ReplyDeleteHere in Italy both the national TV and the PAY TV miss always the toin coss before games, because, exaclt in that moment, they air the so called "super spot". I'm really angry for that, no chance to see the officials before kick off and that's happening for almost all big tournaments in recent times... one must download the game from a foreign broadcaster and then he can watch that...

DeleteLuckily, the public broadcasters aren't allowed to do ads after 20:00 (and not at all on Sundays), so we can see at least some of the coin tosses and referee presentations.
Here in Spain, with the exception of the opening game, I've missed the coin toss in every game cause the broadcast is busy showing some random advertising spot.

DeleteHere in NL this does not happen, the whole tournament is broadcast by a public broadcaster and as soon as they switch to the live match (5-10 mins before kick-off) there are no ads anymore until half-time or until the match is over. So we get to enjoy all ref presentations :)

Rosetti explained that for teams with captains who are goalkeepers (Italy and Slovenia), a second player of movement must be nominated.
DeleteItaly "appointed" Jorginho, so Donnarumma not allowed to talk to referee, but it seems he didn't know that..
And on top of that he is not allowed to leave the penalty area as being goalkeeper.

ReplyDeleteIt is an authorised trial by the IFAB, which UEFA has decided to apply in the EURO. IMO it is against the spirit of just about everything to run 'trials' in the biggest competition there is (at the continental level), but it's more than a "directive".

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, Vincic lacked a little empathy towards Donmarumma. If he is the captain and the outfield player to speak to the referee is Jorginho, the Slovenian should have given a verbal warning to avoid another complaint. At least I see it that way.

The follow-through studs tackle from 6'. Rosetti was clear about such challenges: if the ball is played and significant contact with an opponent follows, the standard is yellow card. That's why VAR didn't intervene.

Wow, really bad tackle. Certainly more red than yellow. In spite of playing the ball, he makes flush contact with the studs, using a straight leg, in the middle of the opponent's shin. I have it as a red card and (with the caveat that I'm not familiar with the instructions from UEFA) I am surprised the VAR didn't intervene.

DeleteIf Vincic wants to be as good or better than Skomina, he will have to change some things in his behavior in relation to the criteria of a match. He already has two finals under his belt, but we cannot forget the controversial Inter x Barcelona in which Joan Laporta sued UEFA regarding the Slovenian's performance in that match.

And this is something that could be observed in Vinčić's last two games: a too lenient 1H followed by tightening the grip in the 2H. It's not a positive thing at all, at least for me.
DeleteDespite the inconsistency no other option left here. I thought this was an extremely nasty foul… I can’t tell if it were a deliberate action, but Rodri’s knee could have been injured seriously. Cristante with his left leg steps on Rodri’s foot, locking it into the ground, and then putting pressure onto that same locked leg. Things could have ended worse for Rodri here.
DeleteI have to say I don't like this 1H performance at all. Vinčić is too lenient disciplinary wise, even going to extremes. Foul detection is ok, but the severity assessment and game reading in regard to them not at all. I've counted 4 YCs I deem as missed: 6' (ESP20, very reckless tackle), 34' (ESP17, reckless high kick), 36' (ITA2, SPA) and 43' (ITA5, SPA). Actually, the one in 6' is, IMO, a RC for SFP (contact with studs in the middle of the shin, a somewhat straight leg), however UEFA probably expects a YC because of the ball played before. Vinčić talks too much, but his game is on edge of boiling over; this is not how prevention should work, IMO.

Referee performances like this are so bad for the sport.
ReplyDeleteOn one hand, you have the Referee Committee touting how they're going to clamp down on dissent and overall boorish behavior.
On the other hand, we've got referee's who are allowing a lawless free for all and who are obviously doing everything they possibly can to not show any cards. Unless it's for dissent of course.
But I knew that it was too good to be true. The tournament was inevitably going to deteriorate and good back to the garbage football and Mr. Nice Guy I'm only here to ensure that there is a spectacle refereeing. Not to actually enforce the Laws of the Game, which are just SUGGESTIONS nowadays anyway.

After watching today's masterclass from Kovacs I will have to accept that performances like Kovacs would be rarity and more leneinand not brave enough refs we will see as the tournament goes on.
That goes for Vincic,Orsato,Guida and some others whose goal here is to finish the game under 3-4 cards.
Clearly someone pulls the strings for Vincic, who is a an average (at best) ref.

It is good to see that there is more or less unanimity in our assessments. A poor performance with serious shortcomings in almost all observer evaluation criteria.

There are a lot of refereeing experts on this site, it's often brought up and I would like to know more about the characteristics of the 19 EURO referees (for example, whether they are more lenient or more strict, etc. I don't know much about it, I didn't find a page about it here so far, and I would like to find out more. For example, I've read Here in the last few days that Vincic and Guida are very lenient). Would love to know the characteristics of the European Championship referees.

ReplyDeleteOnly Kovacs, Nyberg and Tello performed really well in my opinion. All the other referees had some difficulties, technical errors, foul detection errors etc.
I would say Meler performed really well as well. Yes he had two VAR interventions including one OFR, but it was a literally impossible handball to detect in real time so I don't think you can blame him for that at all
DeleteI'm sorry to say this, but I think we have just watched the first clearly bad performance in this tournament, at least in my opinion.
ReplyDelete2H started well, with an early YC to ITA16 in 46', however Vinčić soon continued down the same (wrong) path. Once again, I've managed to count 4 more or less clear YCs not given. With the 4 I mentioned in the previous comment about the 1H, that's EIGHT (8) missed YCs in a single match. I dare to say all of them were more than preferable: 63' (ITA9, step on foot), 73' (ESP3, step on foot), 88' (ITA16, SPA) and 89' (ITA19, reckless studs on ankle after the whistle). Making things even worse, two of those cards would have been 2YCs if given (73', 88'). Of course, some may say this is exaggeration on my part and the match would have ended in a disaster with so many cards given, but I actually think quite the contrary: with some early cards in the 1H, Vinčić would have set the tone for the rest of match, drawn a clear line and I'm more than sure players would have respected that. After all, they were just doing what was allowed to them. This is not how prevention works, far from that (and I speak this as a police officer, prevention is my life).
On the positive side, I cannot say his foul detection was bad, but he failed to properly assess their severity and context (SPA being an unsolvable problem tonight). The YCs he eventually gave were all correct for me: 46' (ITA16, reckless tackle), 69' (ESP3, reckless/SPA), 90+6' (ESP2, reckless tackle). I have the same opinion about the two YCs from the 1H, both given for dissent: 15' (ITA1) and 45+1' (ESP16). The one for Donnarumma was especially interesting: IMO, it was absolutely inappropriate from him to run all the way from his goal just to complain, no matter if he is the captain of the team. Rosetti's guidelines were clear, and this YC is one of very rare instances of praise I have for Vinčić tonight (everyone is free to disagree, of course).
Unfortunately, the level of control and player management presented by Vinčić was equally bad, IMO. Just look at his "prevention" on set pieces: it's literally non-existent. For example, we can analyse the warnings before the corner for ITA in 86': endless talking without any real effect on the players; they just seem to ignore him completely, doing whatever they were doing a few seconds before, and such behaviour was visible throughout the whole match. I'm sorry, but it really looks bad. His own leniency literally stripped him off his own authority. At least that's my feeling after watching this game. I also cannot say he managed to establish a proper connection with the players, as one more thing that was missing in this performance.
Lastly, after reviewing the potential penalty for ITA in 86', I'm more and more convinced that the whole crew, including VAR, missed a pretty clear holding by Carvajal which eventually brought down the Italian player. I need to review the situation again, but my first conclusion would be: a missed penalty and missed VAR intervention.
To conclude: it is very difficult to find positive points in this performance (even the added time management was deficient, after all). As I said in my first sentence, this was the first performance of this tournament I will consider "bad".
And he will not be punished for that.

There is too much focus on the negative, instead of highlighting the positive and/or deep-analysing how a referee can improve certain aspects.
With this comment, I bid adieu. In the past few days I truly enjoyed reading some of your comments and points of view because the officiating had started so promisingly.
ReplyDeleteBut inevitably, as we've seen at all recent tournaments. Things always take a turn for the worse for the referee's.
It's become quite clear to me, that the refereeing is regressing back to the lawless, overly lenient, too player friendly garbage level that is supposedly good for the "spectacle". And for me, it's no longer fun watching the games and I refuse to be part of the problem.
I would love nothing more than to watch a tournament in which the officiating remains the same from the opening match all the way through to the Final. If players get cautioned, sent off, or miss games because of card accumulation. Oh well, too bad! Act right on the pitch and you won't get booked or sent off. It is not the referee's job coddle the players and disregard the Laws of the Game in the process.
With that said, the Ref Comm can take their pre tournament directives/instructions and put them where the sun don't shine. You can't tout clamping down on certain aspects of the game. While at the same time encouraging your referee's to completely disregard the Laws of the Game. And asking them to be overly lenient, lawless, and toothless on the pitch. Which in turn leads to referee's allowing their games to deteriorate into ugly and unattractive free for alls.

I can remember prime example in Qatar.
MD1 we were all praising refs.
Number of cards and punishments were astonishing and rightly so.
As the tournament progressed,more and more leniency and more protecting players to not have accumulated cards.
There I only see 2 solutions:
1)Referees needs to referee games,not manage how much cards players have
2)UEFA should extend number of cards needed to be suspended on 3,or that cards are erasing after Group Stage.
That wsy we have more relaxed players and refs.
Until these problems are sorted we will have performances like Vincic's.

@Kruzliak: I think, his first performance simply deserves another game.
Delete@Guida: Here I am less convinced, but I rather expect another appointment, because he got a good game early on and wasn't bad in it.
@Kovacs: Yes, not the best game, but I think, Albania has a better chance than MKD in 2021. It just worked out that way in my predictions, but I agree that he is a candidate for bigger tasks, e.g. also CRO-ITA.
@Zwayer: I don't assume that, but maybe you are right.
@Philipp: At least, he didn't get any England, Dortmund or now Real game since this "incident".

DeleteAn old friend (also a mentor when I was a young referee) watched Argentina v Canada tonight. He reached out to me after the match to talk about it and about the referee (Jesus Valenzuela - VEN).
ReplyDeleteI told him that I hadn't watched it because I decided to not watch any Copa America matches. I explained my reasoning and he understood and fully supported my choice.
He then went on to tell me that I was not wrong in my perception of the officiating. He said that Valenzuela's performance exemplified everything that is wrong with so called modern refereeing and its modern referee's. With the actions at minutes 70 to 73 as a prime example.
I watched that game, most of it, and I am not so sure in that point. We have to accept another culture, bringing another style of refereeing, which means, to show YCs only, when someone fouls deliberately, but to accept, that the foul as part of fight for the ball and even dangerous attacks with that aim are part of the show. Like it or not, Valenzuela followed that line, still showed a bunch of YCs, but let the game flow and obviously the players liked that style. With a typical European there would have been minimum 2 RCs, many more FKs, but less dynamic. The biggest problem in refereeing are not wrong lines, but NO lines and a lack of foul det.

ReplyDeleteI was at the match yesterday and nobody talked about the referee after the match. All yc looked excellent from the tribune. I don't know if it was shown on the TV but Donarumma ran 30 meters to the referee to protest. Total control through the whole match. Excellent movements.
This was my last post here. Thank you for a lot of educational content in the past years. I would recommend admins to focus more on the valuable content and not limit this blog only to commenting the referees. These comments are obviously influenced by hatred and jealousy.

DeleteWhat a shame this game was ! Vincic completely lost the plot in the first half and left too many contacts unpunished. Probably for me the worst performance during this EURO, but I still think he will get a KO match as he has refereed a lot of big clashes.
ReplyDeleteAbout the Donnarumma YC, it is important to underline that both Italian public and PAY TV yesterday, and the most important sport newspaper today (La Gazzetta dello Sport) didn't know more about the detail explained by Rosetti in press conference, and they all reported, live yesterday and today on the articles, that it is very harsh if a captain is booked. They all know about the strict guidelines by committee (but no more than that). So we should draw conclusion that if the communication is not efficient, the only people informed about the important news of refereering, are the ones who read this blog. Rosetti also wrote a letter to La Gazzetta dello Sport, as you remember, but then nothing followed about keeping updated. That's in my opinion unacceptable, all people paid for following football games at EURO totally unaware of that.

To this I add a true story. My German friend watched all matches. He is the kind of fan that purchases a good big plasma screen for watching football so he could really see the game well. During Germany-Costa Rica match he noticed a very large player being clearly addressed and fully controlled in front of the goal by a very small person. He was impressed by this referee, but was very shocked that when he finally saw the face that it was in fact a woman. Before that he had no idea, because he cares about good football not doesn't follow referees. He said he would be glad to have her referee matches in the future.
I come to this blog to learn, and I watch the matches differently as a result of how much I have in fact learned. Even I was shocked by the lack of yellow cards, especially for the dangerous defensive high kick. Perhaps I am not the only one who thinks Ms Frappart would have done much better last night. I saw this because of her performance history in WC, not because she happens to be a woman.
