  1. Gassama whistle wrongly for offside minute 12 with no action from the AR

  2. 17' Unconvincing foul call on Depay? I'm mostly watching the other game

  3. Yes im Dutch but after 20 minutes already many many questionable decisions in favor of Qatar

  4. 38' ECU-SEN
Looks like missed YC for SEN for stamping... Not easy one to detect.

    Fouled player needed doctor.

One day after that Faghani VAR intervention and I'm still shocked that they called him on OFR

    1. Yes, I agree re: missed YC, as stamp was on ankle and not boot.

  5. a bit soft for my liking, never liked turpin's style

  6. Correct penalty to Senegal decision from Turpin

    1. 100% agree. Defender simply ran into attacker.

  7. Confrontation at the end right infront of the AR

    1. And Turpin is angry. Clear dive from Valencia after he pushed the Senegal player. Well managed.

  8. Good first part of Turpin with correct penalty

  9. Very concentrated performance from Turpin. I think he solved the small confrontation at the end brilliantly, with clear body language and showed who is the boss. Good approach for the game so far.

  10. 42' Penalty for Senegal. The attacker reaches the ball first, moves it, the defender runs into the attacker.

Some would say it was a rumblehoulder on shoulder but the attacker moved the ball forward and it was not in the defender's playing area at the time of contact. In addition, the defender is late to start.

    Penalty IMO.

Just to add, Turpin was far from the duel, he was surprised by the action.

  11. Dont like Turpin and his style at all,but I got to tell, very well handled 1st half.

2nd half about to be more challenging so hopefully he is up to task.

    1. No charisma and natural authority but in a terms of decision making and managment, he is very good.

I'm speaking in general, not about this match per se.

  12. Good Turpin in 1st half. Correct penalty and good menagment of small altercation in added time

  13. Gassama with several and definitely too many minor mistakes, strange foul detection leading to too many Freekicks. I am glad this is not a difficult match. Should be his only one - in the last two WCs I saw him much better.

    1. His 2nd half was better. Easy game, after call by VAR he correctly disallowed a goal.

  14. Now in NED - QAT a similar handball to yesterday's penalty... not whistled by Gassama. The Italian commentator said: "Some people say it was an acceptable penalty, I think these people never fell down in their life...".

    1. I don't remember the minute, about 60' I think, it was outside the box BTW so no possible penalty.

  15. Netherlands goal correctly disallowed after OFR. Handball in attacking phase of play. 68' or so.

  16. Much prefer the images shown to Gassama there for the handball. He saw it in slo-mo for point of contact, live speed (from a range of angles), and then how long between it and the goal being scored (to show it was in the immediate phase before the goal). Excellent and methodical, much better than it can sometimes be. Very good!

  17. Commentator said about Turpin, "It's not just his decisions. It's his demanor. The players know he's the boss." Good analysis.

  18. 83' blocking foul missed because Senagalese player gets in Valencia's way and ball not within playing distance to shield him away from it.

  19. 84' Clear SPA and YC missed. Foul on Valencia.

  20. 95'
    Nice (smart) subtitution managment.

  21. I think Turpin missed a clear foul and YC in the 84th minute. For the rest, I just saw the last 15 minutes, in which he seemed to have a lot of authority.

I was not too impressed by Gassama. No clear line and honestly, he did not seem so motivated to me, strangely...

    1. Thats his typical style: Friendly and easy going. But I am still not sure about his skills. On the other side he was very strong in the qualification knockout phase, when things heated up.

  22. Disastrous management of the additional time. There is at least 3 minutes lost and he blows the whistle at 6:30, just after 1 minute of Senegalese flopping...

    1. Definitely should have been another minute at least, timekeeping seems to a real challenge at all levels of the game

    2. Remember that time is tracked by the 4th Official (and communicated to the referee)

  24. Turpin terrible at handling stoppage time. Play interrupted for about 3 minutes and he thinks 30 seconds are enough to make up for lost time. Frankly speaking, a sloppy performance overall.

    1. Have to agree with this assessment, yes he got the big call (penalty) correct however he missed 2 mandatory YC's imo (one wasn't even whistled for a foul) and there should have been considerably more added time than was the case. Not his best performance although I think he's a shoe in for a KO game and maybe more, he's a reliable official

  25. Once again late revealed appointments?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Every time I watch Turpin, he seems to overlook clear YC's (ones already mentioned in previous comments). He also missed a corner for ECU in first half and a clear foul throw by ECU in second half.

  27. Always amusing to read the anti-Turpin comments on this blog, as if he has done something bad to you. I did read someone saying the penalty was "soft" though, same person who would probably have cried foul if Turpin hadn't whistled it.
Well done Mr. Turpin, a great game under control from start to finish. Good luck for KO stage.

  28. Analysis of ECUSEN

    Key match incidents:

    42' - https://streamable.com/zjrdlh
Correctly awarded penalty kick for impeding with contact but no disciplinary sanction to 3ECU is a mistake. It was a clear DOGSO scenario and we can argue whether 3ECU's action was an attempt to play the ball or not.

    45+3' - https://streamable.com/glqq9i
Big conflict between 13ECU and 21SEN brilliantly solved by Turpin. Well, normally we would've seen at least two yellow cards brandished by the referee but we know that refs are encouraged to manage incidents by using their personality at this WC.

    Overview:

At first, I want to say that Turpin's facial expressions, body language and the way he managed the incidents in this game were absolutely masterclass! Preventative warnings at set pieces (9', 18', 86', 90+2'), management of penalty (42'), conflict (45+3'), late challenge (60'), substitution (90+5') and several other scenes showed his excellent ability to connect with players in an unobtrusive way and clearly indicated who was in charge of this game. Big respect!

On the other hand, we have technical accuracy and disciplinary control. While no YC to 18SEN after a follow-through feet clash with an opponent was a correct decision (38'), no disciplinary sanctions at penalty kick awarded after clear DOGSO by 3ECU (42', no matter if we deem the challenge as an attempt to play the ball or not, a YC was minimum), for reckless step on foot to 11SEN and 16ECU in 46' and 52' respectively were quite significant omissions. Other (no-)card choices were in line with the threshold he set in this game.

Two interesting off-the-ball impeding incidents occurred in 63' and 84', the second even in a DOGSO scenario. In both cases we can argue whether a play-on call is preferable but well, somehow I think FIFA is happy with it...
    https://streamable.com/km2e34

But most likely FIFA were not happy with lost time compensation which was not optimal, to say it kindly. In the first half, Turpin added six minutes but then one minute extra should've been added for the confrontation incident. Due to escalation of rough play, he decided to whistle for half-time exactly after six (initially) added minutes. In the second half, we had a substitution lasting ~40 seconds and injury stoppage initiated exactly at the end of initially added six minutes. So, after re-starting play in 90+6:50, he should've allowed ~40 seconds more to be played.

To sum it up: masterclass management thanks to which Turpin could go far at the tournament but once again he decided to not issue even mandatory yellow cards (unless FIFA think that full steps on foot can be 'managed' as well...) and some problems with lost time compensation (here, most likely, the teamwork between Turpin and Kovacs was not optimal).
