Quite intense and hectic first 20 minutes. Many duels to assess but Siebert is doing a good job so far imo. But definitely feels like a game that can boil over quickly if he starts to get only a few foul calls wrong.

ReplyDeleteI make that at least 5 handballs called in the first less than 30 minutes of the game. That seems like a lot.

DeleteI actually thought this was managed really well. Siebert went to talk to the player on the bench and then made him apologize to the Australian player. Way better than just dishing out a YC. (Of course YC would have still been possible)
DeleteThe ball made contact with the player's head. No replay really showed the full context; I think Siebert is arguing that it wasn't thrown at the downed player on purpose, but I have a hard time seeing that as not even a yellow card based upon what we saw. The management was fine. That said I don't think there was any need to make the Australian player run all the way over to shake hands.

ReplyDeleteI've never been fully sold on Siebert previously, but the game management in this first half has been excellent!
ReplyDeleteMaybe some smaller decisions that could be discussed but I think still a pretty good and satisfying performance from Siebert in the first half. He has indeed done important homework on his game managment!

ReplyDeleteQuite a firm and concentrated impression by Siebert, IMO. The only really mandatory YC was in 26' and he gave it correctly. 2-3 minor calls that maybe went wrong (the foul on AUS GK in 41' being definitely wrong), but nothing too important, I would say.
ReplyDeleteI am completely on the side of those arguing that the situation with the bench in 31' has been solved excellently. We have no proof that the ball was thrown at the AUS player's head on purpose. Quite the contrary, it all felt like a coincidence, and I think that a friendly chat those two players had at the end of the 1H proves that. Giving a YC in such a situation seems unfair and would put unnecessary pressure on the referee for the remainder of the match.

DeleteBelow average performance in a match without any key incidents so far. He tripped tripped the player marking Aus nr 17 who later scored. Maybe accidental but with better positioning he could avoid that.
ReplyDeleteTerrible foul detection, safe refereeing, whistling everytime a defender/goalkeeper falls in PK area. No real acceptance by the players on the pitch, small protests almost after every foul whistled or not whistled. Annoying constant whistling three or four times.
Some other referees would have been destroyed for this performance in this blog.
The only positive thing is handling the thrown ball from the bench in the first half.
I think this is a little harsh but I agree with this more than with some of the more complimentary comments. Easy game with well-behaved teams and not a whole lot to deal with. Some small mistakes (positioning leading to the goal blocking a Tunisian player, pretty bad foul decision at 41' that stopped an attack). His body language isn't very convincing to me. Not too much for him to do, easy game as the committee probably expected.

DeleteIm not a fan of Siebert but well done. Full acceptance by pkayers and full control. Very good big picture. Minor errors with no influence ob the fame. No VAR needed.
I must confess that I have never quite understood Sieberts progress beyond UEFA First Category, but I was astonished at the referee's passive positioning today. Stuck in the middle of the pitch, he was far away when play was on the flanks and got in the way when the ball was played through the middle (eg 1-0). I am sure that Germany has better referees than Siebert.

ReplyDelete1. If it's up to those commenting in this blog, this WC would have a very high number of YCs and very likely players already in danger of suspension. We have the world's best match officials at this tournament. These officials have a range of personal styles and approaches. However, they can all more than manage things without immediately reaching into their pockets.
2. Speaking of the world's best match officials. The majority are painted quite poorly by the armchair comments made here. Some of those comments are based on a very short-sighted and/or poor understanding of refereeing.
Totally agree dear friend Ref Al. I already read each comment that seems to me basketball instead football. If depends of these comments all games of this WC will be fully of PKs or expulsions. We need remember that FIFA's priority consider the spetacle, not a sttoped game!

Delete1) Referees don't "give out" cards. Players "EARN" them with "their actions". We as referees oblige them by enforcing the LOTG. The "goons" who go out to make the game messy are not the ones who the fans go to see.

I totally agree. A missed freekick here a wrong throw in there... totally unimportant. No one has 100% correct decisions. The big decisions must be correct. No one talks about the ref. The best compliment for a ref.

ReplyDeleteDaniel Siebert navigated through the game well, focusing on the invidual assessment of the several incidents, and showing mandatory cards only.
Three fully corrects YCs issued in 26'(charging),64'(SPA- holding)
and 90+3' (SPA handling). In fact, there have been plenty of situations where a card was possible as well (31',35',39',50',51',58',62'), but the German didn't reached his pocket.
This area wasn't quite optimally handled in my eyes, especially with the rather high amount of borderline challenges sorted by Australian players, who got away, Siebert allowed them too much, I believe.
Foul detection was quite a strong suit for the German, besides some FKs missed in 22',30',38' and 90+6' coupled with a wrong FK in 41' (a smart whistle to avoid any trouble rather than a detection failure, if you ask me :) ), he was sharp in assessing the high number of duels he faced.
Everything went fine on a presence level: excellent management of accidental ball kicking in 31', good reaction in 43' after a FK. Strong gestures and body language as well.
AR1 had a very calm afternoon, and AR2 only missed a blatant handball right before him at the very end of the game
A decent job by Siebert and his team; they can hope for a second appointment in this GS.
