  1. Ajax are guaranteed a spot in the UCL Group Stage for next season if Lyon are out of this season's UCL. So for me, rather unlucky choice. It most probably won't influence Makkelie, but this should be avoided (because media will definitely point this out after a possible mistake).

    1. I think that UEFA cannot always take peripheral issues into account. With every match and referee you can think of something or retrieve something from the past. They assume integrity and that involves appointments based on quality. Perhaps there is more pressure now on Makkelie because of extra attention. But elite referees should handle that.

    2. Interesting that appointments are made so early, I expected it tomorrow or saturday.

Anyway, moderators will make an article with full appointments, thats for sure.

    3. In Coronavirus times one can understand this choice, most important thing is that officials are from another country, however with so many games and most of the referees having to make long / important travels, one could wonder whether it is fair to apply this policy only in some games...
In any case, I will never blame UEFA for something like that, we are still living in a very particular period of the history.
And... yes: posts with CL and EL assignments for first rounds will follow soon...

    1. What do you mean? UEFA categories? There haven't been changes so far and there aren't informations at moment in that regard. Maybe the next update will be made on December after 2020-21 group stage games.

    2. Yes UEFA categories, but actually I thought about changes to the list like new referee e.g. Munro (sco) Sabotic (lux) Ciochirca (aut) ...
      How many names are there?

  8. In The Netherlands, there are serious rumours and calls to take Makkelie away from this game and the decision by UEFA has been called 'extremely stupid' (Dick Jol) and I can only agree with him. Makkelie can only lose, it seems like UEFA hasn't thought about this assignment for even one second. (For those who don't know: Ajax qualify for CL next season if Lyon don't win this season's CL and therefore the match is of great importance for Dutch football)

    1. Why do they care? I mean, the only one who could potentially worry is the french side.

And I dont think this will influence Makkelie at all, he is a great professional.

  10. To em the strange that is that if some people want to complain this appointment, they should be French, not Dutch.

  11. As always the Telegraph. They have always been against Makkelie. I am sure he will ignore all of this and will continue his great season.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I realy don't uderstand this fuss about Makkelie, if you remember UEFA never cared for stuff like this.
Last year champions league semi final match Barcelona-Liverpool was refereed by Kuipers. Another semi final match was Tottenham-Ajax and was refereed by Mateu Lahoz. I don't think Makkelie will be removed.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I'm Dutch and I dont know why some old top refs always says negative things about current referees. Dick Jol and also Mario van der Ende often criticise the Dutch top refs. This time again.
Are they jealous that their time is over?
Danny Makkelie is a top referee and I think (and hope) he will confirm his great attitude and form in this big appointment.

Question: is he a candidatie for EL-final?

    ReplyDelete
  14. As fellow Dutchman I don’t have any doubt about Makkelie his professionalism. He will do his job as best as he can. Jol and others don’t question this. They are just stating that he can’t do it good for the media. If Lyon advances, the Dutch media will create a story. When City advances and Ajax will directly qualify for next seasons group stages the French media will.

You can’t do it right either way. There I share the opinion that uefa should’ve avoided this situation.

    1. Uefa could (maybe should) have switched makkelie and skomina around to avoid this fuss... makkelie is in better form than skomina too imo so it would have made sense..

  15. Exactly. No one doubts his integrity, but UEFA could have chosen another match for Makkelie, since there are other options; it is not a final.

  16. To be honest I'm surprised by this absolutely meaningless polemic. If UEFA has appointed Makkelie, this means that he is fully allowed to handle this game. Moreover, it is not something related strictly to this match, so I really find it absurd that this news had such spread, as Makkelie was going directly to decide the future of Ajax, that's wrong. We should avoid such things, but even before that, we should never question the integrity of an UEFA Elite referee.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well said. I am French and I think this polemic is nonsense. If we start to doubt of the integrity of an international referee, we can stop football right now.

      Delete
    2. If you read carefully the comments above, people did not doubt the referee's integrity, but are simply asking why UEFA, having multiple resources did not avoid the situation altogether. That's all; no one pointed at Makkelie, but rather at UEFA's choice.

      Delete
    3. Fully agree Chefren. And we have to add that absolutely no polemic in France about this. None press or football experts are speaking about this point. So, be confident with Danny Makkelie who is a great referee. :)

      Delete
    4. Chefren, as said above i don’t have any questions about the integrity of Makkelie. Totally not. He can handle the match perfectly. My reaction would be the same when Kuipers was appointed for this match.

The only thing is that UEFA should be wiser than they are now. They risk a situation nobody wanted and in which Makkelie can be the only victim. As we all know how politics work in modern football world.

      Delete
    5. Bull...it, should UEFA be wiser because some Dutch media make an issue of this? Frenchref clearly said that even in France this isn’t discussed. Apart from that, it’s not only this match that Lyon has to win to push Ajax into the qualifying round, they’ll have to win the Champions League.
And if UEFA would start taking these kind of issues into account, where do we stop? Can’t a Dutch referee handle any games of Juventus anymore because Matthijs de Ligt plays for Juventus? And can’t a Spanish ref handle a game of ManCity because Guardiola is the coach of that team?

      Delete
    6. It's a synthetic storm in the Netherlands media in order to put pressure on Makkelie. They probably knew about his appointment much longer than 48hrs before and had all these stories 'prepared'.

It's telling that in France nobody gives a sh*t.

  18. UPDATE :
In France today, many newspaper explain why there is a polemic about the choice of the Committee to appoint Danny Makkelie for this match.

However, not a single one of them say it would be a problem, since they explain Dick Jol’s point of view. I think that Jol inadvertently put a spotlight on this appointment, which adds pressure on Makkelie.

French newspapers usually don’t comment referee appointments, so I don’t think they would’ve mentioned it if it was not for Jol’s words.

Look at the right leg of City player, and also at the color of the grass. It is quite clear that Lyon player is onside.

      Delete
    2. Agree with Chefren, there is no need for special technology there to see it was onside.

      Delete
    3. Is that the best UEFA can offer? That's the same terrible angle that the TV broadcast showed. Where's the horizontal angle that would leave zero doubt?

      Delete
    4. Yes it was quiet obviously onside.

    5. I'm not convinced by a image taken at an angle on such a tight play. Move the camera a few degrees in either direction and the image completely changes.

      Delete
    6. No it doesn't. Look at the lines made on the field by the cut of the grass.

      Delete
    7. Try watching every game at WC 2002 and assess every offside call using that wide shot only!

      Delete
    8. The cut of the grass is not an infallible reference. As an AR I judge offside onside based on the position of the bodies.

    9. You're impossible. You wouldn't agree with someone if they told you the grass was green.

    10. I don't know why some people always see some conspiracies by UEFA or FIFA. People, enjoy football and refereeing and stop spreading conspiraciy theories every day here on the blog...

      Delete
    11. Furthermore, i guess you are not an experienced AR since every AR instructor I have listened always sais to ARs to use cut of the grass as the help in tight situations.

      Delete
    12. As an AR is it not imperative to always try to be in line with the 2nd to last defender? Not to be ahead or behind that player. Because a few steps ahead or behind changes your visual angle. This especially important on tight plays.

In regards to VAR images. We've seen better camera angles used in the past. We've seen competitions draw the line to show onside offside. Yet here in the Quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League. We get an angled image taken from the nose bleed seats.

      Delete
    13. Conspiracy? What are you talking about? There's no conspiracy here. My point is that UEFA can do better. They've done it better in the past. If they're going to implement a system. Use it to its full potential. To include necessary multiple camera angles to assist VAR's in doing their job.

I don't run down the line with my head down looking at the grass. My focus is across the pitch at the positioning of the players involved.

      Delete
  29. Regarding VAR technical set up: the biggest fault of VAR is in technical setup: case in point is in Lewandowski's goal, which from the angle at https://youtu.be/79y8vL69ynM?t=555 he looks obviously offside. VAR uses TV cameras, which are very far away from the action and at the wrong angle. There should be two cameras per half of field on each touchline near the penalty area to get the correct angle to see offside and fouls. One or two tv cameras nearer to the center of the field and too far away do not allow anyone to clearly see offside and many fouls, especially when offside is determined by centimeters. Unfortunately, the team owners or referee associations probably would not want to pay extra money for more cameras, but at least the technical set up of VAR should be up discussion and looked at critically.

Furthermore, I find it hard to believe that a Confederation as wealthy as UEFA can't afford to install more cameras in an empty stadium.

  32. Makkelie, FO or AR1 MUST see this malicious foul from Walker... not the best performance tonight from the Dutchman if you ask me.

  35. Solid first half with an excellent call from AR2 leading to the 1-0.

  36. Good first half by Makkelie!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think that Makkelie did well in first half, I don't see mandatory cards missed, let's see whether second half, as one could expect, will be more challenging, given the score.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Agreed, good and steady first half by the Dutch team. In full control and as Chefren said no mandatory cards missed, sanctioning fits the pace and rhythm of the first half.

  39. Rare illegal throw in? What mistake?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Looked like advantage played when De Bruyne got pushed over, but a free kick a little past halfway line would be more advantageous.

  41. i must agree, I am very happy with Makkelie's performance in first half. He realy developed into great referee. I hope the second half will alsp be good for him.

  42. AR2 signalized a very soft foul against City.

  44. Very soft yellow for Rodri IMO.

  48. I must say that despite the mistakes in foul detection and card management (IMO), Danny Makkelie is very enjoyable to watch on the field and has the right attitude towards the players. His management is remarkable.

However I expect more in foul detection / card management.

  49. Good YC 65' but very risky to blow the whistle when de Bruyne is looking to shoot from 17 yards out! Worked out all right as the shot was blocked but why not wait another .5 seconds there?

    1. Not the best moment to whistle, lucky Makkelie.

    2. Later he wouldn't be allowed to whistle anymore as advantage was then played. So it was the last chance. Good anticipation.

  51. Game will become more difficult for Makkelie now.

  52. Convinced by the decision taken by Makkelie in this situation in 71': not enough for a penalty. He didn't hesitate, VAR check was very short.

    1. Yes, I thimk we would have new discussion about another "soft penalty" if he whistled that. Agree with the final decision not the awart a penalty.

    2. Where is the consistency among UEFA referees?
In previous days it's a PK.
      Today? No

      Delete
    3. IMO UEFA should give instructions to referees regarding situations like that to get uniformity.

      Delete
  53. That was the quickest check ever. Record time.
Those have been given recently. Consistency?
Try running at full speed and then have somebody push you.

    1. Hahaha. We all know what you would write if that penalty was given (hint: S-O-F-T)

      Delete
    2. I agree with you in part about those penalties have been given recently and there is obviously no consistency between referees. I think UEFA should put situations like this in RAP and say when this things should be whistled and when not.

      Delete
    3. At least it would have been the least "S-O-F-T" of them all hahaha ;)

I'm okay with S-O-F-T, as long as there is consistency and uniformity among all referee's. If it was a PK yesterday, it should be a PK today and so on.

Outstanding performance by both assistant referees.

      Delete
  57. I haven't watched too much of Makkelie before, but even just this second half makes it clear why he's making such good progress in his career. It feels like a very modern style: sure, there are some issues in foul detection / disciplinary control (as WCReferee was mentioning); but his personality and gestures work well, and he seems to have a good "feel" for the game, which we all know is the mot important thing for FIFA these days. The best way I can summarize what I've seen so far is it seems like his yellow cards have depended on how much they help his control of the game rather than on if the challenges actually warrant them. Not my cup of tea, but if this is the style UEFA / FIFA want, he seems quite successful at it.

  58. Did Toko-Ekambi really touched the ball?

    1. Possible foul though; for me the defender was clipped. Surprised this one wasn't reviewed for the foul.

      Delete
    2. The foul was never going to be called. Goals have been scored on set pieces by players who literally shoved away the player covering them.

      Delete
  60. The closer replay didn't show a touch by player, but the live sequence shows a weird movement in the path of the ball immediately after the jump of player in offside, that's why I was deceived. For sure VAR checked everything carefully there.

  61. Tonight we see a totally "anti-Zwayer" performance. Last Friday we saw an annoyed Zwayer, making a crucial mistake and with an almost flawless card/foul management. However, the cards were correct on each situation but not part of a plan/line.

Tonight we see a referee who makes little mistakes in foul detection and bookings, and for sure this can be improved. However, all the cards are there for something, not issued "at random". The attitude is perfect and the management is brilliant.

I must say I prefer the second option.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I completely agree with your analysis. I prefer the first option though! But alas, I think UEFA and FIFA are on your side here... :P

      Delete
    2. Don't forget that according to UEFA marking system you get lower mark if you lose control over the match than if you make a crucial mistakes. Amd crucial mistake may decide the winner of the match (wrong penalty and goal scored for example).

  62. WOW another excellent NO FLAG by AR1. This is the best performance ever from both assistant referees, given the difficulty of crucial calls.

  63. Haters are silent now. They wanted Danny to make mistake so they can say thats the reason Lyon is out so Ajax can qualify in group stage of CL.

Amazing and excellent game for him and brilliant ARS tonight.

    1. I was one of the people who doubted this appointment, but I think you got me wrong. My "hate" wasn't towards Makkelie, it was towards UEFA who put Makkelie in a more difficult spot than usual (I still think they should have given him a different game, like Leipzig - Atlético, but luckily he did well)

  64. Another good news for Mateu Lahoz is coming, City out, it is hard to believe that committee wont use this occasion to appoint him for the final! Everything seems prepared for him there!

  67. All in all, I think we can be satisfied with refereeing in Champions league quarter finals. My guess for PSG-Leipzig iz Orsato, Bayern-Lyon Kuipers (in 2010 the same semi final match was refereed by Rosetti, I am sure he won't miss the oportunity to be appointed as observer on the very same match he refereed exactly ten years ago). Lahoz for the final.
Turpin or Makkelie for EL final.

  68. More and more I see Makkelie, I really enjoy his style. His development as Elite referee has reached a very high pinnacle. What one can like more than other things is that he is always focused on the game, he never has that "relaxed approach" we see often in other referees. He finds always the best way to communicate with players but to keep a certain distance from them. Most important, he takes his decisions without any influence, and with a quickness, this was evident in the penalty appeal in 71'. He is very "cool".
I think he did very well this evening, about the situations, everything is related to the 1-2 scored by Lyon. I think committee will support Dutch team regarding the NO FLAG, once confirmed that player didn't touch ball. Both assistant referees with a superb performance.
Probably, times are mature for a further step for Makkelie in this season. Let's see what commmittee will decide.
    I really enjoy is refereeing.

  69. Prior second goal Lyon - clear foul. All watch offside, but that is clear foul. Look at the movement the hand in which the whistle is. Every decision, every (foul - YC yes or no, Makkelie waits VAR.

  74. Makkelie and Kuipers - currently two best referees in Europe, regarding both performances and style! Extremely firm, elegant, composed. They deserve final every year, so good they are.

Just compare them to arrogant Zwayer, chaotic and nervous Marciniak or to annoyed and bored Skomina. Real Masterclass!

  75. For less tripping, Felix Zwayer give penalty-kick in the match Lyon vs. Juventus. Clear tripping, obvious foul. Ende!

    1. And for more tripping, Marciniak didn't give a penalty for Atletico ;)

    2. Here on Swiss tv they praise the decision to allow 1-2. They were analysing the situation and they don’t see a foul and therefore a correct goal. We can suspect something but it’s football. Well done of the analytics for the ref.

    3. Complete and total lack of consistency and uniformity from a group of referee's that belong to same Confederation and are assigned by the same Referee Committee.

      Delete
  76. Now a close replay of the possible foul before 1-2 was shown, to be honest it is very hard to spot a contact, even less clear than Juventus - Lyon first penalty situation, play on should be supported there, VAR was right in not intervening.

    ReplyDelete
  77. In my opinion we saw a excellent referee team tonight. Makkelie was feeling the game very well and he was respected by players. He managed very well and I really like his style. For sure one of the best performances in this final tournament. His assistants were superb! And with the 1-2 VAR took really his time and I believe there is no contact or at least no proof of contact. And then the best decision is to allow the goal. I predict semi final for Makkelie or final UEL.

    ReplyDelete
  78. During game referee expert on BT sport said it was clear foul

  79. Several candidates now for semifinals - which should be expected, because normally four games have to be covered.

I think the most obvious candidates are Kuipers and Taylor, with Orsato coming close.
Furthermore Mateu, if he is not spared for the final.
Maybe even Makkelie for the first SF?
Hategan, del Cerro Grande and Oliver technically are also possible, but very unlikely IMO.
However, I would not rule out completely Cakir and Skomina, if UEFA weighs experience and general skill higher than recent performances. Personally, I would not dislike them being appointed, but I assume, many would disagree on that.

    1. Current form and current merit should be the only deciding factor. Assigning based on past glories diminishes the achievements of the referee's who are in great current form.

      Delete
    2. It depends on if they think 2 rest days is enough for Makkelie. I think it is probably more likely that we see him in some capacity in one of the finals; the CL Final whistle is probably reserved for Lahoz, but I could see Makkelie as 4th official or as the EL Final referee.

I'll predict Kuipers and Orsato for the CL SFs; Lahoz for the final. But I'm always wrong :)

  80. After Liverpool - Atletico Madrid, another good performance of the Dutch with superb AR's. In my opinion no foul 2-1 was the right decision but it at least supportable.

Committee was to quick to appoint Marciniak for a EL semifinal, I see no room for Makkelie now. And based on the season, Makkelie is ahead of the Polish referee.

    CL semi's: Orsato and Kuipers
    CL final: Mateu
    EL final: Turpin

The Dutch FA can be proud of 2 high class referee teams!
