Looking forward to finally seeing Michael referee at a big tournament in what should be a good game. 😀
ReplyDeleteLove watching Micheal Oliver in premier league, my favourite. Uefa prefers Taylor shown by appointments.
ReplyDeleteExpecting typical Oliver performance and he will be fine!
Good luck Micheal
I've been very critical of Oliver (& Taylor) in recent times.
ReplyDeleteThis is because I think he whistles too much AND he awards too many 'soft' pens.
But I hope he proves me wrong today, by having an excellent match.
I wish him luck.
Interesting how a ref would find having such an important game as the first in front of a full crowd for such a long time.
ReplyDeleteThere is to be a drinks break. 31 degrees in Budapest
ReplyDeleteWill be around minute 25 and 70.
Delete3.min Clearly missed YC nr4 FRA
ReplyDelete9.min missed YC
ReplyDeleteIt was very deep in the defending half, IMO supportable to not assess it as SPA.
DeleteVery combative and challenging game from the start. It seems that it might be a perfect test for Oliver.
ReplyDeleteNow 2nd tactical foul Pavard/4 and he got the YC, so ok for me...
ReplyDeleteOliver just gets the same taste of football as Cakir. Clear after 10 mins it will be a very physical game and the underdog team is ready for the fight. Also the crowd is amazing today again.
ReplyDeleteAnd good YC for persistent infringement in 9' min.
19' missed YC
ReplyDeleteMissed YC (Kimpembe)
ReplyDelete19' YC missed now for FRA no. 3 after SPA-ish impeding/blocking offence.
ReplyDeleteI have a question.
ReplyDelete26’ Oliver correctly stopped play due to the ball striking a defender on the head.
Although the ball was clearly going to a French player, he blew his whistle when the last touch was the block from the Hungarian defender.
Play was restarted with a dropped ball to France. Should it have been dropped to a Hungarian player?
Great spot! Indeed, it should've been a dropped ball to Hungary.
Deletegood advantage leading to a goal. nice for oliver!
ReplyDeleteIon case there really was a foul (no clear replays), it’s a good advantage indeed.
DeleteIMO a good, expected-level performance so far. He started in this quite tense match with a smart early YC for persistent infringement to cool things down. Afterwards, he missed one or two YCs, but had the control over the match all the time.
ReplyDelete5 minutes of added time, but maybe 3 (surely 2) were not played due to goal scored. This is not clearly stated, but yes, I would have waited a bit more before final whiste.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, we will have for sure a challenging second half, given the score, this can become more difficult than Cakir's one. Full stadium is always a factor.
In my opinion good performance so far, with some possible YCs more but nothing extra-ordinayr.
Indeed, besides unpunished reckless treading foul at 39', good use of cards according to the tournament guidelines.
DeleteDespite his unobtrusive manner, some nice interactions with players visible.
Agreed, I like it a lot how Oliver communicates with the players, sometimes smiling and very calm. Not faultless but overall a solid impression.
DeleteHe allowed the play to flow and a definite different style from Oliver today as he was seen smiling and chatting to players as opposed to his very serious face and frowns he displays in the PL and UCL in seasons past which ultimately works for him to get acceptance as a young referee but it was pleasing to see the other style from Oliver.
DeleteGreat first half by Michael. Good luck for much of the same. Solid performance so far!! 👍
ReplyDelete51' Sensible YC for HUN no. 21. Oliver shows a good use of disciplinary measures so far.
ReplyDelete68' seems like a missed YC to me. For the rest, good performance of Oliver so far.
ReplyDeleteGood interpretation of advantage here by Oliver.
ReplyDeletePoor advantage for me there, French players mad.
ReplyDeleteThe French player took the shot. If he had blown, then that shot went in, I'm sure the players would go mad also. I think Oliver can't win there and got that right
DeleteExactly 👍
DeleteIt was a no win situation for Oliver, and can’t be marked down for that.
I agree with Quilava, although it was a difficult situation. Free kick from that position is the biggest advantage unless there is 1 on 1 situation.
DeleteThe one thing that would lose you control / respect would be blowing just as a player strikes a great goal into the top corner! Was a clear advantage and in that split second, it had to be allowed
DeleteThe first poor refereeing performance of the tournament IMO. Several clear YC missed and fouls missed. Poor from a very overrated referee.
ReplyDeleteWe dont care what you think! Either give examples and arguments or better dont write anything.
DeleteI disagree, ofc there are some minor mistakes but it's not 'poor' refereeing
DeleteStop being bias, good performance by Oliver and I hope to see him again.
DeleteOwen hasn't gotten the biggest matches that I've previously seen. How far do you think he'll go in the Euros? Also, and this is a total digression, but why are players using the smallest shin guards now? When I was playing, we had huge shin guards with air tubes in them. The tiny ones are the fashion now and perhaps lend themselves to ease of movement, but they don't seem safe and I guess FIFA doesn't mind them, either.
ReplyDeleteOwen Powell from WC 1998? I don't think he is at the EURO actually.
DeleteI think he meant Oliver
DeleteAlso after 90 min: I saw a good, expected-level performance by Oliver. Second half was less challenging. He chose sanctions very wisely, but in my view one or two YCs should have been issued additionally. Well done! :)
ReplyDeleteMissed penalty holding last minute, Oliver was seen smiling after that.
ReplyDeleteNo penalty, var looked and confirmed not enough. He was smiling because it didnt want crowding (copa america refs....) no way pen called for that minor hold
ReplyDeleteI'm sick and tired of crowding in all South American games. Refs to to OFR booth and at least one player from each team follows him straight into the camera area.
DeleteAs a huge critic of Oliver, I have to say that he had a decent game today.
ReplyDeleteMy only very tiny criticism is that he whistled a 'little' too much, which very slightly slowed d pace of the game.
But overall, a mature & responsible performance from the English referee.
Communication: check
Calmness: check
Card management: check
Well done, Oliver.
For me I felt he whistled to little which added to intensity of the game, I would have loved if he whistled more to calm the game down..
DeleteIt is a record so far at the tournament if Im not mistaken, 32 fouls whistled.
DeleteWell done to Oliver, expected level performance. We can argue nearly in every game if 1-2 YCs are missing according to LOTG. Same today, but Oliver was perfectly in line with refereeing approach of the tournament.
ReplyDeleteAnd also I would praise his approach to the game, really active in the beginning and then he could start let the players to make the show. Second half we could nearly notice Oliver on the field.
So well done to Oliver, it was a pleasure to see him and hopefully he enjoyed also the game in this massive crowd.
All in all I think we talk about an 8,3 performance.
ARs were nearly not challenged, I can't really remember offside situations, but both of them active with controlling the close areas.
I largely agree with this analysis. Indeed in nearly every game one can discuss 1-2 missed cautions. I’m a bit in trouble with Pavard’s YC, as this actually was veeeeeeery little of a foul and a YC for PI was not still needed IMO. Kimpembes block was more of YC for me, and that would also have made the signal. But all in all only minor issue, generally well done in a not that easy match. I especially was happy to see some relaxed contacts with players, something I really missed in Oliver’s approach in the past.
DeleteExactly I would prefer a strong verbal warning there and then yellow card 10 mins later, but in the large picture it doesn't matter after the game. Oliver attempted to take the control of the game, clear preparation for the game. He chose that Pavard moment for it.
DeleteAnd yes I agree, indeed great communciation with the players through the whole game. He can be very satisfied with today performance.
Maybe unfair, but it always seems worse when the two fouls are so close together, and I think people expect the YC then.
DeleteIn my opinion a good performance by Oliver in a game with an unexpected score, well done. Generally, I think Cakir performance in HUN - POR was more difficult regarding crucial decisions, while Oliver for sure had his work to do, but I think that, also thank to his skills, the game remained overall quite fair. There were some mistakes for sure, but nothing really important, he can be absolutely content. Committee was surely expecting a performance like this.
ReplyDeleteIn any case, his next game seems to be already sure, looking at the next fixtures, not so many options if not Slovakia - Spain (would be similar choice to today's assignment, but less difficult on paper).
We will see.
Oliver is an extraordinary referee.
ReplyDeleteA good(smart)referee I had never seen like.
DeleteHas anyone noticed that the French goal was handled by Mbappe with his arm?
ReplyDeleteYeah, but it was no punishable handball according to the ‘normal’ criteria and as he didn’t score the goal himself but only provide the assist it did not become punishable by the ‘scoring a goal’ criteria.
DeleteWell if this is true, he didn’t score by himself but made the assist and in line with the new directive as long as it wasn’t deliberate it would stand
DeleteThe normal criteria between shoulder and arm would be the armpit, no? So anything above the shirt sleeve wouldn't be handball.
DeleteBy ‘normal’ criteria I (Anonymous 17:30) meant not deliberate, not unnaturally enlarging body surface etc.
DeleteNo, it’s not the shirt sleeve which determines a handball (as some institutes incorrectly state), it’s the armpit.
I think Oliver is a different referee than most referees at this tournament. A bit more easy going, less with the strong body language. But for as far as I've seen it, he did a good job.
ReplyDeleteIf Oliver get a second match in the group sfage, his only opțion is Spain group. And the most important game in that group is Sweden vs Poland. I don’t think he will be at Spain vs Slovakia.
