  2. Surely also worth noting that Gonzalez is only AVAR for his compatriot even though he has been used as main VAR before in this WC. Could this also indicate that they weren't happy with his performance as VAR in ENG-IRN?
But maybe I'm just overthinking this :D

    1. Darn, in my predictions I had Turpin on that game right until the very end when I was trying to get all the South Americans a second game XD

    1. Mateu gets USA-Iran.

All 3 'KO games' on Tuesday go to UEFA referees.

    2. Well deserved for Mateu Lahoz! Another big moment (&2020 CL final) for him in his outstanding career. Congratulations!

    3. Sadly, politics will always play a part. Embarrassing and disgraceful!

    4. I'm talking about Vincic, of course.

  6. Still no offside graphics for situation before goal. On first sight it looked offside

  7. Good offside flag by AR1 disallowing Croatia‘s goal.

  8. Very fit referee, impressive so far

    1. That comment was echoed by many broadcasters. He's definitely not on the Jon Moss, Alan Wiley, or Phil Dowd training regiment. LOL

  9. Excellent match for refereeing. Good environment, players dedicated to fair play, high level on disputes. Matonte will have a good job

    1. Dont know about fairplay,we saw some small altercations between Modric and Laryea ,Perisic and Buchanan.

But I agree,no rough fouls and both teams are playing to score more.

  10. 42' foul in Croatian defensive half and spot of ball by Croatian player was about three yards towards the middle of the field from the place of the foul. Quick kick led to breakaway and eventual Croatian goal. Not something anyone would notice, but wrong spot of ball had important consequence.

    1. And seemed to be deliberate spotting of ball away from the crowd near the place of the foul.

    1. Not enough force IMO, but very petty and stupid from the player.

    2. Force far too low. Would have been VC as there was no attempt to play ball.

    3. I would agree with smala017 and Ref Al, but still a dirty move by the offender there. I would be glad if such moves were considered to be RC worthy, but YC is probably the expected decision here.

    4. If it would have been more of "stepping down on" instead of the glancing blow that it was. We would probably be debating a pretty clear Red Card for SFP. That type of action seriously endangers the physical well-being of a player.

  12. Matonte does well in a match without bigger issues so far, clear line, good foul detection, impressive physics.

    1. Did we all see how quickly he handled that?
Yellow for you and yellow for you and done!
Very different than Elfath's center-of-attention approach in GHA-POR.
Glad that Matonte didn't attend the "PRO Referee" academy to become an Actor/Referee. Or it would have been endless whistling, ordering players to come here, ordering other players to go away.

    2. Quickly and efficiently. Optimally for that specific situation IMO.

  15. A good performance by Matonte for me. Definitely a referee with "European" optics, calm and composed, with a clear (and optimal) line in foul detection and disciplinary aspect, IMO. All mandatory YCs were correctly issued for my taste. He showed a good concentration level with nice prevention of a potential altercation in 40' and solved one escalation optimally (a YC for both players). As Andrasch correctly stated above, excellent fitness level.

Both AR's with a nice onside/offside decision each, along with some "regular" ones.

    1. "European" optics"???
South American referees can't have a "style" without it being compared to their European counterparts?
Good quality referees exist on all continents.

    2. Of course they can and of course they exist, that's why I used quotation marks.

Don't worry, I actually love South American referees and their style. Matonte's style feels a bit different, slightly more similar to us here in Europe, he reminds me of Ricci somehow. And I can assure you I'm still somewhat of an outcast to my fellow Croatians for trying to defend Pitana after the last WC. Sorry if the comment felt belittling or inappropriate.

    3. No offense taken, and I hope that my comment didn't offend you either. I realize that on the "blog" we on this side of the world are outnumbered by those in Europe. Certain comments read as if those people don't realize that there good referees outside of Europe. At times I'm bothered by those who are naïve and respond. Which I probably shouldn't.

    4. Don't worry, my friend, your comment was perfectly decent. And if you ever need some further clarification about any of my statements in the future, I'll be happy to respond. It's always nice to have a decent and polite discussion, that's why we're here.

    5. Thats why I am so sad about Ma Ning not getting a real chance, as it looks like. Saw him twice and liked him very much!

  16. Analysis

    Key match incidents:

02' - CAN goal scored after a good onside call in APP by AR2.

26' - CRO goal correctly disallowed for offside after good cooperation and delayed offside call by both REF and AR1.

36' - CRO goal scored after a good onside call by AR1.

52' - Possible red card for violent conduct. 11CAN decides to stop a promising attack of opponents by making a studs challenge from behind of 20CRO running with the ball. In my personal opinion, such studs attacks from behind without a chance to play the ball should ALWAYS result in a red card being shown for violent conduct. However, we know current trends to assess the amount of force also in such 'assault' incidents and it was quite low + the contact was not a full one, to be fair. By the way, it's always funny to see asking for common sense when they demand leniency and to be extremely by the book when they demand the same leniency in other incidents where common sense would prompt a 100% red card... But as a referee you can only do what they want, so most likely keeping 22 players on the pitch (applying last years' instructions) was more important than caring for safety of the players -> supportable (for FIFA maybe even fully correct) YC decision.

75' - Penalty area incident: holding. After a good play-on call (CAN player's theatrical simulation of being stroke in the face) 4CAN holds back 13CRO in the penalty area. Correct play-on decision as, although the initial short holding move was maybe decisive for the action, 13CRO continued his running and fell down after an attempt to get in physical contact with his opponent / keep his balance. Not enough for a penalty being given.

    Overview:

It wasn't a challenging game for the young Uruguayan who delivered an expected level performance by staying in the background, allowing some physical play and not falling for too exaggerated reactions by CAN players.

Nonetheless, he also showed the weakness we knew about - not being able to connect with players.

    See the compilation:
    https://streamable.com/mgeyi4

Three conflicts between players occurred (I would say his lack of verbal communication played a part in it) in 38', 40' and 90' and it was just strange to see a referee not being even interested in calming them down (38', good reaction of AR2) and instead yelling at them (40', it was the worst) after finally being forced to show cautions (90'). Just no interest in the incidents not happening again.

One has to mention a very good job by assistant referees who were focused through the whole game and took big decisions correctly.

    Marks:
    Andrés Matonte - 7
    Nicolás Tarán - 8
    Martín Soppi - 8
    Mauro Vigliano - III

  17. Canadian referee here, and I agree 100% that the referee deserves credit for filtering through the nonsensical theatrics that our players were attempting to deceive him. It was clear that when things started to go downhill for Canada, they started looking to the referee to bail them out. Despite the early goal, we were mostly in over our heads in this match, and credit to the officials for their contribution to a fair outcome.
