I predict a Senegal player will get Red Carded
ReplyDeleteFirst 25 mins the calmest game of all 3 so far...
ReplyDeleteVery different from last EURO when black kit for referees was used only twice during whole tournament, here black in all three first matches
ReplyDeleteInteresting.
DeleteAm I the only one who doesn't like referee kits for the WC? That collar is just terrible
And it looks like it's going to stay that way.
DeleteI see Al-Jassim later wearing the black uniform in USA-WAL
I don't know if this was posted here before but the colours are already decided for the group stage. I don't have info on which specific match but the black one will be used 22 times, the red 10 times, the yellow 8 times, the blue 6 times and the purple twice.
DeleteWhere did you see that information?
DeleteI'm interested
I've read it in an article published by German refereeing experts "Collinas Erben".
Deletehttps://www.n-tv.de/sport/fussball/collinas_erben/Warum-weibliche-Schiris-erstmals-eine-Maenner-WM-leiten-article23730317.html
That's indeed quite a change compared to previous tournaments.
DeleteMain reason probably is less black GK kits?
What a boring game, still outstanding to stay awake while watching...
ReplyDeleteA lot less to do, and a much more passive, hands-off style from Sampaio than we've seen in the other two games. I think at 41' there should have been more urgency: a foul by Netherlands, but he delays the whistle so long even after it was already clear that Senegal would not retain the ball, which led to a hard "foul" by the Senegalese player just as Sampaio blew the whistle. Then Sampaio completely ignored this second foul. So far it's not an issue because the game is so relatively easy, but I'm not as convinced by him as his colleagues so far.
ReplyDeleteAnd another delayed whistle on 66' for an obvious foul. Unconvincing refereeing from this ref imo.
DeleteIt was no foul in my opinion. Minimum contact. Maybe a handball after that, so correct freekick, but delaying whistle absolut understandable as netherlands could have scored a goal
DeleteYou must delay whistle in situations like that one.
DeleteLiking what I'm seeing. Maybe more relaxed style than in the games before. (Might be cause the low intensity of the game so far). Just my opinion as a person who doesn't know so much, but this has been the most clinical performance so far.
ReplyDeleteNot too much going on, but as already mentioned some (too) late whistles without a good reason to delay. Now it was after an attacking Dutch push in the Senegalese penalty area (67.)
ReplyDeleteOn the contrary: very good alertness to delay for a potential goal, so VAR could become involved if necessary. On field foul decision was correct.
DeleteCould be valid in case of for example a debatable handball, or a defender going down after a minimal tripping offence, but after a rather clear push (with minimal risk of assessing the situation clearly wrong) there’s no need to delay the whistle. We cannot (and should not) delay the whistle for each and every offensive foul IMO.
DeleteI disagree. Not a clear initial foul for me, after that, clear handball.
DeleteWell, it is clear that Collina "washed the head" of referees with added time, that's more than an instruction or guideline, I think he threatened them :D
ReplyDeleteAll officials will easily achieve the sufficiency in this match (7 - 7 - 7 - III) - sth a bit more detailed will follow in a bit (excellent compensation for lost time but it doesn't help my nap schedule inbetween the matches! :D).
ReplyDeleteWilton Sampaio is a very good referee. Excellent judgement and fitness, plus really like his soberness.
ReplyDeleteIt would be nice to add some empathy for the players.
ReplyDeleteYou're absolutely right, his persona on the field is a little arrogant. It's been always like this, though. He improved a lot over the years.
DeleteFor me a good performance in a match that was not really challenging (also due to good officiating!). Referee made a very concentrated impression throughout and appears ready for the next task.
ReplyDelete+
Concentrated and firm impression
Consistent foul detection
Preventiveness in player-to-player conflicts
Compensation of time lost
-
Excessive whistle use
Mendy YC (90+4') was harsh for me.
+1
DeleteGood performance in a not so challenging match IMO. Consistent foul detection, good disciplinary line, excellent lost time compensation again. He stayed pretty much in the background, but stepped out and showed nice prevention skills when the need arose during the final stages of the match. Maybe I'm wrong, but I "felt" a minimal amount of insecurity from him in the 1H, which disappeared as the match went by. A fully decent performance, IMO.
ReplyDeleteAnalysis
ReplyDeleteThe first game played between roughly ‘even’ teams at Qatar 2022 and the third straight which was overall well-refereed by the Brazilian crew. Some pointers:
- Much discussion about ‘delayed whistles’ and indeed there were quite a few by Sampaio in this game, for different reasons: the one at 67’ was good (you could see him ready to blow then waiting), 41’ (slightly exaggerated but can easily accept delayed whistle) but also some others such as 37’ which could come under the heading of “hesistancy”.
- Disciplinary was fine. 31’ was a good no card, but the optimal ‘card-opener’ actually came a few mins before the first booking - Koulibaly got impatient and clattered through the back of Bergwijn at 52’. Orsato gave an excellent YC y’day under this heading and it would have set the tone as the match started to get more edgy in the 2H. The added time cautions were credible and mandatory respectively.
- Lde mentioned “empathy”, and I think this is an interesting term for this performance. I think that Sampaio really failed to earn the players “empathy” in this match: instead of really ‘managing the game’, he just acted distantly and blew his whistle many times in order to stay in control (you could feel the game was ‘on edge’, such as two DtR scenes in 78’). He just seemed to want to do everything ‘quickly’, and try to avoid interacting with players/using personality as much as possible. Actually, he reminded me of Massa in this regard, rather just trying to ’survive’ the game and not more.
- Linesmen were sound, no.2 Pires stood out to me, his demeanour reminded me quite a lot of two very top ARs, Schiemann (now retired :)) and Ristić :).
- This was an interesting incident, what do you think?

-> Overall Sampaio’s crew did well and enough to qualify for a second appmnt, but this match ascertained my view that the Brazilian is not ‘at the top’.

Delete+1. Empathy is indeed his biggest problem, it has always been.
ReplyDeleteSampaio and Claus are quality refs who officiate in one of the best football leagues in the world. Both are absolutely reliable options and they will be extremely useful for hot matches involving European powerhouses.
ReplyDeleteAbout Sampaio's personality: it is not lack of empathy; it is authority instead and it works out really well to control frantic games.
