  3. I think it is safe to say Collum is there as a support official/fourth official. Hategan's appointment also make sens, he is already in Germany, he could even get a semi-finals I guess. Oliver had a decent season so I am not surprised with his appointment but Orsato's appointment is surprising. The main question is, does this appointment mean he won't be appointed in Portugal and that he is out of Champions League final candidates? In that case list of candidatea became more interesting: Turpin, Del Cerro, Orsato, maybe even Oliver.....
But there are lot of questions about Champions League now. My guess is quarter finals will go to Brych, Kuipers, Lahoz and maybe Marciniak....

    1. I share all your questions, but for sure we can't know. Everything can change. We should check how many appointments for referees in both competitions will follow starting from today.
But once arrived to the decisions for finals, I think they will take into account everything...

    2. I agree, I saw Orsato as a strong candidate for CL games, depending which teams qualify further. Maybe UEFA can exchange him and Cakir :)

      Delete
  4. What is actually my problem - the fact that Cakir's selection for Portugal was previously announced (as well as Ivana Martincic's for WCL final tournament). Because of that I guess lists for final tournaments were already defined and it makes no logic for referees to travel from Germany to Portugal and vice versa. Another thing - what to do with Cakir? He will be in Portugal but did he deserve to be appointed? I think we all agree he do not.

  5. Irrati and Guida will be in charge of the VAR in Duisburg

  6. Since Taylor officiated in Gelsenkirchen on Wednesday and Oliver is now apppinted with Spanish AVAR that could mean there are no other English officials in Germany and that Taylor and his full team either moved to Portugal or went back home to England. I guess the first one is the case, we will se Taylor in Champions League...

    ReplyDelete
  7. Some info I hear coming from Italy, it seems as referees travel from home for every single game, so there aren't meetings, groups... I really don't know!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Orsato surely has to be in CL... One of better referees in Europe expecially after disaster for Zwayer and Cakir

    1. Fernando Tresaco Gracia. He was an AR often at García-Aranda's side during international games and was, if I'm not wrong, interim head of refereeing at FIFA before Massimo Busacca took over in 2011.

    6. Tresaco's title is "Chairman of the Referees Committee", while Navarro is "Director of Referees"... are they different positions or different titles are used in these articles for the same position?

      Delete
    7. Nope - best example is FIFA

Busacca is 'Head of Refereeing' and Collina 'Chairman of Referees Committee'.

      Delete
    8. That applies to FIFA; however, in some countries, the chairman of the Referees Committee has an executive role, leading the Referee Department.

In the Saudi case, are you saying that both Tresaco and Navarro are working there at the same time?

    3. Red card for the first one--mandatory decision, in my opinion.

For the second clip, I think 'play on' is actually acceptable. It's a very weird situation. If there is contact initially, it's a total accident and the attacker might even kick the defender. Then, because the attacker is off-balance he puts his leg in a place where the defender never expects it to be. The defender is not "careless" in any way and tries to avoid contact. I don't think it's enough for a penalty. Unless, of course, the first contact is foul. But definitely not a yellow card.

      Delete
    4. I think, second clip - PK 100%!!!!!!!!!!!!! And YC......

      Delete
    5. Sorry to come back to this, but I am interested in opinions on the second clip if people have them.

Why a PK? Has the attacker done anything careless or reckless?

I guess I think people are a little hung up on refereeing by result. Though rare at the professional level, you can have a "bad result" when neither player has done anything wrong.

Do people see a foul action by the defender here or are we just saying "penalty/YC" because of the result?

    2. According to UEFA protocol, the game shouldn't be postponed.

si existe un positivo o más, pero hay 13 jugadores disponibles de la Lista A, el partido se disputaría salvo que se requiera cuarentena para el resto de integrantes. No obstante, en este caso, la última palabra la tendría el gobierno de Portugal.

    3. @Orsato: It's an argument against him, but I don't think, that it's completely impossible - especially as we have special circumstances anyway.
Maybe it will just be Turpin in any case - but I could also imagine UEFA going for the older alternatives.

@Irrati: If UEFA sees this as VAR mistakes, they might use somebody else. Otherwise Irrati makes most sense IMO, because he is in Germany already and worked with Hategan last week.

    1. I am not sure that everyone will agree, but I think these are just excellent decisions, congrats to Olliver!

Very complicated situations and one can discuss them, but
I believe he made brave and correct decisions.

      Delete
    2. I change my original assessment, the awarded penalty is not soft. Actually it’s nothing less than attacker initiating the contact, so indirect free kick for Basel and yellow card for attacker.
Admittedly, really hard to see in real speed.

      Delete
    3. I see your point now, but I have to say it is EXTREMELY hard to spot it, I had to watch the replay on half speed, and the replay was slow motion.

Moreover, I would not blame Oliver. He was in almost perfect position, but he was unlucky because from his point of view (you have it around 0:24), its more or less clear penalty, and in critical moment (unbeliavable really) there is a player running between the "foul" and himself. Therefore he couldnt properly see that attacker's upper leg is "sliding through air". Logical change of direction by attacker to shorter steps (great move by the way), extremely risky move by the defender and the player disabling the whole view - what a combination! Luckily, it didnt influence the outcome.

      Delete
    4. I agree with Oliver in the three decisions. Good job!

    6. 62' PLAY ON absolutely OK in my opinion if not the correct decision, VAR would have had more troubles, I think, in supporting a possible penalty call.

66' Tricky situation, I think that in Italy this would have been penalty in all cases, but for sure you can support the choice by VAR. However, whistling it wouldn't have been a mistake.

74' I wouldn't have whistled this. Technically it can be a penalty indeed, and observer must support, also, these are situations in which it is impossible for you to spot what really happens. In my opinion everything is made by attacker who sees that defender is there and goes towards him without any responsibility for the latter. What is punished is merely the "position" of the leg there, thank to that, the attacker creates a penalty for him. For sure never a clear penalty for me, but at the same time to be accepted by an observer.
