  1. Turpin immediately in Denmark after the EUROs is an odd choice

  2. Shocking scènes in Feyrnoord - Atletico Madrid. Red card for violent conduct to ATM, by referee Higler.

    2. And after the match ridiculous behavior by Atletico’s manager Diego Simeone, going crazy against the referee team and even pushing Feyenoord’s manager. Truly shameful images I have to say.

      Delete
    3. Look at 0:11. Assistant-referee is pushed away in the middle of the mass confrontation/fight.
Look at 0:30: Feyenoord player was scratched in the neck.
And finally one red card only... Incredible and unacceptable.
If this is Higler's usual disciplinary response to such a massive mass confrontation which is more a fight, we probably now know why Higler was not called up to the UEFA course.

    4. Yes, seems as if more than one RC needed in that sequence. BUT in these games without VAR, can be tough to see all actions taken by the players.

      Delete
    5. Using the lack of VAR to justify just one Red Card being given is a sorry excuse. They had 4 sets of eyes looking at all that nonsense.

    1. I hope VAR recommended an OFR?

    2. Ah, it was outside the penalty area and the tackle was reckless so VAR couldn't have intervened. But wow, quite shocking decision.

    3. Wow. That really is a shocking decision. Did not expect that

      Delete
    4. Yes, VAR couldn't intervene (not a 100% clear RC) but what a mistake by Vincic.

  4. That's what? 3 Friendly games that have gone to absolute crap in the last few days. I know there's no such thing as a friendly but some of the behaviour being shown by the players and coaches is absolutely ridiculous!

    1. Please note a fact, fans are returning at stadium. I think there could b a relation, when football was always played behind closed doors for COVID these events were very rare. Now just a few friendlies and everything happened.

  5. Ohhh, our friend Cakir is still there. Is he going to whistle in Quatar WC 2022 as well or will he retire before (or is he not on the list anymore of candidates WC 2022) ? Anybody knows ?

  6. By stats, looks like Zwayer is having challenging and difficult 1st half.
But in reality, things are all good for him.
All 6 bookings that he has shown were ok, 4 reckless fouls, 1 spa and 1 for protests.

All in all, good officiating from Mr. Zwayer.

  7. Stieler with a great performance in a tense and rather difficult game in Prague. Very composed and calm performance. Lots of time wasting by the Hungarian team, but Stieler was ready for that from the beginning. Correct second YC and good overall disciplinary control.

    1. So I would like to understand more about Marrkoo's comments. ;)

      Delete
    2. Just let me give you a suggestion, Marrkoo. It is a very bad thing if you approach toward a referee by saying "always him, with Hungarian teams", it is like you are biased, moreover you think that a referee has something in particular against some teams. Can we accept that? Surely this blog is not the place. You should try to be more objective and less "football fan", to write comments on this blog. I'm sure you will understand, thanks.

    3. It's interesting how different we can see a game.
I think we can't conclude that much from the number of faults. One of the team was attacking, the other one was killing the time. Usually in this case the defensive team receives more cards.
Of course he could whistle 1-2 freekicks more, but that happens nearly in every game and maybe 1 YC he missed for SPA somewhere in the middle of second half for Slavia, but otherwise he kept full control and the players respected him.
In my opinion he prevented actually really well to avoid giving card to the Hungarian goalkeeper. You could see he was always there and urging him without big gestures to do it fast and I think the goalkeeper never went over a line. He had more problem with the players he threw them to the ground from the beginning to waste time.
And last but not least of course there is frustration in such a game. Lots of fans, big stake and the better team is eliminated. It you react on everything, you end up giving 15 cards and there were no mobbing or anything against the referee.
So all in all to me it's still a very good performance in a challenging game, where you could see he was clearly prepared for this type of match! :)

      Delete
    4. Second YC was OK for Civic, but the first? Slavia fans throwed him with things... (not the only occasion - FYI, after the match, hungarian televison couldn't make interviews on the pitch because of the fans). But overall he was okay IMO.

  10. Vinčič and crew have had an interesting handling situation, with the Rangers GK handling outside his area that they evaluated as SPA rather than DOGSO around the 35th minute. If anyone has a clip would be interesting to check why they didn't come to a DOGSO conclusion

    3. What a hot atmosphere in Glasgow. Looks like CL final!
There is a big pressure on Vincic for sure, but this was a mistake by referee, in case of card, he should have booked the Scottish player, more guilty or a reckless challenge, Swedish player without faults. I can find in this incident a comparison with Italy - Belgium at EURO, late card, not sure to issue it before...

      Delete
    4. The Rangers player comes in higher and at a steeper angle. Hes committed more of an offense than the player who was sent off IMO.

    5. From this easy episode you can conclude about the level and qualifications of the referee.

    6. Committee won't be satisfied with this decision. Totally wrong assessment, it looked like a guess.

Second time in a week Vincic had a KMI wrong, after the wrong assessment in his national league.

      Delete
    7. Wow, the decision is totally wrong and Vincic is badly positioned - he looked like "maybe it was a hard foul, the other one can't be injured out of nothing?!". Unacceptable mistake that shouldn't happen.

  16. Before the game I was quite worried about how Benoît Bastien will cope with this challenging and undecided clash in Warsaw but... WOW, he was excellent today! No key match incidents but an 8.5, even 8.6 performance delivered by the Frenchman. I'm glad that he fully recovered from the last season's mistakes and made such a come-back!

Bastien had a clear tactic for this game: to be extremely focused and have everything under control, not to allow any dissent or mobbing, to consistently whistle every single infringement in order to not allow the game to heat up. And he succeeded in a very good manner! What was very important, he didn't change his approach and was very consistent till the final whistle.

Eight yellow cards - two for dissent, two for reckless use of arms, three for SPA and one for reckless challenge. I think two of them (in 76' for reckless challenge after advantage and in 90+4' for reckless use of arm) were quite soft but valuable from the tactical point of view (especially 76').

Several times he perfectly marked his autonomy in making the calls, not allowing any kind of mobbing. That was great to watch.

Well, after (upcoming) departure of many elite referees, UEFA needs new names. I hope that Benoît Bastien will keep up the good form he usually shows in Ligue 1 and which he has showed today and will be a significant addition to the Elite crew.

    Well done, Benoît!

  17. In the LUD-OLY match the penalty was in 61 minutes, But 68 minutes were used. For a PK lost 7 minutes. Very poor management.

Also, Grinfeld added time only 6 minutes for the second half. It is really interesting.

    3. 08:43 Grinfeeld making VAR gesture?
What happened between 62:00 and 67:00 in a so long time before the penalty execution?

      Delete
    4. 03:13 wasn't it an offside by OLY No.4 ?

      Delete
    5. First penalty: Clear, medium-intensity kick against the opponent, who possibly doesn't need to fall due to that.
Second penalty: Deciding that as dangerous play with contact is not wrong, although the ball is clearly played first and the leg is not extremely high. The "sale" of the decision is not good.

In both cases I wonder, whether UEFA likes them or considers them as one of those soft penalties, that they want to get rid of.

      Delete
    6. Grinfeld whistled the 2nd penalty after discussion with AR2. That's why the whistle comes so late. Then he discuss again with his team trying to identify the offender in order to caution him. N24 of Ludogorest is shown the YC and he is sent-off (2nd YC). Then he realizes (or someone from his team informs him) that the player doesn't have another YC and he annules the RC.

This is what happened those 7'. A real mess.

IMO he was clearly not ready for such a match. Rosetti should have appointed a more experienced referee.

      Delete
    7. Very poor management by Grinfeld

      Delete
    8. Not a positive summer for Grinfeeld, Euro has been disappointing with only one game, but maybe with Olympic tournament waiting this was not a big problem, then in Olympic two matches but still a soft penalty. Now a rather poor performance in Ludogorets - Olympiacos, however we must say this was one of the most challenging games of the round.
I think for a while he will be assigned to low profile games in order to recover, I'm really sorry because he had shown very solid performances to achieve the EURO call and the Elite categegory, before that.

      Delete
    9. Already before EURO he totally lost control over Rangers - Slavia Praha in Europa League. So it's a quite long-lasting series of very poor games.

      Delete
    10. Dont like to disagree on this site, but I watched the whole 90 minutes on TV and thought he did well in a very difficult game. The fact he has had many appointments since including the Tokio olympics would indicate the mark at Ibrox was not a poor one

  18. We did get confirmation that concacaf will not be using the VARs during the world cup qualifiers. In all practicality this is not a surprise since the region has not yet developed vars outside of the us, canada, and mexico. And with all three of those Nations playing in the final 8 team group there just doesn't seem to be a way to provide sufficient coverage for these matches. Really you'd almost have to bring in second and third tier officials from South America to make it work.

  21. Finally! Sorry for the delay but this moment can't be find in the highlists of the game so it took take to find the full game on Internet. But, here it is. Take a look at this. The main phase starts one minute later in the video but the first decision by Cakir it's also interesting. The big question for me is the second one. It is something that you not see every day. I don`t say it is a correct decision or a wrong decision but it was surely confusing for the fans. Thoughts?

    1. IMO completely correct. Using the trick is a YC offence (by the defender, not the GK) and the indirect free kick has to be executed at the place of that offence.

      Delete
    2. I agree. This was my guess too. But as you can see the players surely didn't understand from the begging. And guess what. The comentators in my country didn't get it neither. They haven't mentionated trick offence not even once.

      Delete
    3. The decision is correct. This trick is rarely seen at a football pitch and most of the fans and commentators don't know its existence and the punishment that the LOTG stipulate.

      Delete
    4. The Swiss commentators in the clip immediately understood the decision. They were only confused in the end, why the free kick wasn't taken in the penalty area.
