After having asked for the opinion about the main referee to be appointed for the final match, I don't want to influence more our readers, also because we have an open game with predictions. However, we can focus on VAR. The argument has been discussed on the blog and many readers have shown to be interested, therefore it will be interesting to point out some data.
FIFA VAR Room in Moscow: a view from above |
Massimiliano Irrati (ITA) 13
Danny Makkelie (NED) 11
Felix Zwayer (GER) 8
Mauro Vigliano (ARG) 7
Daniele Orsato (ITA) 7
Mark Geiger (USA) 4
Clément Turpin (FRA) 3
Artur Soares Dias (POR) 3
Paolo Valeri (ITA) 2
Bastian Dankert (GER) 1
Sandro Ricci (BRA) 1
Szymon Marciniak (POL) 1
Tiago Bruo Lopes Martins (POR) 1
FIFA had originally confirmed 13 officials with VAR duties at this WC: not all of them got matches as main VAR. Indeed, Wilton Sampaio from Brazil, Pawel Gil from Poland, Gery Vargas from Bolivia and Abdulrahman Al Jassim from Qatar never worked as main VAR, they only got matches as either AVAR1 or AVAR3.
Mark Geiger, Clément Turpin, Sandro Ricci and Szymon Marciniak, originally appointed as main referees, worked as main VAR, coming from countries in which the system is already used, or however being expert.
In my opinion the two candidates for the final are Massimiliano Irrati (ITA) and Danny Makkelie (NED). The Italian has a very high number of matches at this WC (13), he has been a big surprise, because I thought that originally a name like Orsato could have been ahead, given the domestic experience. He was not expected to get all these games, at least if you ask me. Very likely, the 39 years old from Tuscany had shown more than good and appreciated performances as VAR in serie A and this led him to gain a very good experience. However, for sure Danny Makkelie can be seen as even more expert, because we can consider him as pioneer of VAR introduction in Europe, thank also to a very good work done by Dutch federation in improving this technology. FIFA is for sure aware of that, and also for this reason they consider the Dutch as a very strong name.
Both Irrati and Makkelie got a semifinal, this very likely means that one of them will get the final while the other one maybe the third place. Now it's your turn. Please vote our poll. Who is your favorite VAR for the final?
Makkelie - very good WC as VAR for him. The best on this WC with some very good decisions.
ReplyDeleteSorry there was a malfunction in the poll.
ReplyDeleteWho voted is invited to vote again.
I vote dit the best and the best is Danny Makkelie het proved to be the best VAR of this years World Cup
ReplyDeleteI voted for Irrati but in a it belongs to the final referee. So in a final with an UEFA referee I think Makkelie is ahed of Irrati. So there are two different team options:
ReplyDeleteUEFA referee / Faghani or Conmebol referee
VAR: Makkelie / Irrati
AVAR1: Dankert / Gil
AVAR2: Borsch or Astroza or Díaz / Astroza or Díaz
AVAR3: Zwayer / Orsato or Valeri
I agree. Irrati should be the first choice at least for Faghani, Pitana and Ricci, because he worked a lot with them.
DeleteZwayer might have a small chance, if Diedhiou is appointed, because of their R16 match.
I vote for Makkelie. Even when Faghani is the referee for the final, they can work together. Both can communicate in English. It's the same like working with different 4th officials. They are professionals and in the final it's all about the best ones.

ReplyDeleteWhat?! That was just an excellent intervention. If he would have supported that penalty then VAR would not have been taken serious any more. It was very brave to call Kuipers.
DeleteMy appointment:
ReplyDeleteVAR: Irrati;
AVAR 1: Makkelie;
AVAR 2: Astroza
AVAR 3: Geiger
I think that both Irrati and Makkelie have never done AVAR3, so who won't be the VAR in the final, will be the VAR in the final for 3rd place.
ReplyDeleteIrrati was three times (IRN - ESP, NGA - ARG and SWE - SUI) in charge of VAR3 duties, Makkelie six times (PER - DEN, BEL - PAN, ARG - CRO, ESP - MAR, URU - POR and BEL - JPN). ;-)
ReplyDeleteYes, but not frequently as Orsato, Geiger, Zwayer, Valeri, ecc...
ReplyDeleteVAR: Irrati
ReplyDeleteAVAR1: Gil
AVAR2: Astroza
AVAR3: Valeri
Results of the poll:
ReplyDeleteDanny Makkelie (NED) 596
Massimiliano Irrati (ITA) 147
Mark Geiger (USA) 43
Felix Zwayer (GER) 38
Daniele Orsato (ITA) 15
Mauro Vigliano (ARG) 10
Artur Soares Dias (POR) 6
Bastian Dankert (GER) 5
Paolo Valeri (ITA) 2
No doubts that, according to our redears, Makkelie should get the final as VAR.

Someone was right... Björn Kuipers didn't get the Final only because he is from Europe... But if I'm not incorrect he is the one taking most money home from the tournament... 4 matches as main referee and 3 matches as 4th official!
DeleteWell. Geiger on another VAR appointment, and Irrati as VAR in Final with Makkelie as VAR3, Ridiculous
