  1. Good appointment for Kuipers. Maybe Orsato to Bayern - Lyon? What do you think?

    2. I dare more, for me Rosetti will send Cerro Grande.

    3. Cuynet Cakir a big candidate for Bayern vs Lyon game , I thought . I always thought he would get one of the semis , irrespective of the semis contestants.

    4. To the final? With so little experience? After 2 OFR on his last match? I don't really think so. I don't understand where this "Del Cerro" campaign comes from. He's a great referee, yes, but has not really performed that well in Europe this season. Besides, being preselected for WC 2022 means he will have the chance further down the road. Don't push things too hard or they may break.

    5. No, not in final. Final is of Mateu. I'd like to see Carlob in bayern-Lyon

    6. Bayern Lyon : Lahoz
FINAL: If PSG will not make to the final for sure it will be Taylor otherwise Orsato

  3. Was probably destined for Bayern-city then was diverted to the more complicated SF.

  4. Excuse me, gentelmans. Do not be angry on me, but I would like to ask you what everybody of you see in Mateu. He is solid ref, nothing more than that. Is there any other choice for final, exclude Mateu. I think that there are referees with so much better performances in this season. So, if sevilla is out, I would give him El final. But, Makellie for me is much more deserved Cl final than Mateu. Definitely.

    1. It is too early for Makkelie... There is a unique opportunity to see a Spanish referee in UCL final. Mateu is an experience referee at UEFA level who IMO deserves that final.

      Delete
  5. Mateu is today a referee that the UEFA refereeing officials like. Dialogue and lets play as few do. Also, this year is one of the few in which there are no Spanish teams in the final, so Mateu has everything in favor to be chosen

    3. I would like to know, why you think so. IMO he is a good and experienced referee, who deserves a final and this year everything seems to be prepared, as no spanish team is in anymore, which is quite unlikely.

      My predictions:
      Bayern - Lyon: Orsato
      UCL Final: Lahoz
      UEL Final: Makkelie or Turpin

    1. That could mean Rosetti will PROBABLY observe Lyon-Bayern which would exclude Orsato. Maybe realy Cakir will be appointed for second semi final.

    2. If Rosetti observer in the other semifinal, I would say Taylor big candidate.

  9. IMO, sensible choice to appoint Kuipers to this match, we all know how difficult it has been in the past to referee matches involving PSG, and now having reached the semifinal, committee was absolutely right to assign this game to one of the most experienced (and best!) refereeing teams.

For Bayern-Lyon - assuming that Rosetti will observe the game (which should put Orsato out) - I think it will be Çakir (also keeping in mind that he was confirmed for Lisbon and is yet to handle a game there).

Just for the record, I did a bit of research:
    2009: England - Sweden (U-21 Euro semifinal)
2010: Fulham - Hamburg (Europa League semifinal)
2011: France - Colombia (U-20 World Cup semifinal)
2012: Barcelona - Chelsea (Champions League semifinal)
2012: Portugal - Spain (Euro semifinal)
2014: Benfica - Juventus (Europa League semifinal)
2014: Argentina - Netherlands (World Cup semifinal)
2016: ManCity - Real (Champions League semifinal)
2016: Bayern - Atlético (Champions League semifinal)
2017: Atlético - Real (Champions League semifinal)
2018: Real - Bayern (Champions League semifinal)
2018: Croatia - England (World Cup semifinal)
2019: Liverpool - Barcelona (Champions League semifinal)

Unless I forgot something, Cüneyt Çakir has handled an impressive THIRTEEN (!) international semifinals in his career.

    2. It will be Mateu Lahoz for Bayern-OL SF according to Spanish journalist Ramón Fuentes (who IMO always has good sources)

      https://www.sport.es/es/noticias/champions/mateu-lahoz-pitara-olympique-lyon-bayern-munich-8077656

      Delete
    3. Well if we see Mateu for Bayern-OL then who in final? Orsato?

      Delete
    4. If true, then Orsato only option for CL final.
Would also make sense the fact that he didn't get any CL so far in Portugal, strange to think that he could stay only with two EL games. In this case, I would also add, absolutely unexpected and extra-ordinary for me. It seems that committee doesn't consider Mateu as so good for a single final, we could also draw this conclusion, let's wait and see.

      Delete
    5. It will be really strange if Orsato would have a better opinion than Mateu to be a referee in CL final..

      Delete
    6. Maybe Taylor for the CL final because of exit Man City. Also a possible explanation for delay in release of appointment today.

      Delete
    7. Taylor had no appointement in CL KO before this Season...

      Delete
  10. I also think that Del Cerro will handle Lyon-Bayern but due to huge statistic I can't esclude Cakir. No room for Orsato for me.
Lahoz (Makkelie 4th) and Turpin (Taylor or Orsato 4th except final will be Inter -M.utd)

    ReplyDelete
  11. Or Makkelie for EL final assisted by Turpin with a full spanish squad for UCL final. Del Cerro 4th of Mateu

    ReplyDelete
  12. It seems as Kuipers was planned for the potential Bayern-Man City, but then he was moved to Leipzig-PSG because it would have been impossible to have two Dutch referees in a row for the same team (Lyon).
If Mateu has the other semi-final, the two candidates for the UCL final are Orsato and Taylor.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Taylor was horrible in the FA Cup final, i dont think he will be trusted with another final.

      Delete
    2. You all mention this FA Cup final, but why Taylor should repeat again a bad performance in another final? That's not clear. Too much obsessed. He did very well recently in UEFA games.

      Delete
    3. The logic fails here. If it was impossible to have two Dutch referees for Lyon, then it was also impossible to have two Dutch referees for Man City.

      Delete
    4. The logic for the delay/changes could be: exit Man City > final for Taylor.

      Delete
    5. @usaref: do not forget the discussions about Lyon and Dutch referees that came up AFTER Makkelie's appointments was already made and probably Kuipers was penciled in. However, you might have better sources since you posted first that Marciniak got the second EL semi-final. Maybe you know the final appointments as well?

      Delete
    6. To be honest, while Taylor is a good referee, I think people are overrating him a bit based on strong recent international performances. As others have mentioned, we must remember this was his first year with a CL knockout stage game. In my opinion, it's still too early for him to handle the final.

  14. Actually I hope Turpin or Marcinak will officiate UCL final, but if France team advances to final, Turpin cannot officiate it. Actually I hope Turpin officiate UCL final if both of UCL finalists are French(derby France) but despite French team compete with another French team in International finals, he cannot officiate UCL final.

  18. Excellent decision by Kuipers with this handball, however, for opportunity reasons, I think he could have whistled a bit later, as if I'm not wrong, the ball was entering the net when he whistled, but he was 100% sure and he was right.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Very good call. He is alert.

      Delete
    2. I am actually very happy he whistled instantly because he was sure in his decision and he showed he is not referee who will not make a decision and them wait for VAR to correct him.

      Delete
    3. We've seen a lot of examples where referees were 100% about the handball but were wrong in the end. It's not about waiting for VAR to correct. It's about giving VAR the possibility to correct.

      Delete
  19. Kuipers whistled just before the ball went in.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Correct free-kick leading to 0-1 for PSG. Also, good no offside decision as Neymar (?) did not fight for the ball and did not affect any defender.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I guess this warning in 34' was the last one. I think next more serious foul will be YC.

    ReplyDelete
  22. 45'+3' first YC of the game, SPA for Kimpembe. Good decision.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes and Kuipers showed Kimpebe with his hand that YC is due to SPA, correct decision I agree. Nothing special to comment in the first half....

      Delete
  23. Strong first half by Kuipers. Alert, in control of the match and good communication skills. Only minor incident is that he was hit by the ball near penalty area.
Now, free-kick in 45+2' and YC for SPA is rather doubtful. But again, excellent match control and player management.

    ReplyDelete
  24. How is that YC not DOGSO at end of the half? Leipzig player would have been past PSG defender in on goal is not for foul.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. But Olmo did not have a ball under control if I am not wrong so it can not be DOGSO. Or I saw something different?

      Delete
    2. Can't remember so would have to see replay.

      Delete
    3. I rewatched it, I think is a borderline situation so Van Boekel did not call Kuipers for OFR.

      Delete
    4. Yes, one would have to be sure to make such an important call.

      Delete
    5. Agree, but definitely not a clear situation IMO, but as you said, it must be 100% clear situation to make such call in Champions league semi finals.

      Delete
    6. Maybe the wisest decision would have been "no foul". It would have been supportable, would have avoided the first YC to the fairer team and the discussion on SPA vs DOGSO.

      Delete
  25. Does Kuipers have a very high line for YCs, meaning that he allows for more physical play than other elite referees?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Also, the one thing I've learned this past week from seeing Cakir have a bit of an off night and Brych miss at least one obvious YC is that elite referees don't always have perfect games. I always saw so many great games from them that I thought they could do no wrong, but everyone is human, which makes me feel better about my own refereeing--haha.

    1. Absolutely not. Clear foul.

  30. Kuipers with a very, very convoncing performance. Important decisions are all correct abd communication with players is good as well. And both AR with sensational onside-decisions!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I realy don't understand why Leipzig's player called for foul there before third goal, expecialy when you know VAR is used in the match...

    ReplyDelete
  32. Someone shouted in German: "Man, you pussy. Bugger me!" Well, I don't know where this came from, but at least no nice words are exchanged on the pitch... 0–3 for PSG makes RBL angry.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Are you all so sure there was no foul there? On my broadcast they showed a great, low, close-up angle from the opposite touchline which (in my opinion) clearly showed the Leipzig player getting clipped.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's a very clear foul. He trips his foot. It's a scandal by VAR.

      Delete
    2. Yes, I saw that. Still, not every contact is a foul. The defender aimed to get a free-kick in a tactical term. For me goal is valid.

      Delete
    3. I agree, but it was very light. And also the RBL player did fall a few steps later. So felt a touch and realises one second later it's better to fall. Also felt the touch in a position where the referee most of time stands on de side of the defending side. But Kuipers didn't fall for it and I personally think it's a great call.

      Delete
    4. Here is this situation: https://streamable.com/38osku

      Delete
    5. Yes, that angle exactly! For me, this is a clear foul. The clip causes the Leipzig player's left foot to land at a very off-balance angle, which causes him to fall. Unfortunately I think this is a big mistake by Kuipers.

      Delete
    6. This contact is that light that according to me, a no-foul call is never a mistake.

      Delete
    7. A trip is a trip. He is running, he gets tripped, it's a foul. It clearly effect his way of running.

      Delete
    8. Foul for me, but not clear and obvious. And judging by the way, how Kuipers communicated, I assume, he saw it well - therefore it's also no missed incident.

      Delete
    9. In my opinion foul can be whistled, but not VAR stuff, never a clear mistake, it would have been wrong to see a VAR intervention here.

      Delete
    10. Sorry but I am not convinced that is a foul. This is similar to Marciniak's situation in Leipzig-Atletico. And obviously Rosetti agreea that it was not a foul since Marciniak was appointed for EL semi finals.

      Delete
    11. I don't think Rosetti punishes referees if he thinks they missed 1 foul anyway.

      Delete
    12. Yes, and similar to the situation in Makkelie's game.

      Delete
    13. Yes but if that 1 foul is crucial mistake (missed penalty) I think referee could be punished.

      Delete
  34. Correct free kick minute 78 but a card is not necessary. He got the ball first so it changed direction and then the leg in a careless way. Neither reckless or a promising attack.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm ok with that yellow, definitely a foul because the defender trips him with his other leg after winning the ball with the first leg. And I'm ok with the YC too because I think the promising attack exists even after the defender deflects the ball.

      Delete
    2. Not a clear foul for me (but supportable). But once the foul is given, I agree that it is SPA.

      Delete
  35. I think good performance by Kuipers.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Björn Kuipers, superb referee. Great performance. It's a pleasure to see him

    ReplyDelete
  37. If, as I think, Bayern will go to the final it will be an extremely balanced and fought final as no match has been in this tournament in Portugal. Kuipers used all his experience and skill

    ReplyDelete
  38. Congratulations to UEFA officials, if I'm not wrong (hopefully I'm not missing incidents) half of Europa League quarterfinals (Oliver and Orsato games), all CL quarterfinals, all EL semifinal and one CL semifinal were handled without any single VAR intervention to correct a decision. Even more important, no VAR for "normal" fouls, the interventions for offside are for sure more possible, as sometimes we have very borderline situations.
In this context, we could add that making a mistake is something that can cost you for the future. I don't know but maybe what AR1 missed in Turpin's game, on last 10 August, was something considered by committee. Indeed VAR has not intervened in other games since that day: Manchester United - Copenhagen and Inter - Bayer Leverkusen.
Let's hope that this trend will continue for tomorrow and for the finals.

    ReplyDelete
  39. There are several things that can be concluded based on the appointments we have seen and we will see.
Cakir: If he is not appointed for CL final that means Committee was not satisfied with his performance in Barcelona-Napoli and they decided it is better not to appoint him amymore this season. Unfortunately for him that means that just like after the suspension, he will need to convince Committee that he is in a good form at the beginning of the new season and I would not count on him for any of the top clashes in the first two or three matchdays.
Marciniak: Situation from Leipzig-Atletico where he did not call the penalty for tripping by goalkeeper was obviously was assessed as correct one. Otherwise he would not be appointed for EL semi finals neither would Gil be appointed as AVAR in EL final.
Makkelie and Turpin: Makkelie in City-Lyon and Turpin in Inter-Leverkusen both had similar situations – push by hand(s) in penalty area. Turpin whistles a penalty, Makkelie (and I think intensity was even higher than in Turpin's match) did not whistle a penalty. As we all can see, Makkelie is appointed for the EL final over Turpin who is much experienced than Makkelie.
Those penalty situations from Marciniak/Turpin/Makkelie matches and later appointments made by Committee suggest that Committee is not happy with „soft penalties“ and they would rather appoint referees who will not call „soft penalties“ ( I hate expression „soft penalty“ but I don't have any other).
Let's see how Lahoz will perform today, I wish him good luck :)

  41. Italian serie B second leg play off final
    Spezia-Frosinone
Juan Luca Sacchi / Niccolo’ Pagliardini / Oreste Muto / Marco Serra
VAR: Gianluca Aureliano / Davide Ghersini

Referee and ARs promoted to top level

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It is quite sure that from next season serie A and B panels will be joined into a single committee, serie A and B referees, as it was until 2010. This has been made to have more flexibility in appointments, with the main reason that, after controversial performance in serie A, serie A referees would have had to stay out without the chance to officiate in serie B to gain again the form. Also, useful for adding with more graduality all young serie B referees in serie A, without mandatory rules.
So the promotions from serie B to serie A this season are about to lose their real value and meaning, given that all referees will be indeed stay in a single panel.
If you ask me, there are both positive and negative arguments for every aspects, for sure the problem in finding new talents is not exclusively because serie B was until today separated from serie A. However, in Italy unluckily we have too much focus on referees, so after a poor performance it is quite mandatory to spend some time out and so it is very helpful to be assigned at least in serie B (this was not possible in the last 10 years). Also, the difficulty by serie B committee to find new names to be promoted, with Giua they realized that after 2 years of serie B, it was too early to promote him, indeed his first season as serie A referee this season has been extremely poor.
