  1. Red carded ref from Eriksson... :-)
I don't know this guy. What can we expect from him? I see he is 45, so is very experienced.

    1. I was speaking about Diedhiou.

    2. One of the steadiest referees in Africa... A safe pair of hands is the most appropriate description!!

    3. He impressed me at AFCON 2017 where he got a Semifinal. One of the most impressive soft skills in CAF (I know this is not saying thaaaaat much, but).

    4. Yes... He is a man manager... Kuipers and Cakir type of ref...

    5. Ref Comm indeed made a wise choice assigning him to this particular match with these two teams.

    6. Yes... Good match for someone whistling his debut World Cup match!

    7. Agreed. A low key affair. With two lesser known teams that have a similar easy going ball control style of play.

    8. But it may be challenging... Serbia and Costa Rica both get physical at times!!

    9. Not a lot but some definitely!

  2. Excellent appointment for Malang Diedhiou about whom people had many doubts whether he would get a game in the middle or not... The man worked super hard and always has been a trusted and reliable name in CAF, whistled a very good Club World Cup in December and this is a much deserved appointment for him to start the World Cup... I'm sure Malang will do well and justify the appointment and I wish him well :)

Most probably our dear friend Mr. Jonas Eriksson won't be happy with this appointment!

  3. You can see that Tessema Weyesa has a Russian assistant referee paired as fifth official. This clearly means, in my opinion, that he was originally planned with Hmila, but then, following Range exclusion, Hmila became fifth official to Mehdi Charef and so they had to assign another assistant referee to him.
Everything so far seems to be like we were predicting.
No surprises as well with Pitti fourth official.

  4. I guessed Diedhiou. So happy for him. Where is Eriksson now?

Guys are you doing well in prediction game? I am at 21 pts...

    1. @Sheriff are you serious?

    2. Yes, I am. The "oh woe is me" attitude that Eriksson has taken on, is deserving of that type of comment. And yes, what he says does come off as bitter. But hey, just like he has an opinion of Diedhiou this is my opinion of him.

    6. I also didn't have a fully correct guess, but 9 out of 11 times the correct confederation. :)

    7. Confederations I have also got correct on several occasions :D

    8. I guessed Pitana, Gassama and Diedhiou... Started very well, but I have problems with predicting MD2 :D

    9. Poooh... only 5 times the correct cohfederation and nothing guessed exactly right so far. I am struggling under the water line...but we count in the end.

  6. We should think that the possible foul before 1-1 has been assessed as acceptable decision or even correct... so in that case, Rocchi performance would be "only" 8.2 in my opinion. Big chances for him.
Also, to underline, many Italian VAR appointed in these first games... great trust in Italian referees.

    2. As you can see this video is an initiative by his best buddy and UEFA elite referee, Tasos Sidiropoulos with whom Kuipers spent some vacations before the World Cup in Rhodes, the Greek Island where Tasos is from.

I saw that there was a big controversy in the playoff for Serie B, Frosinone - Palermo, yesterday about the refereeing.

Perhaps our Italian readers could in form more?

    1. A very difficult match from the beginning for Federico La Penna, who is about to be promoted in serie A along with Chiffi. It was more than challenging starting from the early minutes. An excellent simulation decision was taken in first half, but the most controversial incident occurred in second half, minute 60': there was a foul close to penalty area, maybe it occurred on the line. Referee changed twice his decision: at first he had assigned a free kick, then he converted it to penalty, then again free kick (the original decision). He was surrounded by many players from both teams, who tried to influence him. The contact maybe occurred on the line, but one can't penalize referee for that, the problem was his management. In addition, after the 2-0 by Frosinone in the fifth minute of added time in second half, there was a pitch invasion by fans, celebrating. It is not clear whether referee had whistled, however match ended there. Now, Palermo will submit an appeal because they think the game was not regularly ended.
Many controversies in this game, I mentioned only the major ones. Reserve players from Frosinone, in the last minutes of the game, were deliberately throwing balls into the pitch to make the play stopped. More than unsporting.

    2. I watched the game as well and I fully agree with Chefren. The management on the 60’ episode was poor. No one has still understood why he changed his mind twice.
Regarding the final whistle, a replay showed that he whistled just after the goal was scored. I can back this behaviour even if there was still a minute to play (added to the 5’ injury time): The game was over.
There’s no chance Palermo’s appeal will be processed, for sure Forinone will be fined for the balls thrown in the pitch

    4. I managed to watch the full match on VK after your comments.
What a very, very challenging match! That is the hardest match I watched all season, together with Fenerbahce - Besiktas by Palabiyik and Italy - Sweden of Mateu Lahoz.

La Penna showed why he is so highly rated IMO, but didn't necessarily show an outstanding performance. The first ten minutes, in spite of not thaaaaat good prevention, was managed very well and the simulation decision was excellent, and this helped him 'win' over the players.
With so many duels to assess, very pleasing small number of mistakes regarding fouls detection and YCs. He presented himself as very diligently and concentrated, and his management of the players was largely excellent.
60' was unfortunately a very poor impression, as already discussed. I think it will be hard to believe in ten, fifteen years that such crucial matches took place without VAR.

That surely was the hardest match of his career, and I think it is unfair to send a Serie B list referee, that match needed a top class referee, Mazzoleni or Banti were surely the best options available. I know it is tradition in Italy and Spain to appoint referees from the relevant categories, but these matches require the best refereeeing possible.
Not to say that La Penna did especially badly, but in case of a totally faultless refereeing in this match, the mark would have been 9,0≤.

  10. I'm really bored to read always the same "battle" between readers, but is it so difficult to ignore? Sometimes, for sure, I have the feeling we are in a kindergarten. This is annoying for all the other readers, please stop that! Thank you!
