World Cup 2022 - Referee appointments for Wednesday 30/Nov

FIFA has decided to break the confederations rule by appointing Danny Makkelie in Poland - Argentina, decisive game in group C. The Dutch will officiate his second game at WC only a few days after his first appearance. The complex scenario in the group was probably the reason for this delay of appointments. To follow, Conger from NZL will have his debut in Tunisia - France, game that can be important only for African side, but the challenge for qualifying is extremely difficult for them. 2. What is the point of bringing up a decision from 8 years ago?

      Delete
    3. I'll remind you that 8 years after ruling that a certain Frank Lampard shot had not crossed a certain goal line in Bloemfontein, Mauricio Espinosa officiated the World Cup semifinal. Let the past stay in the past.

    4. To bring together both That Guy and Smala's comments - Çakir would have had FRABEL and Cunha CROENG if not for the Espinosa factor, but FIFA switched the two appmnts around... back then Rule also replaced an (injured?) Fijian, Kumar, iirc.

Baaaad mistake though, I understand BiHRef! :)

    5. @mikael Could you explain this about the SF assignments in WC18 please?

    6. Diego - tbh the story isn't that big/detailed, FIFA had Çakir for the first semifinal and Cunha for the second, but switched them around to avoid the re-pairing of Espinosa with England after WC2010. It was no problem for FIFA (obviously! :D), but they didn't want to uncessarily increase the pressure/attention on Uruguayan crew before their game started.

  4. Big, big match for Oliver.

Argentina, as alawys, with special treatment, Collina even breaking confed neutrality rule in group stage.
    Too bad.
We'll see if it was done for some special reason.

  5. Good vote of confidence for Oliver to get this important match. I think he earned it after his performance yesterday 0

  6. It is safe to say that the problematic appointment was Poland-Argentina. Someone from the committee insisted for a top, top, fully trusted referee for this game: Makkelie is certainly one of them, others disagreed with this because of the unwritten confederation rule. It is obvious that the original referee for this game was changed, my guesses are Beath or Gomes, however I think Gomes showed a good performance and I would have given to him this game, this was also my prediction in our game. But, I don`t understand what took them so long to reach an agreement, they had all day long.

    1. Beath was in charge of Poland vs Mexico.

    2. Oh, yes. But Gomes? He seemed like a reliable option.

    3. Gomes was the perfect match-up for POL-ARG. But you know... Argentina seems to have a hidden seat in FIFA's refereeing committee.

  7. So we have easily the reasons for the delay of appointments, as also reported by Arbitro Internacional. The focus was on POL - ARG.
The scores of this group on previous matchdays complicated the work by committee, it is now clear. In addition, not easy to break the confederations rule after almost the whole group stage with it. One could even criticize this management, nevertheless this choice was expected to happen, sooner or later. Maybe somebody wanted still to resist...
Add to that, the fact that Makkelie has officiated only yesterday and you can fully understand how it was difficult for committee to manage everything. It seems as no other options were available for this game and committee wanted to assign the possible best referee.
In normal conditions, Conger could have handled Saudi Arabia if not important for the qualification.
As I expected, Ghorbal with another game and an important one for qualification. I think the game is OK for him, but he will have to do definitely better than the previous game.
Conger with a debut in a game that is very similar to NED - QAT with Gassama.
Michael Oliver with the decisive Saudi Arabia - Mexico.

  8. I think, the most expectable 8 remaining names in the group stage now are: Claus, Gomes, Marciniak, Rapallini, Siebert, Taylor, Tello, Valenzuela
Other candidates are: Al-Jassim, Matonte, Orsato.
Everybody else is a lot less likely, I believe.

My current idea for Thursday would be
    CRO-BEL: Marciniak
    CAN-MAR: Valenzuela
    JPN-ESP: Claus
    CRC-GER: Gomes

    1. Я имел ввиду, когда его вернут на международную арену. Он совсем не виноват в том, что происходит. Как и большинство россиян

    2. I guess Karasev & the rest of Russian FIFA referees might return when Russia withdraws its troops from (mainland) Ukraine :)

It's not the first case of a referee who had to cope with international sanctions though. Yugoslav/Serbian referee Zoran Petrović (who attended 1986 & 1990 WCs) refereed 1992 UEFA Cup Final 2nd shortly before sanctions on Yugoslavia were approved by UNSC. At 40 yo his international career was over due to political reasons and moved to Japan to continue his refereeing career.

    1. Let me say first that I don't know anything about internal politics in FIFA at the moment, but I have heard about numerous times in the past when Argentina rejected non-European referees in favour of Europeans at the World Cup (except the English of course). From Klein in 78 to Irmatov in 2014 (?). So it's possible that European appointments are seen as a positive by Argentina. Having said that, I agree that breaking confed neutrality does not seem too necessary here.

  12. Regarding dating, several important points:

-As we all know, the "thorn in the shoe" for Collina was POL-ARG. Personally, I don't like that the rule was broken, I don't doubt Makkelie's ability, but it could be avoided.
-Van Boekel returns as VAR for an ARG game...I didn't expect it

-Mukansanga with his 2nd game or 4th referee, I don't like something... So many appointments for Yamashita and only 2 for Mukansanga????
    And again with France???
Mishandling by the committee, I hope to see her in future games.
I wait for Frappart on CAM-BRA

    -Conger expected, unfortunately.

-Ghorbal with a new opportunity and I hope he takes advantage of it (I think he won't do badly)

    My latest predictions:
    ESP-JPN: Rapallini/Ortega (Bascuñan)
    CRC-GER: Al Jassim/Mukansaga (Al Marri*)
    CRO-BEL: Marciniak/Matonte (Kwiatkowski)
    CAN-MAR: Valenzuela/Tello (Soto)
    SRB-SUI: Taylor/N'Diaye (Kwiatkowski)
    CMR-BRA: Frappart/Yamashita (Millot)
    GHA-URU: Beath/Ning (Evans)
    KOR-POR: Gomes/Martinez (Fischer)

  13. This rule broken os completely ridiculous. An European refereeing a game with an European against a South american is more than temerary, is unacceptable, even been Makkelie, when is not necessary. Preserve him. If, in the other hand, had been assigned Velenzuela, Claus, Sampaio or Ortega? I'm sure that europress would be doing a big noise!!! There was good referees options like Mohamed, Barton, Gassama, Conger or Elfath to be charge of this match

  14. Есть ли шанс у Сергея Карасева из России вернуться в судейство? Это топ арбитр в последнее время он хорошо поработал. Хочется узнать мнение экспертов

  15. In my opinion the last 8 names for GS are among: Marciniak, Rapallini, Siebert, Gomes, Valenzuela, Taylor, Al Jassim, Claus and Matonte.
One of them should stay out, the least likely among them could be Matonte. To follow, if not him, Claus. The rest of names is quite expected if you ask me, even Valenzuela after his good performance in a big game.
I must say that so far, about all the names we discussed on the blog, committee has agreed. Unless we will see again them (very difficult) it seems as indeed Beath, Escobar, Sikazwe and Elfath have been too poor to get a second assignment.
Ghorbal could have followed them but only in terms of disciplinary control, no major issues and excellent call by AR2, this was reason for getting another game + the trust by committee. I'm sure he is now aware he has to do better.

    2. @Chefren: I agree, with one point: I would be not surprise, If Al Jassim would stay out, not everyone was satisfied with his performance in USA-Wales, I personally think he did a decent job there.
If you ask me about breaking the confederations rule, I am not happy, but I understand, that FIFA wants an excellent referee for this game.

    3. With five all-European and all-non-European games remaining but just three UEFA referees who are waiting for their second appointment, I would not be surprised to see Orsato in a third (crucial) group stage game (and then maybe directly in a semi-final).

  18. So, it's still three games with european referees in G and H. I guess Taylor will get Switzerland - Serbia and Siebert to Brazil - Cameroon or Ghana vs Uruguay. i don't know who could be the third one. Maybe Orsato for a third in a row? Or maybe a surprise referee at Brazil game. To make a joke, maybe Colina are going to call Cakir for the remaining games.

  19. Biggest surprise in this set of appointments for me is not Makkelie but Ghorbal. I was not at all impressed with his performance in Ecuador-Netherlands and now he is assigned to a deciding match for advancing to knock-outs. He will have to do a whole lot better. If they wanted to assign an African referee here, why not Gomes, who did substantially better.

About the Makkelie appointment. Appointing a UEFA referee here was the only right thing to do and Makkelie and Oliver were really the only two options. Gomes and Al Jassim just not experienced enough and would be way too big of a risk. And I would prefer Makkelie over Valenzuela or Claus or Matonte in this big match all day long.

  21. I wonder who will be the Uefa referees, who also will be at the next World cup, and are present in Qatar. So, after me, they are Turpin, Makkelie, Oliver, maybe Kovacs, who will be 42, Siebert. And if he get to field I'm worried about Hategan, because in 2026, he will be 46 years. So, only choice for him is Euro 2024.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Orsato is 47 years old and he is in this World Cup, being over 45 is no longer relevant (in my opinion).

      Delete
    2. I assume that FIFA could also focus on developing Stéphanie Frappart within the next four years by appointing her for FIFA (male) tournaments like (male) Olympic games. The aim should be to see a female referee handling a male World Cup game in four years.

      Delete
    3. Age will not be a problem for Hațegan, if he comes back. But Romania is a country too small to have 2 referees at WC. If Kovacs can't be trusted with one game in the year he officiated UCL semifinal(briliant performance in that game!) and the UECL final... Screw politics.

      Delete
    4. I think that Orsato is here, because he is the best italian referee from the moment, and is a huge gap between him and the others. Massa and Mariani are over or at least 40 years. And about Hategan, I'm not worried about his age, I'm worried about his health condition. And the next number one for me, after Hategan and Kovacs, in romanian league, will be Horatiu Fesnic, and also I wait for Kovacs little brother, who was promoted this year, in the first sqaud of the referees.

      Delete
  22. I was very surprised at the Oliver appointment. Him being a huge Newcastle United fan, living in the city and Saudi Arabia's massive investment is his Team.

Although there's no doubt about his integrity...purely for face I thought FIFA might have kept him away from the Saudis.
