New discussion, as in the previous one we were close to the maximum number of comments allowed (200). This is the first game to reach this "target", and the very particular thing is that it is the one of the only referee at this third appearance.
ReplyDeleteJust wondering, who were the referees who missed out on a second game?
DeleteEkberg, Grinfeld (due to bad performances) and Kovács (by Rosetti's decision).
DeleteNow imagine if Ekberg, Grinfeld or Kovacs (who inexplicably was given only one "dead" game without prior test) had whistled that PK in POR-FRA. It would be the apocalypse! Mateu failed badly and has to deal with the consequences. We'll see if there's still any respect and decency as the match was broadcast to the entire world.
DeleteBas Nijhuis said on Dutch television it’s never a penalty for France. And the referee will go home.
ReplyDeleteDutch television is rooting for Kuipers and Makkelie like crazy so Nijhuis isnt the most reliable source, altough I tend to agree that after tonight his max should be 1/4final.... the 1/8 final Ger-Eng has one of the names Kuipers/Cakir wratten on it...
DeleteNijhuis also said Kuipers is sure for the final. So you can see which interests he follows.
DeleteSurely it is not right for an international referee to make such statements. What will Rosetti think about this behaviour? Sitting in a studio where they show scenes of Hitler, the wrong focus. Talking and laughing about Makkelie. What is he doing there?
DeleteNijhuis wont care at all so what does Rosetti want to do? Nijhuis knows he wont get big duties internationally anymore so he decided to go to the dutch TV I think.
DeleteTough game for Mateu's team because game so difficult, and tough, engaged.
ReplyDeleteLahoz's team and VAR did mistakes but it's ok for R16.
Ok, so now that the game is finished, time to talk about the performance. In terms of game control, it was absolutely brilliant in a game with 4 penalty appeals and which was not decided until the 80th minute. Well, one could say that until Portugal's 2nd goal, but that was not really the impression of the game. In terms of disciplinary management, it was also very good for me. Specially, the caution to Griezmann.
ReplyDeleteAnd then, the trouble. It has been the most challenging match I've watched (I did not watch them all) so far, with 4 penalty appeals. The first and the third, given, are absolutely correct. The 2nd and the 4th are very doubtful. As I said before, I don't think the 2nd one is wrong, but not in line with the rest of the match and not what the people expected. The 4th appeal looked like a clear foul, but one of the replays showed it was outside the penalty area, so just a missed foul.
So, where does this put Mateu? In my opinion, it is nowhere close to other performances discussed in here where the referee didn't look focused and didn't get full acceptance. Also, Portugal is through, so given the general picture, I think Mateu will make it to the KO stage. However, I think it will be very difficult to see him in the final now if the committee assesses the 2nd penalty as fully wrong. But if it is supported and the performance is assessed in terms of control and management, I wouldn't completely rule him out. I know I'm going to get a lot of anonymous destructive comments below, but that is my feeling of the game and his season in general.
So here is one Anonymous who agrees with you :)
DeleteMateu was brilliant aside from the second penalty and last minute step on calf. His management skills are outstanding. Even with those two scenes in mind, his overall approach and style was generally so much better than Kuipers, Makkelie (in both games) and Brych (in second game).
I may not anonymous but I agree with your comment, George.
DeleteThanks! I wrote that based on the previous comments of many others in the other post today and other days. Of course not everyone, but some of them.
DeleteFair analysis, I can agree on everything.
DeleteI don’t think it’s necessary though to make reference to the anonymous status of some readers. It doesn’t make any difference if I would make an account with an alias (which does not show my identity either). I can still sell a lot of rubbish as a registrated user…
@Anonymous 23:31, you really dislike the dutch refs! Let’s just wait if refcom agrees with you ;p

ReplyDeleteWAL-DEN
Imo key games for the final referee.
I already see Rappallini at England Germany
ReplyDeleteChefren, when we will know who leave Euro?
ReplyDeleteDo you think I can have this information? :)
DeleteFor me Lahoz with an acceptable performance. Generally very good, but with one crucial mistake, because IMO the PK for France was not acceptable. But he should get a quarterfinal.
ReplyDelete90+3 France Portugal its was outside the box but crystal clear RC. Very surprised that Var didn't suggest a OFR for RC

Do you consider it a DOGSO offence?
DeleteSecond screenshot looks like the contact is on the line. But impossible to be sure.
DeleteAnd yes, SFP needs to be considered there with the point of contact and a fully stretched leg.
Does anyone's local broadcaster have any better angles in the fulltime analysis of this scene? I'm not that satisfied with the ones in the television sequences to be honest.
DeleteWhy not OFR for a potential red card when VAR could also check whether the foul was inside or outside the penalty area? Following the OFR, if Mateu is not convinced about RC, he can award a yellow card, but at least they would have ensured a proper review took place.
DeleteBTW Manzano had tough moments after penalty expectation. There was a clear slap on face, after VAR check (over 3 mins), the decision was supported.
ReplyDeleteAlso Pitana cluldn’t start the game for 8 mins because of Colombian players’ protests. The reason was the ball hit Pitana then with 2 passes Brazil made the goal.
DeleteNot a good night in Brazil
And Brazil made last minute goal and won the game, what a match!
DeleteWell well well… Nice to see people saying “apart from the (blatant) mistakes, excellent performance”. The same still complaining because of some other referees’ positioning in games with 100% correct decisions.
ReplyDeleteSome even wondering Mateu in the final! Crazy stuff, but no surprises
If Mateu's second PK is not enough to send him home, performance means zilch. Can you imagine what the talk would be if that joke of a decision had been taken by a less experienced referee??? Come one, we do need seriousness and honesty. That PK is simply not acceptable at this level. I'm sure Matue is feeling bad and ashamed after reviewing the incident. It is unfortunate but one cannot turn a blind eye to such a blunder.
ReplyDeleteMateu's job stole all attention but let's emphasize Karasev's excellent display in Munich. It was a pretty tense match, all to play for and he rose to the occasion. Same criterion from the word go, no matter the result. He deserves a R16 or QF game.
Come on*
DeleteMateu's second PK is similar to Turpin's PK yesterday, so they should be assessed in the same way.
DeleteRewatched the situation before the end of the game, unluckily we can't draw clear conclusions, rewatching a replay it seems indeed that it was slightly outside, but at the same time I must say not so much far away from SFP. VAR checked only the possible penalty, hopefully they analyzed the foul as well... for me RC could have been issued given the hitting point, and player was aware he couldn't get ball. More generally, with this very minimal approach by VAR, Rosetti could have big troubles in KO stage. I hope this wont happen, of course, but still... there were many things to check about this incident.
ReplyDeleteDid anybody also notice how lucky Lahoz was, that Guerreiro didn't score in the Handball Penalty situation for Portugal. It seems as Lahoz whistled before it was clear that Guerreiros Kick wasn't gonna go in.
ReplyDeleteyes, but he had to whistle it at that point. There should be no chance for advantage.
