  1. Before the start of this game, and before the refereeing arguments begin, I will like to take this opportunity to say a big 'THANK YOU' to the blog administrators such as Chefren & Mikael W for the wonderful work they do everyday in keeping this blog alive and active.

We should not take for granted the great work you guys are doing as blog administrators. You admin guys are the best!!!

This blog has proven very informative, and allows loads of quality engagements. Although we sometimes agree to disagree, but this difference in opinion is what really makes this group interesting.

PS: I still believe Wilson's red card is unacceptable though :D

    1. Well done Taylor with a small delay!

      Delete
    2. Why did he wait? Maybe an assist from AR1 or FO?

      Delete
    3. Unsure about the card, in my opinion, there wasn't any chance to have support from somebody else, given the position of the foul.
Difficult to intervene for AR1, too far away.

      Delete
    4. I think he actually reached into his pocket immediately after the foul but then only showed it after calming everyone down.

      Delete
    5. Yes, I also think, he had his hand in the pocket immediately.

      Delete
    6. Indeed. I saw that, too.

      Delete
    7. His hand went to pocket but he didn’t get the card in his hand. If he took out the card i would understand the delay.

  3. Yes, well done. Correct yc after 57 seconds!

  4. Challenging start for Taylor, very intense game from the beginning. Correct YC in 1' but missed YC for Immobile in 7' for sliding into the goalkeeper.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 7' is not mandatory IMO, because Immobile does everything to minimize the impact. If he had just slided on, it would have been reckless, but now I think, a YC is not neccessary.

      Delete
    2. Not a YC for Immobile. Fair slide for the ball and he pulled out before contact with the GK. Foul only is the correct decision.

      Delete
    3. No yellow card for immobile is correct, immobile attempted to pull out and no intent to hurt the GK

      Delete
    4. Clear YC missed. Foul from Immobile was reckless.

      Delete
    5. Seems like many people support the no card decision here. I accept that but disagree. It is a reckless tackle against the goalkeeper as Immobile had no control over his body. The only thing he could do – and he did so – was to make sure he does not hit the goalkeeper with his studs up. He could not avoid a collision because he was sliding too fast towards the goalkeeper. In case of studs up, it should have been a straight RC for SFP.
So, it is a YC for a reckless tackle in my view.

      Delete
    6. I wanted a YC for that. Immobile needs to realise earlier, that he won't reach the ball before the GK.

      Delete
  5. Taylor did not intend to give a YC for that foul. He changed his mind simply because the fouled player stayed down and rolled around a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  6. The italian.lifted his feet and made contact with his bum - never a yellow card

    ReplyDelete

    1. As an Observer I can tell you for this incident not to give yc -0,2

      Delete
  7. Here we go again, Taylor haters are back 😩. I also saw that he reached to the pocked immediately, so his itention was to show YC. But far as I know, English referees usualy show YC as Taylor did, with certain delay, after situation is calmed.

    1. Unlike Italians ref for example

      Delete
    2. Just can’t understand how people hate the likes of Taylor and Oliver. They are both very good referees but because a decision didn’t go there way in the prem they are just seen as “awful and corrupt”

      Delete
    3. Some folks here are a good joke. They dislike the referee and try to nitpick as hard as they can. Maybe the same who applaud the ridiculous RC shown by Siebert.

      Delete
  8. Now another possible YC but I find reasonable the decision by Taylor.
One could say that only the challnge in 1' was worthy of a YC so far.

    1. Not a foul, just both players coming together - some claims for fouls not being given is the reason this tournament is going so well

      Delete
  11. I hope his "soft line" letting the match flow and ignoring some little fouls pays out later, I have my doubts...

    ReplyDelete
  12. Baumgartner got the free kick he hoped for now, so Taylor awarded an Austrian diver in the midfield...

    ReplyDelete
  13. All those things may have no big evidence, but his foul detection does not convince me tonight, up to now.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Stop complaining! He’s doing the right thing just cause they roll around that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a foul it’s just them over exaggerating

      Delete
  14. Wow, that was an extra long "wait and see" by AR2. Definitely too late call for me, noone expected the flag after such a long time.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agree. Actually he could raise his flag at first. Even after he had chance to raise it when italian player passed the ball back.

      Delete
    2. Yes, I would add very clear offside, could the assistant have found more "courage" to raise the flag before? But most important thing is to allow VAR, in case, so no blame.

      Delete
    3. Yes, OK to wait for the first action, but should have raised the flag, when the ball was played out of the penalty area.

      Delete
    4. Indeed, this is the priority but why was there no flag after the ball had been kicked out of the penalty area? This is my main criticism here, Taylor even wanted to whistle earlier, you could see that in real speed. Of course, just small points but they are visible.

      Delete
  15. 42' correct to play on, not a penalty in my opinion, clear gestures by Taylor.

    ReplyDelete
  16. AR1 with a big delay for a big offside. I think in this case, when the offside is so obvious, the flag should be up faster because the delay coud lead into a injury or something.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Offsideflag 40´from Assistent unbelievable. Clear 3 meter offside and he delayed 30sec later. So poor.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Three words for Taylor: in total control!

    ReplyDelete
  19. IMO so far good, expected-level performance by Taylor. One correct YC, some other possibilities for cautions, but Taylor's choices were defendable and a value for the match for me.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes good performance so far

      Delete
    2. Taylor is by far the best referee in card management. Very few officials have his feeling and knowledge of the game and the players.

      Delete
  20. Solid performance by Taylor in a challenging game. He decided to be rather lenient, trying to save some YCs. Until now, everything goes well (although there were some players who were not happy with Taylor's decisions and some protests). But he has to be aware that it could become dangerous...

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think if a hesitant flag from AR2 is all there is to talk about, I think they’re doing well!

Brave YC in 1st minute (unusual in tournament but correct), calm control, letting play flow, ignoring players going down for soft fouls, quick to stop play for the AUT player and head injury.

A very good 1st half in a really good game.

    ReplyDelete

  24. 49' Spot on. Foul outside the box. YC.

  25. Wrong fk and YC from Taylor. Influenced from the Austrian player's screaming and rolling around.

    1. Wrong comment from Lawaj. Influenced from negative attitude towards Taylor.

Honestly, how can you disagree with that???

      Delete
    2. Maybe you missed the replay, I can only think that, very clear decision... but not later when Taylor I think missed YC to #19 AUT.

      Delete
    3. To be honest, I also wasn't sure about it after watching the replay once - so I checked again after your comments. The tricky thing is that he gets a lot of ball simultaneously with a rather small contact with the opponent. But as the leading foot hits the opponent and the trailing leg more randomly gets the ball, I agree with the foul decision. However not 100% clear for me.
And I would also say, that the YC should not be for a reckless challenge, but only for SPA.

      Delete
    4. I’m more on the line of Lawaj as well here for the reason Philipp says. Much ball, little opponent.

      Delete
  26. Unbelievable dissent by Italian players. At least one caution issued for that, but Taylor just stands there and does nothing. The teams recognize what they are allowed to do, referees have no possibilites because of the guidelines. I strongly disapprove of that.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think Barela was booked for dissent during the protests. But on the other hand, you can understand the Italian players' anger.
      The fk was quite contentious.

      Delete
    2. Not a reason for the outrage - there complaints wont change Taylor’s mind

      Delete
    3. Beside the fact that it is a clearly correct decision, it's very dangerous to justify dissent when the decision is wrong, we should protect referees from this excessive complaining, also when decisions are wrong.

      Delete
    4. I always have to laugh a bit when people try to give their opinion more weight by saying “clearly”, “very clear”, “most obvious”. It seems we see many, many clear situations this tournament :)

      Delete
    5. I'm NOT justifying dissent. Dissent should never be tolerated in any football match.

I'm just stating that as humans in a highly charged high stake game, the fear and anger of the Italians in conceding a dangerous and highly contentious FK is understandable.

Just in the same way the Austrians are angry at not being awarded a PK.

      Delete
    6. "we should protect referees from this excessive complaining"

But the referee's don't protect themselves. They just stand there and take it. But it's kind of tough when they've been stripped of their tools.

So what are the referee's to do when the Ref Comm strips (instructs/prohibits) them of the ability to punish these sort of acts?

      Delete
  27. Now missed YC to #19 AUT, in my opinion to be given. Reckless tackle.

  29. Excellent now Taylor (64:00) with a correct play on, simulation outside the box.

    ReplyDelete
  30. IMO an obvious booking missed for AUT9 for a reckless stamp in the foot near the touch line.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Offside to be checked, probably the goal for AUT is not valid.

    1. Offside! Correct VAR intervention. Close call but AR2 could have seen it. Unlucky performance by AR2 today after the strange offside flag in first half.

    3. Even two possible offside missed before by AR2.
      Not the best performance!

      Delete
    4. VAR should support Taylor's decision. Offside given after VAR intervention, so two missed offside positions leading to the incident.

      Delete
    5. Agreed, Chefren. I am sorry for AR2 but today is not his day. Even "normal" spectators recognise that.

      Delete
    6. Without the offside, also the possible handball by Hinteregger would have been an interesting point for discussion.

  35. One candidate less for final, after this game.

    1. Why? Correct decision.

      Delete
    2. LOL There is not a single wrong decision. Very good from Taylor actually. With another official, there would be 20 players on the pitch and the players would be fighting each other.

      Delete
  36. Now we can maybe state that without offsides before, VAR would have invited Taylor to rewatch the challenge, otherwise they woldn't have called offside, the silent check would have ended.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes I thought that too but we have AVAR2 to check offside and VAR+AVAR1 to decide whether it could be an OFR. It is indeed possible that they wanted to wait for AVAR2 to make a final decision about OFR.

      Delete
    2. In case, one could also disuss, whether it remains a big mistake by Taylor to miss that penalty.

      Delete
    3. Ref_1707 that unfortunately is not the protocol because more time will be wasted with that, they first have to check the foul it’s self if it’s worthy of a Penalty and only then if they do say it’s worthy of a review then they check offside leading to the potential foul, doing it the other way will waste a lot of time because you spend a minute or more drawing lines and in this case 2 lines where drawn for potentially two offside and after that you now check the foul which might not be a doubt....

      Delete
  37. Not best evening for AR2 Adam Nunn.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Taylor saved from a missed penalty for illegal use of the arm by the Italian defender due to offside. Otherwise OFR for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Offside from the freekick, offside from the flick and maybe handball

    ReplyDelete
  40. Taylor is apathetic.. not communicating, no preventive actions.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Finally, it was a good decision by the commitee to take in charge Taylor for this game. Good choice.

  44. Spot on assignment.....calmness, waving away flop/dive appeals, stands in well when mobbed for var checks...uefa will be happy...no faults on any offsides in 2nd half...too close, one 3metre clear one 1st half should have been flagged. TAYLOR is a Prem.ref. he has been thru it all before

  46. 89' this was a revenge foul after Italy continued to play, pushing with both arms, well.... a YC wouldn't have been wrong, but in my opinion this time Taylor didn't look alert as before, a mass confrontation could have easily started.

    1. YC is not necessary IMO

      Delete
    2. Clear yellow card. Without any chance to play the ball a hard push in the back. Unsporting behaviour.

      Delete
    3. I would say, a YC is the expected decision there, because it clearly was done deliberately to stop the game. However not a clear argument for it in the LotG, I think (other than general unsporting behaviour).

      Delete
    4. But it didnt, he had everything under complete control

    5. Siebert would have shown RC. Just kidding. Guys, there should be enough players for the match to go on.

  47. Some minor mistakes in 1st half and a linesman without luck. But for me Taylor with a good performance in a difficult match, very good foul detection in 2nd half!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Taylor with a solid performance but let me say that I am not fully convinced. In my view, it seems like he is not as aware of some incidents, some conflicts on the pitch as in the other games. GER-POR was definitely excellent but somehow I have the impression that it is not his best match today. AR2 has an unlucky day while AR1 is great. Interesting 30 minutes to follow.

  55. I think we should all be happy that we saw a brilliant young ref and a very solid performance afterwards in a challenging game, so let's be happy about the refs being all in all successfull in this tournament so far. Playing chearleader for special refs hoping to support them this way does not make any sense: That does not even help the ref or the commentator.

Solid performance by Taylor: excellent foul selection, not great card management (two mandatory YCs missed (15' and 53'), others possible (7', 89',111') and I would have preferred a YC to Verratti (dissent) in the first half). He missed a penalty, but there were a handball and two offsides before that, so no problem. Bad night for AR2

  60. I don't get these "he could get the final" comments to be honest. It is unnecessary to talk about the final and the semis. Everything depends on how the results will look like. Taylor won't get a SF if England will be there. Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Spain, England – they all have good teams. As Germany will play against England on Tuesday, we will have to wait. It could be a good game for Taylor or Brych...

    ReplyDelete
  61. Taylor produced a good performance in a hot, challenging game. His calls were mostly correct (not always but there were so many duels in this match and we should take this into account, too) however in some cases brought dissenting behaviour. What I didn't like today is that Taylor didn't even try to reach players on communication level. I think some (public) warnings would have prevented some scenes. It was too much 'whistle and decide about card' approach, no middle way between only FK and FK and YC. That's why I would call his today's performance good but not very good.

    1. Oh, and by the way I would prefer stronger moderation of comments by Admin Team. Some of them are simply space consuming, some even insulting ("shit in eyes")...

  62. In my opinion overall it was a good performance by Taylor, who looked to be always in control (maybe less in some moments, but given the difficulty one can understand) of the game. Very challenging from the beginning. Big points for discussion are the possible cards that he didn't want to issue. At least two were mandatory in my opinion. However, as somebody already reported, nothing to say about foul detection. The penalty would have been assigned without offside, but since it couldn't exist, committee will not consider this as crucial mistake. The overall imagine is rather positive. Bad day for AR2, but this can happen, no problem. Now, maybe we can't talk about a final appointment so early and we must also see what will happen with Oliver and England national team, however, I wouldn't be so surprised to see Taylor indeed assigned to a semifinal.
I didn't understand the nature of some anonymous comments during this game against Taylor and against Italy. I think there weren't situations in which he can be blamed, rather, one or two possible cards he didn't give were for Austria.
With a more refined disciplinary management, he could have been even more accurate in this game, but again, I look from the point of view of the difficulty of this game.
First thing is that there aren't controversial decisions at the end, and a so hot game has ended with people enjoying football.
We will see what committee has in mind, before some possible replies to this message, let me specify this is just my opinion.
And to some anonymous from Austrian side, please comment in detail without short sentences, I would like to understand more about your anger, because in my opinino there weren't particular incidents in the game clearly against Austria.

    1. Chefren, I completely agree with absolutely everything that you have written. But IMO there is a huge difference between your analyses here and your usual way of analyzing some other referee. As you are absolutely right for the missed cards, I have never seen from you to mention missed cards in the games of the likes of Turpin, Kuipers or Makkelie. And actually there are plenty of missed mandatory cards in every their game. But you never called this "big points for discussion". As a blog admin, please try next time to make the same type of analyses for the games of these referee also. Anyway, I would like also to congratulate you for the blog and to thank you for the work and efforts you put in.

  63. Over the course of the whole 120mins, Anthony Taylor had a good game tonight.
As many people already know, I am NOT his fan, and I have been critical of him in the past. But he was generally fine today.

At times, he made some questionable/poor choice of foul selections in my opinion.

But to be fair, he generally allowed the game to flow, and for that, I am highly impressed. A good candidate for a QF or SF.

  64. IMO a good, expected level performance by Taylor on a challenging match. His foul detection was good. Very good decision on the 1st YC of the match regardless of the min. His management of the match and the players were also good.

2 mistakes by AR2 (the 2nd one is very tight -> not that this excueses a PL assistant).

Good decision by Rosetti this appointment. A further one would certainly be deserved.

  65. Another very good display by Taylor. The game was quite challenging and he kept his cool. Foul detection always clear and coherent. Card management was superb.
