The UEFA Referees Committee has announced that Sergei Karasev (Russia) will take charge of the UEFA Super Cup match between Chelsea FC and Villarreal CF, which takes place on Wednesday 11 August at the National Football Stadium at Windsor Park in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Karasev, who is 42, has been an international referee since 2009, and regularly officiates at matches in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and national team competitions. He took charge of three matches at UEFA EURO 2020 this summer, including the round of 16 encounter between Netherlands and Czech Republic, and acted as fourth official at three other matches during the tournament.
At the Super Cup match, Karasev will be assisted by compatriots Igor Demeshko and Maksim Gavrilin, while Alexey Kulbakov (Belarus) will be fourth official. The video assistant referee (VAR) role has been assigned to Marco Fritz (Germany), and he will be accompanied by Pawel Gil (Poland) and Massimiliano Irrati (Italy). Reserve assistant referee Filippo Meli (Italy) completes the line-up.

I remember there was a comment about Karasev when I reported him as candidate for Super Cup and he said he was surprised about this chance, well, now I think he will be surely happy.

Is there any standardisation on the identity and number of AVARs? On the average CL game you get 1 AVAR; at the Euros you got 3, one of whom was an AR. At the Olympics you get 2.
ReplyDeleteSo why only 2 at the Super Cup? And why no AR on AVAR? What do all the extra AVARs do, if their number is that flexible? Is the idea just to referee by committee by having more people in there?
It sort of gives a signal that the Super Cup is not that important a game, compared to the other finals (which is the case, but UEFA likes to pretend it's not).

Is it possible that Meli is the offside VAR and not the reserve assistant referee? I think that this would make more sense because why shouldn't UEFA appoint one of Kulbakov's ARs in the reserve AR role?

It's a logical decision. Yes, a lot of us would have gone with Brych. But consider this: Never before ( at least in the last 10 years, I didn't look any further ) the referee at Supercup had a UCL final previously in CV. Brych has one, in 2017. It is an interesting detail.

ReplyDeleteThis appointment just laughable. Before Euro Karasev didn’t even get one serious KO match in UCL and had some very below par performances in group stage. Shouldn’t even have been in Euro’s of you ask me. Yes, he did well there, but giving him a final after just a couple of good games is just ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteSo how did you feel about Frappart's assignment to this match a few years ago? It's a glorified friendly with a trophy attached to it and it's frequently assigned to referees who are on their way up in the elite category.

The course for advanced UEFA referees is being held this weekend. 101 referees from Elite, 1st and 2nd Category participate. There are also 14 women referees.

DeleteI guess All Elite, All Category 1 and then a selection of Category 2. Also, interesting that there will be 14 women and not the full Elite panel, but maybe this can be because some of them are still in Japan...
