  1. Interesting to see Bebek fourth official in Kružliak's game. A way to ensure an experienced referee in this role.
Taylor with the first "single-leg" game of recent times in UEFA KO stages. A very big appointment.

    1. I am surprised with Bebek there. But I don't think experience is a factor there (Papapetrou's appointment), it looks to me like all appointed officials are allowed to referee matches with VAR, I think that was the criteria.

  5. So, we can suggest that Taylor will leave in Germany and he is an option for final ?!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Option for Champions League final? Highly unlikely for me, regarding hierarchy as well as current form.

      Delete
    2. I meant option for UEL final in Germany!

I think, UEFA Referee Committee chose the pool of referees who are appointed for German matches(UEL) and Portugal matches (UCL)

      Delete
    3. Then I misunderstood, I thought you meant he would leave Germany instead of staying there.
Then UEL final will be an option I agree, but I wonder if ref teams will stay at the same place from round of 16. I rather think they stay in fixed place from quarter finals on. To have more flexibility in appointments.

    4. It is unknown how UEFA will manage referees regarding both Champions and Europa League appointments, we can only wait and see...

  6. Italian Serie B play off quarter final

    Chievo Verona - Empoli
Davide Ghersini / Manuel Robilotta - Orlando Pagnotta / Riccardo Ros
VAR: Gianluca Aureliano - Daniele Minelli

Ghersini was in charge last week in Cagliari-Juventus. His performance was not so good. He has already had his chances to be promoted, but he didn’t use it. Now he will be in charge in Verona. After this match there will be others quarter finals, 2 semifinals (first and second leg) and final (first and second leg).
At the moment it seems that Juan Luca Sacchi and Manuel Volpi (only at the 2nd year in Serie B) will be promoted, but also Fourneau can be promoted because he had the same number of match in Serie A as his colleagues.

  7. Gianluca Aureliano theoretically has an another season to play, the next. But he will be demoted and will go in the “VAR PRO” team, composed by Banti, Mazzoleni, Di Paolo (Who will be demoted) and Nasca. They are VAR in the best game in each daytime. He’s the only serie b ref that had already more than 20 presences as VAR.

  9. Ole Hermann Borgan (55 y.o.), former Norwegian FIFA assistant referee, is suffering from severe heart failure and multiple strokes.

Borgan's story is a sad one. He had been appointed to be AR for Terje Hauge in the 2006 Champions League final (Barcelona-Arsenal). His local newspaper of course wanted to do a story on him, and the journalist had the idea that he as a sporting goods store owner surely had the shirts of both Barcelona and Arsenal available, and to take a picture of him wearing each shirt.

When the journalist came to see him, he had only found a Barcelona shirt. The journalist insisted that he put it on, which he reluctantly did, and the Barcelona picture was the day before the final on the local newspaper's front page. It of course made worldwide headlines, and Borgan was replaced on the morning of the game, and suspended for life from refereeing.

He suffered debilitating mental illness, inactivity, obesity of 150
    kg and other health consequences.

Wish Borgan a speedy recovery and better health soon!

    2. I think the point is not Ukraine specifically. Ukraine is just mentioned to point out the game (if he didn't point it out, I would have to look for myself which game was meant, whereas it is easy for me now to check). So it is just a general comment (why 5 different countries to another country), not pointed to Ukraine.

    3. Officials from 2 different countries sent to the matches played in Denmark, England and Italy, so why not the same to the match in Ukraine? It is about UEFA and limiting internacional travel, not about Ukraine. This situation should have been avoided by UEFA under the current circumstances.

    1. It's long and complicated.

      1) LaLiga finished 2 weeks ago but there has been a mess with the Deportivo-Fuenlabrada game of Liga Smartbank (2nd Division) game - Fuenlabrada announced there were positives on the squad just 1 hour before kick-off and game was suspended, you have more info in this post:

      http://law5-theref.blogspot.com/2020/07/domestic-competition-appointments-17th.html?showComment=1595286580626#c1449289262016858024

After the RFEF Competition Committee resolution today, match has been re-scheduled for this Wednesday at 20:00 CET. If nothing more happens (unlikely tbf), promotion to LaLiga play-offs are yet to be re-scheduled and played.

      2) The Tercera to 2ªB play-offs (promotion from 4th to 3rd category) had a format change due to Covid (instead of the classic inter-regional play-off, they were made intra-regional). Play-off final game from Basque Country (Portugalete-Sestao) got suspended also a few hours before kick-off due to a Covid positive, and appointed referee Ibai Rezola Etxeberria (an official promotion candidate within the 'Talents and Mentors' program) was left without match (last phase of the program consists on handling a play-off game and the observer's mark along with other stuff from previous phases sums to make your mark in order to get promoted or not).

Fortunately, the improvised format included an extra promotion phase to give the last 2 promotion spots. These 2 matches are being played in a football pitch located in RFEF headquarters in Madrid. Rezola Etxeberría was appointed to one on the matches in order to finally have an observer mark without having to wait for Portugalete-Sestao to be played, and a local referee from Madrid was appointed for the other match. But, when tests were made to the 4 teams once they arrived to the RFEF headquarters' hotel, some positives were confirmed in one of them (C.D. Marino), so this additional promotion phase has also been temporally put off - and Rezola Etxeberría has his 2nd suspended match in a row, poor guy!

      A mess.

  17. Very interesting interview released by Rosetti to Italian pay TV SKY Sport.
    Link (with video):
    https://sport.sky.it/calcio/champions-league/2020/08/04/rosetti-intervista

    Most interesting points:
As committee, Rosetti and the other members were absolutely worried about the health of their referees, so they made many calls to stay in contact with them and to have updated info about their lives.
Kulbakov was the only referee appointed during the whole period of lockdown, while other ones were forced to stay at home without any chance to go out. So, based on that, different programs have been assigned to keep all of them in form.

Technical reminders with masterclass were sent to referees.
About medical aspects, referees will have coronavirus test before leaving for the game (3 days before) and then another one once arrived at the location of the game. In this regard, all travels have been organized in the best possible way.

During the lockdown UEFA has opened a platform in which there has been a frequent discussion between the committee and the head of refereeing of most important football countries in Europe. This has helped in regard to find consistency.

Rosetti is convinced that players must feel free to play without being too much worried about handballs. It is up to referees to understand when a touch must be punishable (this is an answer given to an original question by journalist about the fact that in Italy this season a very high number of penalty for handball has been whistled).

A final answer about the presence of VAR, Rosetti says just that he wants "correct interventions" by VAR, regardless on how many times this could mean. Of course less interventions means more quality on the pitch and the contrary. Refereeing on the pitch is first and only important thing, big personality is needed to take decisions, then VAR, but only as help in case of evidence...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agreed on the DOGSO. At UEFA Elite level, really not a good decision to award a penalty instead of a freekick, bad crucial mistake.

SYC is a 'classic' late tackle where careless vs. reckless is at the referee's discretion, but considering the contact was high, certainly preferable to call to show the cards.

      Delete
    2. Thanks @The Referee for the clips.

About the DOGSO: in the wider understanding I think the foul does 'deny an obvious goal scoring opportunity', but I think the paradigm nowadays is to assess that as a SPA, considering the attacker is running wide.

Would be interesting to know UEFA's evaluation.

      Delete
    3. Maybe the fact that he gave penalty at first played a role? If he didn't show the RC, it would have been harder to 'sell' the decision to Wolfsburg.

      Delete
    4. I watched again this incident and indeed Mikael, you are right. DOGSO is fully OK, and whistling penalty instead free kick looks more a serious mistake, than what I had noticed live. Stopping the video, it looks very clearly outside. I think Kruzliak could have spotted that.
Let's also say very good intervention by Treimanis at his first game as VAR.
And about the possible mistaken identity, I missed this situation, are there more info about that? I checked a tweet in which it was reported that VAR corrected referee but this was not clear from TV.

      Delete
    5. I agree that DOGSO can be supported without any problem, but is considering this as no DOGSO clearly and obviously wrong, justifying an on-field review?

      Delete
    6. If I understand it correctly, Kruzliak didn't show a YC initially, therefore he had not evaluated it as DOGSO. Therefore I share the feeling, that an OFR was not required here as the referee evaluated the foul (no "missed incident") and SPA doesn't seem to be a clear and obvious error.
And the factual decision regarding the location of the foul should be done without OFR.

      Delete
    7. The mistaken identity was only checked, Kružliak had originally cautioned the correct player, however in the VAR graphic after the incident, they incorrectly showed that VAR changed the referee's decision.

      Delete
    8. Thanks MT, indeed the info shown on TV was wrong.

      Delete
    9. @Mikael W No problem!

About the RC for DOGSO - IMO DOGSO is surely the 'better decision'. I am not 100% sure whether no DOGSO is a clear and obvious mistake, @Anonymous - it's close to a borderline situation (I'm talking about it in combination with the in/out of penalty area decision). Taking into account the valuable information that Treimanis shared in the post FIFA U-17 World Cup interview about differences between use of VAR in FIFA and UEFA competitions and also the fact that this was a 'double incident', I would predict that this OFR recommendation would be very supported by FIFA and deemed as 'the better decision' by UEFA.

Regarding the 'mistaken identity situation' - @Chefren, here's a link to the point of the incident in a full match record video: https://ok.ru/video/1820171307626?fromTime=5111. The YC was shown only once, and to the correct player (#4). Therefore this wasn't a mistaken identity review. I would call it a case of 'missed identity' - to me it looks like the referee waited for the VAR to say (or confirm) which player commited the foul (and it looks like Treimanis did that). If so, the VAR protocol was broken because Kružliak didn't make an original decision. (I think you can't blame Treimanis for anything here - it would be a bit strange if he said 'I can't say that; make an original decision first, then I will correct if necessary.') But IMO the protocol should allow the referee to not show a YC to anyone if he and other on-field match officials totally miss the offender - as in this case, it seems.

      Delete
    10. I agree with the comments about the criteria of 'general direction of the play' being the only criteria to be debated in the assessment of challenge as DOGSO, but being definitely supportable as a DOGSO.

A very similar incident happened between Sunderland and Portsmouth last season with the challenge awarded by referee Andy Woolmer as a DOGSO on the FoP but it was overturned by the English FA on appeal from Sunderland after the match: https://youtu.be/e3YAgFs7owo?t=129

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 4th officials usually don't have an open mic connected to the other 3 officials due to the 4th official constantly talking to managers and other club staff. They use a push-to-talk system, meaning they need to press a button that the mic gets activated. This button is usually below their jacket, so they need their hands there to push that button :)

  27. Missed YC by Taylor against Mata, for a clear (at least) reckless challenge, there was also a silent check for a possible red.
