    1. No, he lost his hair when he read "Roeckel" instead of "Roekel" and "bold" instead of "bald" in your message.

    2. Shocking. I didn't understand indeed the meaning of "bold".

    4. Right, that must be the reason. Anyway, of course there is some misspelling. I‘ll correct it.

Absolutely, Ignashevich didn't even watch the ball

  5. Clear penalty for Russia. Kuipers with an excellent positioning, but why he waited efore whistling?

    2. Maybe he thought it wasn’t deliberate first and then thought it was blatant. Or maybe he thought should I wait for VAR or take it right now.

      Delete
    3. Maybe he was considering handball instructions in his head. There still are the "didn't see the ball coming" and "short distance" parts to think about.
Therefore OK to take a moment in my opinion.

      Delete
    4. Replaying it in his mind to make sure that he did see what he thought he saw.

      Delete
    5. The correct decision has been made, so well done... Referees often wait to hear if their ARs have any input to make and then make the call... Like Cunha did in France v Australia!

      Delete
    6. I made this question also because I thought of a possible intervention by AR1, but definitely too far away from the incident (maybe Kuipers had totally missed it?). What do you think?

      Delete
    7. Maybe Turpin saw it? Or he just waited abit to see if there is a goal chance?

      Delete
    8. If Kuipers missed it totally, how did he instantly make the gesture?? That was only a 2 seconds delay and anyone should take that much time to make a correct call rather than make a rushed bad call...

      Delete
  6. Correct penalty and yc for preventing shot.

  8. great call, left his arm extended in hopes of a deflection.

    ReplyDelete
  9. i love the way he used body language to explain what he saw so everyone understood what was going on.

    card for DI or UB?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Definitely the correct call, but I was a little confused because it looked like he was signalling for offside for some reason, when he put his arm up to mimic the handball. Anyways, I think I'm nitpicking a little.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. As a referee I know he wasn’t meaning offside but your point is correct. When showing handball you shouldn’t raise your arm like that.

      Delete
    2. I think that helped the players in understanding what exactly had been penalised there!

      Delete
  11. Kuipers had no choice here. Pique raised his arm like a railway signal...
Good first half by Kuipers, as we know him. Perfect positioning and communication, good body language and sometimes IMO a bit too leniant conc.foul detection and discipline, but I am getting used to that...
    Well done.

    1. I don't think the 1st half needed him to be any more strict!

      Delete
    2. Apart from the penalty, expected level in my opinion.
Nothing to say about first half.

      Delete
    3. Yes pretty much easy game and teams are concentrated on playing clean football rather than dirty play!

      Delete
    4. Soham with his favourite word

      Delete
    5. It's an easy game, come on :D

      Delete
    6. A game like this isn't easy. Even at amateur level, play-off matches ask a lot of concentration from anyone. One has ho be very concentrated to keep things flowing. This game looks easy, because Kuipers does very well, but a natch from the hometeam at fhis stage can't be easy.

      Delete
    7. The match is easy... Now reasons behind that are many and of course good refereeing is one of them!

      Delete
    8. No, Soham, this match is not easy.

      Delete
    9. Kuipers has made it easy for himself!

      Delete
    10. Yes, but that's something different. As a referee observer, you can't call this easy. Here in Holland, that's not even allowed. One could call it a 'normal' match. But that sounds much more honest than the 'easy' you always use. Match isn't easy, match is normal, thanks to his good performance.

      Delete
    11. There is big difference between easy and boring

      Delete
  12. Kuipers called a similar PK at stamford bridge between Chelsea vs PSG, 2015 2nd leg, ET1.
Collina did the same thing between Chelsea vs Barcelona 2005 1st half.

Raising hands in the air is a joke and this is very clear PK.

    1. Bad memories. Chelsea v PSG was one match that went horribly wrong. Was a complete nightmare and ended his season there!

      Delete
    2. The RC at early time was controversial. The PK was not contested by PSG players. IMO, it was the early RC that ended his season.

      Delete
    3. Maybe, it was contested by Austrian oberserver Horst Brummeier?

      Delete
    4. There were some missed incidents which were crucial... The PK or RC weren't problems!

      Delete
    5. Yep, RC was the problem. Confirmed by Pol van Boekel.

      Delete
    6. Sorry I actually wanted to say missed RC wasn't the problem... There was 1 potential missed RC for either Luiz or Costa, I don't exactly remember, but probably that wasn't the problem... The Ibrahimovic RC was a problem indeed! Did van Boekel add anything else about the game?

  15. What was the reason for the drop ball in 49'?
Did he whistle although the ball had not crossed the sideline?

  16. Yellow for Kutepov definitely supportable but to soft for my taste

  17. 58' Nice to see Kuipers' very strong reaction to dissent from a Russian player.

    1. Was it offside? Seemed onside here on the replay??

      Delete
    2. Yes, for me it was quite clear.

      Delete
    3. Looked offside from the angle shown (which was poor), but close enough that they may have been waiting for the potential goal scoring chance and VAR.

      Delete
    4. Oh then I have misinterpreted... Was a poor angle shown though!

      Delete
    5. The angle was clear. You could see the grass lines and compare. About 2-3 meters offside

      Delete
    6. Clear offside. Easy to detect based on grass cutting lines

      Delete
    7. I must have missed it! 7.9 for me! :D

      Delete
    8. Remember that we've had those grass angles before, but we can't tell the vertical placement all that well, just the placement at ground level.

That's why I say that it looked offside from the angle shown... which was poor.

  26. There is possibility of 4th sub in ET, right?

    ReplyDelete
  27. 104min. Was that a foul? No contact with the ESP player.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It was a lunging challenge. Got ball, but probably should have been a caution.

      Delete
    2. Kuipers appeared to explain to the player "because you got the ball and no player, that's why you're not getting a caution"

      Delete
  28. Very important decision right now... more than crucial, a penalty could have been decisive for Spain qualification. VAR took some time, but at the end one can agree. Not a clear mistake.
Please note, very big responsibility here for the outcome of the game, directly on Makkelie. I think supportable to play on.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. There was a shirt hold, but it _appeared_ that the Russian player let go of the shirt as the kick came in.

That might have been enough for Makkelie to say "no clear error".

      Delete
    2. Plus lots of mutual holding to give a penalty... Spanish players were equally holding and pushing there...

      Delete
    3. IMO
      Ramos-mutual pulling
      Pique-not enough

      Delete
    4. I would prefer a YC for the mobbing actually...that was pretty aggressive, with the VAR signal...

And good ecision to play on IMO.

      Delete
    5. Wasn't agressive and it got calmed down very quickly!

      Delete
    6. It was very aggressive and 3 players were running at him and then they started pushing the opponent too

      Delete
    7. There was hardly any gestures and the referee managed it pretty quickly. No need to dish out a card there as Collina said in the press conference!

      Delete
  29. Pique was pulled but Ramos also pulled someone else. No clear and obvious error. Good decision not to give PK. Great cooperation Kuipers-Makkelie again

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have the same view... Mutual holding but anyway not enough for a penalty... No penalty for sure the more favourable call there!

    1. Agreed, he was excellent in that role, I hope FIFA appoints him again there.

      Delete
    2. It depends how far the French national team will get 😉

      Delete
  32. Penalty shoot-out. Now everything is possible.

    ReplyDelete
  33. For me both decisions supportable. 2xholding - but not clear enough because holding from both sides. A PK was definitely possible - bit not mandatory. Great job by the team!!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Now Kuipers i probably happy because it’s hard to make a misstake as a refree in a penalty shoot-out

    ReplyDelete
  35. Nice and transparent coin toss
(Remember Kassai with wrong toss on EURO)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Great performance by Kuipers.
I expect a quater final match and then the final.
This guy and his team are just complete package.
I'm sure FIFA assigned him for this match having in mind his way of dealing tough situations and the pressure this game generates since the host is playing.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If FIFA gives him another game, I think that will be either a SF or the Final...

      Delete
    2. I agree but QF and Final?
This is his 3rd match, I think he will be recorder with 5 matches

      Delete
    3. Irmatov had 5 matches in 2010, so it is possible.
But I also think, the next match will be one of the last 4.

      Delete
    4. Well,I believe FIFA sees the quater finals as a final test in order to decide who to asssign for the last three matches.
If Colina has the last word, then I think we all can't be surprised since he had decisions in assigning the same referee in several consecutive important mathes (last year with Cakir).

      Delete
    5. Directly in a semifinal or final. He is one of the last "three names". I don't consider third place final as important.

      Delete
    6. P.s.
Dear Soham,I appreciate your opinions but I got confused of uyou reply.
Do you doubt about Kuipers getting another match?
What do you think about his chances for the last three matches?

      Delete
    7. Hi Bob. Of course I believe he should get another match but I don't think it will be a QF and Final after this. Either directly a SF or the Final will be my prediction. DrMr explained the same thing, that's what I meant to say basically :)

    3. He was standing like 10 meters from the post, not 5,5. And I was just wondering why.
I thought it was a new expectation from the ARs but then I saw Pitana's AR was in the regular position.

    4. Maybe to have better overview on the behaviour of the keeper.

  46. Have you seen the situation at 114 min on reply? Pique was clearly hold - clear penalty for me, Kuipers should at least run to the screen. Till then solid performance, good personality, but that is situation which can sent home.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Lol no... View that situation in real time and not in super slow motion as Collina said... That minimal holding is never enough for a penalty... And Ramos situation was clearly mutual holding... So no penalty, just play on!

      Delete
    2. First, I like Kuipers style too.
Not looked at that view, don`t say that, anyway, Pique couldn`t jump(Mitrovic could do that) because he was holded, is that minimal holding?( i dont think so) Ramos situation is more interesting - Ramos is with his back to the ball, why he would hold a Russian - no reason, the Russian hold Ramos and what is Ramos doing - he tries to escape with his hands pushing the Russian(interesting - think about that) - and you call that mutual holding. I can even say 2 penalties. Really interesting situation, clear to me, but that is the weel of the History, it turned to exactly Ramos and Pique, deserved i think.

      Delete
    3. Not a penalty for me... When there is mutual holding, just play on! That's what I know to be the most favourable call in such cases!

      Delete
    4. Better to read what i wrote, it is interesting too!

  47. OT :

Makkelie appointed as VAR to Geiger in Colombia v England... This is surely a clear indication that Makkelie backing the no penalty award to Spain has been assessed as a correct decision??
