  1. WOW - Rapallini!(!)

Brilliant appointment for this potentially epic game. UEFA - respect.

  2. Rapallini is an amazing appointment! This match has potential to become one of the nicest so far and the Argentinian convinced in his first match. I think, his South American attitude can be really fitting for this type of duel, sensible appointment.
Soares Dias' match is an okayish appointment as well.

  3. So committee agrees about Rapallini very good display in first game and that's the reward. Very good choice, if you ask me. Also, the confirmation, that having an OFR in a game is not so much important if you officiate a good game. I was impressed by his skills and he absolutely deserves this game.
The same can be said for Soares Dias after a very good TUR - WAL, now a big game with CZE and ENG.
Now, looking at last 4 games for group stage, it should be quite easy to make predictions, and the referee who will stay with only 1 presence with Kovacs should be Ekberg. No room for him.
    SVK - ESP Oliver
    SWE - POL Grinfeeld
They can be switched in case.

    GER - HUN Karasev
    FRA- POR Kuipers

Final note: Kovacs and Ekberg got both North Macedonia as only game in the competition, but who was the third one? Rapallini. So this explains us that the first appointment for the Argentinian, differently from other referees, was a very important test to understand what to do after with him. Committee wanted to know him.
There is indeed a big difference in terms of impoortance of the game between UKR - MKD and now CRO - SCO.

    1. Do we really have to see Grinfeeld again after that choppy display in Amsterdam... in that case id rather have Frappart as stand in with Turpins assistents ;) (or a 3th appointment.) However very happy to see rapallini. He should get a KO match for sure if he keeps his level as he has shown in UKR MKD

    2. I agree that it is logical to pick these 4 referees to complete the group stage. However, I would not be surprised if Karasev is in group E instead of Grinfeeld. Makkelie or Mateu Lahoz with a third game in group F?

    3. Marrkoo thanks for this info, I didn't remember.
Since Oliver can't appear again in group F, then the name could be Grinfeeld indeed, for GER - HUN, with Karasev in SWE - POL maybe.

    4. I don't think there will be a referee with third game in GS, there are options to avoid that, and everything seems planned for a maximum of 2 for each referee.

    5. Grinfeeld would drown in any group F match after what we have seen in Amsterdam... Id bet on the two Dutchies for group F (altough most likely the 3rd place of that group will play NL) or indeed Mateu for Ger-Hun. Kuipers for sure for Por-Fra for me. Also a test for him to ref in a full stadium again

    6. I am also not convinced that the first performance of Grinfeeld was good enough to give him a quite important game on MD3 (and all 4 remianing are still very relevant). And Makkelie and Mateu seem good alternatives there with enough rest after their last match (and could reasonably get a QF as next match).
Personally I would like to see Ekberg again (in GER-HUN), but that seems unlikely.

    7. But there is one big difference. Kovacs is set to only 1 match before he can show what he can do. What of he will have a good performance? Not nice by uefa in his case after a good impresion in his last european game.

    8. They could theoretically still "swap" the roumanians if Hategan screws up Ita-wales and Kovacs does very (rapallini level)good :)

  4. Agree the 4 logical choices would be Oliver, Grinfeeld, Karasev & Kuipers. No reason not to appoint Oliver for a second game so, the only 1 may be Grinfeeld and we someone with a 3rd appointment which could well be Makkelie if UEFA felt Grinfeeld wasn't up to the required level.

  5. Regarding Soares Dias, Mikael's excellent analysis of TUR-WAL showed that he was not in full control in the very last minutes of the match. However, as the 90 minutes before were indeed very good, a second call was to be expected. And if everything goes smoothly in CZE -ENG, actually nothing should stand in the way of advancing to the knockout stage.

    1. This also shows that UEFA was satisfied with his handling of the mass confrontation, as opposed to some other opinions who wanted long consultation and red card.

    2. Of course this is not a sign that UEFA was satisfied with that (nor can we say they’re not). It’s nonsense to relate every referee appointment to UEFA’s apparent assessment of incident(s) in that referee’s game before.
Could be that in the big picture they’re happy with a performance, but still would have preferred another dealing with a particular situation. As long as that situation is not match-deciding a second appointment can perfectly happen.

  6. Just an interesting side note, not that I would think that it should or should have had any impact on this appointment: England and Czechia already met in Euro 2020 qualifiers and the referee in Wembley was... Artur Soares Dias :-)

He whistled a penalty for England when it still was 0-0 (England won 5-0 at the end) that Czech media were critical to, although I think it was a correct call back then (quite a typical "supportable soft penalty call" if you asked me :-) ). Anyway, the teams are basically the same now as then so one could say that no one could be prepared better than Soares Dias for this match. :-)

    1. Refereeing highlights of that game :)

(penalty is a clear impeding foul IMO, but I think quite a few refs would say play on)

  7. So with only 1 appointment referees are: Kovacs, Grinfeeld, Ekberg, Kuipers, Karasev, Oliver. And only 4 games left.

I don't think Kovacs, Grinfeeld and Ekberg will have second appointment. IMO one referee team will get the lottery ticket :) Makkelie or Lahoz?

  8. If Orsato, 46 in november 2021, retires, Italy will no longer have: referees in elite class and will not have a referee at WC 2022. Hopefully this will not happen.

    1. Orsato is pre-selected for WC 2022, so he will continue for another year.

  9. And also i am very curious about what committee will decide about Rapallini. Will they say thank you for good performance and say goodbye to him? or will they keep him for KO?

    1. It depends on the exchange agreement between UEFA and CONMEBOL. Usually, the details of such agreements are established before the competition.

    2. I think so too, and it would be fair in that case that also Gil Manzano continues at Copa, if he deserves it.

  10. This is non related to the post detailed.
Do we think FO appointments are made with the possibility that that referee may have to take over (if referee gets injured) or are they just giving appointments to give FO’s experience by being part of ‘the bigger picture’?
Has there been many occasions of referees needing replaced in games during major tournaments? Think I remember Paul Durkin (FO) taking over from Dermot Gallacher in a game at Euro 96 but can’t think of any others.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think they use for experience mostly. But sometimes there are no available referees then they can use big names (Kuipers, Cakir) sometimes.

      Delete
    2. Kuipers and Cakis specifically FOs in London was just a coincidence or they are getting accustomed for the last 4 matches that will be played in London? :)

      Delete
    3. If Kuipers gets Por Fra in Budapest it is no coincidence in my view:) but we will know that tomorrow.

  11. Predictions:

    SVK-ESP OLIVER
    SWE-POL KARASEV

    POR-FRA KUIPERS
    GER-HUN GRINFELD

Let me point out I don't really understand the tretament Kovacs got by Rosetti. He should have at least two games considering what he has showed so far and Rosetti simply put him aside prior to the tournament, giving him the least important game. Super unfair.
