  1. Excellent positioning and offside flag by AR2 for disallowing a goal.

  2. Barton's facial expressions are really excellent today :).

  3. I'm really sorry for the missed offside at the end and this was a very blatant mistake, otherwise excellent performance by full crew in this first half.

  4. Ironic remark on Austrian tv: AR1 didn't raise his flag in min 45+3 for offside, because the flag could be too multicolored for FIFA ...

  5. Is there an argument for a dive from the German player just before the contact for the penalty? Or is it simply a loss of balance?

  6. That VAR offside intervention is a case that shows why taking five minutes to produce a broadcast graphic is problematic. First, any incident in the final minutes of a half won't have an image before many broadcasters cut off for half-time adverts, and this would be even more probelematic at the end of a second-half. Also, the ball seemed to be ahead of the second-last defender, so I'm assuming that if a graphic is eventually shown, it'll be the more old-style 'lines' image, unless Fifa have thought of this more than Uefa had.

  7. Honestly, I still find it strange how it takes so long for a decision even with SAOT.
Also I'm not sure if I understood that correctly but I believe the German commentator mentioned that there are only 8 cameras in operation. I hope VAR has more available.

  8. Now, 56', another very wrong offside flag, this time by AR2, losing credit after disallowed goal in first half.

  9. I have to admit, Barton has shown much better than I expected, he's really bringing it for this big tournament. He looks like an absolute natural up there, completely different from the last time I watched him in CCL. The only meaningful critique is his assistant's missed offside calls and the rather slow checks of Vigliano.

    1. I agree, a very, very good performance, even more based on the expectations for him and the fact that this game could have been ready already as a big one for the referee from El Salvador. Showed to be able to handle the tie, without real troubles, and his body language, despite of being particular, was convincing (in my opinion, totally different from Al Jassim). This game was not really challenging at the very high level, but surely not easy. He was convinced about his decisions.
Really sorry for assistant referees mistakes that can put in bad light some apects of this convincing display.
Nevertheless, knowing Collina, he will able to split the two arguments.
Right now a penalty appeal by Germany but for me nothing.

  10. A bit chaotic management on the german freekick on 90+7'. Excessive whistle usage and a lot of gestures to a lot of different places

    1. I think he got a little bit carried away by the emotions and things at stake in those ultimate moments. But well done!

  11. I really hope Barton gets another match, he's definitely earned it. Really good performance. He was visibly enjoying himself, and every time he (or Martinez) interacted with players and coaches his positive attitude was contagious.

  12. Wow! Very cool, calm and of course have a laugh always in his face. Good foul detection with no usage of card still control of game!

  13. I agree with the majority here: a very good performance by Barton in a pretty fair match. Good foul detection, clear and very convincing body language, all KMIs correctly solved. Unfortunately a bad miss by AR1 at the end of the 1H, requiring a VAR intervention for offside, also another mistake by AR2 with wrong offside in 56', however both of them also had some pretty nice decisions (e.g. onside for the second goal of Japan for AR1). Convincing display for me today.

  14. Analysis

    Key Match Incidents:

    31' Penalty given to Germany:

Good decision by Barton, at first the attacker lost balance, then get back on his feet and got hit quite clearly by the Japanese GK with his knee. Instant whistle, good alertness.

    90+3' Possible penalty to Germany:

Another correct call from the referee, the German initiates the contact with the Japanese, trying to win a spot-kick. I would even argue a defensive freekick was the optimal decision.

    Balance:

In a game played by two well-behaved and football-focused team, the official from El Salvador had a very good afternoon. He simply whistled what was in front of him, putting himself at the benefit of the game. Players visibly respected and trusted him a lot to lead the match, he was in absolute control.

He ended up without cards, and quite credibly so: the only possible YC was at 36', where he chose to give a verbal warning after a good advantage played, that was a sensible choice.

The most positive aspect of his officiating was his - really excellent - body language toolbox: facial expressions, mimics, gestures.
All were quite unique and sophisticated, you could feel that Barton was sincerely reacting.

His presentation was great as well: always looked highly-motivated, very solid dynamic running style. Maybe his use of whistle was a bit excessive at times (lot of choppy tones, see last free kick of the game), but nothing serious.

Barton remained focused until full-time, especially in the last fifteen minutes when he correclty rejected several penalty appeals
(86',88',90+3'). He never lost motivation, that must be said.

AR1 had a poor mistake by allowing a German goal in 45+4' and was corrected by VAR.
AR2 will surely regret his phantom offside call in 55', who spoilt a very good performance (correct disallowed goal in 8', correct offsides in 55' and 63', excellent onside in 71')

According to performance principle, Barton must be appointed again in this WC. I don't believe his ARs mistake will cost him his much-deserved second game.

    Marks: 7 - 5 - 6 - III

  15. Barton rising to the occasion in a big test. Great personality given his age.
