UEFA Referees committee continues to doesn't apply the UEFA regulations about bbserver of Turkish FA. In EURO 2020 only there is an observer who has not been a FIFA referee.
ReplyDeleteI want to ask where does this privilege comes from? Is it because Jaap Uilenberg is the consultant of the Turkish Football Federation or because Roberto Rosetti is the former consultant of the Turkish Football Federation?
How ethical is the consulting of UEFA and IFAB board members in member national associations? (with high fees)
Neale Barry (Head if Referees in England) observes UEFA games and was never a FIFA referee?
Deleteagain i repeat myself in what i wrote a couple of days ago:
Deletethis "you have to be a former fifa referee"-rule only applies for new observer-candidates. those who are already observer - some of them for many years - will still stay observers, whether they have been former fifa ref or not...
it would make no sense at all to kick out excellent and highly appreciated observers, who have done terrific work in past few decades, like the above mentioned barry or german legend eugen striegel - who i think never missed to be appointed as observer for any major tournament in the past...
imagine if rosetti had to go to barry, striegel or ilmaz and tell them: thank you for your terrific job in the last years but sorry, we have to kick you out and replace you by former fifa refs from gibraltar, andorra or san marino. we dont know these guys and the probably only had one international match in their entire career, but they were former fifa-referees so we have to take them...
The biggest game for Çakır. Surprising for me. I didn't find his first performance good. Also a good game for Turpin.
ReplyDeleteKovács was harshly treated by Rosetti. Other refs had a chance to perform well on MD1/2 and get another game on MD2/3 (see Siebert; Ekberg and Grinfeld didn't use that chance) while Kovács has been appointed to a meaningless game on MD3 without a chance to get another appointment in case of good performance. Unfair!
I would add "that", before "good", in the third sentence; totally agree!
DeleteKovacs is 36 years old. He has the chance to whistle at EURO 2024 and 2028. This tournament is a good chance for him to get know the specific atmosphere of a tournament. He hasn‘t pressure to get good games.
Delete@Anonymous, You dont fair comments. Çakır is the most career of Euro referees. He has a problem with Ceferin because of his SVN-AUT match. It's not about his performance, it's personal.
DeleteNiklas G: you can say the same about Siebert, but he already got two matches. They were not treated equally as Euro referees at the start of the tournament, likely because of their country.
DeleteKovács' appointment makes sense and was expectable.
ReplyDeleteTurpin and Brych are logical choices for two tight matches.
Cakir's match is surprisingly big. I think, commitee still trusts him a lot and also liked his last performance.
I disagree completely. His status has been due to his bad form and many OFRs needed, but in the first game he did really good, so if he repeats the performance I am quite sure he will participate in KO stage.
ReplyDeleteWhy do you Ref545 and Flip consider Kovacs’ appointment logical and making sense? I for me am totally on the line of Anonymous 10:18 and Mikael.
ReplyDeleteWhat did Kovacs do wrong to deserve this treatment, while some 1st Cat refs did have the opportunity to show their skills?
Exactly - it is simply poor management of resources by Rosetti re. Kovács (unless we are missing sth, like injury?), sorry.
DeleteWell I believe it is somewhat political. Rou is the only "small" country with two refs at this tournament. Kovac is probably seen at the end of the Elite category and on par with Ekberg (only Swedish ref) and Siebert (second German (big country) ref). I think that explains the situation; at least to a degree...
Delete(yes the Netherlands are also a smaller country but both referees are basically top 5 in the world...)
Yes, that is my point (Anonymous@11:09). ROU is a rather small country and he is clearly behind the other Roumanian at the EURO. I personally disagree with that, as I think that every chosen referee should start in the tournament with equal possibilties. However, I resume that commitee planned him for one match only since the beginning (and also since the announcement of the participants).
DeleteIMO, Cakir's appointment is justified after his first match, where he wasn't faultless, but showed that he can deal well with a challenging match (no surprise, of course). Of course, there were many other possibilites, but there are also many other matches that will be similarly important.
ReplyDeleteKovacs was expected now - would not make much sense to throw him into a decisive game on MD3 as tournament debut. However his treatment seems weird, if there are no particular unknown reasons for it. Normally one would expect that every referee gets the chance early enough to recommend themselves for a further match.
As mentioned already, safe options for group B. This also means less big names left for the other groups (basically only Kuipers), so that increases the likelihood for a third appointment for someone. However I hope, that they will trust the referees, who performed strongly on MD2, i.e. Soares Dias, Karasev and Rapallini with important games.
Agree Phillip, I would have thought that one of Brych/Turpin would be saved for what could be some very interesting scenarios in the latter groups, absolutely agree that at least 1 person will get a 3rd appointment now!
DeleteI think Kovacs, Ekberg and probably Grinfeeld will stick with one game. I would like to see Rappalini again on a second match, but there is no guarantee there either.
If Oliver doesn't perform in his match today, then he may too only stay with 1 match.
Big appointment for Cakir. Not expected tbh if you take into account his currecnt form and his reputation inside UEFA.
ReplyDeleteKovacs, as expected, makes his debut on a match without any riding on it. Turpin for the other big one. Not the best appointment for Brych with Belgium already through.
I don't think that the committee views one game in group B as more important than the other. However, I do think that BEL- FIN is likely to be the easier game since both teams are known to be fair and there is no danger of heated confrontations.
DeleteWhen you look at the three appointments of Brych and Kuipers you could almost get the idea that the committee tries to give them "good" but relatively "easy" (on paper) matches but also keep them on some kind of cruise control towards the semis/the final.
A lot of italians in this appointments.
ReplyDeleteAnd even more Germans!!!
DeleteHope that remaining 12 referees for knock out phase will be: Lahoz,Kuipers,Brych,Orsato,Turpin,Taylor, Vincic, Rappalini, Makkelie, Cakir, Hategan,Soares Dias.
ReplyDeleteWouldn’t it have been great if the referees chosen for this tournament were all ‘on a level playing field’ and everyone having the same chance!
DeleteThe suggestion… (correct or otherwise)… that the final referee will be Kuipers, before a whistle was blown is shocking!
Referees should be marked on their performance in this tournament, if they perform well they get another game, if they don’t, they should be binned from further matches. This scenario of Rossetti choosing his favoured few with one or two others there to ‘make up the numbers’ is just not correct.
I refer to Bryce at 2018 WC only got one game, why? Because he was poor and didn’t deserve another. That’s the way it should be!!
I speak about that from beggining of tournament.
DeleteExpected appointments, thanks for supporting me with the prediction game, Robert Rosetti... ;-)
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, your predictions are insane until now :o
DeleteI am starting to think that Ref_1707 is Rosetti himself with those accurate predictions!
DeleteHaha, well after my bad predictions for MD1 and 2, I simply had to do better. Maybe Rosetti had pity on me... No, honestly a lot of you had similar predictions, so there I was a bit lucky indeed :)

Well, I didn't expect Cakir to be appointed to the very critical Austria match at all. Considering the aftermath of Slovenia-Austria qualification match, I was thinking commitee would avoid such a deaignation due to political reasons. See;
