Fandel, former committe member, for Marciniak seems the most important observer of this set. In Ferencvárosi TC (HUN) - SK Slavia Praha (CZE) Tibor Vámos, former Kassai's AR in the historical trio, will make practice to become a UEFA delegate.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see Marciniak back! Hope he recovered from last year and to see his best!
DeleteGood match for Robert Madden also having the fact that the Elite referee from Scotland will be doing a Europa League game!!!
ReplyDeleteAny update on Oliver’s regular assistants???? And in previous years we begin to see the Elite referees from the playoff stage but I think because of the conference league the committee has to use a lot more referees this year
ReplyDeleteYes Chiagozie, reason for such early appointments of Elite referees is mostly Conference League, the latter becomes the former Europa League, so Champions League can be handled even in this round by Elite. Europa League turns in a middle way between Champions and Conference League.
DeleteAbout the assistant referees, given that in preliminary rounds before play off there is the chance to appoint NO FIFA officials, all choices are open, so we can't say anything.
The regular trio have always started to be appointed from CL play off in recent seasons.
For me it's a surprise that a high-rated referee like Makkelie get a martch in UCL in such an early phase. The others appointments of Elite referees have a judtified reason after Euro but Makkelie's presence here suprised me.
ReplyDeleteAll high ranked elite refs are appointed for CL round 3, either 1st leg or 2nd leg (except for Brych)
DeleteYes, @Known is right, almost nobody is missing, and remember that with Kuipers now and Brych in a few months retirements, the pool of Elite referees ia about to change.
DeleteWhy is Makkelie any different than the other Euro refs working today or next week (Cakir, Soares Dias, Vincic, Turpin, Taylor and Orsato)?
DeleteBecause he had more games than others and his last apparence, not very long time ago, ended with a big scandal.
DeleteIt is extremely common to appoint high-rated referee in early phase. The same happens every season
DeleteOrel Grinfeeld has been assigned to Ludogorets - Olympiakos, second leg (10 August).
ReplyDeleteInteresting that his appointment has been the last to be made.
They were waiting for his return from Olympic tournament, very likely they had to wait for the performance in his second game.
So he should be already travelling to Europe now.
Last minute change
ReplyDeleteFC Spartak Moskva (RUS) - SL Benfica (POR)
Referee: Srđan Jovanović (SRB, 1Cat)
Assistant Referee 1: Uroš Stojković (SRB)
Assistant Referee 2: Milan Mihajlović (SRB)
Fourth Official: Novak Simović (SRB)
Interesting, del Cerro Grande was planned since a very long time for this game in Russia, it had been the first known appointment with Hategan. Hope everything is fine for him.
DeleteUEFA: The Spanish referees were in close contact with a person who may have been infected with the COVID-19 virus, so UEFA took precautions and recalled them from the match.
DeleteThanks for the info, I knew that indeed in such situations, UEFA acts always in this way. It is good, but a pity for the officials who could have handled the game!
DeleteSome seconds before the Stal Mielec - Piast Gliwice game in Ekstraklasa, the producer as always showed a VAR booth. It could be seen that Tomasz Listkiewicz, Szymon Marciniak's regular AR, in this game as AVAR, had Olympics on his smartphone in front of him... Very unprofessional if you ask me.
ReplyDeletehttps://streamable.com/ic0sr5
Hopefully he turned everything off at the kick off, but indeed I must agree, not professional, not the right way to start to "be in the game".
DeleteSince Brych is missing, can we say he might get the Super cup appointment?? Just like last year when Taylor had it, he wasn’t involved in the appointment of the UCL play off last year ….
ReplyDeleteYes, we can. I think 90% Brych, 10% Hategan/Karasev.
DeleteSidiropoulos 65' with YC for Shakhtar but IMO RC would be better choice.
ReplyDeleteDo you know news about Marciniak performance ?
ReplyDeleteExtensive abbreviation Malmo-Rangers (Marciniak)
DeleteGood stamina and overall YC Positioning??? (5:20)
Generally there is a big smile (7:50)

Makkelie gave 8(!) minutes of added time im Cluj (against Young Boys Berne) Haven‘t watched the whole game but this long added time is because of time wasting only - no longer stoppages for VAR, injuries etc. Amazing statement by the referee if you ask me! And btw Berne scored the equaliser although in 90+2‘
ReplyDeleteIt was way too much. 5-6 minutes maximum. But the equaliser came in 90+3 so no problem for Makkelie in press.
Delete8 min. was spot on! Romanian started time wasting already in 1st half and continued in second half. Very negative way of playing by home team and very good that the referee recognized and acted against that! By the way Romanian goalkeeper was treated for injury in the final stages of the match, which took some time as well.
Delete77'Clear penalty missed by Madden, elbow to the face.
ReplyDeleteI saw that someone wrote Damir Skomina is retiring from refering?
ReplyDeleteAccording to Slovenian media it is true, he is retiring due to knee injury. Furthermore, they say he already became sports director of third league club Izola.
DeleteHategan in Belgrade with several mistakes. In very dangerous situation for Zvezda he whistled handball which didn’t occur - the ball clearly hit in the face attacker. Clear and obvious mistake. Also he missed several fouls and corner kicks that made players more nervous. Some correct cautions and correct second YC.
ReplyDeleteAfter the first Monaco goal Sparta Prague supporters allegedly showed racist behavior towards Tchouameni, the goal scorer. Referee Michael Oliver talked to Tchouameni, but no further action was taken and play restarted. If true, another case of despicable behavior, this time by the Czech fans
ReplyDeletehttps://sportklub.n1info.si/nogomet/regionalne-lige-nogomet/slovenija-nogomet/skrivnostna-izolska-zgodba-damirja-skomine/
ReplyDeleteGood to hear, indeed the article yesterday wasn't clear.
DeleteLet's wait for official communications, but based on what is reported there, no retirement and he will be back.
Damir Skomina in his instagram stories “the news are not true, i am recovering and i will be back when time comes”
DeleteUnfortunately, poor Jovanović today. Two handballs missed in the Spartak's penalty area - these fouls would have been whistled with VAR. Multiple other clear fouls missed including elbowings.
ReplyDeleteCan you report the minutes of the two handballs? Thanks!
DeleteAgree with Dmitry, missed bookings and handballs, not the best night for Jovanovic.
Delete55' and 70'
DeleteThanks Dmitry, two interesting incidents.
Delete55' - https://streamable.com/6du3yv
> Comparable to situation from TURITA at the EURO. Ball is expected by the defender whose arm is sticking out, enlarging his body surface, so despite hitting the arm more on the bicep, Milan Mihajlović should have shouted for a penalty in the comms kit.
69' - https://streamable.com/gn4kuv
> De facto impossible for the officials to assess (only AR Milan Mihajlović had any chance). And actually I like play on there, defender is making a normal football action and then a very obvious (but not deliberate!) handling occurs. I guess that non-refereeing people expect a penalty here though.
55' Supportable not to whistle IMO
Delete69' hard to tell, but if we consider the context, this handball really influenced the outcome of the action. It was accidental, but enlarging the body. For me a pk!
30', 55', 69'. Three handballs missed. Spartak players. No penalty given.
Delete33'. Handball. Spartak player. Penalty correctly not given.
51'. First goal. Offside missed.
@Unknown
DeleteFor me, only one situation is punishable (30').
69' Grey area
Very demanding situation at the first goal. Look at that again. I think AR2 made very good decision.
IMO
Delete55' Penalty for me. The defender makes a step with the right foot towards the ball and his left arm swings out; yet, I wouldn't say that the arm movement is justified by the step movement, because - despite having finished the step - the arm is kept in the position and enlarges the body surface quite significantly.
69' Correct decision here for me. The defender makes a little jump and because of that raises his hand. He has his arm in this position even before the ball is near; his arm position can be justified by his normal football movement for me.
Highlights are here but only one (55') of the two handball episodes is included

I've been watching Mateu Lahoz in GNK Dinamo - Legia Warszawa. The way he copes with dissent is excellent. First dissent in the game and instant YC to #97DZG (27'). DZG Coach had something to say about referees, he's instantly warned. DZG team member sent off in the 76th minute of the game. Result? Nobody even tried to question referees' decisions.
ReplyDeleteOtherwise, no issues with disciplinary control and foul detection. All cards correct, no mandatory cards missed. Dinamo's handball penalty appeal correctly turned down in 33'.
However, the crucial decision is a play-on call at penalty incident in 90+1'. My gut feeling is it should've been given (stamp?) but I need to rewatch it carefully.
I watched the game live at the stadium.
DeleteIn general, good performance in an easy game and great faultless ARs. However, 2 situation were controversial.
One was in the 1H when #21DZG was clearly pulled with 2 hands at 18m from the opponent box in promising attack. In the end "advantage" was given but the ball went away from the goal so it should have been whistled IMO.
90+1' Crucial situation and possible pk for stamp missed. Lahoz was very calm but the way that the attacker fell down for me is mandatory PK or a YC for simulation. Since Lahoz didnt give anything, I had an impression that he was not completely sure about the situation.
Video of the two incidents:
Deletehttps://streamable.com/4k4o8j
Oh, yes, I forgot that scene when writing a comment. Of course, it should've been a FK and YC for holding. As for the penalty incident, it's a missed penalty unfortunately. :/
DeleteI think both times no PK was right, good decisions by Lahoz IMO.
Delete90+1 I think no PK and noYC for simulation is the best option. There is contact on the side of the foot and if the PK was given, noVARint would be my preference. But the replays are not 100% conclusive.
IMO
Delete1 - Hmm, the holding is too obvious to be ignored I think. FK+YC to be given, but does the holding continue inside the box? Very difficult scene - probably, Lahoz' (whose view is obstructed anyway) decision was the most 'harmless' one.
2 - Play-on is supportable for me. The attacker realizes the contact on the side of his foot and falls mostly on his own accord, both feet swing back a bit excessively.
Another screenshot of 90+1'. I agree that it is a very challenging situation, but still with VAR I think it would have probably been an OFR. It is not only the side of the foot.

Situation mentioned by Referee 12 from Sidirópoulos' game:
ReplyDelete65' - Reckless vs. Violent Conduct incident
https://streamable.com/kcdydy
Thanks for the video, by watching it again I am more and more convinced it should be a RC.
DeleteI also think it's a RC. More interesting question, should VAR intervene?
DeleteNo other opportunity but a RC for me. The orange player swings out his arm violently and hits his opponent in the face while he clenched his fist.
DeleteI agree with all the comments above. Clear RC IMO.
DeleteI do wonder whether it was the FO or AR1 who suggested the YC.....
Red card is clear.
