  1. This basically confirms Kuipers for England/Germany

    1. Kuipers or Makkelie confirmed.

      Delete
    2. Possibly Oliver we shall see. Makkelie for ENG-GER might be tough because he does not have the best reputation with the England fans

      Delete
    3. As if Uefa will have a poll and asking English fans for permission before possible Makkelie appointment, don’t make me laugh.
Curious of serious and reliable information, Mikael W, doesn’t Makkelie generally have a good reputation in England?

      Delete
    4. That’s not what I said lol. Do you not know that referees who have bad performances are purposely kept away from the the team for a long time? It’s to protect the referee not the fans

    5. Sorry, I read your post thrice in the meantime and that’s exactly what you said…
“ Makkelie for ENG-GER might be tough because he does not have the best reputation with the England fans”.
You didn’t mention performance, you speak about reputation with the fans. And enlighten me, which bad performances of Makkelie in England’s games are you talking about?

      Delete
    6. Enlighten me of your identity lol, big man giving talk on anonymous

Makkelie disallowed a late England equaliser vs Spain at Wembley for a foul of the goalkeeper which was controversial. He has only done 1 England game since.

Makkelie most probably won’t referee another Portugal match anytime soon either, after his AR failed to spot the ball had crossed the line from Ronaldo’s shot. Diks obviously got axed but I doubt the Portugal players know that, or care. If truth be told.

    7. And you were borne Furqan Miah? Sure ;p
But making reference to anonymous status of user won’t help making your point.

Most probably you’re right with your statement in the last paragraph. The same goes for Oliver who hasn’t been involved in Italian games for a long time and will go as well for eg Turpin after Russia-Denmark.

If however every ‘controversial’ decision would lead to a referee not being appointed for the harmed team involved then we would lack a sufficient number of officials. And if he also had 1 England game since I don’t see the issue anyway.

    8. FYI - Furqan Miah is STILL banned and I still intend to delete all of his comments, but now there is no point as this discussion does at least add some value to the blog discussion.

Makkelie - few here probably even remember the Nations League game (at first I even had to scratch my head to recall it), and... it was a Nations League game for heaven's sake!

I doubt that many people could namecheck Larrionda/Espinosa, or even their nationality, to be quite honest about it.

Personally, I think this game fits perfectly for what UEFA are trying to do with Kuipers, so I expect his name.

    9. I expect Kuipers, Makkelie or Orsato for England vs Germany. But I think there are also another names possible: Vincic or Hategan for example...

      Delete
    10. Lorrionda is easy Uruguay. His dreadfully bad performance in USA Italy WC 06 that's one name I'll never forget

      Delete
  2. Hernández Hernández, like Blom, switched to AVAR c. a controversial incident, so beyond reasonable doubt we can say that UEFA assessed Hernández's non-intervention in PORFRA a mistake?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hernández was VAR for both of Rapallini's previous games.

      Delete
    2. In case (but we can't know of course) I wouldn't rule out the situation in the last minutes of that game, as well, both penalty and RC possible, given that regarding the wrong penalty whistled by Mateu in my opinion there shouldn't have been room for an intervention.

      Delete
  3. Hdz Hdz seems to be replaced as VAR of Rapallini. Maybe UEFA wanted an intervention for the 2nd penalty in FRA-POR?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Well deserved for Rapallini

    ReplyDelete
  5. Ekberg isn't sent home

    ReplyDelete
  6. Two deserved and sensible appointments, I think.
In both cases, one could have considered keeping them for the QFs, but apparently UEFA has other plans there - or appoints referees in both rounds.
Ekberg still in the tournament means that the rumours were at least not 100% accurate (unless he had left Istanbul and is now travelling to Copenhagen from Sweden).
Irrati not the VAR for Cakir as in both GS and some CL matches, so maybe UEFA didn't like something? Let's see whether Orsato and Irrati still will get a game together though.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It is well possible that Ekberg is kept there as some sort of backup for unexpected vacancies (in case of injuries, Corona infections or a number of abysmal performances of other officials).

      Delete
  7. Dankert, Dingert, Gittelmann three days in a row part of VAR-team

    ReplyDelete
  8. Yes another important thing to underline is that Ekberg is still there.
So you can see, as long as something is not official... it is impossible to be sure!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Cakir for the first match: I would have prefered Oliver though. The turkish also changes his VAR. Irrati was free (infact he acts as AVAR3 in Rapallini's team). The Argentinian receives a more sonorous match than his two previous ones. Hope he will do well, like he did.
Hernandez becomes AVAR: his 2 non-intervention (penalty for France and possible RC/PK in the end) were considered (with all the probabilities) uncorrect. I agree with UEFA.

Rosetti could have dared a bit much in Croatia-Spain. So now it's clear that one between Orsato and Kuipers will get the other big match. I think the Italian. Kuipers IMO will handle Sweden-Ukraine and then he'll go directly to the final act.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Only if the Netherlands falters and doesn't make it to the final.

      Delete
  10. Well deserved appointments. So this means Orsato will have R16 game with Irrati.

    ReplyDelete
  11. With only two Round of 16 remaining, I think that somebody between Oliver and Vincic could miss the chance for a KO game. I rather think that Vincic will get SWE - UKR. The solution for Oliver would be directly a quarterfinal, do you think possible for him?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Didn't Vinic have Spain/Sweden in MD1? I would have thought they would try and avoid the same teams with refs (the only reason Brych was appointed is surely to test him). So I think Vinic will go direct to a QF
I think one of the dutch officials is sure for ENG/GER, then either Del Grande/Orsato/ Oliver for the other game (Del Grande my pick) which will give Oliver & Orsato a QF with Vinic along with the other Dutch man not appointed in the ENG/GER game.

      Delete
    2. If we assume, the 13 referees reported are indeed correct, we have del Cerro Grande, Hategan, Kuipers, Makkelie, Oliver, Orsato and Vincic left for normally 6 matches (double appointment in R16 and QF or someone direct in SF is not impossible).
Based only on GS performances, dCG and Orsato should be in most danger of missing out. However, their general status and their nationality probably keeps them in. Then we have Hategan, where we don't know, how UEFA evaluated his sending-offs. If they didn't like at least one of them, he could be the one missing out, because he doesn't have the status of the other two, I think.
Then we have Kuipers and Makkelie. The first should be completely sure for another game, while Makkelie the only doubt would be the missing penalty in TUR-ITA - however still very likely to be appointed.
And then the two least experienced on UEFA level, Oliver and Vincic, who didn't do much wrong in the GS and would deserve a KO match. Indeed there are some doubts, whether UEFA would put Oliver to a direct QF, especially as the two options could be FRA-ESP and BEL-ITA.

In short: Really hard to give a precise prediction, several solutions would be somehow justified. If I had to guess now, I would say, that Oliver indeed gets a QF and Hategan will stay without further match in the centre.

      Delete
    3. Yea Cheffren. I think it's possible for Oliver to get a QF game. At least the committee is showing in this tournament that ut rewards performances and not just pedigree. And we see this with the appointments of Siebert, Karasev and Rapallini. So if these refeees could get matches in R16, I am sure that Oliver and Vincic who were brilliant in the GS could get QF games if they dont get a R16 game.

      Delete
    4. I think it's absolutely possible Oliver gets a QF. He'd be very unlucky to not get a knockout game based both on performance principle, and that IMO he has been better than Siebert who did receive an R16 match. I would guess Kuipers and dCG for the remaining R16 matches.

I could see the four QFs going to Hategan, Vincic, Oliver, and Makkelie. It wouldn't surprise me, if Orsato is left off the R16 list, to see him directly in a SF (Taylor or Brych/Kuipers in the other).

      Delete
  12. Regarding France - Switzerland in my opinion this round of 16 is something very good for Rapallini, the right game for him. A medium level among the Round of 16 games. I would have guessed him rather in SWE - UKR or WAL - DEN, given the background, but committee seems to have an important trust.
Now an appointment for Gil Manzano in KO stage will follow, I want also to say that it looks like CONMEBOL is waiting for UEFA decisions about Rapallini's games, to make the same with Gil Manzano.
Otherwise it could sound poor to give him a different treatment, did you get this impression as well? ;) But of course basically they must perform well!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Gil Manzano had difficult moments in his last game due to a penalty expectation. With a long VAR check they allowed to play on. Maybe committee will find them mistaken i am not sure.

      Delete
    2. If there is time, probably between the R16 now and the QF, I'll watch this Ecuador - Peru game in full and report back.

      Delete
  13. IMO last 2 games will go to Orsato(because of Irrati appointment) and Makkelie or Kuipers. If ENG-GER goes to Orsato then we can consider some other names but i don’t think we will see 2 dutch referee teams at QF. So Vincic, (Makkelie or Kuipers), Del Cerro (Oliver), Hategan i predict for QF.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Cakir and Rapallini are two sensible choices. It seems clear for me that Hernandez' appointment is something like a punishment. Irrati's missing out in Cakir's match is slightly surpisring, but could be justified, when Orsato is appointed tomorrow

    ReplyDelete
  15. Is there any policy on the part of UEFA concerning those referees from countries whose teams have reached the QF/SF stage?

In the old days - at WC at least - the respective officials were automatically disregarded for further matches.

    4. So many matches and not a single appointment for a Greek referee. That makes me sad.....

      Delete
    5. @ That should make you happy IMO, because the referees appointed are mostly from "small" football nations. It means that greek referees will have their chance in the following rounds and/or higher profile competition quals.

    6. The referees from one country are usually appointed to either first legs only or second legs only. Most likely Greek referees will be appointed to second legs and actually it's the case :)

  18. Just wanted to ask, why did UEFA go for Rappilini and not Pitana? He is still a fifa referee

    1. For the same reason CONMEBOL went for Gil Manzano, and not Kuipers, who is still active aswell.
You don’t exchange your best officials when this means they’ll miss out on their ‘own’ championships.

    2. I could add another question for you, why the exchange should be made only for the best (only on paper, sometimes) referees?
And... it is Rapallini, not Rappilini.

    3. Sending a Spanish referee trio was also the most logical choice based on the language spoken.

  19. Ekbert's presence means that Mateu could also still be there? No news from Spain?

    1. Maybe Rosetti made this 4off appointment on purpose to pretend nobody has been sent home.

  20. Another possibility could be Spanish or Italian referees ...

  23. Something else which nobody noticed: A German refereeing team will referee England vs Ukraine DAYS after England knocked their country out. Is that not something to worry about?

Not a suggestion of bias, more about the fact that Brych is not protected. Should anything go badly wrong for him on Saturday people will use this as an excuse!
