  1. Fun fact: Brych has never done an EL SF or final without Sevilla.

  4. I hope that tomorrow I will see the name of Hategan. Otherwise it would be outrageous. He didn't whistle a QF in CL and EL this season.

More than that, this is his 13rd season (!) as FIFA referee and he doesn't have a QF in Champions League. Honestly this is hard to understand when we talk about a referee who whistled SF in olympic tournament, SF in WC u17, QF in WC u20. Also he whistled the final for 3rd place in 2019 World Club Championship.

Tomorrow it will be the last chance for him this season, otherwis he will remain without game in CL or EL finals (because (I can't imagine he will got something bigger). Unfortunately, he comes from Romania, a small country. He is not pushed like Oliver, Taylor, Del Cerro Grande or even Zwayer, who belong to important federations ...

P.S. is really needed that Kuipers (born 1973) to whistle a SF in CL ? Or even Brych (born 1975) to whistle a SF in EL ? Honestly, enough is enough.

    2. Apparently UEFA sent Hațegan home, so he will not officiate any other games:

    4. Maybe, he will have the Supercup. I think, this year is in Budapest, and Hategan is from Arad. And last year he was the FO for Marciniak, if i'm not wrong.

      Delete
    5. That may be an option, but why not even an UEL quarter-final or semi-final? He only got a FO, but no referee appointment, after R16!

    6. About "That is not fair!"...Frankfurt would have been in the EL Final last year, if it hadn't been for Hategan's missed RC in the semifinal at Chelsea...

      Delete
    2. Isidro Díaz de Mera Escuderos (1989) for 1st leg and José Antonio López Toca (1982) for 2nd leg.

95% sure, maybe the order of 1st/2nd legs could change but as I said I'm pretty sure (information, not opinion) these will be the final referees (and main candidates for promotion along with Rubén Ávalos Barrera)

I like Areces Franco (1985) but this season he wasn't in his best form, 3-4 seasons ago deserved promotion and IIRC he was even a substitute in one of them, but not now.

Díaz de Mera Escuderos has been a substitute for promotion in the last 2 years. This season he handled the Aragonese derby Zaragoza-Huesca that also was a direct clash for 2nd place and the famous and continuosly postponed Deportivo-Fuenlabrada of MD42.

López Toca - Segunda referee since 2017) handled this season a Canarian derby (Las Palmas-Tenerife, with a correct DOGSO RC in 20'), the decisive Huesca-Numancia game on MD41 (Huesca won and got promoted, while Numancia was virtually relegated) and the famous Rayo Vallecano-Albacete game, suspended at HT for the incident with Roman Zozulya.

    1. We have for sure many options there, differently from CL.

      Delete
    2. Indeed. And it depends a lot on SF outcomes.

      Sev-Int -> Maybe english referees

Man-Int -> Hategan, Marciniak, Lahoz (depending on CL), Turpin

Shk -> Orsato as one candidate

      Delete
    3. I think that Makkelie should be at least mentioned as candidate there. Also, if I'm not wrong, for some reasons Italian referees can't handle Ukrainian teams.

      Delete
    4. My guess is Cakir. Reasons:
      - In each constellation, we can expect a close final on CL level
      - Cakir is available in each constellation. So, his appointment could already be fixed when making other appointments for semis in CL and EL
      - He could fulfill his palmeras
      - Except Mateu, he is the only big name without EL final appearance, if i´m not wrong
      - Other possible candidates (Makkelie, Turpin, Hategan, Marciniak) will be available in following seasons. So with regard to the future, they could be kept in backhand for next finals

      Delete
    5. I believe Lahoz will most likely be the ref for the EL final (unless Barcelona loses to Bayern). Who do you think will be appointed for the CL final?

  15. The Almeria v Girona match has become a brutal and violent affair. Something that doesn't resemble football at all. The referee tried and failed at allowing the game to just flow by simply turning a blind eye to obvious fouls. Or the referee has some the poorest foul recognition I've ever seen in professional football. He looks like he's in over his head and lost on the pitch
The second half I feel is going to be worse as Almeria is in dire need of 2 goals to go through. I see why this referee was "the second choice" and is only there because of a Covid-19 infection.

  22. Felix Brych is on another planet in comparison to to his fellow UEFA Elite referee's. The man is masterclass in UEFA Competitions. Makes it hard to explain why he struggles in FIFA Competitions.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Just saw a reply of tackle leading to penalty. Studs were up as he jumped into tackle but hard to see if they hit Rashford's shin directly. If yes, should have been RC, not YC. If not, YC.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It wasn't a "direct" hit to the shin. It was more of a "glancing" contact to the shin. But the leg was straight, studs first, and shin height. At a minimum it should have been Yellow. But there were enough merits for it to be Red.

      Delete
  24. For sure a card should have been issued after the penalty call, also to "clarify" the reason of the choice (at least, reckless challenge).
Mikael, I should rewatch it, do you think it was even RC for SFP?

    1. You can't blame Brych tooo much and he did very well to spot it at all, but yes on a theoretical level it was a clear case of Serious Foul Play in my view.

    2. Just a yellow card nothing more.

      Delete
    3. YC is enough for sure !

      Delete
    4. Indeed there were enough merits for a SFP Red Card. At the minimum it should have been Yellow. Only "blemish" so far in an otherwise excellent start by Brych.

  25. Very consistent officiating from Brych, same criterium for both teams.

  26. Excellent Brych at the moment...

    1. Fully correct penalty. Good to see it being called since some times fouls aren't called after shots.

      Delete
    2. Too many refs would have turned a blind eye to that brutal challenge. And they would excuse themselves by saying that the team was able to get the shot off.

      Delete
  29. I like that Brych is not allowing all the unnecessary hand/arm jostling and grabbing to challenge for the ball that has become all too common.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Although e.g. 39/40' Maguire DFK around FO and AR1 clearly never a foul

    2. I disagree as did Brych. Clear and obvious fouls for based on The Laws of the Game.

      Delete
  30. Here is the challenge just before penalty: https://youtu.be/lHTQd7cAC3w?t=94. Slow it down to .25 speed, and I think it can be seen that RC was definitely warranted. Brych may have been watched shot on goal at time studs hit shin, but VAR can't intervene there for obvious error?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The contact is with the side of the foot, not the studs. Yellow card would be the only correct decision in my opinion.

      Delete
    2. Yes, this is a yellow card at most. I don't understand the arguments for SFP at all here. Nothing remotely like this has been given as SFP at the UEFA level recently. It's a fanciful argument.

      Delete
  31. In 38’ Brych whitsled foul 7-8 meters away from the place that foul occur for Man UTD and away from the goal. Very strange.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Brych not going tolerate the EPL style of play today. Bravo!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Sevilla #51 has been exaggerating all contacts also in the previous matches. Amazing Brych not believing him. Hopefully he studied this guy...

    3. Gamesmanship doesn't come naturally to the EPL as a whole. While in La Liga and Serie A they are masters at it.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I really dont like what I see in the last 15 minutes of this (I have to admit very challenging) game, I think Brych lost some control. He is tolerating what could be a clear yellow cards for protests. Luckily, no major clashes between players so far, they are focused more on him...

    1. What? That‘s a masterclass performance

      Delete
    2. Yeah? You think its perfect when players dont respect half of your decisions?

      Delete
    3. When all the decisions made are backed by The Laws of the Game. The opinions of the player don't matter. Yes he's tolerated too much dissent. But I am happy that Brych is not on the pitch to be buddy buddy with the players.

      Delete
  38. The last 20 min of Brych was less convincing. Some issues with foul detection and the way he constantly whistles (long and loud) creates irritation by the players. Also there is less acceptance.

    ReplyDelete
  39. By Far the best in Europe at the moment Dr.Brych

    ReplyDelete
  40. Rewatched penalty incident, the point of impact says RC, maybe the intensity can suggest YC (luckily there wasn't directly the excessive force at first impact).
    But...
    1) Impossible for Brych
    2) VAR not 100% sure of a RC and maybe one could agree
    So player can't be punished.

Brych however can be reproached because he had to book in this scenario, however, at the same time he couldn't have the exact perception of the incident.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Best 1st Half by a referee that I have seen since the return of UEFA Club Competitions. The only two minor blemishes would be the lack of at least a Yellow Card on the correctly spotted PK. The other being the amount of dissent by word and action he's tolerating without taking strict action.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Along with Taylor in PSG v Atalanta. But Taylor maintained his superb level for 90 minutes. Brych has 45 more to go.

      Delete
  42. In my opinion, there was a missed YC for each team in that half (the PK against Sevilla, and ~22' against United); perhaps those cautions (in particular the second one, which came very shortly after a YC to Sevilla) would have relaxed the game a bit. That is my only critique, Brych's attitude and presence have been superb as usual, and the penalty decision itself was terrific.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Ok, so here is my screenshot of the YouTube video of the tackle leading to the PK: https://photoforlaw5.s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled.JPG. You can see the upper studs on the boot, so the side of the upper part did hit Rashford's shin, but you cannot see the studs on the bottom part of the boot, so they hit Rashford's shin. But it is not so clear (especially in real time), so a YC would have been the safer choice.

Not sure if this has been discussed elsewhere.
What is everybody's opinion in regards to these referee's wearing UEFA Badges and not their FIFA Badges.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Really not a fan of it. They look like off-brand, fake FIFA badges, like if you got a fake badge from an online seller. These referees have worked their whole careers to wear a FIFA badge, I would think it carries a lot of symbolism of their acomplishments; therefore I'm disappointed for those who don't get to wear them in these competitions.

      Delete
    2. Thank you for your reply.
Lets see if anybody else wants to share their thoughts.

      Delete
    3. They shouldn't be. Simply because even if referees are officiating in Europe, when it comes to international games, they are FIFA listed.
If UEFA wants to show that referees whistle in their competitions, they could do it.
But simply not by making the impression that they are up only to them and replacing their FIFA badges.
If they want a specific badge, they could make the referees worn it alongside with the FIFA's one, like in some domestical countries like Premier League or Eredivisie (IIRC)

    1. I think there have been a few missed YCs that have hurt his control of the game, even from the first half. I think that we are seeing the results of those errors now. Brych hasn't been bad today really (the penalty call is terrific) but I also don't think this is Brych at his absolute best.

      Delete
    2. Agreed. He adapted too late to pace of the game changing.

      Delete
    3. Agree!

He is doing a good job, but for excellent grade he would need a bit better management. It is brave to try not to be strict and risk to be in focus sending someone off, but it also depends on players on the pitch whether they respect that or abuse it.

Sevilla's no 20 actually extends his right leg to make a challenge which for me would be given anywhere else on the pitch. Ole in his post-match interview was certain that a pen should have been given and I can see why.

  52. Correct no penalty decision in 72'. Arm close to the body, no movement towards the ball.

  53. Brych IMO is losing more and more control....

Dissent after dissent and no real action by the referee...

    ReplyDelete
  54. This is what I don’t like about VAR: protocol says “the decision is still up to referees” but it’s not in cases like these! No way Brych could see what happened, should’ve been rewatched

    ReplyDelete
  55. Missed second YC for Diego Carlos: Brych gave advantage but YC was mandatory. And now Sevilla is 2-1. Brych is losing control :(

    1. I thought the challenge was reckless, but I can understand thinking it was only careless. It was SPA, but they are using the newest LOTG so if advantage was applied, the YC for SPA goes away.

    2. It wasn't him who committed the foul.

      Delete
    3. Exactly, if it is only SPA, then no YC

    4. It was reckless imo, not only careless

    5. Lol losing control. Must be watching another game.

    6. Can you say the 2H is as good as the 1H?

    7. @Modern, you’re right it was Fernando. My bad. Still missing YC imo, but it’s less relevant

    8. Agreed.
It was a long stretch of play without the ball being out of play. But the Sevilla player should have been cautioned after the goal.

  56. Excellent sequence by Brych leading up to the goal 76'-78': first to allow for advantage on an SPA challenge (I thought it was also reckless, but I can accept if he thought it was just careless) followed by some end-to-end sprints and correctly waving away a few claims for fouls on fair challenges. Finishes with a Sevilla goal at 78'.

  57. It was a long stretch of play without the ball being out of play. But the Sevilla player should have been cautioned after the goal for the play in which Brych correctly applied advantage.

  58. I accept all opinions here but I do not really get why Brych 'looses control'. The performance is not faultless but far away from getting trouble with match control. It's a semi-final. Passion and a rough game were expected.

    1. The amount of dissent that he's tolerated is the only major blemish I've seen. The missed Yellow Cards. Well those are in the criteria and opinion of every person.

      Delete
    2. Let’s say that he was 100% in control in the 1H. We can’t say the same for 2H, can we?

    3. Mass confrontations? None
      Violent or brutal challenges? No
      Mobbed by players? No
Frustated, Rattled, Disgusted, Annoyed expression on his face? No
Dissent? A bit too much for my taste. But he did caution two players for their acts (Rashford and Munir).
      So am I missing anything?

  59. Another correct no penalty decision in 84'. Players try a lot now.

  60. Wow, now Brych booked Munir for asking YC. That’s a great call, I’d love to see this every time!

    1. Agreed!

Brych got the right idea but too late. You can survive ignoring even flagrant dissents in fast-flowing games, but once the game slows down, you have to change your tack. Unfortunately the players made Brych look like 'the idiot' in some scenes.

But not a terrible performance by any means.

    2. I would have never imagined that you Mikael W would refer to a referee in that manner. Not sure if to be shocked or impressed by your passionate outburst.

    3. And I would have never imagined that you Modern < By the Book would defend a referee at any cost. Where is that person who blames the refeee for every possible decision and outcome? We miss him.

    4. When the only major blemish I can find in a referee is the excesiive amount of dissent he tolerated. There is not much more I can say.
We say something very rare. A correctly called PK that was not S-O-F-T. A call that was quite courageous. Many referee's would have turned a blind eye to the challenge as a shot was taken after.
A wrong throw in at midfield in itself is minor. Unfortunately Man U allowed Sevilla to then freely march down the field and score.

When the referee crew provides little to no material to shred. Not much can be said.

  61. Excellent YC for demanding a YC for the opponent. We don't see that very often. Good sign.

  62. Sevilla player gesturing for a card, gets one! Great stuff from Brych. Saw that in recent UCL games but no action taken by the refs.

  65. High mark for Felix Brych who showed he is the only reliable German Elite referee, mark 8.6.

    ReplyDelete
  66. And he has done all of this with a relaxed and focused facial expression throughout the entire match. No scowls. No look of frustration.

  67. Superb last 20 minutes by Brych, really commanding there.

I do think earlier in the game he had some errors, a few YCs I would have preferred to see. The game got just *slightly* away from him in the middle portion of the match, nothing serious and certainly not a total loss of control, but I think this maybe would have been prevented had he shown those YCs.

In summary, I think we can say that a "mixed" or "just ok" or "slightly flawed" Brych match is still a very, very good performance.

  68. Sevilla are really going to win this again?

What a love story between a team and a competition...

    ReplyDelete
  69. For sure very good performance by Brych who tolerated too much in the 2H. But I’d love to have such refereeing for all matches!

    ReplyDelete
  70. You can call me biased because I'm a German, however, what I saw was not faultless but a very good performance by Felix Brych. There were many crucial incidents that had to be evaluated and Brych got them right. We can discuss about some more YCs that should/could have been given but no football fan will care after the game. I did not see a loss of match control. It's normal that players protest – we're in a semi-final , it's an important game. No protests would be a dream and not realistic. I think Brych found a right balance between ignoring, warning and sanctioning. The only unfortunate decision was the throw-in decision before Sevilla's 1–1. It was far away from Manchester's goal, but this is something that fans will remember. From a referee's point of view that's a normal mistake and one cannot blame Brych too much.
Overall I'd say it was a very good performance.

  71. Very good performance by Brych. One can argue about his reaction against dissent actions/words from players in the middle of the game, but I think it was the criteria of the German. Good feeling of the game and disciplinary control.
We must underline the good penalty decision early in the game.
I can just hope he will be available at/continue until Euro 2021, as he is without doubt the number one UEFA referee at the moment, for the excellent performances he has delivered thoughout the season.
    Hats off, Mr. Brych.

    1. He should be allowed to continue until WC 2020, same as Orsato. Germany should be represented by Brych, not Zwayer!

  72. Excellent, Dr.Brych. Congratulations for this masterclass

  73. Can anyone explain why Brych consistently performs at high level in UEFA competitions, but when it comes to FIFA World Cup... it seems so different? Almost like two different referees!

    ReplyDelete

    1. IMO he actually had a good start to the 2014 WC (especially in Uruguay-Costa Rica) but wasn't used past the group stage for political reasons, as the German FA voiced some public criticism on Busacca's approach to refereeing in that tournament. In 2018, he was unlucky and made one bad call which ended his tournament early

  75. Excellent Brych. Really like the way he referees every single game. Strong and confident referee who doesn’t really care about players frustration. Amazing referee. It will be a big miss for the referee association when he is going to retire.

  76. Unfortunately I did not watch the match and to be hones I don't know what to think based on tonight's comments. According to comments it appears that Brcyh was perfect tonight, although he missed at least 7 YCs for Sevilla, lost control in the second half and for the moments player made him look like an idiot. I realy don't know what to think now, I'll find the match online amd watch it myself, which I recomend to everybody who did not watch the game tonight because it ia impossible to make any conclusion on Brych's performance based on tonight's comments.

    1. I highly recommend everyone to watch this game, at least because it is really dynamic and one could see some great football. Also from referee perspective there are many interesting situations.

Regarding comments, the majority here concluded that it was a very good, if not excellent overall performance (some even calling it masterclass). What is rather debatable is his way of (not) dealing with protests and dissent from both teams. But it is hardly describable so its the best to watch it by yourself :)

    2. I don't have anything really to add but I wanted to say that your comment was really fun to read Referee 12, it made me laugh (in a good way).
