  1. Paweil Gil? Did the FIFA find a new way to misspell his name?

Good luck to the officiating team!

    1. No, this time my fault ;) Sorry.

    2. No problem, I meant no offense. FIFA's spelling of names that have letters that aren't part of the English alphabet is pretty lacklustre most of the time though.

And on the risk of being obtrusive: Shouldn't it be "Paweł" for him and Sokolnicki. Unless they - like Karasëv? - for reasons unknown prefers to have it spelt differently.

    1. At least 10 names ahead of him at this moment in terms of experience, performance and versatility combined!

    2. At least 10. In 4 years he could have some chance for semifinal. But this missed foul/PK for Sweden...

  4. This could (should?) have been penalty and RC for DOGSO!
Player was about to shot on goal there! No VAR intervention is a very particular decision, if you ask me!

    1. Wasn't it slightly outside the area??

      Delete
    2. Simply incredible for me.

      Delete
    3. Not enough for me. Correct decision.

      Delete
    4. This is indeed embarassing

      Delete
    5. Penalty yes, but ball is close enough to be considered challenging in my opinion. FIFA only want CLEAR red cards. They obviously only want VAR to get involved with decisions with zero debate.

While we, referee minded people, can accept its not clear and obvious, football people can’t.

    6. I know we have a lot of statisticians on here, I hope that someone is collating the amount of occasions VAR has intervended to make an award, correct an award ior not intervened when general opinion is that they should have. Would be interesting.

      Delete
    7. I initially thought it's nothing but on seeing reviews it's a clear penalty missed... Absolutely clear and obvious error!

      Delete
    8. Borderline. Slight holding, probably not enough intensity. No contact bellow the waist. I would go with no foul. If it was, DFC and RD for DOGSO.

      Delete
    9. Niko, with right leg, he obstructs Swedish players left leg.

      Delete
    10. Ugur, what I've seen there was no contact. Obstruction with legs is not punishable by LOTG.
I will need to rewatch it again to be sure.

      Delete
    11. Reviewing the incident - there was a contact with legs. I should be foul and RC for DOGSO. One more VAR mistake.

      Delete
  5. Clear penalty missed, DOGSO is also possible.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Wow clear penalty missed. I am Swedish but would have said the same either way. Clear penalty!

  7. How it’s possible here to not watch again this action ? VAR was mandatory !

  8. I would not have complained, if...

  9. Another penalty appeal... Nothing from Marciniak!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Well, that was an an intering situation. IMO penalty + YC.

But, hypothatical, say that Turpin reviews is once again during halftime and concludes: 'yes should be PK'. Will it be a RC? Since a YC would usually be given in the penalty area.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Monsieur Turpin is already sleeping. Incredible.

The year 2018 is the end of the Marciniak myth.

      Delete
    3. If he could've been planned for a UCL/UEL Semi-final after his shocking Tottenham v Juventus by Collina then anything is possible here in the World Cup!!

      Delete
    4. Trip was AFTER shot.

      1. Never DOGSO -- shot already taken.
      2. Experienced referees rarely give two cracks at same shot for small trip.

Rest of contact (arms, legs, etc.) can be considered trifling.

As such, not a clear and obvious error.

      Delete
  14. Good Morning Frenchman.
That was a clear and obvious error. Penalty and YC.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Did anybody see the second penalty appeal?? Berg was pushed down to the ground by Boateng... Shouldn't that be a penalty as well?

    ReplyDelete

    1. After yesterday's game, I would say foul from attacker.
      Kidding of course ...

      Delete
    2. It was the first appeal actually... Sorry for writing wrong!

  16. I still don‘t see why this should be a penalty. For me a normal and common defense action. Maybe someone can explain it to me.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Any explanation for such a choice?

      Delete
    2. My opinion is that the contact down at the legs is still „common“ enough to play on, but the push in the back with the elbow makes it PK + RC for me. The elbow might have been difficult to spot from Marciniak, but Turpin should have spotted it

      Delete
    3. So basically there are 2 potential infringements and none penalised!

    7. He probably means a penalty appeal by Muller. But nothing happened there.

      Delete
    8. Why extra 0.1 deducted? :(

      Delete
    9. Because we all rewind and re-watched those minutes and find nothing. For losing our time :-)

      Delete
    10. No no I didn't mean that... I messed it up completely and saw the 1st penalty appeal late and considered it as a 2nd penalty appeal xD

      Delete
    11. @Teo Very sorry... That's an important point for improvement!

  20. Only one for sure. And some.of the offensive fouls Marciniak is whistling all the time are just ridicolous.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Shocking game by Germany again - they don‘t deserve to reach the Round of 16.

    ReplyDelete
  22. OMG. What a catastrophe of a defense. Are we watching the deep fall of a complacent favourite?

    ReplyDelete
  23. OT: I've noticed that neither teams don't know that after situations like thus make a fast foul or stop the game somehow, to allow VAR to intervene. VAR will not be able to take it back after few minutes.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. VAR can take it back until the play has been restarted after being stopped. Can be 1 second or 45 minutes...

      Delete
    2. And if they do that and player get YC, would it be annuled if after VAR intervention PK is given? Does anyone know?
There are plenty rules for VAR to be prescribed, and public should know that.

      Delete
    3. I don’t think it would. If you tackle someone recklessly you must be punished accordingly even if you bring back a situation before. For example.

      Delete
    4. The more time passes the less credibility VAR has to take the decision back. So game stop in the first 30 seconds will greatly improve the chances to change the decision.
In theory it can be all the time you want, but that's just theory.

    1. That no penatly call was good and correct IMO

      Delete
    2. Beside that missed PK (IMO) and probably RC, nothing to mention. Pretty easy game, nothing like Korea-Mexico. Correct, as expected to be.

      Delete
    3. There was obstruction with legs plus a more than clear push on the attacker with a clear shot at goal and you say no penalty??

      Delete
    4. Of course, attacked made one more step and defender got him in a clear way.. No penalty is correct call.

    3. Fourth Official or Assistant Referee 1...

      Delete
    4. Since he waited for some time probably VAR gave some input.

      Delete
    5. VAR can't give any input there... Maybe AR1

      Delete
    6. Of course he can't wait for that... That's out of protocol!

      Delete
    7. My opinion: Composed management. He knows it is key moment in the game. He calmed down, thought about it, and draw the conclusion. Good to wait and think about a key decision, collecting info from 4th and AR.

      Delete
    8. It was clearly the AR who told him in my opinion as he had the best view.

  36. General question: Does anyone know how the usage of VAR affects the assessment of referees? For example:

    1) if the referee commits a crucial mistake but VAR correctly overrules him, is it still the same mark deduction for the ref, a smaller deduction or no deduction?

    2) if the the ref commits a crucial mistake but the assessor believes VAR must have intervened, does the ref get penalised, VAR, or both?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 1) Assessment is same as with absence of VAR. Same marks deduction. But not necessarily that will directly affect future appointments.

      2) Referee and VAR both are to blame in such a situation.

      Delete
  37. wow, interesting match. Germany is the best team in history for such turnovers. MEX-SWE will be clash. Not a good game for Marciniak. Don't know why VAR not calling refs for a penalty appeal in last few games. Primary cause of VAR must be incidents in penalty area.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Marciniak had 2 situation. The penalty missed and the second yellow card. He got one correct. Other than those 2 situations there were no big situations.

After the penalty Sweden scored anyway so you can’t say they lost because of that but if you isolate the situation it’s a huge mistake to not gice the penalty.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Dear victor, feel sorry for your nation (are you from Sweden correct?), as neutral observer you always want small teams to win. I understand you see the situation different than in other countries. Cordially, I think with some distance and neutrality you can realise it's not enough for a penalty.

      Delete
    2. Crucial mistake in any case.
      Probably last game for Marciniak.

      Delete
    3. Informal game, Bozidar? :) I predict important game for him.

      Delete
    4. Would you please like to elaborate why it wasn't enough for a penalty? I'm really curious to know!

      Delete
    5. Refinho it’s your opinion it’s not a penalty. To me if a player is running and gets tripped it’s a clear foul.

      Delete
    6. Big picture. Berg mainly gets in trouble because of being too slow in sprinting. Boateng approaches him, touches him, yes, makes contact at leg, but on World Cup level in minute 15 is this enough for DOGSO and penalty? No. Never. In amateur leagues I'd say yes, you can give it maybe even better solution. At that level? No. Never, ever.

      Delete
    7. At the beginning of this discussion I predict him semi-final. But after 2 games I think he don't convinced anybody that he deserved even qf.

      Delete
    8. So now referees have to consider which player is sprinting in what speed? Anybody sprinting slow can be fouled? There is a clear contact at the leg and then a push to the ground... From when are the rules different in minute 15 and minute 90 or in a normal match and a World Cup match? Skomina whistled a correct and brave penalty + RC literally at 2' or 3' even though one could hide behind "not enough for a penalty so early in a World Cup"... So Skomina and Marciniak are in the same platform during the assessment?? Simply unbelievable!

      Delete
    9. Soham welcome to top refereeing. Tolerance of ambiguity. Big picture refereeing. Respecting game context, match minute, context of specific incident. This is top refereeing, and not top level blogging.

      Delete
    10. Oh, don't look just tripping, look the hand, elbow and strong pushing! That is stonewall penalty and red card! Full stop.

      Delete
    11. Nobody has commented about the bigger picture and I think everybody agrees that in bigger picture the performance is positive... But a tripping and pushing offence simultaneously merits a penalty and as it was DOGSO should have been a RC... That is as per the Laws of the Game, plain and simple!

    1. Clear penalty missed... Even more unfortunate for Marciniak that Germany won so Sweden will be very vocal about it (like Serbia), I suppose... At the end of the day one can say it indirectly goes on to affect the outcome of the match and of course the outcome of the group so it's a big mistake... But what VAR Mr. Turpin was doing is even more questionable as it's absolutely clear on watching the replays so he has to take a major part of the blame... I would expect Marciniak not to get any more matches on the pitch and since he has great experience in VAR system he can be used as a specialised main VAR in KO matches!

      Delete
    2. It's clear for you but obviously not for everybody

      Delete
    3. At least for the majority of this blog it is clear... For FIFA maybe not, I can't say!

      Delete
    4. On this blog..... this says it all. The majority of this blog has no real touch to top level refereeing. I respect all opinions. But its matter of fact that between the assessments of many people here and top level there's huge gap. I don't say you're wrong necessarily; I just describe that at the top many situations are seen different like described by you, Soham, for example.

      Delete
    5. Trust me I'm in touch with a lot of top level referees and FIFA instructors from whom I take advise and learn about observing... Of course FIFA can assess this as no penalty but yes what we are saying isn't completely bonkers... Maybe you have lots of connection to top level refereeing that's good but don't forget my friend that some others here also do have many such more contacts... At the end of the day it's a matter of opinion and perception... So let's just agree to disagree; not everyone can go on defending referees for anything and everything!

      Delete
    6. Refinho, who are you to say such things? You are constantly devaluing and negating the opinions of many users, not knowing any of them and pretending to be a high-level authority. Your attitude is quite insolent.

Soham the FIFA instructor you referring to always would be interesting to know. Someone talking to a blogger during World Cup is a remarkable process.

    9. Well my only identity isn't that of a blogger... I know people personally and they are my acquaintances in real life and why do you think that is not normal?? Or you can't imagine that a small guy from India cannot be in contact with high level FIFA referees and instructors?? Or are referees and instructors never supposed to know anyone else other than people inside FIFA?? You don't know any of the readers and what contacts or acquaintances they have so not really fair to comment on that... Trust me, we have just as many high level people advising and teaching us about things at the highest level like you! ;) Of course I particularly don't need to prove you anything, because Chefren and some other readers know me well but I never go on asking others to comply with me by trying to show myself at a higher level! ;)

      Delete
    11. My first impression was the arm on the shoulder and not enough intensity of the PK. I've missed the contact on attacker's left leg. VAR should do something.
Question is why in some games we have VAR and in some VAR referee' s are not brave enough to make the call?

    1. Ok this a little different and exciting analysis! 🤔

Personally I think even if both important situations are evaluated as correct it was nothing more than an expected level performance... And then of course I think it's a penalty missed!

    2. Your opinion. The penalty is very clear on replay. It’s an obvious trip of Berg’s left leg.

    3. refinho, your analysis is of an expert man.

    4. Why of course? What makes you draw the conclusion? You are again generalising your opinion to the truth. I accept and respect your perspective; but let's agree it's debatable.

OK, can understand you see it as expected performance. I think: KEY GAME IN THE TOURNAMENT. HOLDERS ON THE EDGE OF GOING OUT. CALM, COMPOSED, SAFELY MANAGED.

    5. refinho, please, can I know where you come from?. I'm italian

      Delete
    6. Yes let's just agree to disagree... The game never got challenging nor dirty for the referee... No excessive harsh or physical play and there was absolutely nothing that was difficult to manage for the referee as the players only focussed on playing football... Never knew holders on the edge of going out contributes to estimation of difficulty even if it's a completely normal difficulty match... Writing in capital letters can't solely prove a point, if it's meaningful small letters suffice! ;)

    10. I think FIFA will back Marciniak on penalty appeal because it is not that clear for me. He did a very good performance and i think he will get more. About VAR, they should intervene only if there is an obvious mistake, for me it is not the case here.

      Delete
    11. @Nathan I disagree with the assessment but I appreciate you for your objective way of assessment without trying to impose your views on others... 14. No, says you, and you don't have guts to write your name, or even your country! Your Federation doesn't allow you that? How come, if no one knows who you are?! You sometimes try to make us all blind - well we are not, nor are those two English commentators that both said in this clip it was clear penalty. And Serbian expert said the same some minutes ago - clear and obvious, imagine! Probably he doesn't understand top level refereeing, too.
Marciniak is one of my favorites, but: 1. he missed PK for Argentina; 2. missed PK for Sweden, 3. took a lot of time for very easy decision - YC for Boateng (no matter it is 2nd). Why to consult AR or 4th ref when you are the closest to the situation?
Simply, Marciniak does not deserve another game. Probably he will get it, because of other reasons.

  41. In the first half a Swedish player was shielding the ball within his penalty area as the ball was moving towards the goal line. Muller attempted to step around the player and was held by the player outside of the field of play. According to the Laws of the Game, a penalty kick could have been awarded in that situation. Does anyone feel that a penalty kick should have been awarded to Germany?

    ReplyDelete
  42. I would like to point out one more thing that noone think too much in all that mess, its 5 mins added into 2nd half which is too much in my opinion and which was cruicial for the game result as the free kick was given to GER in 95'.
There was 2 substitutions made before 2nd half started which give us mandatory 2 mins added into the 2nd half due to 4 substitutions so Marciniak "have found" another 3 mins, where?! I would add 3 mins to 2nd half of this game, 4 was an absolute maximum!

  43. Well,I am Polish like Marciniak and wish him well, but the penalty not given to Sweden and red card to defender is beyond my underestanding. How VAR was not used in that example ??? I qas so clear and obvious to vast majority, like in the SERBIA-SUISSE last night.
I thought once VAR is used, obvious mistakes would be gone ,but they are not.
Unfortunatelly Marciniak should go back home :(

    2. No penalty is correct decision. If you ever played football you'll know it was good decision..

    3. Well, I would say if you ever played football it was a typical "stone waller", unless you start drawing conclussions like Refinho "about Cup holder on the verge of being knocked out"
No doubt Marciniak was very calm and composed (huge advantage), but made obvious mistake ,when defender trips attacker's left leg and clearly pushes his back. In my eyes clear penalty and DOGSO
Can't get my head around why Turpin did not get involved
And when you look at your last sentence Jdjdj, all those commentators and pundits across the world at highest level agreed it was a penalty (at least vast majority, as I have not heard anybody with different opinion as of yet, except few here)

  44. Very questionable decision in ARG-ISL with no penalty given to Argentina, in which I gave him the benefit of the doubt, but tonight was unacceptable.
In accordance to refinho , I can not underestand how the ref is supposed to take into account the the Cup holder is about to be kicked out ,when considering such an important incident.
Crucial mistake, also for Turpin, unless he was ignored

    1. Apparently we don't know many people associated with top level refereeing and thus our knowledge of top level refereeing is poor so we are not qualified enough to comment of refereeing in World Cup games! ;)

  47. A question to the Sweden readers : Can you please share how Jonas Eriksson analysed the penalty situation in Swedish TV??

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He didn't share it because he works with the other tv channel in Sweden during the WC. We have 2 channels that show the WC. Todays match was shown by the other one.

    2. Maybe he will talk about it tomorrow.

      Delete
    3. He has been interviewed now: ”Penalty - there are two fouls, pushing and tripping”.

    4. So a referee who has operated at the highest level thinks it's a penalty!

  48. I will be firmly in the minority here, but the way Refinho and some others (NOT Mr Smith) have been treated on here is more than a joke IMO.

    1. I agree. The blog has become a playground of a few, especially one "man" who thinks he is smarter than everbody, has nothing else to do in life but to comment on everything here and I only wait that he'll start to claim he's in touch on a daily basis with Putin and Trump as well. More than a joke, agreed.

    2. It would be exciting to know what profession you are in and what lot you have to do in life... By the way so nice to see you commenting about something not related to Slovenian Football Federation or their referee appointments!

    3. My PhD and profession have nothing to do with football, so I won't be answering you about that. But i DO have a job, a family, friends, i do sports, travel etc. I was a referee myself (dare to say, on a higher level than you, young boy), but i quited due to personal reasons 10 years ago. I intentionally don't want to comment on specific incidents, because i don't have time to check and answer all of your 10 comments in 1 hour that will follow. Now if you will excuse me ...

    4. Nothing gives you the right to pick on other readers' comments as long as the content is not related to you, busy man... Just IGNORE and move on and don't expect things to be solely the way you want or like... And you are excused, I'm not holding you in here for sure... I'll carry on in the exact way I want and you can go in your own merry ways, and just as I never pick on you, you may do the same... Anyway regards and good day!

  49. Interesting Game. As a German, I am obviously pleased with the final outcome, however I am not pleased with the performance of the referee team at all.

    1. Missed PK, Berg clearly got pushed by Boateng in the 1st half
    2. A lot of fouls were misinterpreted in the 1st half, Draxler did commit a couple, but he was punished a few times for no reason
    3. Wrong Offside, when Werner missed the goal by a mile
    4. Correct 2nd YC for Boateng, but why did it take almost 1 Minute to make that decision? Did he not see it? Because the tackle was cleary worthy of a YC.

Overall a mediocre performance form the referee, I don't believe that comparing to other perfomances he is deserving for a round of 16 match.

    ReplyDelete
  50. 1: the push is not the issue it’s the trip on the left leg. The push makes it even more of a foul.

    ReplyDelete
  51. If you continue to exclude referees because they made a mistake in a PK or a YC for the finals, Collina will call me to direct them.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I think that Marciniak did a good job over-all. However, for me there is no doubt about the penalty situation. Also, the management of the Boateng red card was weak. However, on a positive note, Boateng accepted the RC immediately and left the field with no further complaints.
Last, I think that one or two YCs could have been given.

But still, a good and calm performance. 7,9/8,3 for me.

Btw, guys, would it be possible to debate here without references to who we are and who we know? I could start naming people, but what's the fun? We are here because we like refereeing. Could we focus on reasons for an opinion, instad of 'BUT I spoke with a FIFA instructor' and 'But I have high level experience.' Come on...

    1. All people here are between 15-20y old. Only few people can say they got some experience. When i hear "i got high level experience" and they're refereeing in a lowest competition that makes me laught. We're here to give our opinion not to comment on every single post.
Gotta love when some people give different opinion and then get attacked by some people coz of it. Some people rage when they get same people over and over to comment every single post.

      Delete
    2. There is no need for someone to be "attacked" here. This is a blog - we are only giving our opinions on situations occurred on the pitch and sometimes comment other statements - that's the point of every blog, to debate.
But when someone is speaking about himself in superlatives, in the manner that we all should humbly listen to him and not to have our own opinion, when that person make us all blind and consider that we are enlighten because he is teaching us here (and we don't know who he is, from which country etc.) - it is natural human reaction to answer.
For example, on Croatian football TV there was big discussion from expert Mateo beusan and famous football player, now manager Robert Prosinecki. Beusan was with Brych, praising his decision, a Prosinecki said several times that it was stonewall penalty, double holding, 2 on 1... Journalist and one guest in the show were with Prosinecki (so 3-1), and the poll where ordinary people voted were in majority for the PK. So, the opinion of the ref was in big minority, even he is experienced, top level bla bla bla. Football is not molecular biology, we all have our eyes, we watch it for years (I am near 40, although my head is hot sometimes, as DrMr said ones) and we can see when it is obvious foul or not! We can not make grey area such big and say for fouls in German or Swiss PK area (or Iceland against Argentina) that are grey area and ref is entitled to do what he wants. Then grey area is 80%, and black and white in total 20%.

    3. Greetings from DrMr :)
We all have moments when we need to cool our head, don't be angry to me :)

    4. @Jovan: One thing is for sure, I am not between 15 and 20. ;)

To be honest, for me the 'stonewall penalty' for Serbia wasn't a clear penalty and I did actually agree with Brych. However, I also see arguments for a penalty. It's a matter of 'what's the first foul'. So that's interesting actually.
The shame is, that those discussions are overshadowed by people who want to show that their opinion is the best.

      Delete
  53. The real scandal of the game was the behaviour and words of the Serb manager at the pressconference who said he would send Brych to the war criminal court in Den Haag. FIFA should send him home and exclude him from any official tasks in international football at least for a year!

  56. HELLO VIEWERS

GET OUT OF FINANCIAL MESS WITH THE HELP OF drbenjaminfinance@gmail.com

I have been in financial mess for the past months, I’m a single mum with kids to look after. My name is REBECCA MICHAELSON, and am from Ridley Park, Pennsylvania. A couple of weeks ago My friend visited me and along our discussion she told me about DR BENJAMIN OWEN FINANCE of drbenjaminfinance@gmail.com that he can help me out of my financial situation, I never believed cause I have spend so much money on different loan lenders who did nothing other than running away with my money. She advised, I gave it a try because she and some of her colleagues were rescued too by this Godsent lender with loans to revive their dying businesses and paying off bills. so I mailed him and explain all about my financial situation and therefore took me through the loan process which was very brief and easy. After that my loan application worth $278,000.00USD was granted, all i did was to follow the processing and be cooperative and today I am a proud business owner sharing the testimony of God-sent Lender. You can as well reach him through the Company Email drbenjaminfinance@gmail.com

    THANK YOU VERY MUCH
