  1. One would think this should be a formality for Turpin. Game and teams are well within his skill set

  2. Is Turpin wearing his usual rolled up long sleeves? :D

  3. Very high-energy and physical start to this game, but Turpin happy to stay out of the way as every challenge has been an honest one so far. Can’t imagine it’ll stay that way, so in interested to see how his approach adapts when the game changes.

  4. Turpin decided to stay in the background, not issuing a single caution after borderline challenges at 02', 04', 06', 21' and 45'. He set the tone early in the game by allowing some physical challenges and players accepted that. One has to say that he brilliantly communicates with players - quiet small talks rather than public warnings.

    1. Again in 54': I do think this one should have been a caution to a Korean player, but Turpin again stays in the background in what has been a surprisingly football-focused game.

(As I'm typing this) 56' Another bad challenge, this time from URU #22. Now Turpin correctly shows yellow after a calm chat. A steady crescendo in the severity of challenges and here Turpin draws the line in the sand at this point.

    3. I wonder if he got help from Kovacs on that one, or if he reasoned it slowly (like Ramos) due to the removal of the boot.

  8. Incorrect YC IMO in 87', not sure you could classify that as a reckless elbow. Also looked like a missed foul on 88' but didn't see a replay and Turpin had a good view of it but didn't look like he got any of the ball

    1. And now a wrongly awarded free kick on 90+7'. Poor end to the match for Turpin in an otherwise solid performance

    2. 87' was a totally correct YC. Player even looked back to see where is the opponent and it was absolutely reckless use of arm, hitting the throat of the player from Uruguay.
Brilliant performance, one of the best of the tournament so far in rather simple game, but I think he contributed to that with his approach. Totally flawless, and his physical condition is really on top!

    3. Was a good refereeing performance from Turpin and I do think he's a great official but I do think he tailed off towards the end, couple of mistakes at the end including one which stopped a possible promising attack for Uruguay at 90+7'

  9. Wrong freekick ag URU in the end, Turpin saw an offensive foul which did not happen, but all in all a good performance in a game, which was much less challenging than expected. Brilliant communication, rather good foul detection - full acceptanceby the players, the typical Turpin.

    1. Agree with you, good performance overall. I would also highlight the YC given against Uruguay in 56' as well timed to calm things down when the match started to heat up. And, as you perfectly said, very good communication, fully effective in this game.

  10. I personally didn't like Turpin's performance. For my liking and based on what we've seen from most referees so far. He allowed an overly physical style of play. A style that inadvertently favored Uruguay. As the Uruguayans favor a chippy, dirty, more physical game. On the other hand, the Koreans much like the Japanese play fairly and honestly. But they can only play this way for so long. Especially if the referee is allowing them to get fouled continuously without anything being called. Of course, this leads to retaliatory fouls.

  11. Analysis

    Report about Turpin's performance:

It seems that he wanted to prove a point to some Law5 users ;) - many, many play on calls by Clément Turpin today! I made a montage here:

As ESR stated, this generous approach was accepted by the players today and I think it worked well for this match.

I included a foul call at the end of the sequence, the one talked about here (+97’), and the decision to blow up seems a rather doubtful one. However, GOOD in this department overall.

    - - on the cards? - -

Of more concern was disciplinary control however, where the Frenchman appeared quite hesitant to ’take the initiative’ in KORURU. There were no tactical mistakes in the 1H, but the non-caution at 54’ after a reckless tackle was an error. He wasn’t quite convinced about the 57’ booking either - it seems the original plan was to issue a verbal warning. The latter foul was very reckless so no card would have been hard to accept. Sanction at 88’ (elbowing) was well-seen.

    - - (potential) korea complaints - -

Korea Republic appealed for a penalty in this scene at 53’ (Turpin’s reaction against mobbing was fantastic(!) btw), and indeed Brisard checked it for some amount of time before giving his team leader the all-clear.

    What do you think?

Overall the whole French trio performed satisfyingly in a normal-level match.
