  2. Very important game given to Zwayer, obviously they trust him a lot and like his lenient style.

IMO, after 2 unconvincing performances in CL MD5 and MD6 and an average performance in Greece in February, I would say he is more suitable for EL knockout this season.

  5. I’m guessing Damir Skomina will take charge of the Barcelona-Napoli game on Saturday. All the big elite names will take charge of the other games in both EL and CL which leaves Skomina for this big undecided game. I’m not sure who will be appointed for the Bayern-Chelsea game though.

    1. I think Del Cerro or Kulbakov could get Bayern-Chelsea but for Barcelona to many options: Cakir, Skomina, Turpin, I wouldn't even exclude Oliver there.

      Delete
    2. My prediction: Skomina in Barcelona and Karasev in Munich

      Delete
    3. Yeah I forgot about Cakir and Turpin. If I remember correctly Cakir was confirmed for the final tournament in Portugal which means that he maybe will not be appointed for this crucial game in Spain. It could be Turpin but he was referring Barcelona-Dortmund in the group stage. I’m still guessing Skomina who went missing for a long time before the COVID-19. We’ll see tomorrow.

Milorad Mažić retired from professional career as a referee.

What would you say is the most remarkable appearance he made? One of the finals or some other game?

He was in the media quite a lot for the last 2-3 years, so here are few fun facts:

    - EL 2010 Brugge-Villareal, there was a foul and none of the referees knew who commited it so Mazic looked at players faces and (correctly) gave a YC to a player who was looking down and looked guilty

-he said that he often discussed his games with Cakir, and that Cakir often called him to ask for his opinion as well

-he was allegedly the main candidate for WC2018 final, but as Croatia won over England, there was the opinion that it is better to avoid such appointment

-in international games he and his team always used the same perfume, which he explains as a way of showing authority and team spirit within the referee team, starting from the tunnel

-he is highly educated, owning pHd degree in Agronomy

FEEL FREE TO ADD ANYTHING! (even critics :))

  12. In UEFA RAP 2020:1, A10 (IRLSUI, Del Cerro Grande) has not been assessed as a clear Serious Foul Play - it's been evaluated as a "7" or CLEARLY RECKLESS.

  13. Penalty to Lyon by Zwayer. It looked like an intervention on the ball, but then defender touched also opponent. Tricky case for VAR, but I assume they will confirm it because not clear and evident mistake...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. On TV they assumed a possible foul from the back, waiting for further replays. IMO harsh to punish the tackle, because it looked first like a clean intervention for the ball.

      Delete
    2. Now, few minutes later, in German TV they speak of an 'excellent eye by VAR Christian Dingert'. It seems that there was another incident we must focus on.

      Delete
    3. Does anyone feel this is not a foul? If no penalty was called, do you think VAR would have overturned the decision?

      Delete
    4. Indeed it seems as the contact punished by Zwayer was the previous one by Bernardeschi, but I'm really in trouble to spot it. I think VAR didn't have the opposite evidence, so they confirmed the call. In all cases, in my opinion a very soft call if not fully wrong by Zwayer, if he had rewatched the situation he would have annulled penalty decision, but of course once whistled we must discuss on VAR protocol.

      Delete
    5. Unfortunately no further replays were shown. The reporter says that they checked the incident once again and there was made a contact. They say you could not detect it from the angle behind the goal but from another angle. Let's hope for some more replays.

      Delete
    6. If the Bernardeschi (minimal) contact was punished, then the foul in the lead-up to the penalty should also have been whistled.
Very disputable decision with enormous consequences for the remainder of the match with Juventus for the task of scoring 3 goals now.

      Delete
    7. I agree, one could ask himself the question about the earlier situation with Higuain.

      Delete
  14. Now correct free kick to Juvenjtus and YC by Zwayer at the edge of penalty area, but he looked to be quite annoyed when players from Lyon protested. In my opinion, he didn't show an appropriate body language in that situation, I perceived as he was bored to do what he was doing.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Now in my opinion wrong penalty to Juventus, I think that it wasn't a punishable handball, but VAR didn't intervene as well.

  17. Penalty for Juventus (handball) given by Zwayer

  18. Zwayer not having a good game at all. 2 incorrect penalties and too many YC.

  19. Challenging game for Zwayer and at least two difficult penalty decisions that were not clear at first view. While German media changed their opinion from wrong to an excellent decision at the first incident, they are not sure about the second call. It seemed like there was an active movement towards the ball. In that case, it would be a good call.
I'm not the biggest fan of Zwayer, however, to me it seems like a very good performance. If UEFA backs both decision, I'm sure they are convinced by the first half.

  22. This is exactly what we dont want in such important game, soft penalties in situations where we have to analyze slow-motion 10 times to asess and in the end speak about "supportable", VAR protocol and such things.

Apart from that, no gestures to explain his decisions leaves everyone confused, he could have be more clear about why he made the decision.

    ReplyDelete
  23. After that minimal contact with Bernardeschi the player of Lyon made another 2-3 steps. How is possible for Zwayer to see such a minimal contact if even for us, with so many re-plays, is difficult ? For me VAR should intervene in that case. Like someone said, if that contact is punishable, than prior it is foul on Higuain ! On the other hand, the penalty for Juventus was hilarious, the clear case of compensation.

How many times I wrote here that Zwayer doesn't have the required level to whistle at this level. Keep in mind his performance last year in Atletico- Juventus 2-0, when VAR overturned hom 2 times !!!

  26. I have just seen Zwayer's penalties. Firts one is supportable but the second one is clear mistake IMO. I think VAR had to intervene in the second situation. We dont know but maybe Dingert did intervene but Zwayer stood by his initial decission, he was very confident when he whistled that penalty.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agreed. First penalty is even an excellent call in my view.

Zwayer had a perception mistake for the second penalty (the same one as Ref_1707, if I may say so) - it seemed as though the defender moved his arm towards the ball, when actually the force of the ball was what moved his arm towards the ball.

Shit can happen, but Dingert HAD to intervene there. Poor.

      Delete
    2. To be honest, based on previous matches and expecialy after that mistake in Shakhtar-Atalanta in Champions League group stage I did not expect to see Zwayer in any important match, maybe something like Man.UTD-LASK where the result feom the first match was 5-1. But undecided match in Champions League was a bit of a shock. Why not Del Cerro or one of the big names used in Europa League - Kuipers, Makkelie, Marciniak, Lahoz??

      Delete
    3. Of course you may say so, Mikael. Still after having watched a lot of replays, I find it more convincing to evaluate the arm's movement as intentional and not as a result of the ball's force.
Let me add that I find it ... interesting ... that some users (indeed not you, Mikael) tend to go the 'conspiracy way'. Of course, if you evaluate both decisions as wrong, the performance has to be assessed as bad. But I would really invite everyone to do it fairly, to exchange arguments and not conspiracy theories.

  27. Shocked about Felix Zwayer in Torino.

Missed YCs for Lyon in 16'/40'.
Wrong YC for Cuadrado in 31'.

    Correct YCs in 19'/38'/42'/44'.

Both penalties are fully wrong IMO.
Penalty for Juve a clear tackle on the ball and a previous "contact" by Bernadeschi can not be detected IMO.Christian Dingert as VAR with another very controversial decision...

Second penalty also very controversial. For me this should NOT be punishable.

No body language,no empathy and only shouting to players "Go away".
He is directly annoyed when three Lyon players coming and talking to him.Very arrogant and without sympathy! NOT a referee for big matches and I think he showed us that also in previous games!
After poor matches in UCL Group stage I am a bit disappointed about UEFA to appoint this referee again.

    1. I disagree on the first penalty but totally agree about Zwayer.

Time after time after time - and UEFA still appoint him on a high level.

    2. I agree with the most.
If one wants to give him credit, one can say that those were brave calls. But still, I dont like his style and am not sure about both PK situations.

      Delete
    3. Like Mikael, I disagree on the first penalty but agree on Zwayer.

There is contact from behind there. It's a clip. If the second tackle doesn't occur, no one says much (other than maybe labeling it "soft"). Arguing for VAR intervention shows a misunderstanding of what a clear error is in the VOR.

But Zwayer? Yeah, he's not elite. I don't get it. Germany needs to sort things out and figure out who is next. Because Zwayer is not the answer.

      Delete
  28. 2 incorrect penalty imo. Harsh but Zwayer had not the level that is needed for thuis kind of matches

    4. Simulation?! The things that get thrown around on here sometimes...

Anyway, I think it's an acceptable decision either way. Not a clear penalty, so play on acceptable. But there is a lot of contact so no way you can justify simulation. VAR would back penalty or no penalty.

      Delete
    5. No penalty at all for me. However, there is a contact, so no simulation.

      Delete
    6. Well I have seen replay only once.

Now after I have seen it, definitely not a simulation but also not a penalty for me, there is a slight contact but not enough for a penalty.

However, The 1st penalty is completely correct IMO.
The 2nd one is very hard but it is supportable that VAR didn't intervene here IMO.
His way of talking to the players never changed throughout the last seasons, but he still gets great appointments in Bundesliga and UEFA competitions.
I have the feeling that this aggressive "Get away!" and many YC for reclamations can be seen especially in Bundesliga (accept some like Aytekin,...) - more than in other leagues and I have the feeling that it is even supported by DFB.
    Discussable performance.

    1. I agree with the first penalty assessment. The second penalty seems to me like a perception error as the ball made the arm move - should have gone to an OFR.

The more concerning aspect of the performance is his terrible soft skills, to the point where players respond very poorly and broadcasters criticise his body language (SuperSport).

      Delete
  42. I'm rewatching the first penalty call and it seems to be that Zwayer clearly whistles only after the tackle (on the ball) by defender, so we can't be absolutely sure that he spotted Bernardeschi previous contact, but, most important, in case of this contact by Bernardeschi was only spotted by VAR, the latter should have asked Zwayer which foul he had whistled. In case of Zwayer had missed first situation, he had to rewatch it. I'm definitely not convinced that Zwayer spotted the previous possible foul by Bernanderschi, I think he whistled the tackle. Take a look at the video in the original live sequence.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. For me, it is not clear from the pictures, which foul was whistled by Zwayer. Could also be, that he just waited for advantage after the first foul.
But if he didn't see the first foul, I would also have expected an OFR - so no OFR somehow confirms, that he recognized the first foul.

  45. Well I maybe one of very few fans of refereeing for whom Aytekin's performance in the rematch of Barcelona-PSG wasn't as bad as many were suggesting... And that game ONLY killed his chances due to the influence of some sheiks owning as PSG...
But anyhow... Zwayer should be out, concerning his really bad soft skills. When not some decisions are the problem with a referee, but the fact that he disrespect the players and shows that to them very clearly, then he should be out of any consideration for more "big" games. There are more great talents like Siebert coming up... So no reason to worry about German refereeing at all.

    1. The problem is that Zwayer is the only German referee pre-selected for WC 2022... why Brych cannot be allowed there, same as Orsato (I think both will be 47 in 2022)?
