World Cup 2022 - Referee appointments for Tues 22/Nov

The trios of Vinčić, Ramos, Beath and Gomes will control the four games on the third day of competition. The first four female officials also feature - always as reserves, also paired. Slovenian team mostly have UEFA teammates, Van Boekel will assist him as in Inter vs. Barcelona, and Ramos's will be mostly CONCACAF, including Guerrero heading the VOR.

  1. Quite conservative choices by FIFA this time I'd say?

    1. Yes, this time the appointments are more or less expected

Vinčič's game might be quite unbalanced on paper but literally every single MD1 game bar this one, URUKOR and Orsato's opener today are UEFA vs non-UEFA.

    2. Yes, and for this aspect, it is worth remarking that FIFA follows confederation neutrality so far (2018 they broke it on day three).
But due to the allocation of the games, I assume, they will have to break it sooner or later (BRA-SRB or ENG-USA possibly).

    3. So who will get final in case of South America/Europe clash?

    4. Beath maybe. He had the Olympic final.

  2. I think the highlight of this set of appoinments is to see the female officials together working as fourth and fifth officials in their respective games. In particular, the pairing Frappart - Back says us many things, if you ask me.

  3. Coming back to the question in the press conference, it obviously isn't possible to appoint a woman to Saudi-Arabia. Otherwise Frappart would have made more sense in that match together with an UEFA referee.
Also the SBAVAR may suggest, that there was an initial plan to swap the French and the Senagelese.

  4. Due to the many officials used, we probably can already exclude several referees for Wednesday: N'Diaye, Martinez, Frappart, Mukansanga, Ghorbal, Turpin, Tello, Gassama, Matonte, Elfath.
Together with the appointed 8 referees, we are already down to 18 options for Wednesday - and this reduces to 11, if we assume confederation neutrality.

  5. Analysis:

    - The top appointments for MEXPOL and FRAAUS were required, especially for Beath, this is a very good vote of confidence.

    - For the other two, I find them a trifle exaggerated perhaps. Kovács would have been 'enough' for ARGKSA, but maybe they expect the Saudis to play well and use Vinčić as a 'problem-solver' referee in Qatar (like Hategan at last EURO). Ramos for DENTUN also, S. Martínez or Barton could have done, but maybe they also want to test the Mexican early and see his level/potential for the tournament, as we know they had doubts about taking him in the first place.

    - Women officials used as one could expect, as Chefren outlines.

    - Again, recency principle, so if they deliberately went to PLAY IT SAFE on Day3, I perfectly understand them.

    1. To me, Vincic in ARG - KSA more than big "over-appointment" and maybe he himself expected even more as first appearance... we know that everything can happen in all games, but in this one I expected a different choice.

  6. "The STAND-BY AVAR is a new role within the match officials' team at FIFA World Cup 2022 matches. In case of a loss of connection between the stadium and the centralized VAR Room, a back-up VAR room located at each stadium will be activated.

While the fourth official will operate as VAR, with the reserve assistant referee replacing him, the STAND-BY VAR will assist him as AVAR and the VAR system will work with only two VMO. All this happens within minutes and without match restart being delayed. "

    1. Thank you very much for this info, it clarifies a lot. Good idea, if I may say so.

    2. I know for sure that this was used also in past, without being "published", so FIFA says a wrong thing there!
But yes, this was only for very deep insiders :D

    3. So the logical thing to do, would be to send the full trio of the 4th official to the stadium for the roles of 4O, RAR and SBAVAR. Then the emergency VAR duo would still be familiar with each other.
But for some reason, FIFA appoints more complicated so far...

  7. So far, I have 6 points with the referee predictions for match one. I choose Turpin and Makelie, but was Orsato and Vincic, both are from UEFA. And about UEFA referee they will have a lot of games in MD2 and MD 3, because are still 16 games where they could be appointed. Also, I think we will see the woman referees at meaningless match in MD 3.

  8. Shameful decision by FIFA to disallow rainbow armbands.

When did a message of love become political?

    1. If we talk about human rights, this tournament shouldn't have started at all.

    2. It's shame on you all because You don't respect our culture and our religion, You all think that you are the chosen one's and every one in the world should follow and lone what you love.. We are Muslims taught you writing and mathmatic and physics and alchimestry and all other sciences, ao either Respect what we believe or shutting your f... King mouths

    3. Let me say it is a real pleasure to be admin of a blog with many different perspectives and worldviews - this is what 'diversity' really means! For me personally, Juan expresses my views perfectly and I quite understand Hussain's frustration. FIFA are right to say that we should all focus on what unites everyone here: football! :)

    4. +1 Juan and Mikael. French's captain Loris explained pretty well his decisions. Search on google.

    5. Maybe HUSSAIN you should consider shutting your f…ng mouth, as you behave in EXACTLY the same (rude) way as the the people you address. You’re lucky a blog admin ‘understands your frustration’ because comments have been deleted for less.

    6. Frankly speaking, I'm quite shocked to be honest to read such discriminating comments here and it's inexplicable for me that you genuinely suggest to 'simply focus on football' while knowing how human rights, inclusivity and values the football community normally unites are simply trampled on in Qatar.
I was already surprised about how uncritical the blog covered the circumstances around this World Cup in a whole (except for one article about the female officials participating that was clearly excessively criticized in the comment section).
Sorry, diversity doesn't solely mean to accept different worldviews, there's more to that - I'm really quite disappointed to read such comments here but it fits to how I experienced Law5's handling of the whole thing so far.

For me personally, this story around the armband is the next scandal and I can't believe how this blog is still ignoring and even glorifying the instrumentalization of the referees for this treatment by FIFA.

I don't want to be the moralizer here and I'll also enjoy the World Cup and the great football and refereeing it (hopefully) offers in the upcoming weeks.
It's, however, absolutely incomprehensible for me how you can consequently turn a blind eye to everything around that morally reprehensible tournament.

@Unknown is also quite right that comments like HUSSAIN's wouldn't normally be accepted so easily here but obviously, this time everything's different...

  9. Thanks for the clarification of the role of the standby assistant video assistant referee. Since the team appointed is very crowded, can you explain me the role of the Support Video Assistant Referee and of the Vth Reserve Assistant referee. Is this last one on the pitch ?
