No surprises here then!
ReplyDeleteThat’s why Hugh Dallas was replaced with Ceferin for yesterday’s match, so that he could observe at home.

DeleteOn the VAR side, the following officials have not been appointed in the R16:
ReplyDeletePinheiro, Letexier, Brisard, Sanchez, Pages
So maybe they are not in Nyon anymore.
Deserved. Without surprise.
ReplyDeleteQF : Vincic, Hategan, Kuipers & ? (Not CdC please)
Oliver maybe?
DeleteAnd I really hope not CdC!
Probably (he's best than CdC)
DeleteHe's the last ref possible.
Undeserved for Makkelie...
ReplyDeleteQF - Vincic, Hategan, Kuipers, Oliver
ReplyDeleteSF/F - Brych, Kuipers, Taylor (depending on teams)
I would prefer Vincic or Hategan instead for the dutch ref
ReplyDeleteAs an English man, makkelie seems the better choice. Vincic and hategan are good referees who I would happily but makkelie has proved himself more consistently and is the sort of big name such a game would warrant
DeleteI must say I am a bit surprised with Makkelie. No doubt he is a great referee, but Rosetti clearly said that one of three mistakes in group stage is that no penalty call in TUR-ITA. So the referee who made one of those three crucial mistakes is now appointed for one of the most sonorous matches. Even if Lahoz's or Turpin's mistakes were remaining two mentioned, I would not be surprised if both of them are appointed in QF or even SF.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, they're will not.
DeleteBecause a penalty not given for a handball which can be discussed? Kuipers missed a clear penalty instead and nobody wants him to leave.. Be realistic.
Delete@Anonymous: There is a difference between Kuipers's and Makkelie's situation. At the end, after VAR intervention, Kuipers made correct call, Makkelie did not.
Delete@Referee 12: I assume we also recognize the difference between Mateu and Turpin penalties, where both referee’s had open view and were able to make full informed decisions, and Makkelie penalty where he only had a slight angle of vision to the incident. And for Turpin the penalty was not the only flaw that evening.
DeleteBut we will know sooner rather than later if we see Mateu and Turpin again. My guess is no.
In my opinion the interpretation by committee is clear and I will try to explain why there is a difference between Turkey - Italy, the handball, and the soft penalties whisteld by Turpin and Mateu Lahoz. In the case of TUR - ITA, Makkelie very likely didn't see the handball properly, VAR decided not to intervene, thinking about something different. So, we can't say whether Makkelie had whistled it or not, we don't have a direct proof, in other words, Makkelie didn't do anything wrong ny himself.
DeleteDifferently, Mateu Lahoz and Turpin whistled penalties that were extremely soft, VAR couldn't intervene in all cases, so the responsibility of the mistakes belong to main referees.
So, the missed situations like Makkelie in the opener, Kuipers in SVK - ESP, Orsato in ESP - POL and so on, are not so much serious for committee. Indeed, Orsato has a game as well, while Kuipers is expected for quarterfinals. That's what I think and for this reason, I'm not surprised to see them, committee seems to act in this way at this tournament.
And for committee seems enough to switch the VARs regarding the faults for the hanbdall in TUR - ITA.
DeleteThough Mateu’s Spanish VAR was also substituted to AVAR in Rapallini’s game. So I think Hernández Hernández punished for the second penalty whistled after all?
DeleteQuarterfinals: given that we should expect referees not appointed in Round of 16 (unless very extra-ordinary cases) then names should be among Hategan, Kuipers, Oliver, Vincic, Del Cerro. For one of them, EURO is already over.
ReplyDeleteI hope it's finish for Del Cerro. He's the only ref in this list to undeserved a QF (or maximum 4th official)
Delete@Chefren: Do we now officialy (except Grinfeeld) who is sent home? This refers to my previous comment on Turpin and Lahoz... I cant imagine Del Cerro getting the match after his performance in SCO-CRO.
DeleteSorry, k is missing there - do we know...
DeleteThe problem with Oliver is that if all the favs win he can only get ITA-Bel or SPA-FRA. I don't think committee would want to give him one of those two stunners. If England looses, I can see him getting NED-SWE in the QFs
DeleteNo, we don't know anything officially apart from Grinfeeld and maybe Soares Dias. But according to Rosetti words I think it will be impossible to see Turpin and Mateu in any case.
DeleteRegarding the names I mentioned, I fear that EURO could be already over for Vincic, because Del Cerro is liked and he could be among the referees getting a quarterfinal.
Then, I would say Oliver should come first before Vincic, Kuipers is expected, so maybe it will be the Slovenian to stay out.
Reading his name in QFs would be a more than pleasant surprise for me.
Hategan is the only one out of those five with a 4th official appointment. Maybe a small indicator against him - maybe not relevant at all.
DeleteIf GER will beat ENG, I would not exlude Brych from an appointment in the quarterfinal: It could become his last chance for a further EURO assignment and especially the (possible) match FRA-ESP would be very suitable for him. On the other hand, Taylor could be retained for a semifinal in that case.
DeleteNo surprises in those remaining R16 matches.
ReplyDeleteMy first guesses for the following duels are:
QF: Vincic, Hategan, Kuipers, del Cerro Grande (Oliver only with outsider chances in my book, as one ENG referee is already doing well in the KO stage, while - without del Cerro - no ESP referee would officiate a KO match)
SF/F: Taylor, Brych, Kuipers
Great appointment for Makkelie and totally deserved. A debatable handball is not a big mistake. In that case Kuipers (missed penalty), Orsato (missed penalty) should also not be appointed any more. Come on, referees can make mistakes. People here just like to see Makkelie leaving. He is one of the best referees we have in UEFA. And the difference with Lahoz and Turpin is their attitude on the field of play and poor management skills.
ReplyDeleteThe Dutch fanclub in action: A poor managerial skills by Lahoz?!?!?! Hahaha... Just wait for the games of Makkelie and Kuipers...
DeleteJust explain why Blom after the first match is only appointed als AVAR1 and van Boekel is now the main var in both dutch teams. For sure somebody is punished by Rosetti for this penalty and It looks like it is Blom and not Makkelie
DeleteI believe Kuipers an Vincic are a lock for QF now.
ReplyDeleteAfter those two it gets harder. Oliver convinced me more in the group stage compared to Hategan and DC. However I feel like the other two will probably get the two other QFs.
Prediction (if favs win):
ITA-BEL: Vincic
FRA-SPA: Kuipers
NED-DEN: Hategan
ENG-SWE: Del Cerro
So, if Kuipers does not make a terrible mistake in QF and his country does not qualify, he is sure for the Final! Hategan and Oliver (and CDCG) are out, Vinčić could be a big surprise but far fetched. The other option would be that a referee skips from round of 16 to final.
ReplyDeleteHowever, there are a lot of games to be played, real tests for Brych and Rapallini, who could be a candidate for SF also.
And that would mean that everything said by Nijhuis is true and UEFA referee committee is ruled by not so honest people... And just as I remember how shocked and angry at Nijhuis some people were...
DeleteCommittee will not appoint Kuipers for the final!
DeleteI guess if NL is not in the final and Kuipers doesnt screw things up a la Mateu im quite sure that Kuipers is the frontrunner for the final together with Brych
DeleteKuipers maybe is one of the candidates for the final, objectively he has not the top form for it. Sorry, Kuipers since WC 2018 is not the same Kuipers before WC 2018. Brych, Cakir, Hategan, Taylor, they all have better tournament than Bjorn...
DeleteAnd also Siebert, Karasev, or Rappalini.
DeleteIn Euro 2016 Skomina did the R16+QF double, while Eriksson went straight from GS to SF. So we cannot be sure to see 12 different refs in R16+QF.
ReplyDeletesafe pair of hands for both matches. due to tournament tree i think we can guess, that kuipers is kept for one of the BIG quarterfinals (italy-belgium, france-spain). oliver only has one match so far. also think he is going to be in the lottery for a qf (denmark-holland or germany-sweden). there will be two quarterfinals that could count as finals (ita-bel, esp-fra). kuipers very likely to get ita-bel...but who will get the other one? for me brych or taylor...
ReplyDeleteThese appointments make sense after yesterday’s appointments. So we will see Kuipers, Hategan, Vincic, Oliver(Del Cerro) at QF.
ReplyDeleteSF: Taylor, Cakir(Brych)
F: Brych (Cakir)
++++1
DeleteI don´t think we will see Hategan again. He got two quite low profile group stage games and is the only one used as a fourth official (together with Ekberg). Makes sense, the only big match he got since the Paris incident was MCI-DOR and he screwed up big time.
DeleteDel Cerro, Oliver, Vincic and Kuipers in QF.
And after last night I'm pretty sure Kuipers is on his way to the final. I expect Taylor and Cakir in semi's.
OT: Just out of interest, can someone please tell me where are the referees based during the tournament?
ReplyDeleteIn Turkey, they fly almost every day for the destinations of the tournament.
Deletewell...some fly bit more than others :-)
DeleteThanks
DeleteExpected appointment for the ENG v GER match IMHO. I did however think that Orsato may well have been saved for a QF fixture!
ReplyDeleteHere’s my take on things, not that it’s worth a lot as I’ve been wrong plenty of times during the last few weeks hah!
If we go by the performance principle, reading the comments (apologies if I have read this wrongly), out of the 5 remaining referees left without a match in the KO stage, then surely Oliver & Vinic should get a QF match at least.
Again, judging by the general comments on here, there is debate regarding Kuipers, but overall the consensus is that he should get a further match (probably a QF as a minimum).
The debate for me revolves around CDG and Hategan. If UEFA deemed that Hatgean’s red cards were acceptable and support him, then he should receive another match. If however, they do not want to see such debatable/controversial decisions (as perceived with Lahoz & Turpin, who we believe have been sent home) then, his last appointment was 4th official in the RO16 games and they kept him purely for that purpose (as with Ekberg).
With CDG, I think a little easier to understand. If UEFA deemed that BOTH matches were up to the required level, then he should receive another appointment.
If I were a betting man, I think the clue is with Hategan’s appointment as 4th official and believe that his decisions may just have cost him a further match in the tournament. I would guess CDG will receive a QF appointment.
But, I have been wrong on many occasions, so, we may well yet see another surprise!
So in SWE-UKR we have the first match with the entire refereeing team from 1 country: Italy.
ReplyDeletenope, that has been the case several times in this Euro.
DeleteNo, the 4th and 5th officials didn't come from the same country as the rest of the team, so this is the first time in this tournament.
DeleteMy predictions for final, according to blog
ReplyDeleteReferee Kuipers
AR1 Taylor
AR2 Brych
Fourth off. Cakir
Fifth off. Makkelie
Ball boys Lahoz,,Rapallini,Vincic and Siebert
Now all fans r happy..
Cakir never final because Ceferin is mad at him.
DeleteDoes this mean the end for Oliver at this tournament?
ReplyDeleteNot necessarily, perhaps he will officiate directly the final.
DeleteFinal ? What a laugh ! QF yes, probably
DeleteUnaspected appointments. So Orsato Will officiate final of Italy forse out Friday.
ReplyDeleteMakkelie is a top referee, but whistle offside after corner Kick was reason to sent home directly. Brych and Kuipers were muy favourites for final Game, but their performances have been very improvables. Taylor os now muy winner horse
ReplyDeleteFull Italian team for SWE-UKR. It's the first time in this competition.
