Daniele Orsato in charge of 2019-20 UEFA Champions League Final

The UEFA Referees Committee has announced that Daniele Orsato will referee the 2020 UEFA Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and FC Bayern München. The match will be played at the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica in Lisbon on Sunday 23 August at 21:00 CET.
The 44-year-old Italian, an international referee since 2010, will be taking charge of his first major UEFA final, having been entrusted with officiating at eight matches in the UEFA Champions League this season, including Real Madrid’s round of 16 first leg against Manchester City in February.

Orsato has also refereed a quarter-final match at the current UEFA Europa League final tournament which is being played in Germany, while last season he was the fourth official for the UEFA Europa League final between Chelsea and Arsenal.

At the final in Lisbon, Orsato will be assisted by countrymen Lorenzo Manganelli and Alessandro Giallatini. The fourth official will be Ovidiu Hațegan from Romania. The video assistant referee (VAR) role has been assigned to Massimiliano Irrati and he will be helped by fellow Italian Marco Guida. Spaniards Roberto Diaz Pérez del Palomar and Alejandro Hernández Hernández complete the VAR line-up.

So, at the end of the day there's some Spanish presence with Hernández Hernández and Díaz Pérez del Palomar as AVAR.

  7. Congratulations to him and his team! I don't understand the committee's decision though.

I am happy too for Hategan that he got another appointment, although I'm a bit surprised to not see a more experienced name as 4th official

  8. As I said in one of topics, if we see different referee, it will be Orsato. Congrtulate to him, he will have strong support in VAR, Iratti is one of the best in that. I absolutley understand this decision. Once more, Congrats!!!

  9. I'm happy for my compatriot Orsato, congratulation. I wish all the best to the whole team. Personally I think that, avoiding a double choice, Mateu and Makkelie deserved more and that this selection seems unbalanced respect to Rocchi, who overall performed better than Orsato, but we need to respect the choice and be happy for Orsato and his team

Also a very strong VAR, two best VAR teams so far will be together, this should ensure quick reaction and not a single thing missed.

  15. Rocchi reached “only” Europa League final, and Orsato right from nowhere got CL final. And Rocchi is much bigger ref in every single aspect. If Rosetti wanted to give a present to Orsato, he should appoint him for the Europa League final.

  17. Well, I said the other day that we would need to know the official appointment before considering it either fair or unfair. Now we know.

And it is blatantly unfair to me. It is clearly a political appointment with a very difficult justification in terms of experience and performance. Orsato has only refereed UCL quarterfinals so far. Mateu Lahoz has done 3 semifinals.

But it seems that Italy will have trouble having a referee in the UCL for the foreseeable future, so Rosetti has decided to make a "preventive" appointment so it is not a so long walk in the desert for them even though the referee in question has done less merits to deserve it than other candidates. Refer to the paragraph above.

I'm not surprised to see spanish presence there. I guess it is an attempt not to upset the FA too much. But a 4th official spot and 2 additional VAR spots are no replacement for being in the middle. And it has been 15 years since the last time, the longest among the top 5 leagues. Is it a matter of quality? Yes, but of the teams who manage to qualify to the final more often than those of other leagues, not of the referees.

Is it that Rosetti&co don't think that Mateu is unable to handle a final? I don't think so either, otherwise they would have done as was done with Fernández Borbalán and Tagliavento.

Personally, I hope that next year he will have the chance. But there are other strong candidates coming along, and a good season from Atlético, Barcelona, Real Madrid or Sevilla could finally close the window for him and Del Cerro.

    3. One correction, though. It is the second longest: France has not had a referee since 1986 if I'm not wrong. But that case is quite different since there have not been many top referees from France until Turpin (maybe Lannoy)… and Turpin will get it soon, for sure.

      Delete
    4. Yes, and no French referee in EL final since 2001 too.

      Delete
    5. However, we should also remember that 2019 Super Cup was a French appointment, worthy mention for Stéphanie Frappart!
Then, for sure Turpin in future will get both major finals.

      Delete
    6. Agreed. I wish him and his team best of luck though!

      Delete
    7. Frappart appointement in Supercup was so unfair for Turpin...

  18. I dare to say that being just good is good enough to get you a European final as long as you are from italy. A shame that the level of favouritism is so high in UEFA/FIFA. Unfair to Rocchi, Mateu and maybe even Makkelie.

    ReplyDelete
  19. After Lahoz Orsato would be me second choice for this final. Yes I agree he is not the best referee in the world but why would you say he did not deserve this final. He was always number three, then number two and now finaly number one in Italy and he is already 44. I like his style, for me his management is very good and I congratulate him and whish all the best.
Reading the comments regardless who was appointed there would still be a lot of negative reactions.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Don't worry it is sure that after Orsato in this CL final there wont be any other Italian referee in a UEFA final for years and years, maybe for a decade and more.

    ReplyDelete
  21. To be honest I'm quite shocked by reading some comments, I had perceived that Orsato was not the best choice for most of the readers of the blog, but I really think that some statements are unbelievable.
First of all, we are talking about an Elite referee who has a very long experience in this role (Elite since 2015), he has a very long and big experience in one of the most difficult leagues of the world (Italian serie A), in which referees are "vivisected" for every game. He has also been appointed in some FIFA tournaments, he has a CL quarterfinal (2017-18) in his palmares and some recent very good performances in both Champions and Europa League. I make the same question made by some users in other discussions: do you remember a very poor performance by him in Europe? Maybe not... he was overall always quite good.
Yes, it is true that he hasn't the same experience as Rocchi, and he has less notable Champions League big matches, but I think it is not a scandal, as many people are trying to say, if he has been appointed for Champions League final.
As I repeated many times, for me only Mateu was ahead, but for some reasons committee didn't want to give him a final. If you exclude the Spanish, in my opiniom all the other names are at maximum at same level of Orsato if not below.
However I think that two key-reasons for astonishment are:
    1) serie A is not so much followed internationally, and Orsato has been more than excellent in this league by a very long time with three coppa Italia final, very got games, only one very poor performance, and we all remember, Inter - Juventus in 2018, but all the rest, always and simply excellent.
    2) for a long time he was in the shadow of Rizzoli and Rocchi, the same was for the latter before Rizzoli's retirement, this was indeed a big problem, international people couldn't know him more in detail.
The only argument you can discuss for me is palmares, and maybe he could have got further CL KO big games before this one, but for sure he is not the inexperienced man you are talking about.
About Rocchi: in this case I have no problems in admitting that seeing now Orsato getting this final but not Rocchi during his whole career, is quite a nosense, but Orsato has no faults there. Committee made this choice and I think it is not a "fool" choice.
Howver, if Orsato had managed to show the same performances he has shown in serie A for years, he would have absolutely loved this choice. But I repeat myself... he was never bad, and please, before coming to draw conclusions, watch the game...
That's everything I can say about him.
Then, about the appointment, clearly a Spanish help for VAR is a compromise because Mateu is not there. I really don't like these decisions by committee, because it looks like they want to make everybody happy. That's not possible sometimes.
And as very last remark, my first choice for CL final in this situation would have been Mateu Lahoz, I repeat that because I want you understand how much there is the need of being objective while talking about referees. This doesn't prevent me from saying that Orsato is still OK!

    1. Forgot to say that I praise committee for having appointed two "new referees" to finals, what happened with Kuipers in all cases should never happen again. There should be always an option for a game, as result of years of technical work.

  23. By reading some comments here, it looks like an inexperienced young guy has been appointed.
Orsato is at the moment the best Italian referee by far, an Elite referee since 2015.
Honestly, I expected Mateu but Orsato was the only alternative. Makkelie has a lot of time and others referees already had this chance. It’s a shame that Rocchi had not this chance, but it’s not Orsato’s fault! Stop blaming him and just wish him all the best!
I’m really annoyed by the comments on him being appointed only because he’s Italian, I really think that moderators should take actions.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Let me put it this way: I do not think Orsato is a bad referee. It is just the fact that up to now, he has had very few top matches, not even a semi-final. This appointment is undeserved since he hasn't proven on UEFA level that he should be the one to referee this game, just like Frappart hadn't proven herself enough to be main referee for Supercup. He might be a better referee than Lahoz (some people think so), but he doesn't deserve it more based on previous appointments.

  25. I'm one of those who are in love with italian football (for amlost 30 years). In last 15 years I was able to watch live dozen of games from Serie A (I watch live 6-7 games per week from Serie A and Premier League).
What I want to say is the face that Orsato is a very good referee, better than many others from Elite. He is much better than Mateu Lahoz, Taylor, Marciniak, Turpin. Probably he was better than Rocchi. For sure is much better than actual version of Cakir (or even Skomina). Maybe only Kuipers and Brych are better than him at this moment. That's my opinion based on few thousands games (from Serie A, Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Champions League or Europa League) watched during last 15 years.

P.S anyway, Italy won't have a referee in CL final in next 6-7 years. The waiting list is long enough: Mateu Lahoz, Makkelie, Turpin, Marciniak, Hategan, Taylor, Zwayer etc.

    2. Unbeliavable appointment if you ask me, I am shocked a little. This match might turn out ok, but what you want in this kind of clash is someone with more experience. It is only one game, huge stakes and huge political tension. There are many options, even within appointes referees (they could switch him and Munuera for example).

      Delete
    3. The tension it's more in media than on the field of play. Tirana has 6 - 7 foreign players, they don't know nothing about politics of two countries. Without fans it will be not that difficult for Sjöbeg. Still I as Albanian was expected an experience referee. As per UEFA they know very well the tension between two countries. Just to remind that in Serbia - Albania was Atkinson and in Albania was Rizzoli

    1. Well, I think that this can say more about our previous discussion, for sure a semifinal is missing, but in terms of overall experience (big games and KO stage games) Orsato is not so much far away from Mateu. Then, about the performances everybody can have a different idea...
Two words about Hategan as well, I wouldn't have said that in this ranking he appears before Marciniak. For sure the Romanian has received a very particular treatment by committee, being appointed only in rare cases for big games.

      Delete
    2. Yes, Hategan is around for a long time - CL debut in 2011. If we look at the CL list from 2011/12, only Brych, Cakir, Kuipers, Skomina, Collum and Hategan are still on the FIFA list - obviously four of them with CL finals. Luckily Hategan still is young enough to get bigger games in CL during the next years (+EURO and WC).

Regarding Orsato and Mateu, one also has to say that if their last appointments were switched (SF for Orsato, Final for Mateu), the statistic would have been even clearer:
      Orsato 31 (9 KO)
      Mateu 28 (9 KO)

He is almost 40 years old already, must have been FIFA listed for 10 years, and comes from quite a small country (Finland or Estonia if I am not mistaken) I remember him back in the days as a talent with very uneven performances.

    6. Munukka was in focus by FIFA in 2012 when he officiated, among other games, Italy - Malta (quite sonorous for him at that time, FIFA referee since 2010), but unluckily after that his performances were not so good and committee stopped to follow him. He was called as additional assistant referee (when there were still mixed teams) at EURO 2013 and also in this occasion he didn't satisfy too much committee. Recently the Finnish name on focus is Mattias Gestranius.

This is only his second year as FIFA referee and already in first category and now Youth League final. It looks like UEFA has big plans for him... Nice to see Sian Massey appointed with him :)

    9. Thanks, it all makes sense if he is a replacement.

Nice appointment for Kavanagh, Taylor and Oliver did their job very well and now Youth League final for english team. Hopefully this will encourage FA to encourage younger referees, and not insist on Dean, Moss, Atkinson etc.

  30. Congratulations for Orsato.

Orsato will be a final referee in 2020 (Italian is 45)

    Predictions for next years?

    2022 - Taylor (44)
    2023 - Hategan (43)

  33. Okay, I guess there is a problem with most of the bloggers. It is clear that many people don't know this referee enough. The best 3 referees in Italy in 2008-2022 were three: Rizzoli, Rocchi and Orsato. Apart from Rizzoli, who we all know, the competition in the last few years was only between Rocchi and Orsato, who are for sure one of the best Italian refs of all times.
Rocchi was a professional, strictly law-enforcer and quite unemotional referee. Orsato is totally the opposite of Rocchi: he has a strong personality and manages the players through communication skills and personality.
Orsato is by far the most "characteristic" referee in Europe after Lahoz, who has a unique style and is therefore called "el loco".
Compared to Orsato, Taylor is no character at all.

If you want to understand more about Orsato's style, please watch these vids made some years ago and you'll have a clear idea of what he is like.
