18' Ball played only by Swiss player, and that's clear, but I'm in trouble to see the effects of the contact by German player who comes later, is that a real foul? in such situations, referee should be called at monitor only if very clear... well, I have doubts, but I just watched a couple of replay, doesn't look German player makes a significant contact on the leg of opponent... but wil rewatch

Honestly I think it's quite harsh to disallow the goal. Musiala's contact is, if anything, careless and happens after the Swiss defender played the ball. No impact on the defender's ability to play the ball at all. If Orsato would have whistled, definitely supportable but I struggle to see grounds for a VAR Intervention.
DeleteSame goes for the penalty appeal by Germany. Fully okay with no VAR Intervention but a penalty whistled by Orsato would have been supported too.
In all cases, this OFR puts definitely in trouble Orsato. We can already imagine a scenario in which there will be final candidates without any single OFR in their games, so surely Orsato had to be almost faultless.

Not the best half from Orsato. Clear foul missed (OFR), soft first yellow card and some minor mistakes (soft free kicks, wrong corner kick). Regarding match control; the usual good Orsato!

So while I think, this is a relatively clear foul, I have big doubts about the reviewability.
That's a very interesting remark, but I think the protocol doesn't give us a clear solution.

I don't remember similar cases so far, but I would easily say most of VAR wouldn't join tjhis area of discussion, and they would call this one in case of foul assessment...

Decent 1st half for Orsato. Keep the game flow, one OFR(nothing what is possible to se live), nobody speak with him, so we can be satisfied with how he do his job. Hope that he continiue and make his performance top in this game.

But, full control,some excellent no calls, full acceptance and respect from playes. His path to final continiues, and only,based on perfromance criteria candidate for final can be Tello, or Kovacs! @HaGo Was it irony? Are all of his comments just for jokes? Because they all read exactly the same no matter the performance, consistently throughout the tournament so far. It's purely praise and exxuses whenever a ref makes a mistake. If anything I'm surprised he didn't say this was "flawless" like Orsato's previous game (which too was far from perfect).
DeleteAfter almost all EURO games played so far rather boring, also under the refereeing point of view (unless Turpin in the opener), today we had definitely an intense set with many discussions and crucial incidents in both games. For sure committee would have liked the trend to continue, but they must face this one.
ReplyDeleteIn SUI - GER some borderline incidents and an OFR, while in Tello game to me, Hernandez Hernandez should be immediately rejected with the worst VAR performance so far, two missed penalty.
In case, I could close my eyes for the second incident in second half, but well, the first one in first half...

Does anyone know when referees are sent home this year? Surely some after the group stage? And at what stage do they have to go home if their nation is still in the tournament, QF or SF?

• Orsato remained in control of the entire match and was not/hardly influenced by comments or outside pressure and kept his chosen line of control till the end. He was and remained “the boss”
• Seemingly effective in communicating with players, although sometimes a bit naughty, but that is his style.
• Good functional arm signalling when giving an advantage or in case of no fault. Strong body language.
• Very good offside recognition by Ar 2 at the "2-0" Switzerland
Main AFI’s
• OFR necessary after German goal 17’. Fault should have been detected by Orsato himself. Culpable Match-influencing foul by Orsato!
• Disciplinary management was imo too flexible, not consistent and sometimes difficult to understand. ( YC for Xhaka , Beier holding in 70' not penalized (PK).Orsato tried to keep the game flowing at risk of a too high threshold for foul recognition and punishment.
• Bench control (Germany) too tolerant in respect of UEFA guidelines. 4th Official!
• Did not sufficiently control the pushing and pulling before corner kicks and free kicks.
• Compared to other colleagues, he doesn't made the fittest impression.
In summary for me a performance not at the required and expected level.
Very good summary. Only small remark: not awarded penalty in 70´ is special point for me, it shouldn't be taken as part of disciplinary management.

DeleteYes, Orsato is definitely discussed, his name is in Twitter trends, also discussed by Italian people who watched the game (this was the game selected for public TV, so more watching it than the other), and I'm absolutely suprised because it's the first time ever I see such stuff (pictures, statements) by German fans and accounts against a referee.

Germany had possession and were attacking, with the SUI defender only clearing the ball in front of Musiala, that came from a cross by a GER player on the left. This clearance only resulted in immediate repossession by Germany and a final shot that resulted in a goal. I don't think we can interpret the clearance, without any actual control over the ball, as cancelling the APP. Maybe I'm absolutely wrong on this, but I didn't find anything specific in the protocol. It's certainly a very good question.

This short analysis shows us, that we don't have a too many option (regardless final teams), so I suppose that commitee forgive him this performance (specially that was without consequences), and Orsato remains like a main contender for final. My bet? He will get a big QFs as a test and match for recovering and if he passed, he will get a final.
Who if no Orsato? Vincic? Come on..

ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, Orsato's performance in this game wasn't on a required level, IMO. While his usual strong characteristics were visible in this match as well, some technical errors in decision making, two of them crucial, led the performance into a certain "red zone".
ReplyDeleteOrsato's usual lenient line in foul detection was present again, with him trying to let the game flow as much as possible, which is a more than logical pre-match choice for a game between these two teams, but I somehow believe it led to him losing focus in important situations a bit, with a too strong accent on "letting things go". To avoid any controversy, I'll start by saying I hold him responsible for both KMI referee errors in this match. Although some commenters disagree, I find the OFR to cancel a GER goal in 19' to be completely logical, at least to me. It seems that Orsato misjudged what was, IMHO, a rather clear foul. However, I strongly argue that the missed penalty for GER in 70' was a bigger mistake of the two, with another misjudgment by Orsato (at least according to his pretty strong body language), but also the VAR crew. After rewatching the incident again and again, I still cannot find any reason for such a decision, on an actually wrestling move by the defender and no actual holding/pulling on Baier's part, whose hand was rather stuck between the bodies and who was the only one trying to play the ball in that situation. To be honest, it's an inexplicable decision to me, especially taking into account Rosetti's publicly given guidelines on holding offences in the PA. However, to be completely fair, I think Orsato solved two more potential penalty situations for GER well, correctly denying them in 13' and 80'.
In regards to the disciplinary line, while his first verbal warning to SUI26, for a late foul in 1', was quite strong and well chosen, the same cannot be said about a rather wrong YC to SUI19 in 25', for what was esentially just a careless foul. On the other hand, I think the other three YCs issued were fully correct: 38' (GER4, borderline to RC, but without much force), 67' (SUI10, reckless studs on foot incident) and 81' (SUI3, SPA/LoR). His control over the game and players was never in question (no matter the deficiencies in technical accuracy), with his usual strong authority and really good body language in heated moments.
Both ARs solved some tight situations optimally, with two excellent onside decisions by AR1 before each goal and an equally excellent offside to cancel a potential 2-0 goal of SUI by AR2 in 84'.
To conclude: although I liked most of his play on calls (e.g. 77', 86'), it was a performance marred by two errors on Orsato's part, one of which was timely corrected, but with the other staying as a rather inexplicable mistake by the on field crew, and especially VAR (I cannot find any reason not to recommend an OFR in this situation). Therefore, I think the performance needs to be given an overall negative mark, in spite of the many positive features the referee crew presented.
To be honest, this was (one of) the weakest performance we've seen so far. What I always find fascinating when watching Orsato is his natural, almost effortless natural 'aura' that always makes him look soo in charge & firm that he almost never really loses the grip on a match even when things get a bit heated. We also saw this yesterday IMO.
ReplyDeleteBut if we look a bit more isolatedly on the scenes, he visibly struggled with technical accuracy, also connected with his difficulties to keep up with the match physically - besides a wrong YC and a few weird (no-)foul calls, this became especially appearent in the two KMIs.
IMO, the foul prior to potential 1-0 given after OFR was rather clear with the attacker simply going too forcefully into the duel. He could have spotted this one live I think but in the end this won't be the biggest issue.
But: I still cannot believe the missed penalty for Germany for excessive holding. This was NOT a situation in which two players fight for the ball, hold each other and ultimately one falls to the ground. Here, the defender is simply in a weaker position and he is even partly behind (!) the attacker. His obvious holding only unfairly prevents the attacker from reaching the ball. In such situation we should always look at the context -Who is in a better position? Is the holding preventing a player from reaching the ball?
In this case, I'd argue the offence is really clear! Missed VAR-intervention. Maybe Irrati thought the significance/impact of the holding wasn't clear enough. Or he simply didn't want to put more pressure on Orsato with a second OFR. I'm sure everyone knows how serious Orsato's chance for the final is - a special situation.
In the end, I'd give Orsato a grade 5 & Irrati a grade II.
You name it: To beware Orsato's chance for the finale, they avoided a second OFR, denied Germany a clear penalty and influenced this game massively
Delete1) Having skimmed through the comments, I expected a much worse performance by Orsato with many missed fouls etc. The (clear! :)) foul before the goal at 17' was an evident mistake and was a slack lapse by the Italian ref. The game's first booking was also wrong, obviously misperceived as a reckless step-on-foot, but PERSONALLY I don't have a problem with the 70' non-penalty, Beier was also backing into Widmer to try and win an advantage. Penalty wouldn't have been a wrong call! But I don't think we are talking about Mitrovic/2018 here. Orsato indeed never looked 100% settled, and there could have been some Italian curse words uttered not only at fulltime, but in the comms between him and Giallatini with those delayed flag incidents. The rest generally was fine to be honest.

2) There is old adage that in football ‘a two-nil lead is a dangerous scoreline’. Well, it is quite clear that Daniele Orsato started this tournament not just one, but indeed two ‘goals’ clear of all his rivals for the Euro final this time round (as fest absolutely rightly wrote about above). Last night, even moreso than Serbia-England which was a relatively challenging game, Orsato had everything to lose and very little really to win (SuiGer generally wasn’t difficult to ref). I’m quite sure that this situation doesn’t encourage excellent refereeing; probably Italy’s leading ref was just glad to get off the pitch last night before something (else) could have happen to damage his final chances. I know WC/EURO is apples and oranges but just compare how hard Webb and Elizondo had to work in 2010 and 2006 resp, how many challenging games and situations they had to navigate, before deservedly receiving the big call up. Orsato, really, only has to stumble over the line this time.
And finally, by the way, he exactly follows Kuipers run three years ago: okay/lenient first game, shaky second with an ofr, adequate third… we can only hope for the same masterclass in the fourth, if indeed it comes to pass.
To add: unacceptable non-enlargement of added time by Orsato, could have had a clear impact on the group standings.
