  1. I say it ... many of others say turpin get the clash of serbia - Denmark.
I had it right and its good for Letexier, he deserve it.

Turpin a low profile match after a poor opening game.

    Kruzliak surprising for me.

    Group E:
    Manzano and Taylor

    Group F:
    Scharer and Kovacs

  2. First thing we can say looking at this very important set of assignments is that Rosetti wants to keep the standard of two appointments for all referees, if possible. By numbers, as we know, this should rule out two referees left with only one game. Now, considering that Turpin performance has been definitely the worst so far, and he got a second game as well, the choice of referees with only one assignment very likely has been done before the start of the tournament. To be honest I still think it's hard to imagine, but at moment one should mention Marciniak and Siebert as "candidates" for this treatment. The chance of getting directly a KO stage after only one Gs exists, but it would look very out of context, given how committee is working...

    1. In my book, it is much more likely that two referees go straight to the knockout stage than somebody is left with one match.

The biggest candidates according to performance for only one match, besides Turpin, were Guida (bad second half) and Kruzliak (not so good job for the reasons I explained), but they have been selected in the easiest MD3 group. Unlike three years ago (Ekberg), there has been no disaster performance this time.

There are six candidates for the games tomorrow.
It seems likely, imo, to see sth like this:

      Slovakia-Romania: Siebert
      Ukraine-Belgium: Manzano
      Czech-Turkey: Kovacs
      Georgia-Portugal: Scharer
(straight to knockout: Taylor + Marciniak)

    2. Siebert is done i guess ... not so good yesterday.

The rest of your assignments are the right one i guess

    3. Mikael touched a subject that I was thinking about recently. I have not seen comments that would clearly indicate the end of the torunament for a referee. No "this is it, poor performance, he is going home" or "unacceptable mistake, end of the torunament for him". There were such remarks at the last Euro and at the last WC. So, the referees are doing a good job at this tournament, isn't it? We have no big controversies and everybody can be happy and satisfied with his work. Or the other option, maybe we set the performance bar too low and should have higher expectations? I mean, it is normal to try to defend the referees and their decisions when possible because we understand that it is a difficult job. I fear that sometimes despite highlighting some mistakes we tend to minimize them subconciounsly. They can be all sort of things to be improved, players management, fouls detection, disciplinary sanctions, KMIs etc. I saw plenty of comments like "overall good performance", "decent job", "sucesfully fulfilled his task", "mostly a good performace", "we can't really blame him for not seeing that." So far it feels like almost everybody, maybe with 2-3 exceptions, deserve KO stage based on performances. It could be the case, I don't say is impossible, maybe the refereeing level was high so far. It is too early now to ask who is going home after the group stage, we must wait for the MD3 games to end.

    4. Kovacs, Marciniak and Taylor (because of Oliver on MD2) normally can only work in group F and it would be strange, if one of them remains with one game. So they nearly have to send one of them straight to R16.
Only way to avoid that would be two English referees in a row for Slovakia or Ukraine.

For me, it still seems possible, that Gil Manzano remains with one game, because I personally didn't really like his first performance - and also his pre-tournament status could not have been great (no CL KO game).
      But probably politically difficult anyway.

    5. @Matei: my opinion is that the refereeing has been quite good but we should remember:

      - the matches have (especially in MD1) been mostly easy
      - twelve VAR interventions have been required; there were only seventeen in the last whole last Euro (intv every (24/12) two matches rather than (51/17) three)

      According to this…

      https://mikaelreferee.blogspot.com/p/evaluation-scale.html

…scale, I would personally grade the performances so far like this:

      GerSco Turpin 5️⃣ *

      EspCro Oliver 7️⃣

      * despite the 'failed' mark, we can recognise this referee showed significant skills during the match

** borderline to be rejected but no foul by Gundogan can be judged as a supportable call
*** borderline to be rejected for no control starting from 85’ but overall I’d judge the refereeing as acceptable

    6. Have read your blog and scoring system which is interesting.
As you most probably know the observation systems in different countries are under review as it is considered as not enough transparent, scoring range is too limited, and leading to an average score for most referees of 8,3. which doesn't say too much.
An idea is a.o. to extend the scoring from 0-100 to have a larger range to distinguish.

Compliments with your advanced way of thinking and acting

    7. IMO Vincic to be rejected for his performance. So far the weakest one, imo.

    8. PolAut Meler 7️⃣

Agree with both the 77' (sabitzer makes a show in the end but szczesny clearly impeded where he wanted to go first) and 88' (not really enlarging, ball would have hit his head otherwise) penalty box calls. More an 'assessor's referee' than 'player's referee' and never fully convinces me in foul recognition, but good use of cards and second solid performance in this tournament. Ready for a third game.

(thanks for the nice words profref!)

    9. I have not seen all the games because of the lack of time but I agree with your grades on the ones I watched. Nice work!

  3. A big match for Kruzliak, he definitely deserved it, a minor match for Guida, maybe he wasn't liked in the first match, Turpin comes back with a big match and it's a tough game, the committee definitely trusts him, and Letexier is definitely impressing everyone in his young form.

    1. Big match Turpin?
Sorry that isnt... He was bad the first match and maybe the last one and then and of tournament

      Letexier has a big match.

    2. Game is important for qualification, England almost qualified, but you know, against Slovenia, you have a clearly favorite team, and the expectations were different for the French. It's clearly a sub standard appointment for him after the first performance.

      Delete
    3. Looking at the last match played by England, I can definitely say that England will not win easily and the Slovenians will not lose very easily. Yes, it is not a very big match, but in my opinion, it is not a small-medium match either.

  4. Big game for Kruzliak, unexpected appointment for me but deserved, I guess... I am not very happy with the management of Turpin. After a poor performance in the opening game I think a recovery game in MD2 was a better choice instead of one in MD3. Letexier has the more difficult game however in group C, it is not impossible that the two French referees were swapped in the initial plan. Guida has a game which is good only because of the names of the teams because in reality one team is already qualified and the other one eliminated. Strictly referring at the names, he will have two sonorous games on paper in the group stage in CV which is more than many expected at the begining of the tournament and could help him in the future.

    1. Looking in detail group D situation, we can notice that, while Guida game is definitely the least important so far in the tournament, NED - AUT can be considered a step below other matches, because at moment Austria is first placed in the ranking of third-placed teams. This should mean that they could qualify even with a loss, so all teams are very close to qualification in this group, apart from Poland, already eliminated. Committee for sure looked also at this particular, a suitable gme for the referee for Slovakia, surely more difficult than FRA - POL, but still, not a real "play off" without appeals.
Nevertheless, I think that he hadn't been so poor in his first appearance, and analyzing also his background, committee was surely satisfied.

  5. Elite athletes want to be on the pitch, they don't want to sit on the bench or in the hotel room. That goes for referees as well. R16 is the 4th match for the teams in two weeks; why should UEFA save some referee teams with only one GS match before R16? The only reason I can think of is a predetermined path for the final referee: GS + R16 + QF + F.

  6. Would have preferred the Frenchmen the other way, Lettexier has impressed me, where as Turpin can have odd moments. That said, we should be too strong for Slovenia and take the game away from any refs decisions

    1. I think, the quality of the games in group C is very similar. DEN-SRB is the tighter and more decisive game, but ENG-SVN probably gets more attention - because of England involved. E.g. in Germany, the big channel shows ENG-SVN.
So hard to say, who among the two Frenchmen is actually preferred by UEFA at the moment.

  7. A bit surprising, that Letexier doesn't work with Delajod again. Apparently it is more important for UEFA, that he assists Brisard in the parallel game.

  8. About predicting tomorrow's appointments: it has been pointed out to me that there is surely no chance for Gil Manzano to handle Ukraine, after the famous game last November.

    1. Yes, this was my point as well.

After yesterday, the most probable scenario for me is Marciniak directly to R16 and Siebert with only one match. He (D.S.) was a little unlucky with 2 OFR (in the 1-st situation almost impossible to spot the hand live) but there were more issues for him: strange card selection (wrong YC for Czech captain), not optimal foul detection (wrongly awarded DFK before a penalty situation). He wasn't bad at all but if he wanted the second match he should have done better.

My predictions: SVK - ROU Gil Manzano, UKR - BEL Schärer; CZE - TUR Kovács, GEO - POR Taylor.

Maybe risky appointment prediction for Schärer but GEO - POR is tricky and more suitable for somebody like Taylor.

It is really interesting to see how RefCom strategy to appoint top referees for one top match and one not so big works. Nobody had 2 really big matches.

  9. I enjoy this expert lottery game.
Read with pleasure and sometimes surprise how we try to predict UEFA's inimitable appointment process, as well as the interpretation of which match is normal, difficult, and very difficult.
In many cases even with good and imitable arguments. Admire your knowledge and inside information to do so.

Curious who will win and look forward to your next "crystal ball"predictions.

  10. Options for the remaining referees with only one game so far:

Schärer and Taylor can be appointed in both groups.
    Siebert only group E.
Marciniak, Kovács, Gil Manzano only group F.

    1. All I can say is no second game (at least so far...) for Gil Manzano and Marciniak.

  11. I think we won’t see the same approach to managing dissenting behaviour in the Espanyol-Oviedo playoff this afternoon as in the Euro :D. Correct no penalty decision at 10’ despite the appeals of the hosts by the ex-Primera official Adrian Cordero Vega, who is the match referee.

    1. Caution at 41’, third booking of the game, was a borderline to SFP challenge.

Typical Cordero refereeing: many play on calls — some (very) good, others much more dubious — and always staying calm, which is more than can be said for the many furious complaints by Espanyol. Bearing everything in mind, pretty decent first half by the referee.

      Delete
    2. With Espanyol having turned the deficit around at the end of the 1H, rather calmer second half for Cordero Vega; deliberate fouling in the first few minutes of 2H substitute Cazorla's second half excluded.

Pretty good job by the referee overall; if one viewed the appointment of the Cantabrian ref 'sacrifically' (ie. RFEF plan to promote (≥)two different officials and used CV only for his experience in this final), then I must say that Cordero gave them reasons to promote him instead with a 'mature' piece of refereeing in this playoff.

      Delete
    3. Agreed, solid job from Cordero Vega on the whole.

On a side note: surely the 64' caution is a RC at this Euro right ? :)

  12. Prediction 26 June
    Slovakia – Romania: Siebert
    Ukraine – Belgium: Taylor
    Georgia – Portugal: Scharer
    Czech Republic – Türkiye: Kovacs

    Very, very difficult prediction.

  13. And a slightly early prediction:
Final and 1/ 2 final: Orsato, Makkelie , Vincic and Kovacs
1/4 final: Oliver, Dias, Letexier, Zwayer, Tello

    ReplyDelete
  14. Final: Orsato
    Semifinals: Taylor, Kovacs
    Quarterfinals: Makkelie, Letexier, Meler, Oliver
