  2. Pitana YC after 9 seconds, absolutely record!

    1. Official time of caution -- 15s. Still a record. Heh.

      Delete
    2. I just clocked it. The foul came after 6.5 seconds, Pitana issued the card after 12.5. Incredible :-)

      Delete
  3. Is this fastest YC in WC history?

    ReplyDelete
  4. 1st foul-1st YC after 11sec.

    ReplyDelete
  5. It was a very harsh yellow, or actually I think it's wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Strange call from Pitana on Ochoa there.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Appears to have been a very poor call based on the one replay.

      Delete
  7. Not sure that ball was outside penalty area, but doesnt matter. It must be YC then for Ochoa?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Minute 4' very interesting situation: Pitana assessed that Mexican Gk had touched the ball by hand outside the box. Very likely a mistake, it looked to be on the line. Free kick assigned, however, nothing happened.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Wrong freekick against Ochoa. Pitana with a very hectic start..

    ReplyDelete
  10. Uff. Mistake... Pitana 7-8m from goalkeeper.

    ReplyDelete
  11. The replay shown was excellent in terms of assessing inside / outside, I guess this is stuff we have thank to VAR.

    ReplyDelete

    1. It also appeared that the ref may have been (at least partially) screened by the Swedish player there...

      Delete
    2. He was screened, even he tried to positioning him self better. Positioning is obviously something that he must improve. He is to close to ball and action - interfering the play.

      Delete
  12. Possible RC for SFP - #7 SWE with a more than reckless challenge.
VAR supported. YC was the minimum there.

  13. Good YC 26'
    What a natural authority.

  14. I still wonder what's wrong with the sound of Pitana's whistle, if you know he uses a Molten Valkeen...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Pitana does NOT use a Molten Valkeen whistle. People need to stop saying that. He uses a regular Mini-Fox40, tied to his wrist by a black lanyard. He has always used that, and he continues to in the WC. He even uses the Argentine Y/R cards (not the official FIFA ones). You can see the (too big) AFA logo in the second showing of a yellow card. I think non-Arg refs here confuse the whistle because of the pictures and short video clip showed in the preparation for the WC. In that day he DID use a Molten Valkeen whistle... but that's not his whislte. He probably was handed one for the exercise but a colleague or something. I insist on this.

  15. Orange card there for Sweden #7... he's lucky the lenient directives from FIFA are there :)

  17. Absolutely no handball and no PK. Why doesn't VAR see that that isn't an handball

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Jonas Eriksson said it definitely could be a PK.

      Delete
    2. If the ref gave a handball, I think it would be a supportable decision maybe... but no handball seems like the correct call to me. Never should have been reviewed.

      Delete
    3. You mean Eriksson the Swede? The "Swedish" referee from "Sweden"?

      Delete
    4. Being paid by, presumably, "Swedish" television to broadcast to "Swedish" people in the country of "Sweden" who will likely be rooting for "Sweden?" Hmmmm

      Delete
  18. IMO good no call by Pitana. Chicharito is running naturally and the ball skips up into his arm. Nothing he can do about the ball hitting him.

    ReplyDelete

    1. To it’s a deliberate use of the arm. It was an instinctive reaction to the wrong ball control

    1. Definitely not looking forward to what Busacca and PLC have to say. I'd care more if I had the tiniest hope of them being truthful and honest with the public. But they'll gloss over the mistakes give us the "we're doing great" line.

    2. I'm hoping that we (finally) get to see some of the clips along with their comments, though I don't expect it at all.

      Delete
    3. Transparency from FIFA in regards to specific incidents or calls? In my own personal dream world, that would be the standard.

      Delete
    4. They may show clips and share what they think as the correct decision???

      Delete
    5. I highly doubt that my Indian referee brother. "Back the badge" all the way. :D

      Delete
  20. Mmm... it seems handball to me. I know the arm is near the body but MEX player used it deliberately. I think he was aware of this and his face says a lot...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Where should he keep his arm when he played the ball?
The only option was to keep his arm to his body, like he did.

      Delete
    2. It appears to me that when the ball is coming, the Mexican player straightens his arm and holds it in position, allowing the ball to play off it.

This happens when a player is not trying to avoid handling.

If a player is trying to avoid handling it, they move it out of the way. There was time to do so.

      Delete
    3. @Yannick he missed the ball wih his chest and controlled it with his arm. I think he could have avoided it

      Delete
    4. He flexed his arm to make it rigid--exactly what @Alex Fletcher said. He knew exactly what he was doing. I'm shocked people don't see this as an obvious handball.

  21. It would be great to have a replay of the incident. :-)

    2. Great, thank you. No penalty is supportable, in my view.

      Delete
    3. There may be tiny touch off chest/abdomen before ball hits hand -- very hard to see. Arm although stiff is (sort of) behind player. Both PK and no PK are supportable -- in those situations referees with wisdom choose the lesser of two evils. I am glad to see that this (another OFR where call on field stood) was reviewed by referee to make final decision.

  22. Very tight onside on SWE goal. Great job by AR2

    1. He wouldn’t have raised it even if it wasn’t tight because of instructions anyway

      Delete
  23. Another mandatory caution missed for approaching the penalty taker. I give up.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ridiculous by FIFA to instruct referees not to penalize such inappropriate conduct.

      Delete
    2. It goes along with the non penalizing of diving and dissent. Of course both things that FIFA preaches that it would like to eradicate in world football.

      Delete
    3. You are spot on, Sheriff. Makes med sad to see this at the world's biggest stage. Sets a bad example for children.

      Delete
    4. Sends the worst possible message to the up and coming referee's and players.

      Delete
  24. I'm very late but I have many doubts on the handball appeal that was reviewed... Pitana clearly made a signal that it came of the chest or something like that but clearly the players controlled the ball with his arms... Surely that's a deliberate action and must be penalised???

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I read many different opinions here and there, I think Pitana decision will be supported. Sometimes handballs are very, very difficult to assess. At least one can say it wasn't a clear mistake. Do you agree, Soham?
      Pitana surely in KO stage.

      Delete
    2. Whatever may be the assessment it's not any big issue or absolutely clear so for sure Pitana will get a good KO match and depending on that maybe a further semifinal or Final! :)

      Delete
  25. Wow what a day. And still two matches left.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Overall good performance by Argentinians. 1st penalty appeal 50:50.supportable decision to play on. 2nd pk correctly awarded.
    Pitana surely in KO.

  27. Wonderful Pitana, a match direction among the best I've seen in my life. He referes but at the same time plays football, interprets the game perfectly, whistles just right and then whistles what players would like him to whistle. Almost nobody speaks and whoever tries is overtaken physically and is located the no of Nestor under the nose. He also plays football, it seems he wants to dictate the passages of the ball, bites and is always a few meters. A whistle is not wrong, no one. And it explains to players what he see and why he make certain choices, give patting up players shoulders and helping players get on with his arms. Players like he because he looks like one of them. On the fast stretch he's a bit behind, his physique in this penalizes him a bit. Embarrassing personality and important particular, never gives the impression of being in trouble, never a trick. Stylistically I would have something to suggest to him but perhaps he would stone, on him it would not be useful. Can he do what he wants on the pitch for me, when he'll be refereeing again? Collina , let him make two eighths , a quarter and the final so I see him again 4 times.!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Socks above the knee VOTO 10. Prepower.

  28. I think Pitana had a tremendous performance today. He did what he is known for, and he did it well: strong physical presence, absolute control of the game, fast and sharp crucial decisions, being close to every play, earning the respect of players and coaches, no major mistakes. He did make one mistake with the Ochoa handball situation. He was clearly blocked from view by the Swedish player, but I think he made a "guess" decision by the position of Ochoa's body. A mistake nonetheless with no consequences (luckily for him). The early yellow was correct--even if a bit harsh. Nowhere in the Laws does it say that cards must be given only after certain time of the game. Having said that, it was "strategically" a great call simply because it set the tone right for the players and the rest of the game. Saying "non of that with me today." Then his decision paid off, with only minor fouls being committed by both teams. He remained consistent throughout the rest of the game with the bar as set in second 15.
The penalty situations, I think he was correct on both. In the first one, although he issued a no-call (once again, instantly) he was honest enough to "review" the play to be 100% sure. It was after all a major decision that could ruin one of the teams. He doubled-down on his initial call. Perfect decision. The upper arm (NOT the hand) only slightly touches the ball, while being almost glued to the torso. The ball was stopped by the body, not the arm. And that's what counts. I agree with the ref's interpretations basically. The second penalty, was spot on. He Mexican player never touches the ball and does make contact with his leg on the Swedish player, who stumbles and falls. Excellent, yet extremely difficult, decision to make. Good for Pitana. The offside situations was also a major plus for the referee team from Argentina. No mistakes despite some sharp close calls being made (correctly so). One extra comment on his style: notice how he very smartly slowed down the play sometimes by the simple physical presence in front of the ball after a foul was given. He "reads" perfectly well the "temperature" of the game and players, and helps them breathe in and oxygenate their brains and cool down a bit--without killing the game's very own fast-paced rhythm. There were two clear such situations that only other referees would probably notice. But overall, this shows how experienced Pitana is and how well he used all his skills today. I could definitely see him refereeing one of the semifinals, or the final itself, if ARG doesn't make it to the end.
