  2. I did not expect Kuipers there to be honest, because he did only one match since covid situation started, I would expect someone who officiated regularly in the past months.

  3. Tomorrow friendly match between Marseille and Montpellier has been canceled due to suspicion of covid in the Montpellier's team. Clément Turpin was appointed of this match.

    1. Probably in Slovenia...
Skomina is not only referee in the Europe, there are 26 elite referees and they all have right to be appointed, not only and always Skomina....
Based on the form this season it would be deserved if he does not get any appointment, but I think we will see his name in Juventus-Lyon.

    1. No need for the polemicism but I agree with your sentiment "V" - do you really think Skomina's form has been bad this season?

      Delete
    2. First of all I don’t want you to think I don’t like Skomina, I think he is one of the best referees in the world. But this season was not the best for him. Maybe I used the wrong expression when I said Skomina did not deserve appointment, what I wanted to say is there are other elite referees that deserve appointment much more than Skomina. I don't think he has been that bad, but I also think that he is not in form this season and based on his appointments seems like Rosetti thinks similar. He had only 2 Champions League matches in group stage and 1 Europa League (which was a clear sign Committee was not that happy with his performance in Leverkusen-Atletico). Just to compare; Kuipers, Taylor, Makkelie, Orsato, Del Cerro and Turpin had 4 games in Champions League group stage. Furthermore, this is already Mateu Lahoz's and Marciniak's third appointment in knock-out faze this season. Even Cakir who was suspended for two matchdays has more matches in Champions League this season than Skomina. I just wanted to say that Skomina was not the best this season that was clear if you compare his appointments with other top elite referees. And it looks like Committee thinks the same…..

  8. OT from Spain:

Referees promoted from 2ªB to Liga Smartbank (2nd Division):

    -David Gálvez Rascón (Madrid, 1981)
-Francisco José Hernández Maeso (Extremadura, 1988)
    -Rafael Sánchez López (Murcia, 1991)

    Congratulations for all! Very deserved.

As Liga Smartbank/Segunda season is not finished yet due to the Deportivo-Fuenlabrada and Covid stuff, CTA-RFEF has released a 'non-professional report' covering only 2ªB and Women 1st Division.

    1. Final standings of Talentos y Mentores program. The referees from 1st place to 20th one are 100% promoted to 2ªB, referees from places 21 to 25 are likely to be promoted. Rezola Etxeberria still needs to handle a game.

    2. Could you explain, what the different columns mean in the document (Puesto Comite, Fase III, Fase IV)?

      Delete
    3. Gladly ;)

'Puesto Comité' are the points depending on the referee's final position in regional committee standings. If you are the best referee from your region, you get 100 points. If you are 2nd best of your region, 90 points, 3rd 85 points, etcetera. This is made to favour some regional balance - i.e CTA-RFEF board members don't want to see 3 referees from some regions promoted and none from other promoted, so this is a quite big bonus to help the best referee from each regional committee to be promoted to 2ªB

'Fase III' are the points from Phase 3 of Talentos y Mentores program: Physical tests, LOTG test, English test, psychology test, RFEF regulations test... the higher the marks on these tests, the higher the score of 'Fase III'. Maximum score is 100, and referees must have at least 80 points to be eligible for promotion - that's why on a side note below, 5 referees (including UEFA Third Woman referee Ainara Acevedo Dudley) appear as being discarded for having a score below 80 in 'Fase III', despite being appointed for promotion play-off games

'Fase IV' are the points based on observer's mark of referee's play-off match. Maximum score is 50 (excellent performance). As Rezola Etxeberria couldn't handle any play-off match as for now, his provisional score in 'Fase IV' is 0.

  9. Tuesday 4 August 2020 (Kick-Off: 20:45)
    Brentford v Fulham

Martin Atkinson - Lee Betts & Constantine Hatzidakis - Peter Banks

Atkinson with unbeliavable less than 3YC per game this season, 28 YC less than Taylor in the same number of games (32). Maybe he has his own LOTG article regarding disciplinary action :)

Can someone explain to me how it is possible that there is no VAR in this game? Such high stakes and PL referee appointment, Wembley has all the conditions for VAR implementation...

  10. Considering that all five Saudi Pro League games today will be handled by local referees, it seems neigh on certain that Benoît Bastien (kindly reported by Stake to be in KSA for this round of matches) will almost definitely handle the top derby game Al Nassr - Al Hilal on Wednesday evening (KO 2000CET).

    Fantastic appointment for Bastien!

    Replies
    1. In addition, according to media in Bosnia Irfan Peljto was reportedly in KSA to officiate the Al Ahly - Al Hazm game (quite a tough one if my memory of both teams serve me right), but that game has been given to Shukri Al Hanfosh. It was reported that the Al Adalh - Al Ettifaq game has had to be moved due to some problems with travel (surely foreign referees) so it is my guess that Peljto's trio will handle that game tomorrow.

BTW Saudi papers confirm my prediction with Bastien's trio to the Al Nassr - Al Hilal game, with Jérémie Pignard as VAR.

      Delete
    2. Well spotted, obviously there were some complications (traveling problems?), I hope Peljto will get 2 matches as planned, it is important for him because of VAR experience.

  11. Italy Serie B Playoff - QF
    Wednesday 05 August

    21:00 Cittadella - Frosinone
Simone Sozza - Marco Scatragli - Andrea Tardino - Giovanni Ayroldi
    [Eugenio Abbattista - Antonio Rapuano]

    1. A first-year-serie-B referee has been appointed for a play off in a single game, that's absolutely remarkable.
Sozza and Ayroldi at moment are considered as potential Italian top referees of the future. This appointment confirms that.
Last serie B referees to get a play off game at their first season in the category were Irrati and Massa in 2011 and 2012 respectively.
Another very important news is that very likely from next season serie B committee will be abolished (still not official, though), and there will be again an unique panel with serie A and serie B referees (CAN A-B). This would help for a better development of young referees. Rizzoli should spend his fourth season as head, and this would be the last possible one, but also regarding his confirmation nothing seems to be sure. Rocchi could get a role maybe in this regard. We will know more at the end of this month.

    2. Is Giovanni Ayroldi related to Stefano Ayroldi, the AR who caused Rosetti's early retirement in 2010?

      Delete
    3. Yes, he is Stefano’s son. The brother of Stefano, Nicola, was a Serie A ref too.

    4. What about Alessandro Prontera? I watched him in Serie A last week and he was good too.

    2. 1) FK + RC for DOGSO. I remember watching this on my computer, Eskov correctly ejected Camavinga.

      2) Offside. Brilliant save from Faroese GK having not one but 2 players potentially obstucting his vision

      3) Offside.

      4) Not violent conduct but SFP. Horror incident for Del Cerro Grande who issued a YC... after realizing he forgot his cards and had to ask them to Hernández Hernández.

      5) De Ligt's PK by Soares Dias, never a PK for me tbh.

      6) PK (and what a brilliant onside by AR2!) I think this clip was shown in Batta's UEFA masterclass on SPA vs DOGSO situations.

  15. Good 1H from Kuipers in Sevilla-Roma.
His lenient style is working well, good feeling for the game, solid foul detection and fitness.
A penalty appeal from Sevilla for handball correctly rejected and a very good no-foul call prior to 2nd goal.
One correct caution for ROM#11 (reckless challenge).
Very pleasing officiating from the Dutch.

  18. Correct (and stupid) PK by Marciniak.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Impossibile to raise this offside for AR1 if you ask me, he did a correct thing in keeping flag down. Offside can't be perceived live without technology.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Very tight and long check for offside in Marciniak's game.

    ReplyDelete
  21. 8 Europa League games after the resume, 4 VAR interventions to correct decisions, with an average of 0,5 interventions per match.
    1) Penalty and RC suggested to Kružliak in FC Shakhtar Donetsk (UKR) - VfL Wolfsburg (GER).
    2) Penalty for punishable handball suggested to Taylor in FC Internazionale Milano (ITA) - Getafe CF (ESP).
    3) Disallowed a goal in Wolverhampton Wanderers FC (ENG) - Olympiacos FC (GRE)for extremely tight offside missed by AR1, but rather a correct NO FLAG there, impossible to see live.
    4) RC suggested to Kuipers in Sevilla FC (ESP) - AS Roma (ITA) for what looked like a clear violent conduct (elbowing deliberately the opponent).

Overall I think that all interventions were absolutely correct, one can have only a doubt about the disciplinary aspect in Kyiv, but the VAR was allowed to intervene there because foul was outside. We can't know, maybe VAR didn't suggest RC and it was a direct decision by referee once he rewatched video. The other three interventions are for quite clear situations, and exactly what I expected from VAR.
The level of officiating on the pitch has been good.
Now focus on Champions League, I'm really sorry that we will have a definitely shorter number of games than past seasons and some officials will clear miss a big opportunity. Not so much room for many names.

    1. + disallowed goal for Sevilla in 74' (offside)

      Delete
    2. The disallowed goal was a confirmation of the on-field decision, not an intervention.

      Delete
    3. Are in your opinion any of the on-field officials to blame for any of the four mistakes?

      Delete
    4. Yes, 1, 2 and 4

      Delete
    5. Officials must be fully blamed in 1: Very poor original decision from Kruzliak (and maybe AR2).

2 and 4 were rather missed incidents (elbow as a weapon, handball in a melée of players) than perception mistakes.

No blame for 3, milimetrical offside.

      Delete
    6. Sorry of course my mistake, "free kick" and not "penalty" suggested to Kružliak.
The situation in Seville was an excellent call by AR, VAR only confirmed that. Van Roekel and Zeinstra in my opinion are confirmed among the best European assistant referees ever, they get always very difficult and important calls right. Kuipers can be proud.
