    1. I particularly loved how he looses the YC in the end, continues unfazed and pulls out another. :D

Blue would have been a better option.

Better choice to wear the blue one.

    2. I've always been quite curious about this. Does it really matter what color the keepers wear in reference to the shirt the referee crew wear? I fully understand not wearing a color that clashes with field players. But the keepers, what effect does that have?

      Delete
    3. As Mr. Laws of The Game, you should know that the match officials must wear colors that distinguish themsleves from both teams, and their goalkeepers. 😜

  5. Plenty of free-kicks in the beginning of the game...one correct yellow card for reckless challange...It can be a tough game for Aguilar. But so far good job.

    2. Yeah we cannot see so much football..but Aguilar has to be very alert and he needs to be very focused. I also like his active body language, very clear.

  6. I like Aguilar's strong body language.

  7. Aguilar runs forwards sometimes when he should run backwards. In theese situations he has his back to the play

  8. 25' dangerous challenge from the Korean player into the Swedish player's knee. Shocking that AR2 didn't recommend a yellow card.

  9. Happy that Aguilar talks to players and not givibg to much YC. Thaught he was a referee who gave a lot of cards

  10. 31' I think YC for SPA should be mandatory in this situation

  18. One of main goals for refs must be to protect game and players. SWI players commited 10 fouls on Neymar yesterday. Behrami commited 4-5. Obviously that was their tactics. (Neymar was on a 3 months absence cause of injury) Referee must protect game and players. But only good ones can see and manage that.

    1. Referee's are not worried about protecting those who provide the spectacle. If they truly were, they would clamp down and do away with those who chose to be malicious and soil the match. But referee's are overly worried in doing everything possible to keep their cards tucked away and in keeping all 22 players on the field.

  19. For me two missed YCs so far (25', 31'). Looked at 38' like a foul, would have been a YC too.

  20. Very risky chellenge on penalty area, minute 43', Sweden wanted a penalty, but ball was clearly hit. Correct or at least supportable by Aguilar.

    2. Defender managed to play the ball first, good no PK call.

    3. Ball first, trailing leg after. I don’t think snybody would call it because the media would go insane.

  21. 24 fouls. Suprised to see that in only one half

    ReplyDelete
  22. Not very convinced so far. Foul detection had a couple flaws, for my taste too lenient with cards, even ones I'd say are close to mandatory. Let's hope that improves after the break. (The match too.) Good no PK shortly before the break, ball hit and good positioning.

      Delete
    6. In every World Cup, there is always a referee who enters the competition as an unknown commodity. But who ends up being a surprising revelation and goes further and deeper than ever expected. Cunha just might be that referee this year.

  25. Minute 51', a player stepped on the opponent with studs... but in my opinion not deliberate. So, OK to support the decision by Aguilar.

  26. 55' nice "play" from Aguilar. Ball bounced of his back. Moving away from the ball and not under would be a better option.

  27. 61' correct YC by Aguilar. This game is really shocking in terms of spectacle to be watched.

    3. Yes! Very good job to complete the review before South Korea had an attacking opportunity.

      Delete
    4. Vigliano = VAR I'd want backing e up
Any Italian or Geiger = I'd rather go at it alone.

I'd a millions times prefer to be made to look bad for missing something. Than have my VAR too worried about exposing my failure. In the end, it's about getting it right, isn't it?

      Delete
    5. @Sheriff You are usually very quick in discussing potential controversial situations related to some referees like you're still stuck with Irrati and Geiger situations from 2 days ago... On the other hand we had quite an average refereeing display yesterday in Brazil v Switzerland with many potential incorrect and inconsistent calls by the man in the middle, but surprisingly not a single word of wisdom for you! Why so? Italian VARs and Geiger can be criticised 2/3 days later but a Mexican referee doesn't even draw out a single line in spite of one of the underwhelming performances overall in the tournament... Really interesting!

      Delete
    6. It would be ilogical of me to comment on a match that I didn't watch live my dear Soham. As I mentioned to you before. My Sunday consisted of me being on the pitch working a few matches.

However based on the highlight's I've seen and the comments I've read on this blag. Unlike Mexico who excelled, Ramos failed. But for me to truly give a full and detailed analysis of Ramos' performance I'd have to watch the match in full and live. Because watching it now would mean that I'd be watching with the comments and criticism already prominent in my mind.

The Vigliano and Italian/Geiger comment is certainly relevant to to this thread. As Vigliano has yet again asserted himself and ensured that ultimately the correct decision was made. Something as we all know, the Italians have failed to do.

      Delete
    7. Point taken! Although there is still one possibility that the Italian VARs did mention about the situations, but the main referee ignored it as he was sure... In that case VARs can't be blamed!

      Delete
    8. Similar to Marciniak's case in ARG vs ISL.

  31. Uruguay vs Arabia Saudí será dirigido por Clement Turpin de Francia.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Good call for the PK but he needs to book at least 1 Swedish player for dissent, u can’t run next to the ref and yelled like this !!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. After getting the perfect perspective: Clear penalty. SWE player touches the ball shortly before he is tackled. But: Aguilar's view was blocked and it was difficult to see if the touch was by the Swedish player or the Korean player. Excellent video review, I wouldn't blame him to much for not whistling immediately.

    ReplyDelete
  34. To be honest, I expected this penalty to be called live by Aguilar, the same expectation I had in Gassama game when he missed the incident. Maybe I'm harsh, but let me write, in this way it is too easy for all referees to whistle a WC game. What do you think?
I mean, some incidents should be immediately assessed. If you have such technological help behind, this doesn't mean you should relax...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Just like the AR’s got directives to hold the flag the head refs probably got directives to be very careful to call penalties unless there is no doubt in their mind at all.

      Delete
    2. Great observation. Ice-hockey has had VAR for quite a number of years and some referees constantly keep their whistle down, as soon as something is questioned they trust VAR completely. We don't want that in football.

      Delete
    3. You are 100% right. After situations like this, how can we trust referee when he whistle or not foul all around field? Aguilar is most experience ref here, he must see that and give PK immediately.

      Delete
    4. Referees have instructions as Victor said above.

      Delete
    5. But I also agree that this must be penalty live.
Reason for not awarding PK is bad angle Aguilar had, for him it looked like defender played the ball.

      AR could've help him.

      Delete
    6. We have different situations. For Gassama it was nearly impossible to see it. The PK situation for Sweden was difficult to recognize for Aguilar cause - again - he had no good position, but the AR had to tell him but failed.
Aguilar all in all with positive body-language, communication, foul detection and disciplinary control.
      Sometimes bad positioning.
The missed penalty a crucial mistake. But he should get his 2nd game.

      Delete
    7. Missed penalty? He called the PK. If he used VAR as a tool to make a good call that should not be minus and "crucial mistake". VAR is tool for referees not only for assessors.

      Delete
    8. Andrasch I disagree. The Gassama situation is very easy and he had a perfect position like here:

  35. We must praise again that the VAR intervention and OFR were absolutely quick there. Well done under this aspect, no problems at all for referees using VAR, they have trained in an excellent way.

    1. Maybe he should have waited a little bit longer with interrupting the game, because Korea was in an attacking situation and there could have been complaints from them if the game would have been restarted with dropped-ball in case of no-PK decision.

      Delete
    2. What if South Korea had managed to score a goal prior prior to Aguilar halting the match for an On Filed Review? What do you do then?

      Delete
    3. Goal would be not allowed, I think!

      Delete
    4. Seems like the logical and correct choice Soham. But can you imagine the level of dissent the referee would face from the team whose goal has just been cancelled out.

      Delete
    5. A similar kind of situation did happen in the 2016 Dutch Cup Final which had Danny Makkelie as referee as far as I can remember!

      Delete
    6. You're right Sheriff, that would cause more trouble.

      Delete
    7. @Soham: In this situationed the goal wouldn't have counted either way because it was offside ;)
But a almost an identical situation.

      Delete
    8. That's how VAR should ALWAYS work! Great decision :)

      Delete
    9. My feeling is that Vigilano was 100% convinced it was a penalty, and hence it was imperative that Aguilar whistled before SKR scored.
It surely isn't usual protocol to whistle at such a moment.

Overall I saw an okay Aguilar. I suppose always the same points for improvement in his direction since years, that are already mentioned.

  38. Korea wanted a penalty in the last minute of the game, but it wasn't a deliberate handball.

  40. Weak performance. The first time I am unhappy in this WC, refereeing has been excellent so far. but not today.
    - missed YC for Granqvist
    - missed to detect penalty
    - too many free-kicks which leads to bad flow
    - bad use of communicating with players, failed to create an atmosphere where players want to do the right thing, instead they go on breaking the rules over and over again
    - not enough change of body energy; he stays the same all the time. where is the smile? where is the authority?

    ReplyDelete
  41. To be fair to the referee, looks like he thought the Korean player got the ball. Both players went for the ball at the same time, and the way it went off to the right would more likely come from the Korean player's touch.

In one of the initial replays they showed, I couldn't tell who touched the ball first - until they showed an angle from behind the goal after the penalty was awarded.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. "Behind the goal" angle. An angle that Aguilar did not have. Luckily Vigliano and VAR did and it lead to the correct decision ultimately being made.

      Delete
  42. About Ramos and Aguilar you judge much too hard in my view. Both good average.
Gassama indeed did very well. But Diedhiou with a little distance for me bad average - as Rocchi.
But we can be happy - no catastrophe so far and much better performances than in Brasil.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Diedhiou was better than both Aguilar and Ramos. Concacaf referees are by far least convincing so far. (With exclusion of Rochhi for who i think had the worst performance of the tournament so far. And ia m not talking about goal situation for which i think was not mistake

      Delete
    2. @Filip, I agree with you. CONCACAF has had the poorest showing, but acceptable overall. Ramos showed lower quality yesterday than Aguilar did today IMO though...

  43. Swedish coach Mr Andersson: ”All in all the referee makes a good game. But if we must await VAR all the time.... this penalty should have been taken instantly. If he missad it, it was good he could use VAR, but I think he should have solved it on his own. A very clear penalty”.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Swedish midfielder Albin Ekdal explains why he chased the referee and shouted: ”without VAR I would never do that, because you know that refs don’t change their minds. But now I know they will have a look and I was fully convinced it was a penalty”.

  46. Hi guys. Penalty incident from 43.min. Do you really sure about not to whistle these types of tackles?
I know player played the hall. But he hit the opponent's let (left ankle). This could cause serious ankle injury. According UEFA RAP clips i personally think this should be evaluated as a foul. Just my own view.

    3. IMO this was a very clear penalty. Yes the defender touched the ball, but he crushed the offensive player's legs and went right through them to do so. A clear case of a trailing leg tackle. Anytime and ankle ends up beneath the seat of the player going to ground for a tackle it should be called IMO...maybe some exceptions, but this was not one!
