybe some other could be included, but these names are ok).

I expect Strukan in cat 1 soon. I has been obvious for a while that he is treated almost like cat 1 referee, with good appointments last season and interesting so far this season.

Germans are going to have a problem if Zwayer and Stieler dont improve their form and are not demoted, but Brych and Aytekin will leave soon so some spots will be there for Osmers, Dankert etc.

    1. OK, but if Zwayer and Stieler stabilize, they can have 3 referees (together with Siebert), who can be in Elite for several years - and compete for places at big tournaments.
And then Osmers and Stegemann could be the German First Group referees.

BTW, remarkable, that Osmers has overtaken Stegemann on UEFA level (U21 EURO and now the course) in spite of coming on the FIFA list one year later. This is not the case domestically, where Stegemann gets the better appointments.

    2. Stegemann had a nightmare under 21 game some months ago, I don't know but maybe that was a test...

    3. Well, Kruashvili was quite bad in his debut at EURO U21 and he got the final in the end.
