VAR to be used at European Qualifiers as of September 2021

VAR will be operational at all of the remaining European Qualifier matches for the FIFA World Cup 2022.

UEFA can confirm that the video assistant referee (VAR) system will be used, with the agreement of FIFA, in all remaining European Qualifier matches for the FIFA World Cup 2022, following a decision taken by the UEFA Executive Committee in July 2021.

The system will be operational as of matchday 4 and includes all remaining matches taking place from September 2021.

The initial plans to start using VAR in UEFA national team qualification competitions were postponed due to the logistical complications and risks associated with the COVD-19 pandemic.

The VAR implementation, which is being organised by UEFA, will be carried out on site at the stadium of the host association, with the use of specific vans supplied by the UEFA VAR providers.

  1. I praise UEFA and FIFA for this decision, finally they understood that it was impossible to go on in these crucial games without VAR.
Then some remarks: it will be surely more difficult to arrange a VAR room in the stadiums of very small federation, but this is something that must be done. I think at the same time it could be an occasion for such federations to see and learn from this technology.
Second point for discussion: we will have definitely consequences in the appointments because officiating with VAR is not for all referees, so many of them will be out from European qualifiers, even in case of unimportant games.
Solution: UEFA should try to train more and more referees from lower categories and from all the UEFA associations with VAR.

    1. I think that as of now, many European countries have VAR on their leagues so that wouldn't be a real problem.

    5. Thank you! Personally I don't like the countries in which it is used only in some games, as I often said in past, it should be either for all or nobody in the same competition.
Among the missing countries, for sure one must mention Romania, they have a very good development of referees with two Elite, but still NO VAR and that's not good. I'm starting to think that this could be a reason why Hategan didn't get any final so far.

    6. Scottish Premiership is the highest ranked UEFA league without VAR. Norwegian Eliteserien and Swedish Allsvenskan follows.

  4. I don't believe, that they will leave out all the referees without VAR experience, but rather give some of them the chance to work with it for the first time. But we will see...

    1. Clear offside, right in front of keeper, also in contact with him. Could have been reported directly by AR2.

    2. The interesting question is, whether he still is influencing the GK at the moment of the header. Everything before is irrelevant, of course. And that's not so clear IMO.

    3. I was always told that when the players are so close and in contact at the moment of the pass / shot, no matter what attacker is doing, always offside. This must therefore be always punishable, because keeper is blocked by opponent, even though he could have done nothing to make the save.
