Great yellow card by Taylor for an off-the-ball incident in the 21st minute, I'm not sure if Taylor saw that himself or if another match official helped him out. If the former, great awareness, if the latter, great teamwork!

ReplyDeleteThe Law recently changed such that "accidental handball that leads to a goal" is no longer punished if a teammate scores the goal. It is only applicable if the player himself who handles the ball immediately scores a goal. Since that is not the case, the handball needs to be assessed just like any other handball decision anywhere on the field: Was it deliberate? And was the arm making the body unnaturally bigger? Neither is the case, therefore there is no handball offense.

DeleteMakkelie did the same yesterday, blew 15s before the allotted time. Perhaps the ref's watch is synced different to the scoreboard. Plus the time it would take for the corner to be taken, would mean it would go over the time from the injury. Imagine the uproar if Ghana scored

A bit of a skirmish in the end over the corner kick but, come on, South Korea had more 10 minutes of added time.
According to the laws of the game, the referee doesn't have to wait for a corner kick to take place, except if it were of course a penalty kick. Once time is up, except for Pk, the match official can end the game at any time. I understand the South Korea's frustration, but, frankly, it was already "extra time added to added time".
I think the problem here is the optics of it - he signalled for a corner kick and then blew for full time which obviously added to the frustrations of South Korea.
DeleteThere aren't normally 10 minutes of stoppage time, so there is clearly an attempt to accurately keep time and stop time wasting.
DeleteSo if we're doing it properly then there was 25 second stoppage for a South Korean sub at 91' and 80 seconds wasted for the free kick at 96', so there was at least 1m40 to add on yet he blew at 100:55. He should have allowed the corner to be taken.

DeleteI agree to all you write. Still Taylor's way of ending the game wasn't really elegant (though according to the rules). He could have avoided all this (predictable) trouble after his final whistle by ending the game before the corner situation. Or letting the corner take place.
Pity - after an otherwise first class performance.
That does not excuse the behaviour shown by the Korean staff.
Yeah, maybe he should have let the corner kick take place, but it is not mandatory at all and that does not take away from what was elite refereeing performance.

I've done this numerous times with NO issue.
The only issue with optics here is that TV time and referee watch time may not exactly match. When I work games and there is a stadium clock, I make sure I match them up (even if it adds a few seconds on my watch). This prevents problems with optics.
Absolutely disgraceful behaviour by Bento there, unacceptable. Definitely worthy of suspension, maybe even of an escort by security out from the field. Disgusting behaviour.
ReplyDeleteAs for Taylor, a very good performance for my taste. Optimal foul detection, full control over the proceedings (until the final whistle, that is), maybe one missed YC, but apart from that a good disciplinary line for my taste. The first goal for GHA is correct for me, this was not a handball to be whistled.
Lastly, maybe there was time to allow that last corner, I am not 100% sure on this (there was an injury of Ghana player), but to put all blame for your defeat on one single corner and to behave the way Bento did is utterly ridiculous and should be sanctioned accordingly.
Excellent display from Taylor it what was a frantic and end to end 2nd half. All YC's were spot on and several good advantages played. I hope Collina considers Taylor for the KO stages

VAR confirmed Taylor on-field decision, the last touch before the goal wasn't made with the attacker's hand; hence no infrigment, APP is clear and goal shall count.
Balance:
Anthony Taylor displayed his skills on the higher level throughout the game. It was visible from the beginning the Englishman was very comfortable with reading the game, he understood quite masterfully what type of game he would face and adapted his refereeing accordingly, leading to one of the best performances of the WC.
Card selection was done on a very high level: reckless use of arms in 21', blatant SPA holding in 27', another SPA offense in 73', reckless kick in 77'. For my taste, it would have been just perfect with one more caution in 63' (no SPA, but a quite cynical LoR offense).
Foul detection was also adequately dealt with: besides one wrong FK in 6', Taylor assessed the duels with confidence, building a strong line, clearly understandable for the players.
He was also alert in 42' and 64' for head injuries treatments: one must recognize his ability to react to this kind of situation (remember Eriksen accident in DENFIN at last Euro).
He ended up by correctly showing a RC to the South Korean manager for his ridiculous protests, zero tolerance against this type of mobbing, well done.
Overall, the Englishman should be very proud of his WC debut: he delivered a high class performance. There is no doubts in my mind that we will see Taylor again in a much more important game (crucial MD3 game regarding qualification/top KO game)

DeleteLet me just add one more thing (I wrote a pretty long comment about it just after the game, but probably failed to publish it): the behaviour by Paulo Bento was absolutely unacceptable and downright disgraceful. Maybe it was possible, even better, to let KOR take that corner, but to attack the referee like Bento did is simply ridiculous, not to even mention the ridiculousness of a decision to blame your defeat on a single corner not taken. Is that the role model people want their kids to look up to? And if a coach behaves like this, is it unexpected when players do too? Taylor solved this incident perfectly and calmly (being a prison officer once probably helps him in this regard), but I certainly hope Bento will be sanctioned for this.
Do we think it's possible that Taylor will go straight to the round of 16 without a second group stage match?
