    1. Atkinson with his typical "soft approach"

    2. All three are red cards.

      Delete
    3. Why on earth is the third a red card? It looks ugly at first glance, but when you see the replay, it's just awkward and clumsy. The point of contact is low.

I also think you have no real feel of English referees if you think the first one would have been a red card in this match from any other English referee. The low point of contact and the appearance that the fouling player tries to mitigate the seriousness of the foul would be enough for ANY English referee to go yellow card in the EFL Championship Playoff Final. Your criticism is with England, if you have one, not with Atkinson (though I would suggest that wouldn't be a red card anymore at the World Cup or in UEFA competitions, either).

The second is the worst of the lot. But even there it's hard to discern point of contact. It's a plausible red card, but without further evidence I'm not convinced it's 100% SFP.

      Delete
    4. I'm not an Atkinson fan but he got all of those calls right. None are red cards.

The first one is orange perhaps, but in the first half of a Championship playoff final, I sure wouldn't want to be sending someone off for that. We can analyze the technical 'correct' decision all day long, but you have to have a feel for the game too. The first one was manageable under the right circumstances with a yellow.

The second and especially third one are never SFP for me. The third one is little more than a clumsy collision.

    5. I mostly agree with usaref here.
      1) For me 60:40 towards RC, because of the intensity and danger. However, the tackling is aimed towards the ball (there even is a slight touch), the leg ist not completely straight and the contact ends on the foot after being higher at the first contact.
      2) Quite difficult to detect the point of contact, but when stopping the replay, one can see it is above the ankle. I am not sure, whether he gets the ball first. If not, I would evaluate it as clear mistake. Otherwise, the YC is only just acceptable for me.
      3) I don't see much of a SFP here. More an unlucky, or as usaref said "clumsy" crash.

  4. Interesting, that a 2nd group referee is enough as 4th official in Barcelona. Özkahya or even e.g. Soares Dias would have been alternatives.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Indeed, something is not clear under this aspect regarding fourth officials. The choice is not made on the importance of the game, otherwise we would have had a different name in Barcelona, but in Turin Sidiropoulos was appointed...

Your opinion about this penalty call after OFR with VAR in Deportivo La Coruna - Fuenlabrada, very decisive for the game but also for the standing (minute 95')?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No penalty for me. Defender even tries to take the arm away, the touch is purely accidental. Reminds me a bit of the penalty that Soares Dias awarded in GER-NED last year.

      Delete
    2. In my opinion correct decision, the player had so much time to remove his arm, and it wasnt unexpected movement, so at least supportable call.

Do you know if it was clear mistake or missed incident VAR intervention?

      Delete
    3. I watched this game. Isidro Díaz de Mera Escuderos (1989, candidate for promotion) had this incident in injury time after a quiet night.

Unlike in the case of De Ligt's handball in GER-NED, I find this handball PK decision correct. De Ligt didn't even know where the ball was, FUE23 knew exactly where the ball is, tries to control it with the chest but fails and controls it with the arm. Stupid but IMO correct penalty.

@Forlan Idk what you mean, referee and almost all players except DEP10 (bottom left, with an excellent view who is the only one to ask for handball) missed it.

Poor Díaz de Mera Escuderos, the last time I watched him in a decisive game (Zaragoza-Huesca, Aragonese derby 2nd vs 3rd for promotion) he had a good performance but another controversial and decisive incident in minute 94'. XD

  9. Correct penalty to Bayern and YC for Chelsea by Hategan. AR2 decided before offside and VAR confirmed onside.

  14. Pushing is mostly at referee's discretion, who knows how VAR works, is also aware of that. I agree that it was a foul and maybe Cakir totally missed it, but VAR can't intervene there. We must blame protocol, if we want to change.

I know what you want to say. If referee see a contact and in his opinion is not foul that VAR can not intervene. Tehnically VAR can intervene when referee completely missed the foul.

But honestly, this is a clear and obvious mistake. Perception of Cakir was clearly wrong.

Anyway, it's already 3-0, no one will talk aanymore about that ...

  16. Now very long check after 3-0 by Barcelona, to be checked a possible handball by Messi before the goal, and before that, a possible handball in Barça's penalty area, about this latter incident no replay was shown. In these early minutes VAR with big work, Cakir looks to be not so brilliant.

    1. No you“re wrong this time. In case of a handball if“s a factual decision which has never been shown to the referee himself!

      Delete
    2. Completely normal for a factual decision like handball before a goal.

      Delete
    3. Whether it hit the hand is now considered factual so no OFR needed.

      Delete
    4. Handball before goal/GSO is considered factual decision as all handballs are punishable.

      Delete
  18. I must say that annulling this goal by Messi but then allowing the previous one for 1-0 shows exactly how VAR works (especially with the last law changes about handballs) but raises many questions about the real use of this tool. A clear foul can't be detected, an almost inexistent handball is spotted.

    ReplyDelete
  19. To be honest, very poor first half by Cakir. Now a big penalty for Barça missed. VAR should intervene there.

  23. Seems like a gap in the rules to me, like a foul not being able to occur if the ball is out of bounds. A player should be able to try to kick the ball in a normal manner without being charged for a foul if another player gets in between the kicking and the ball.

    4. Of course Zwayer and also Cakir gave us material to criticise them. Indeed one can discuss bad decisions/performances but discussing also means explaining and giving arguments instead of making one sarcastic comment after another.
And for me VAR doesn‘t take the Human element out. There will always be errors where humans are used...

      Delete
    5. "VAR was supposed to alleviate the "but he's human" element."
That's wrong IMO. VAR is supposed to reduce clear errors (which it did today), but won't remove all mistakes or even the human aspects of refereeing.

      Delete
    6. Thank you Philipp, completely agreed!

      Delete
    7. Surely they are human and they can have a bad night. But so many wrong decisions in two crucial games seem to show that maybe they were not the right names for such important matches. Also, in my opinion, if you don't focus in a single decision but you see their way of refeering you can easily see how they far from the best are. And VAR (not) decisions make things even worst...

      Delete
    8. Yes, of course. I was suprised to see Zwayer for this game and he didn‘t do well (as „expected“). With Cakir it is a bit different. Usually he is the one for difficult games, unfortunately not today especially in terms of evaluating key incidents correctly.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. For me right, as the contact was accidentally and therefore only careless

      Delete
    2. Hm, but the intensity was quite high, which would support reckless. Also DOGSO has to be considered.

Anyway, without the YC, Messi should have left the field for or after his treatment (because he didn't take the penalty).

      Delete
    3. The question is, was there a chance for the defender to foresee the danger for Messi? Imo clearly not, he just wanted to play the ball without the possibility of knowledge, so there's imo no reason to consider the intensity.

      Delete
    4. Classic accidental kick situation where the sanction is at the referee's discretion - considering the high force of the kick notwithstanding it's position on the pitch, yellow card is the best solution there.

      Delete
    5. In favour of common sense, correct. In favour of the book of law I would, at least if you go exactly with the written text, a YC is only possible with an contingent intend = recklessness. But it's of course possible to suspect an intend.

    1. No, I‘m with you. No VAR stuff but for mee (too) soft penalty based on the few replays I‘ve seen

      Delete
    2. Me too. For me not too soft, but rather wrong. Incredibly bad evening for Cakir, he was going from bad to worst. Missed clear foul prior first goal, I didn’t see handball from Messi, but maybe I am wrong. Missed absolutely clear penalty and he was few meters away, had perfect angle and he had even to hear the foul. Unbelievable. And finally this penalty for Napoli for nothing after missing almost leg breaking foul. One of the worst performances in one half at this level. And VAR - it’s a joke. This kind of VAR has no sense.

      Delete
    3. Mikael, how can you agree with Zwayers first penalty decision but not this one? Clear contact and supportable. Yet yesterday you agreed with almost imaginary contact. The double standard on this thread today is laughable. Yesterday complaining about not enough VAR and now complaints about too much.

  31. Looking at halftime replays. Looks like Messi tripped Napoli player before his sensational solo goal.

    ReplyDelete
  32. This should be in the other section, but yesterday when Juventus player clipped Napoli player, you can see Juventus player raise his hands in gesture to prove his innocence, which is sure sign that he did make contact with Napoli player, but was the clip enough to bring down the Napoli player or did he basically dive and let himself fall once he felt the contact, basically diving? Because of that doubt that creeps in due to so many players diving, I wouldn't have called the penalty kick. For me, there has to be certainty to call a PK.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Cakir is having a bad game, rather unconvincing.

However, I think that a penalty for Napoli was a correct and good decision, at least supportable.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Cakir gave yc for spa to Napoli but the throw in that led to the promising attack looks like to be a foul. Barca's player one foot was on the air while throwing the ball

  43. After yesterday’s and today’s games there is no discussion about who is among the best referees in the world when it comes to the whole career. Surely a referee can have a bad day in his office but with VAR there should be no big mistakes. I’m now fully convinced that Brych is along the best referees. He is a strong and proper referee who doesn’t let anyone do what they want to. In my opinion Cakir is way to gentle on the pitch and players do notice it. Today Skomina should be appointed for this game, but I’m still supporting Cakir because of his long and wonderful career.
