  1. These appointments of 4th officials make me think... why did they send a 2nd AR with these guys if they were only meant to be support officials? Have the 2nd ARs like Shi Xiang been appointed to anything? Will they be?

    1. Because everything can happen and all referees can get a game, FIFA decided to have all options available. Injures, poor performances, and so on... that's good also for them, not considered only as reserve referee from the beginning.

  2. Can anyone explain why Orsato got his second appointment before Makkelie, Taylor and Oliver did? Apparently the judgement by Collina and Busacca is that those three referees do not have what it takes to ref this big game. Otherwise, why wouldn't they balance these appointments a bit better. Or, one can't help but wonder, does his nationality play a big part? Really, I'm curious?

    1. Also in other big tournaments we saw second appointments before the first one for other referees, it's normal, it belongs to the plans made by committee.

    2. Fair enough to both of you. But it does make me really curious when we will see Makkelie and Taylor and in which matches. But still, some very big ones coming up. Thanks for sharing your ideas

  3. Italian Referee Chief, Italian referee is first with two big assignments. Coincidence...?

  4. Argentina loves Italian refs. It's been pretty clear over the years.

  5. Orsato: absolutely deserved after what I think it was the best performance from all MD1 referees. Big game for him, nevertheless, I still think no chances for the final, so maybe after that, in case of further very good game, he will get another sonorous assignment in KO stage as last reward.

Siebert: appointment based on his form, I think Tunisia - Australia as check up is a reasonable choice, he will have to pay attention to Tunisia's approach, indeed the game against Denmark showed that they can be difficult to handle.

Sampaio: after Saudi Arabia win on MD1, clearly this game became by far more important, and the Brazilian deserved it. Maybe he is the preselected for getting more between the two Brazilians.

Marciniak: "classic" European game for him, quite important for qualification, just to start, waiting for something bigger in case on MD3.

  6. The surprise is the 2nd time for Orsato so early (and Sampaio). Both games are very crucial. First, for ARG-MEX (a win or die game) an UEFA referee was expected. Personally, I expected Lahoz due to common language. I think that FIFA for some reasons did not trust him for this match and preferred a more "secured" solution. For Sampaio is different. His country BRA will go further in the WC and there the choices for him will be limited. So, the Commitee gives more opportunities in this stage.
