Orsato positioning is bad, twice almost got in the way, and now the pass hits him and he has to stop play...will get a low mark for that
ReplyDeleteThat was a mistake by Orsato to stop that attack whem ball hit him. Same situation in TUR-ITA solved diferently by Makkelie.
ReplyDeleteI think that, after a couple of years of this, the game actually expects the play to stop if the referee is hit.
DeleteThe reaction of players in TUR-ITA and this match both suggest that.
The difference between this and that though is that the in the TUR-ITA match, the ball went out wide to the touch line so defending players were able to recover, whereas in this instance, it was immediately brought into the penalty area and defending players had less time to recover.
I am not quite sure why Danielle Orsato had to stop the play there when he accidentally touched the ball. Croatia were the team attacking and they regain possession after the touch, his whistle denied them the advantage. I don't know if anyone thinks differently.
ReplyDeleteIMO mistake by Orsato.
DeleteSteve
ReplyDeleteLaw 9 - It’s not allowed if ‘a team starts a promising attack’. He unfortunately had to stop play.
Positioning poor so far - has been in the way lots of times
Yes I just saw it, I apologize to Orsato, correct decision.
DeleteThere is a difference between the referee creating a promising attack or after the touch and ball position a promising attack is started by the players. In this case the Croatia players stared the attack after returning back the ball, and not vice versa. So play on would have been the correct decision. Point for improving only.
DeleteDon’t think it could be more promising! They nearly scored!
DeleteIMO the attack was existing before the ball touched Orsato. I’d have liked to see play continue, but I might just be stuck in pre-law change ways.
DeleteContinuing an attack after contact with the ref=new attack. It happen because of the ref. play must be stopped.
DeleteLaw says when the touch creates a promising attack. That wasn’t the case here, just ball possession. Now Orsato disadvantaged Croatia attacking phase twice. In Turkey Italy we saw players accepting the advantage.
ReplyDeleteOrsato is getting in the way a lot! He doesn't seem to be very mobile or light on his feet.
ReplyDeleteOrsato in trouble with positioning in the first 15'. It is a mistake to compare Orsato's decision with Makkelie's. In today's case, Orsato was forced to stop the game as he created an assist for a clear goal scoring opportunity. In Makkelie's case, his touch did not create any clear scoring opportunity. Orsato's decision is correct and fundamental. I hope he will find better positioning throughout the match, the teams play very close and the game hasn't been much linear so far.
ReplyDeleteFew days ago, a wrong offside call on a corner kick became misteriously correct. Today, stopping the game because the referee's touch created an assist for a goal is considered wrong.
ReplyDeleteI really wonder how some users on this blog could judge international referees without knowing the basics of the LoTG.
Today, without the referee’s touch the same player would have received the ball, being able to start the same attack. So the question whether or not play should be stopped - I think correctly done by Orsato by the way - can at least be discussed.
DeleteApart from that your condescending tone I consider inappropriate and unnecessary.
It has nothing to do with the laws of the game. It's all about if it's their favourite ref or not.
DeleteCorrect free kick for handball and first caution of the match.
ReplyDeleteThe problem is not basics, but the considerations. People ready “stop play when it creates a promising attack”. This means that a pass that wouldn’t be promising gets suddenly promising by the touch of the referee. In this case after the touch the ball stayed in position of an attacker with 5 defenders in front of him and made a one-two with a team mate and then after it became promising. So, it wasn’t the referee who created it, but the players. If you block a pass that would have been promising then you can play advantage because without the touch it would have been promising too. Think clever please and try to find the logics, and not only the words written.
ReplyDeleteNo bigger decisions to make for Orsato apart from the drop ball and YC for handball SPA but I didn't like his 'wise guy' attitude trying to make as many play-on calls as possible. Positioning was very bad to be honest. One or two incidents are nothing serious but he was constantly getting in the way.
ReplyDeleteProcedure for the dropped ball was according to common-sense and self-preservation, Croatia nearly scored, imagine that this goal is shown again and again, when it has hit the referee.
ReplyDeleteMost people who know the rule think that the game AUTOMATICALLY stops when the ball hits the ref. So if Croatia had scored this would arouse a lot of (unnecessary) attention for the officials.
Orsato was quite correct to order a dropped ball in my eyes. Otherwise, the only remarkable scene in the 1H was really 16' IMO. Not challenging games at all on a tactical approach-level at this EURO so far...

Was said quite a bit in the first half but Orsato' positioning continues to be poor in the opening stages of this second half.
ReplyDeleteOrsato keeps getting in the eay of play. Unacceptable for a top UEFA ref.
ReplyDeleteNice teamwork leading to YC, 63’. Orsato giving the thumbs up to his colleague.
ReplyDeleteGood recognition of his assistent
DeleteNot impressed with Orsato. Performance below par.
ReplyDeletePart of my opinion is maybe because im not that much of an Orsato fan, but for me this is the weakest performance of the EC till now. Not impressed by Orsato at all even if there is not very much to report
ReplyDeleteI agree. All in all we haven't seen bad or great performances yet. I would say they have been okay so far.
DeleteIs there any other reason why you are saying poor performance apart from this blog’s bias towards Italian referees?
ReplyDeletePositioning
DeletePoor positioning and to much whistle where it is not needed.
DeleteFortunately for you signore Rosetti makes up for this with his own bias in favor of the Italian referees :p
DeleteOrsato has had a good game. Not much to report, sure but a solid performance. If the harsh words I am reading come from referees, I'm honestly speechless. No need to bash Italian referees only because you don't like Rosetti. You should be able to judge impartially, as referees rather than fans. 8.4 from me.
ReplyDeletePoorly against Sterling. You don't need that
ReplyDeleteTo bossy. I don't like it
I'm not the biggest fan of Orsato but I do not understand why some of you do something like this... His performance is very far from "poor", actually it was a pleasant performance with some minor mistakes. German commentator said that the referees did well. I understand that it seems like Italians are "favoured" sometimes by Rosetti but this opinion has nothing to do with the "actual" performance. If the positioning in first half is the only thing we are talking about, Orsato can be satisfied...
ReplyDeleteGood, expected level in a not difficult match; unfortunately on this blog it's impossible to talk about Orsato, it's a pity.
ReplyDeleteOk performance by Orsato, nothing more and nothing less. Good job in controlling the game, cards were all justified. As mentioned his positioning was weak but nobody will talk about the referee this afternoon! For sure a second match (and more) for the Italian.
ReplyDeleteGreat start of EURO 2020 for Rosetti and co!
IMO nothing special in London, correct performance by Orsato.
ReplyDeleteActualy, I agree that positioning was a problem, but control and all decisions were correct.
DeleteI haven't watch the game but as I see here this wasn't Orsato's best day, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteNot really, the blog was overrun by a few mouthful Orsato bashers. In reality he had a good game, expected performance.
DeleteAgree with Anonymous. Decent performance in a rather boring match. Nothing major to talk about.
DeleteAgree with Anonymus. Orsato had some problems with positioning but everything else was correct.
DeleteWhenever Orsato referees a match, this blog becomes a kindergarten, I'm sorry. Orsato showed a solid performance for my taste, but the comments consist of, as always, "poor". A pitty!
ReplyDeleteAgree, when Orsato, Kuipers or Makkelie are refereeing this blog is not so objective anymore..
DeleteI agree with all comments beginning from 16:45. Some people here are either seriously afflicted by confirmation bias, or for some reason want to do everything to bring down Orsato, Roberto Rosetti.
ReplyDeleteExpected level by Orsato in a game of normal difficulty. The physical condition is a problem, yes, but apart from that one can't discuss about the technical point of view. For me a full 8.4.
ReplyDeleteShameful behaviour by the forum. Except some problems with positioning in the first minutes of the match, the entire performance has been faultless. All fouls were correct, all cards justified and (as usual) control of the players and recognition. The match was medium level, not easy nor difficult. I hope moderators will take actions to bring back discussion on this blog and avoid those shameful posts by users who understand nothing about football and refereeing. I hope those users are just football fans and not referees, otherwise they would a danger for football (many users did not even know the rule of game stopping when the referee hits the ball)
ReplyDeleteIf this is a poor performance, then I bet I'm reading posters with surnames like Collina, Elizondo, Webb, Rizzoli (not to mention Puhl and Belqola, may the rest in peace). The attitude of some posters towards Italian refs is ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteGood performance in a rather easy match. For me 8.2/8.3 level depending on how one sees positioning issues. Still style wise this was my least favorite performance this EC till now. And thats nothing against Orsato. Its more of a compliment to all the refs who have already had an inset this tournament.
ReplyDeleteI think people need to calm down a little … people are allowed to express opinions, and it’s surely not due to nationality - I’d hope we were more professional / mature.
ReplyDeleteFor me:
Positives: calm, generally low-key in a calm match, key decisions correct, all YCs spot on and none obviously missed (perhaps an argument for a YC - or at least public warning - for persistent fouling against a couple of England players)
Issues:
Fitness - Seemed to struggle and I wondered if he was actually injured? Seemed very one-paced and unable to change speed/sprint?
Positioning - getting hit by the ball can happen but he was repeatedly in the way of play
Communication - whistle was too quiet (particularly in first half, couldn’t hear it?). Often whistled but then signalled no direction - often confusing what he’d given; I think non-referees would have found it difficult.
Can’t put my finger on exactly why, but he seemed off colour / not his usual self??
BUT no one (other than refs) will be interested at the end of a high-profile game so Rossetti will be generally happy.
Summed up my thoughts exactly Steve. Constructive criticism not destructive criticism. If people get angry at you for this kind of opinion then shame on them.

I haven’t posted for some months here and today’s game is exactly the reason why. I see people writing “poor performance” because of wrong positioning in a couple of cases.
ReplyDeleteThe same people who commented as “positive” Makkelie’s performance and “acceptable” the mistake from Turpin’s AR1.
Here, there is a huge bias against Italian referees: I still remember some comments when Di Bello was appointed for Russia-Slovenia. Hundreds of comments to judge (not clear on which basis) the wrong appointment, 4 (FOUR) comments to report the excellent performance.
This is how this blog evolved, once here we talked about refereeing, now I mostly read fans and people without the basic knowledge of the LOTG.
I’ll keep reading the blog, hopefully it will come back to what it was
Makkelie with some fouls missed, hitting the ball and calling offisde on corner kick in front of the whole world watching: "positive performance, expected level"
DeleteOrsato hits the ball at 5' and faultless performance: "will get a low mark, poor performance"
I wonder what the comments would be if team Orsato had made that ridiculous serious mistake instead of team Makkelie.
“Ridiculous serious mistake”? Obviously the bias you’re complaining about works two ways, and you’re participating :)
Delete@ Anonymous - Please do yourself a favor: seriously read the lotg and see all the videos in the IFAB presentation of the new rules. Please
DeleteRidiculous because calling an offside on a corner kick should not happen in Sunday league, let alone EURO Cup with the whole world watching. Commentators in every country made fun of this unusual mistake, which is far more serious than simply hitting the ball.
DeleteThe saddest thing is when I came to read this blog one hour ago and luckily I watched the match on TV. Because of some shameful comments, someone who read the blog without seeing the match would think Orsato made disasters, while IMO today he showed probably the best performance in these 3 days of the tournament (Makkelie's game was more challenging though). This is a bad signal because this blog is losing credibility when it comes to judge some referees.
DeleteThough I agree with you with regard to Orsato’s expected level performance and though I’m surprised as well by the many negative comments on him I don’t like you feeling the need to discredit another ref for making your point. In this way you keep up this negative trend on the blog, just my opinion.
DeleteI have to say that I have the same opinion as Marco regarding the overall knowledge basement of quite a lot of the comments here. I have been refereeing for 23 and and I am a referee instructor for ten years. But a lot of opinion (which of course everyone can have) do not base on the the law of the games.
ReplyDeleteNow on Croatian TV former referee Marijo Strahonja is saying that Orsato made mistake by not whistling foul on Kramaric. 40 seconds after that, England scored.
