Wow i checked the del Cerro Grande twice. I didn't expect so soon 2nd appointment after yesterday
ReplyDeleteSame...
DeleteReally odd. Only 3 days after his first match which was only partly convincing.
DeleteI'm happy for Siebert. Deserved second appointment.
Lahoz a safe bet for the British clash.
Del Cerro again ? So quickly... Well... But This is a less important designation, which is deserved in light of yesterday’s mixed performance. This is a well-deserved match for Mateu and Siebert who have performed very well so far!
ReplyDelete3 second appointments. I have to say I think it is well deserved for Siebert, happy for him.
ReplyDeleteHe has already managed something good (and maybe unexpected) in this competition
Spanish big fest XD
ReplyDeleteCerro with his second appointment after yesterdays below par display just baffles me....
ReplyDeleteI predicted Lahoz for England - Scotland right... Hope he perform well!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous15 June 2021 at 23:21
ReplyDeleteBelieve my words. He will not be appointed again. Some referees will do one match only in GS and Cerro will be one of them. We are talking about EURO level. This is not expected level of refereeing.
:D
It can be his last match before Round of 16 and Spain can be represented by Mateu ? It's important to say that appointment is less important than France-Germany
DeleteLets be real. Performance wise after the bar is set so high the only plane Cerro should have been on is the plane home. However Rosetti has already made his plan thats clear to me. After these appointments the only thing i can see from kuipers not getting the final is the netherlands being in it. Since a performance below par doesnt seem to matter...
DeleteNo, that’s not important at all as there are only a few matches with the importance and as sonorous as FRA-GER.
DeleteAnyway so far it seems that all hot guns (UEFA’s top elite) will have 1 (very) sonorous match and 1 less important and sonorous. Which makes sense because of the limited number of really big matches in GS.
Unexpected del Cerro Grande appointed again so early after his first game. Regardless of the performance, I would have expected him in case later. Well, I'm starting to think that Kovacs and Oliver have maybe some troubles impeding an appointment? Very strange they are still without games.
ReplyDeleteI would have liked Oliver on Croatia - Czech Republic and not Del Cerro...
DeleteI doubt that Oliver would have been appointed to a match in the same group England is playing in...
DeleteImpossible because that is same group as England
DeleteOh oups... Sorry. I forgot. So, Kovacs ?
DeleteI guess that Oliver could get Spain vs Poland. And about Kovacs who is a rookie for this competition, I expected for him the Netherlands - North Macedonia game. I don't think Kovacs will get Italy last match or Finland vs Belgium.
DeleteI don't think Oliver will get Spain-Poland (very important match since both lost/draw their opening matches). I believe Oliver will get Hungary-Portugal, Orsato will get Germany-Portugal and Brych will get Spain-Poland
DeleteWhy would Kovacs be more of a rookie for this competition than Oliver is?
DeleteI assume that Oliver could have been retained for Group F in order to handle HUNFRA or PORGER with the other match going to Taylor.
DeleteOliver??? When??
ReplyDeletecertainly didn't expect to see Del Grande so quickly! With the Spanish doing both games in one group could we see the English duo handle group F matches and the German duo handle group E?
ReplyDeleteSiebert with his second appointment as 1st Category referee - great achievement for him and he definetly deserves that. The match itself is actually quite interesting and could challenge him more than the first one.
ReplyDeleteI'm not too surprised that Del Cerro Grande gets a second appointment, but the short time period between the matches is interesting. I think, committee wasn't too unhappy about yesterday's performance. If he does well in CROCZE, KO appointment could be possible.
Mateu Lahoz' appointment is expectable.
Orsato for POR-GER i think.
ReplyDeleteAnthony Taylor is my guess.
DeleteDeserved for Siebert, who somehow was the only "not big name" available (Ekberg and Vincic obviously not possible, Kovacs 4th in SVK's first match and today, Oliver's nation in the same group, others appointed today and tomorrow).
ReplyDeleteDel Cerro Grande not expected due to the short rest time. The game actually seems quite crucial for 2nd place in the group - so a sensible appointment given the apparent trust by UEFA in him.
Mateu one of the expected choices for the British derby.
UEFA seems to like two referees from the same nation in one group and this trend could continue, if group E goes to two Germans and group F goes to two Englishmen. Seems a realistic scenario - but obviously not forced.
Correction: Oliver would have been available for SWE-SVK - but still unlikely after his 4O appointment today.
DeleteI think del Cerro, contrary to Çakır, was just good, expected level given the match difficulty and the number of key match incidents he had to assess. I praise Rosetti for seeing it like it was.
ReplyDeleteSeveral penalty appeals were correctly rejected. Possible second YC/RC at 40'? Yes, but no proofs it was deliberate. Penalty at 78? Nah, no significant contact. Violent conduct by Rüdiger? The biting was not so clear. Unnecessary YC at the beginning and goal disallowed after VAR intervention? Nothing serious.
Notice that 2 Spanish VARs out of 4 have been replaced with Italian VARs Di Bello & Irrati. Does this mean anything about yesterday's potential PK decision?
ReplyDeleteIn any case, great physical effort for Del Cerro to handle 2 games in only four days! He showed excellent fitness yersterday!
No, they had to split them because they want Spanish VARs in both matches of Spanish referees.
DeleteSo I think Brych for Spain-Poland
ReplyDeleteTaylor for Portugal-Germany
Oliver for Hungary-France
Do refereeing ‘teams’ still get marked as such? I recall Graham Poll / Howard Webb both saying ‘we’re in this as a team, if one of us fail the whole team fail’
ReplyDeleteWe’ve had a few bad AR decisions this Euro but it hasn’t affected the appointments.
Maybe the current referee teams haven’t got their ‘eye on the ball’ just as much as referees in the past, and think … ‘if we miss it or get it wrong, VAR will pick it up’ just a thought.
Ps/ having watched Siebert at Hampden on Monday, I’m not as excited about this referee as some. Personally thought he was average at best, and for him, I was glad there was no major incidents in the game, he didn’t look as if he’d have known how to deal with things.
Shock-Shock-Shock. Del Cerro again. I mean why? Kovacs would be perfect for this game. And Cakir 4th, who was good at Hun-Por? So Del Cerro is awarded for yesterday game? I don't understand.

There is an absolute winner, he's Rosetti. He had the courage to appoint Cerro in the most important match of the qualifiers and he responded with a great performance, zero controversy, nobody talks about him. Rosetti won. Cerro won
ReplyDeleteGreat performance. Sorry, I really like him and his style but the 1st half was less than average... Very soft YC Kimmich, not any consistent line in foul detection, bad communication and card management, missed RC for Rüdiger's biting in Pogbas neck... 2nd half was better, so all in all a bit less than average.
DeleteI am very happy for Daniel Siebert. He can be proud about what he has achieved. It was not so clear that he would get a second match before EURO but, in my view, it is deserved after his good performance in SCO-CZE. Maybe he will get some appointments as FO after that.
ReplyDeleteMateu Lahoz for ENG-SCO is a decent, expected choice. I hope and think he will do well.
Del Cerro Grande's appointment after yesterday (I called it a performance "below average) can be both, a good or a bad sign. We can definitely guess that his appointment has already been made before yesterday's performance and it has just been confirmed. So, on the one hand UEFA did not evaluate his performance as too weak to get a second match, on the other hand it is maybe not a sign of trust either. I can imagine that his second match will be his last one.
It was also expected that Oliver and Kovacs are still not appointed as a referee. As I have said earlier, the only possible appointments for them are HUN-FRA, ESP-POL and GER-POR (which I would exclude). Until now, there are two free days between the appointments, so I expect Oliver and Kovacs to be appointed for 19/06 or one of them will get one match only.
I fully agree.
DeleteGenerally agreed, but - definitely guessing that the 2nd appointment was made before yesterday’s game - why “on the other hand it is maybe not a sign of trust either”? What should have been a sign of trust in your view?
Delete"Not a sign of trust" because the appointment could be read as his last match, that he would not get a match in KO-stage. It would be very surprising to see del Cerro Grande getting a third group stage match. As the appointment has already been planned before yesterday's performance, I think UEFA just thought like that: "Too weak for the planned second match or no?" and decided to go with the latter. Therefore, the "real consideration" of yesterday's performance is still unclear.
DeleteFor me, it would have been a bigger sign of trust if he got a match on MD3. But indeed, this is speculation. Maybe he will get a KO-match, then everything what I have said is obsolete.
I think the point is that Grande didn't get this appointment because of his performance yesterday. So we cannot say that this is a sign of trust in him based on his performance yesterday. But we can be sure they had trust before FRA-GER. What they think about his performance is unknown.
DeleteBut if the appointment was made already before yesterday’s performance, on which I agree actually, the MD2 or MD3 2nd appearance was also already decided before yesterday’s match. So that sign of trust (or lack of that) can’t be a result of yesterday’s game, but should have existed before.
DeleteAnyway I think all group stage matches were planned beforehand, and during group stage committee only asks the question you already mentioned: “1st performance sufficient to keep the 2nd standing?”
And after having had the most sonorous game in MD1 it’s not too odd to have a less sonorous 2nd. Top guns like Mateu, Brych, Taylor and Turpin all had average 1st games, probably most will have more sonorous 2nd.
BTW, a 3rd match for del Cerro Grande in GS is also unlikely, because he is not available for groups D-F. And an earlier appointment would mean again only 2 rest days.
DeleteIMO, he is still a candidate for a R16 match, if he shows a convincing performance on Friday.
I am glad that Rosetti drew the correct conclusion from yesterday evening but I am really not a fan of this next appointment for Carlos del Cerro Grande.
ReplyDeleteAfter two very good showings at WC 2006, Graham Poll was immediately appointed to the very high risk CROAUS game, by far the hardest game of the competition as it turned out, a mission impossible.
Poll only had three days rest after KSAUKR and I feel for him because he was visibly mentally and physically fatigued at the end of an unbelievable game, even besides the SYC trouble.
Referees are human beings and need time to physically and emotionally rest - of course, del Cerro is a different athletic profile to Poll, but most certainly he was physically extended in FRAGER.
So, I think in principle he is a good choice for CROCZE and performance-wise it is deserved, but personally I much sooner warm to more formulaic approach to appointments as we had under Pierluigi Collina.
some good points, mikael. i think, just like you, that the physical aspect is not an issue for del cerro. however, i think the mental part is the bigger one here. comittee puts a lot of pressure on a referee in a match, where both teams need to win to make it to the next round. the referee was struggling yesterday, and i think observer and comittee were not too satisfied with his performance.
Deletei think del cerro has the main problem that he knows he is "only no2". he wanted to impress everybody and step out of the shade of lahoz. i think that went quite the opposite way, right?
so now he has even more pressure. it is his 2nd last chance, as i think fra-ger was already a last chance to see, if he can be nominated for r16 and further. i keep my fingers crossed for him and hope for the best. i admit i dont like his style, however he is a great sportsman who has achieved a lot so far, and that sports spirit should be supported
19/06 Games:
ReplyDeleteHUN - FRA
POR - GER
ESP - POL
Regarding Kovács, I think he can't handle Hungary. Impossible to see him in Portugal - Germany, so only chance is Spain - Poland.
Oliver: on paper, he could get all three games, but I rather would exclude him from POR - GER.
It is possible that one of them will appear only on MD3. This would very likely mean only one game.
What if:
HUN - FRA Oliver
ESP - POL Kovács?
I don't really believe Kovacs will get ESP-POL
Deletea) Hategan had Poland on MD1 (with Kovavs as 4th)
b) The match seems too big, especially after MD1 results.
Furthermore many top referees are available for that match.
And yes, that should mean, that Kovacs will only get one match.
Hard to imagine Kovacs in Poland because he was VO in their game against Slovakia.
DeleteMatch between SWEDEN - SLOVAKIA observer from Turkey who has not been a FIFA referee. UEFA ignores its own instructions in such a tournament. Rossetti and his team should explain this.
ReplyDeleteThe UEFA directive states that a person without a FIFA badge cannot be an observer. How did Murat Ilgaz become an observer?
Deletethats not correct. eugen striegel, one of the most prominent and well-liked observers in europe has never been on the fifa list and he was observer in almost every major tournament in the last 20 years by fifa or uefa. and please copy the paragraph that states it would be compulsory to be on a former fifa-referee/assistant. i would be interested to see and read it. or post a link to the document, please.
DeleteStriegel was one of Tritschler's ARs in the 1989 Champions Cup final AC Milan - Steaua.
DeleteThis is the text from UEFA circular about UEFA match officials and Instructors. It sent by UEFA to all FA's at December 2019.
DeleteReferee observers:
1. Please review the list of current referee observers and confirm the names of the referee observers you would like to nominate for the 2020-2022 period.
2. Should you wish to propose a new referee observer candidate, you may do so only under the following conditions:
a. To replace a current referee observer.
b. Where your national association has only one or two referee observer(s) confirmed, an additional candidature can be considered.
c. New candidates will be former international referees currently active in their national associations in the assessment of referees at the highest level.
3. No association should have more male or female observers than their corresponding number of male or female international referees; however, there is no automatic entitlement to equal that number.
Above text point "C is very clear. And my comment was not about "Murat Ilgaz is good observer or not". But UEFA sent circular to all FA's and FA's didnt follow their circulars and UEFA Refs Com. designate as an observer. Come on.... What kind hell is it?
Still no Kovacs or Oliver, wow
ReplyDeleteThe UEFA directive states that a person without a FIFA badge cannot be an observer. How did Murat Ilgaz become an observer?
ReplyDeleteWhy now all these questions about Murat Ilgaz and not before? He is among the most trusted observers by committee by years and he got many and many important appointments in Champions League and other competitions. So, why he shouldn't be at EURO?
DeleteDoes trusting by committee change that it is an observer against the regulations? After all, he has never been a FIFA referee. Then why are there UEFA regulations?
Delete@anonymus. there is no such regulation, that you must have been fifa referee before. that would be absolutely idiotic by uefa to imply such nonsense rules. imagine you would have a former fifa referee from gibraltar vs a ex-bundesliga referee with 250 games in professional football, whereas the guy from gibraltar maybe has had one u17 qualifier in his entire career...doenst make sense at all...
DeleteTo quote Arrigo Sacchi - "I never realised that in order to become a jockey you have to have been a horse first."
DeleteA great FIFA referee may be a very poor observer and referee developer, should the focus not be on putting those with the best skills in the best positions to develop everyone instead of being obsessed with directives that non-FIFAs cannot be in these positions?
If Murat Ilgaz was never a FIFA referee and yet observes UEFA referees (even some Elite) then it makes no sense.
DeleteHere in Greece the regulations state that you have a to be a referee 2 years on a category or 5 as AR in order to be selected for that category.
But the truth is that most of the observers can't do their job properly. Basically it's one of the reasons for the low level of refereeing.
The question by anonymous is not ‘can he do a good job’, his question is ‘if the regulation states that he can’t be an observer, why is he’, which I think is a very valid question

Point "c" is only referring to new referee observers; maybe Ilgaz became UEFA referee observer before they introduced that requirement.
DeleteOn the other hand, we all know that there are always exceptions, in football as in life. The interesting fact about Ilgaz is that he used to have a blog on refereeing, but he had to close it when he became an UEFA observer.
Murat Ilgaz is among the most trusted observers by committee by years
DeleteObserver UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg match between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, May 2, 2017.
Observer UEFA Champions League quarter final second leg match between Barcelona and Juventus on Wednesday, April 19, 2017.

Sevilla FC – Borussia Dortmund
Referee Observer: Murat Ilgaz (TUR)
17/02/2021 UEFA Champions League 2020/2021 – Round of 16 (First Leg, I)
The other "anonymous" did not question whether Ilgaz is trusted or not, but whether UEFA is applying their own written rules to everyone equally. As mentioned above, the likely answer is that Ilgaz became UEFA referee observer before the requirement of having been an international referee had been introduced.
Deletedear greek ref, how much sense does it make, that a former fifa ref from andorra, who probably never refereed a professional football game in his life, observes a referee who has, lets say 200 premier league matches? again, there is no rule, that you must have been a former fifa referee. also what do you do with those, who were on the list, but were never appointed? i think the proposed system of "merit" is not making sense at all. i imagine a briefing by a former gibraltar fifa referee, in a match at san siro with 60,000 spectators (probably as many as he had in his entire refereeing-career together) then telling the referees from premier league, la liga or bundesliga how they can become better referees...it's just hilarious sorry...
Deletethanks to anonymous for posting the uefa circular. also interesting IMO that assistant-referees are excluded completely to become observers. but well, i still make my same point again like above, even now that for new observers this rule seems to exist. i dont see anything good in this. on the other i sometimes think, that you must bring in a lot of time to become observer at international level - you travel 3 days + have to write the report and sometimes even need feedback from comittee in case of questionable calls. so you always need to take your days off in the office - or work for a football federation^^ i dont know how much they get for their job, but i dont think uefa will pay them too much...
DeleteIt is not normal for someone who has not refereed international matches to be an observer. Of course, not every former FIFA referee has to be a top-level observer. The fact is that every FA's has too many high-level observers. Just one of these criteria. But the UEFA refereeing department does not respect this. Then why are there UEFA regulations? If no one will comply.
DeleteRemaining predictions MD2
ReplyDeleteSpain-Poland: Clément Turpin
Germany-Portugal: Anthony Taylor
Hungary-France: Michael Oliver
Predictions first half MD3
Italy-Wales: István Kovács (ROU)
Switzerland-Turkey: Felix Brych (GER)
Ukraine-Austria: Daniele Orsato (ITA)
Macedonia-Netherlands: Artur Soares (pOR)
Finland-Belgium: Fernando Rapallini (ARG)
Russia-Denmark: Slavko Vincic (SVN)
I'd guess
DeleteSpain-Poland: Felix Brych
Germany-Portugal: Anthony Taylor
Hungary-France: Michael Oliver
Italy-Wales: Kovacs
Switzerland-Turkey: Hategan
I don’t think that Hațegan will get Turkey game after what happened in Paris. I expected him maybe in France vs Portugal in Budapest.
DeleteHategan will definitely not get Turkey after the UCL incidents with Basaksehir. Taking into account his strong first match, we should expect to see him in an important match, but not Turkey.
DeleteI am extremely curious about GER-POR and HUN-FRA appointments. I would go for Taylor, but then its hard to explain what is happening with Oliver. And also I dont know if it is possible to see them both, I dont remember if that ever happened before.
ReplyDeleteIs there a particular reason why England games get highly experienced fourth officials? First Kuipers, now Cakir, whereas other matches get the officials that are only fourth official or lower ranked main referees.
ReplyDeleteExtremely harsh bashing by french press against Del Cerro Grande. L’équipe (which isn’t very often hard with refereeing) talks about poor referee with PK forgotten and 2 RC possible as Rudiger bite Pogba for example. Very severe speech IMO.
ReplyDeleteIf we step into the real world and out of the refereeing bubble, we would see that German fans are mad at him, French fans think he did an awful job and neutral fans found it a terrible performance as well. We often talk about ‘expected decisions by public’, but if Rosetti would have taken the expected decision here, Del Cerro would be sent home.
DeleteAnd?
DeleteAnd perhaps Mikael can speak about his analysis withVAR stuff in this match with PK and agression by Rudiger on Pogba’s black ? ^^
DeleteBack.*
DeleteThe Cakir as FO assignment is intriguing. In my opinion there is no reason to fly an Elite referee to London given the peculiarities of travel right now unless he's going to stay in the UK for another match. So I would expect Cakir to be in London or Glasgow for MD3.
ReplyDeleteThat is what they did with Kuipers in ENG-CRO, to be fair.
DeleteSurprise with Del Cerro appointment. I predict him will get his 2nd match but that will be in the third round or R16. Regrading to Oliver and Kovacs, I think Oliver will get a game in 2nd round, and Kovacs will get a game in 3rd round. I will not be very surprised if Kovacs does not get any game.
ReplyDeleteDel Cerro Grande's performance in the Ger-Fra game was EXCELLENT (although a little shaky at in the first 20+mins).
ReplyDeleteIn such a feisty & hotly contested game, he managed to keep a strong control of the game while dishing out ONLY 1YC throughout the game.
That alone is a miracle.
I honestly do NOT understand pple's criticism of his performance. He got ALL the big decisions right. One of the strongest referee performances of the tournament in my opinion.
In addition, UEFA seem to agree that his performance was sublime yesterday, hence his 2nd appointment.
I hope that Kovacs AR2 is ok, and this could be the answer why Kovacs didn’t have a game till now. He could have Italy -Wales, Netherlands vs North Macedonia, Austria vs Ukraine, Scotland vs Croatia or England -Czech Republic. We will see the appointments from Friday. By the way, we will have match prediction for the last stage in the group?
ReplyDeleteIs there an issue with Kovacs's AR2?
Delete
