Two English referees the same day means that one must get a VAR from a different country, but one should start to wonder about Siebert. Is he available? I find strange that he has not been appointed so far, even more in this set with a German VAR for an English referee at his second game, indeed. Wasn't Slovakia - Ukraine a possible game for Siebert?
ReplyDeleteAbout Marciniak, we should know the reason, but still, very harsh punishment if you ask me. Committee wants that the referee will be 100% hidden before his frst assignment.
Good that Meler got very quickly his second game, well deserved, this means the handball had no important impact on his assessment, and I was sure.
Marciniak will be at Portugal vs Turkey. Siebert I expect to be at Czech with Georgia, and Zwayer for Belgium vs Romania. So, still 3 games are remaining for Saturday
DeleteYes, Marciniak and Siebert in group F makes sense now. And then, it would be no problem to also use them in group E on MD3 (if they are supposed to get a 2nd GS game).
DeleteFor BEL-ROU, it could be Zwayer, but also Gil Manzano, Orsato or Tello. I would predict the Spaniard there.
It looks like the committee will give Siebert the same treatment they gave Kovacs in EURO 2020, while it looks like he will be given a minor match in MD3.

Siebert surely now with Marciniak for games on 22nd. Because all German VAR's used the day before, Zwayer could well be saved for a MD 3 game.
Should we read anything into Nyberg as 4O? Surely he is still set to get another group stage game after his performance
ReplyDeleteI don't think we should, honestly. If we look at the 4th officials assigned to the 'high-profile' games until now, we got Letexier in GER-SCO, Taylor in ESP-CRO, Turpin in ITA-ESP. Nyberg is here because it is a sonorous clash. His sound performance in ROU-UKR definitely didn't discard him form further appointments as referee.

This leaves for the 2 games with un-attached officials as Tello, Nyberg & Marciniak. Nyberg is 4th official on 21st so only 24hrs rest (still possible).
Then we have Manzano, Guida & Orsato - all of their home countries could play teams in group A and should be avoided (maybe refcom are waiting for today's result to best determine who could play who).
Why is Letexier unlikely?

He was 4th official in group A and Turpin has had a game in that group, surely another French official can be avoided in a European tournament?
DeleteGood start for Taylor, Oliver is a normal match and Meler definitely deserved it, I think we can see Orsato and Siebert in group F matches, probably Marciniak is being saved for group B MD3 matches

DeleteI don't know how this is being experienced by everyone, but I have the feeling that the matches in general have calmed down a few degrees with the stricter protocol on mass complaining.
ReplyDeleteThere have been a few situations in where the match heated up and a mass complaint with the referee would be normal before the EURO's. Also yesterday after the surprising opening goal of Czech there hasn't been a big situation. EG the missed foul on the side line before the 2-1 of Portugal.
I know, one swalow doesn't make a summer as we say in the Netherlands. But the first signs are hopefull after MD1 has been completed. And that without a lot of YC for this situation to get the authority and to stay out of more of these situations.
I have to commend the performance of the referees so far. Completely out of the spotlight in all games (bar meler eventhough he was correct with the rules of the law.) They have allowed the games to be an excellent spectacle and performed well. Long may it continue.
ReplyDeleteWell, Gil Manzano and Guida certainly got some spotlight due to their mistakes before decisive goals - although there was no direct connection. At least in German media, those situations were pointed out and the referees were criticized for them.
DeleteIn UK Guida isn’t mentioned - only Meler and Manzano. Oliver got some criticism for not sending off Rodri but everyone hates referees here, he’d have been “wrong” no matter what

DeleteTurpin did the worst job yet.
So a quick second game for Meler. Some folks on this blog wrote him off but this appointment shows that VAR interventions for situations that are terribly hard to see on the field are not considered "mistakes". I also appreciate the appointment because Meler simply did a very good job in his match.

I think this is typical Italian behavior, because the Belgian coach also made the same objections and the Hungary coach, they are all Italian, but I don't think it is too exaggerated, players or coaches in almost every position give these reactions.

The referees are getting praise for coming to 'quick VAR' decisions forgetting of course that this is an elite tournament, UEFA are showcasing VAR technology and the very best views, angles and to the second decisioning is available to all referees.

ReplyDeleteThe application of the yellow card for dissent has not been done well. Players have been awarded a caution for approaching the referee even in a mild manner (where there is no dissent) i.e. simply speaking to him.
ReplyDeleteBy all means if I player is chasing after you and shouting - yellow. Don't caution a player for asking a question this is nonsense.
