Oliver ! Congrats to him for this appointment.
ReplyDeleteNormal for Orsato. I would have prefered Turpin
The English duo's prediction was the right one. Congratulations to the bloggers who predicted it.
So Taylor is the first referee to be observed by Committee member. In case of good performance I think he can count on at least quarter finals.
ReplyDeleteKovacs: the only one without a game yet. I don't understand. He let a good impresion at his last UEL QF match.
ReplyDeleteVery good appointment for Taylor. But also Orsato recieved a very good match. I think we'll see Italian Referee in a difficulty round of 16 match and the for a semifinal (quarterfinal in case of Italy qualification).
ReplyDeleteSo it seems as indeed Kovacs has been planned for only one game already before the start of the tournament. Difficult to imagine him appointed twice on MD3. The other referee with only one game could be Rapallini, we will see. Oliver gets an interesting game to start, we remember Cakir in HUN - POR, while Taylor a big one after the good performance in DEN - FIN.
ReplyDeleteOrsato in Spain - Poland is justified by MD1 results, with both teams looking for 3 points.
Strange management to see an Elite referee with an EL QF and CL R16 in the past season planned for one game, while a Cat1 referee (Siebert) has already been appointed twice. If your hypothesis is correct of course.
DeleteGiven that there are other referees who are ranked below Kovacs (Category 1 is below Elite, of course) and they are getting more than one game (Siebert), we can easily draw the conclusion (my opinion of course), that this is based rather on the country of the referees involved, so political choices. Germany had to present two referees, so Siebert is the alternative to Zwayer, Stieler and Aytekin, while Ekberg represents Scandinavian refereeing. We can't say the same for Romania, the country has already a referee, Hategan, so this can explain why Kovacs was called but maybe only for one game (we will see) or in any case less than other referees. If we stay at Elite referees, one must also add the argument that he is the least experienced in big games, surely less than names like Grinfeeld and Vincic, who were promoted together with him as Elite, and indeed they are getting very likely more.
DeleteI think at the end this can explain the situation.
Excellent Analysis Chefren! Excellent!! One can even say after being called up to the EUROs no one is looking at the two category 1 referees as really category 1, everyone gets the same treatment at the treatment and also Politics will be used in situations like this!!!
DeleteIt could also be, that Kovacs is planned for a second match in the round of 16. I can't imagine Ekberg or Siebert in a knock-out match. That way he'd have his second match, and a bit more high profile, as he earned this season.
DeleteWow, in the MD 2 2 Referee prediction (Grinfeld & Taylor) and 2 Fourth Official prediction (Oliver & Cakir)!!!
ReplyDeleteYess. Nice one for Oliver
ReplyDeleteWell done on the two English referees getting the Group F games.
ReplyDeleteAfter the disturbing incident in the Denmark v Finland game, I hope Taylor is up for this one mentally. It might have been easier if he’d been awarded a game with a bit less importance attached.
I always remember one of our old referee observers saying ‘a game is only as easy as you make it’
Good luck to Taylor though, hope he does well.
In Spain - Poland we have the first appointment with all VAR officials coming from only one nation, it didn't happen before. Would have been even more particular to see fourth and fifth official coming from Italy as well, but I think this is impossible, because in all games there must be representatives from different countries in such a tournament.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I'm misunderstanding your comment, Chefren, but Del Cerro Grandes VAR team was only one nation (ESP) as well.
DeleteSorry you are right, full Spanish team. I had missed that.
DeleteIrrati appointed again as main VAR after his blunder in HUNPOR. Italians are untouchable.
ReplyDeleteHe actually did well in HUNPOR - why not appointing him Again with Orsato?
DeleteIn my opinion, no intervention at DOGSO-holding penalty was the biggest mistake of the tournament. I don't find any argument to back up the yellow card issued by Cakir.
DeleteIf you want to polemicise or provoke, Italians are even less untouchable than Dutchies and Spanish. Makkelie and his team have been ridiculous in the last months, goal disallowed for Portugal, offside on corner kick was a joke. Clear handball forgotten by VAR. And what about Del Cerro and his 'poor' performance (as judged by the forum). They have been both appointed again immediately.
DeleteOh my gosh, that's non-sense. I don't even want to response to it, because your behavior is too aggressive. Makkelie is a very promising referee with two mistakes (even by ARs) in recent time - referees are human beings, not machines. Those mistakes are very excusable. About other referees/performances, commitee's opinion surely differs to yours.
DeleteFurqan Miah, we are all fed up of your constant polemicising of the debate and fanboy attitude, please go elsewhere to discuss your hagiography project of a certain referee, thanks.
ReplyDeleteExpectable appointments. I think, Kovacs will get one match only.
ReplyDeleteI would have liked to observe Rocchi at EURO 2020. Rocchi and Orsato: what an italian extraordinary couple that would have been!
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting to debate who is better: Rocchi or Orsato. IMO Rocchi deserved to get a CL final prior to Orsato, but I think because of Chelsea-Ajax, this did not happen.
DeleteRocchi was by far more my cup of tea stylewise. I think it depends on what you like. For me im not a fan of Orsatos style at all. Far too "lazy" for me.
DeleteThe reason why Rocchi didn't get a CL final was not Chelsea-Ajax. In fact, he received another big match in CL as farewell immediately after Chelsea-Ajax. The reason for Rocchi (early) retirement has been nonsense AIA governance. The president of AIA (Italian Referees Committee) decided to withdraw Rocchi from international lists in December 2019, so that it was impossible for him to get the CL final at the end of the season (Rocchi was by far for CL final 2020 n.1 candidate over Lahoz and Orsato). Because of AIA's crazy governance, both Rocchi and Manganelli (Orsato's CL final AR1) were forced to retire at the end of the season at the age of 45. What's more, the day after their retirement the newly elected president of AIA Trentalage removed age limits, allowing slighlty younger referees like Orsato to end their career at 47/48. Thanks to this rule, AIA made it possible to have an Italian referee (Orsato) both at EURO and World Cup 2022. Otherwise, there would have been none (the reason why there are not Italian referees at top UEFA level is due to that AIA governance and the splitting of Serie A and B groups back in 2010). The result? Rocchi is perfectly in shape (still runs like a 30yo) but was forced to retire being denied a certain CL final and a EURO). Orsato is struggling physically and has been allowed to end his career later than Rocchi. Luckily, the old AIA governance has been removed, and we hope to see the results of the restructuring by the new president in 5/10 years from now.
DeleteTo end my post, I will tell my personal opinion about Rocchi vs Orsato. They are both excellent referees but their style and personality is totally different.
DeleteRocchi: born in Florence, law-enforcer style, very athletic, calm and professional personality, modern-looking style
Orsato: born in a small village in the Alps, authoritarian, not very athletic, very rough and genuine personality (he respects players if he gets respected by them), old-style refereeing (inspired to Agnolin, top Italian ref from Orsato's region back in the 80s, once he defended his AR by pushing away players). Main strength: control over players and intense communication using his regional dialect (can't use this strength at UEFA level for cultural barriers)
