  1. The surprise for me is the presence of Michael Oliver, who also had a Europa League match in the first leg.

    1. Maybe they deemed his appointment in Europa more important

    2. Oliver is missing out on UCL play off, so committed is compensating him with Two appointments in the UEL playoffs.

    3. And this is how Hațegan remains with only one Europa League game from the two legs. There were problems at Glasgow? At a quick search one day after the game I didn't find any complaiments.

  2. Huge match for Dias, very close game in what will be a big atmosphere. Could be important for future.

  3. These apppointments were made before 1st Legs so scorelines are coincidental. No one game more important than the other.

  4. Good appointment for Kruzliak. Good to see him back.

No matches at all for Nijhuis...

    1. IMO it was clear that Nijhuis won't get any game in UEFA anymore as he assessed his colleagues in TV what is highly unprofessional and forbidden in UEFA.

    2. I am really curious what the Dutch FA will do. Nijhuis clearly doesn't get much international matches anymore.
However, they also have the spot of Kuipers to fill. Recently, Van Boekel en Blom already stopped or were forced to stop. Van Boekel, after quite a career with some knock-out matches as a referee (round of 32), and of course a CL-final, EL-final and two EURO's as fifth official for Kuipers, didn't even get a goodbye match and was suddenly relegated from the first list to the second list. This EURO again he was treated quite unfair of course, taking a decision he needed to take (no intervention) but still being punished for it.

However, point is that de KNVB has to find new internationals for all these. Kamphuis and Lindhout came in place for Blom and Van Boekel, and especially Kamphuis seems to do well internationally so far, but I have no clue who could be the new international. There are simply no senior referees who could fill in this spots that come open in December. If Nijhuis stops, 2 referees have to be found. But both Manschot and Mulder (the only remaining senior referees) clearly won't be it. The two remaining junior referees (Van de Graaf and Van de Kerkhof) states in interviews they won't be internationals. So the only options are Masterclass referees - who still haven't been promoted. And the options (Dieperink, Kooij, Van der Eijk?) really lack experience, except from Dieperink who has just been really unlucky with a lot of injuries, but who always managed to fight himself back. There's been a golden generation, but there isn't much behind Makkelie now...

I do have to say, a lot of old players in the eredivisie, who also played abroad, stated that the Eredvisie has no complaining about it's referees. I think that is true. There are a lot of quite fine referees, who can be trusted with their matches. But future ELITE referees? At this moment I find it hard to see.

    3. What about Serdar Gözübüyük? I always had the impresion that he doesn't get enought as he deserves because of the strong competition with Makkelie and Kuipers. And at 35 yo he is definetely not old. I say he has big chances to get in Elite soon.

    4. You should not forget that nationally, he's not really performing great. And internationally, each time he has a match there are a lot of comments. He's a good enough referee. Maybe he makes elite, I don't know. But for me, he doesn't have what it takes.

    5. I imagine Dieperink and either Van der Eijk or Nagtegaal.

    1. I am surprised that this has only just been announced. They did this already in the West Ham v Leicester game in the Premier League. And they are pretty conservative there.

    1. Red card ok, but IMO could be avoided if Aytekin had whistled the action just before (OLY player jumped onto SLO player)= safely refereeing.

      Delete
    2. Yes I agree, in my opinion Aytekin is missing in this skill, prevention. Also, in Italy, in case of such a context in a game, RC must be immediately shown. I don't like this very lazy style, in my opinion it doesn't help in giving a solid figure of the referee on the pitch.

    3. @Jacques: Which team should have gotten a FK in the previous action?
Anyway, I don't see the relation between the two actions. Of course, the game would have been stopped, but this isn't a revenge action or anything like that.

At least nationally, Aytekin is very good in the match management aspect, especially in communicating with the players and leading on the field. But as for Gräfe, this doesn't seem to work as well on the international level.

    4. Here, nothing could have been done more to prevent this foul (of course without assessing his general approach in the match). Correct and consequent application of the LotG.

    4. 84' here is the issue with the law. Let's say the foul wasn't made, what would happen? The defender would be straight in front of the ball, so no clear goal scoring oppurtunity. But when the foul is called we are supposed to pretend that he isn't there and the attacker has a free path.

      Delete
    5. Both calls spot on, I think Siebert is in great form!

      Delete
    6. I don't really see a problem of the law here (re. VG@01:38). It's rather a clear DOGSO situation, RC correctly issued by Siebert, as the defender denies a clear goal scoring opportunity.

    7. The 2 RCs absolutely correct, well done!

  16. With regard to the discussion earlier tonight about Gozubuyuk and Nijhuis, here is some more explanation. UEFA does not like referees who are being busy with peripheral matters rather than the focus on refereeing. In the Netherlands, that is not tackled by the weak manager Dick van Egmond. During the EURO, Nijhuis openly criticized the active referees several times. In the same program, his manager, Dick van Egmond, is razed to the ground every week. How can you accept that as a football association? Gozubuyuk criticizes Dick van Egmond's policy in a leading newspaper. But Dick van Egmond appoints him like nothing happened. During his first game he immediately had 2 interventions because he can't read the game and is either too short or too far. Focus on refereeing instead of criticising your manager. That is why he will not be a candidate to become an elite referee for the time being. UEFA has already given that signal with a low profile ECL match. In addition, Gozubuyuk threatens for a long time that a book will be published in which he will show that much injustice has been done to him. The KNVB is afraid that they will come off badly so they try to keep Gozubuyuk happy. The book has been ready for 2 years, Gozubuyuk says everywhere, but still not published. In short, in 2022, 2 young talented referees will be placed on the FIFA list. At the moment there are 4 talented referees (Kooij, Nagtegaal, Dieperink and Van der Eijk), they must show their skills this months. Then, after 2 years, it will have to be checked again who can continue and who needs to be replaced.

  19. Makkelie referee for Albania - Hungary, Kamphuis VAR for San Marino - Poland (main referee not mentioned so likely non-Dutch)

    1. Remarkable fact is that the AVAR for San Marino - Poland is Laurens Gerrets, a second league referee in the Netherlands. He has only whistled 3 matches in the first league...

      Delete
    2. What do you mean exactly with your sentence, Marrkoo? I didn't understand. Do you mean that UEFA assessed this game as potentially very difficult and then they appointed Makkelie for this reason?

  20. 5 September

    Bulgaria - Lithuania
John Beaton - Daniel McFarlane, Alan Mulvanny - Nicolas Walsh
    [Peter Bankes, Neil Davies]
    obs: Tomasz Mikulski (POL)

So UEFA is going to use referees who have no experience with VAR. I guess Beaton didn't handle any game with VAR before this one.

    1. Sorry, observer is Martin Strömbergsson (SWE). Tomasz Mikulski (POL) will observe Serdar Gözübüyük in ITABUL.

      Delete
    2. Martin or Markus? I think Markus is "old" observer, in case Martin Strömbergsson is appointed that would mean he is new observer from Sweden and also that would mean UEFA will start appoint new observers.

I must say that I found it interesting that fof this matches all officials must be FIFA listed but VARs do not have to. I know there are no enough FIFA listed VARs, but it is no consistent with insisting that fourth officials must be FIFA listed.

    3. Bulgarian FA says Martin

    4. UEFA says:
      Delegate: Philippe Prudhon (FRA)
      Referee Observer: Markus Strömbergsson (SWE)
So it should be a mistake in reporting the info by Bulgarian FA.
Indeed even in case Martin should become new UEFA observer (but I would doubt that, based on some events in his international career), new observers are not still appointed by UEFA, they have a meeting and an exam to be passed, I was told this will happen in a day on September.

      Delete
    5. Makkelie has Martens as fourth official. Not FIFA-listed. Gerrets is a very experienced VAR however.

      Delete
    6. So rule that all officilas must be FIFA listed in FIFA qualifiers is abondoned. Probably due the fact that because of VAR there is simply no enough referees. Regardin Beaton's appointment - I don't know if the same principle will be used in Europa League, I expected only referees with VAR experience to be appointed but now I am not sure, I think everybody could get their chance with VAR this season.

      Delete
  21. I think it’s a case of they have to give these referees a chance. There’s so many matches all with VAR that some will need to try. John Beaton is a very good referee in Scotland, much more respected than Collum.
