  1. I thought, Astroza is not active any more?

    1. Why would you think so?

    2. Because he is neither on the list of the remaining 10 VARs nor an AR of one of the remaining head referees.

      Delete
    3. He is only in the role as AVAR2, that is the offside specialist VAR... Mark Borsch of Germany has also stayed back for this purpose if you have noted!

  2. Well Irrati can already book his ticket to the final. The most trusted VAR at the tournament, otherwise Vigliano was the main VAR.

    1. Danny Makkelie is absolutely No 1 at this WC.

    2. Makkelie is definitely a good VAR, great calls this tournament. But I guess Irrati is ahead of him because he has more experience in his national league.

The main referee of the final should tell us a lot, if Kuipers will referee the final Makkelie will be the VAR.

    3. My guess is Var and Avars 1 and 3 for the final will be Zwayer, Makeelie and Irrati/Orsato, just not sure in what order and Avar 2 will be either Borsch or Astroza

    4. I can't see Zwayer being the main VAR in the final!

  3. Interesting:

    http://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/weltmeisterschaft/startseite/726946/artikel_dfb-will-erklaerung-fuer-abzug-von-brych.html

    It says:

DFB demands statement of the withdrawal of Brych

    1. They want a reason: snubbed VAR. That's It. Too pompous, Herr Doutor Brych.

    2. Well, it would be interesting finally to hear what happened with Brych and VAR. Can't wait...
But, French, Gambian, Polish as well as Salvador's referee organizations could ask the same - and that's rubbish. Committee certainly had very good reason.

    3. This is a wonderful blog.

I agree with Chefren's view of the referees committee ... that referees must be humble and be able to change/adapt from their "old ways" of being the "top boss on the pitch". So, under the eyes of the committee was Brych able to change/adapt and correctly use VAR? The answer is clearly no.

Kuipers was humble enough to use VAR in BRA-CRC.

Faghani is an interesting case. I believe in FRA-ARG, Faghani did not use VAR and perhaps this is an important consideration that has been overlooked by many here. I searched other sites and hkref.blogspot.com has discussed this.

    4. Hi DVA... Faghani not using VAR is something new to me... Can you please enlighten us in which situation exactly did Faghani decline to use VAR??

The author says there was no VAR contact in the penalty situation and that Brych ignored VAR-help is false information. There was no such help.

    6. Again, like for Marciniak's interview, if this is the truth, there is something we can't understand. So, why Zwayer was appointed again while Brych had to leave the tournament? Nosense. Only reason can be: because Serbian federation wanted that. But I can't believe such thing.

    7. Chefren, I think that Bussacca and Collina must
go at home for walk the dog daily.

      Delete
    8. @Chefren: I don't think Serbian federation complaint had any influence on Brych sending home. Brasilian federation also sent a letter of complaint but Ramos whostled in Round of 16. It would make more logic that Ramos would be send home (expecialy due to fact that Brasil has a representative in refs committee).

    9. @DVA

If you suggest that Faghani should have used VAR for the whistled penalty, then he was correct in not doing so. His decision was spot-on.

Kuipers was forced to use VAR since he made a clear mistake. That's the difference.

  4. Danilo Grujic said he was very impressed with Faghani. He watched SRB - BRA live and said he was thrilled with his management, positioning..

  5. Soham you have seen other 4th officials and what do you think about faghani's future,,can he handle another match or game over.

    1. I can go either way to be honest but I would hope that he gets at least a Semi-final match!

  6. For me Makkelie is the best VAR. He made the most important calls. During the FIFA press conference his moments were shown. His communication is calm and confident. If Irrati does the final it's more because he's Italian.. like Rosetti and Collina.

    1. The VAR appointments are done mainly in consultation with Mr. Rosetti! :D

  7. bla...bla..bla! Irrati was and is the best VAR ref in this tournament.

    1. I really like your reasoning! Just like ProRef I was of the opinion that Makkelie made the best impression as VAR, but reading your arguments it’s impossible for me to disagree with you :D

    2. Nice joke, will all mistakes he cannot be the best ;)

  9. https://www.bild.de/bild-plus/sport/fussball/fifa-wm-2018/brych-stinksauer-auf-seinen-deutschen-video-schiri-56238250.bild.html

There is another article that reports that there was no message from Zwayer.

    Some quotes:
    - Brych is mad at his german video-referee Felix Zwayer.
    - In his only World Cup match, Brych missed a clear penalty for Serbia against Switzerland. Afterwards, someone in the inner circle of FIFA scattered the information, video referee Zwayer had told Brych to look at the scene himself - but he had ignored the radio message.
BILD knows: There was definitely no message from Zwayer - he left Brych!
    - Since then there is also off the field no communication between Brych and Zwayer.
    - Neither Zwayer nor Pierluigi Collina want to comment, can only say: "We do not participate in speculation and we basically do not want to comment on that."
    - Former Bundesliga referee Thorsten Kinhöfer (active until 2015): "The bad leadership at FIFA is a scandal and embarrassing."

    1. FIFA absolutely HAS to preselect quintets for the next WC of:
      REF-AR1-AR2-VAR-AVAR2

"Stand as a team, fall as a team", it would prevent situations like this where it is two referees 'competing'. Zwayer isn't so popular in DFB it seems.

I can't imagine Turpin and Marciniak are the best of friends either at the moment...

Thank you for translating this article! (Bild is Germany's answer to The Sun in England?)

    2. Yes it is. But the informations are very safe in most cases though they made in a populistic style

  10. OT: Chinese Football Federation offered Cuneyt Cakir, 5 years contract total 5 m usd. He will officiate games as well as train the referees.
He didn't accept it yet but he is thinking.

    1. I also heard that Cakir is quite much considering the move... Actually he has nothing left to achieve in his career... I won't be too astonished if he actually accepts it!

    2. He deserves this kind of financial reward

    3. It's fair enough to secure one's future... For sure there will come a time when family's security becomes a top priority rather than whistling yet another Real Madrid or Barcelona match!

  11. Just guessing..but interesting to think about in case of a good performance today by Ricci, he could be also a great candidate for the final as Brasil is out of the competition.
I would say today is finally a test for him to convince people about his abilities as to be honest he hasn't been really tested in his two games. (especially the second would been easily refereed by anybody)
I am looking forward to see him in such an important game and I hope he will show a great performance.
I know it will depend also a lot on the results of the semifinals, but it's very rare that Brasil is not in the last four teams, and for a long time we haven't had such a reliable Brasilian official, like Ricci, so anything can happen. :)

    2. I agree, Sandro Ricci is one of my favourite referees since WC 2014. Good luck to him, he is relevant candidate for the final.

  12. Final for Faghani, Çakir, Kuipers, Mazic, Skomina or Pitana. I think.
